Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. <p><strong>NORTH CAROLINA </strong>- These abandoned houses were no match for the powerful swells generated by Humberto and Imelda, which brought high surf, flooding, and heavy rain to the Outer Banks. It is believed that up to 6 homes have succumbed to the Atlantic Ocean.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1973423019470233900" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1973423019470233900"></div><p>Up until last Tuesday, 12 homes had been swept away into the Atlantic in the Outer Banks since 2020. Why are so many homes being swept away, you may ask? In many cases, what protected a house decades ago is no longer sufficient because the shore has receded, sea levels are higher, and strong storms have been more frequent or powerful.</p><h2>Coastal Impacts</h2><p>With Humberto now a dissipated storm, and Imelda moving away from the East Coast, dangerous swells will still be likely in their wake. More Homes Succumb to the Atlantic Ocean

Meteorologist Jesse Kelley is excited to join the talented staff at Weather Nation. Jesse spent most of his childhood in Birmingham, Alabama. The state of Alabama is prone to seeing various types of weather from severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and winter weather. For college, Jesse attended the University of South Alabama where he received his degree in Broadcast Meteorology along with minors in Math and Geography. <p>Thanks to Humberto, Imelda has moved away from Florida and will bring impacts to Bermuda. In the coming days, we are monitoring an area of low pressure to develop under the big high pressure ridge across the Northeast and Upper Midwest. As a result, deep tropical moisture returns to Florida and the Atlantic and produce showers and thunderstorms. The onshore pattern of the winds will bring daily chances of thunderstorms.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/New Baron Video 3-1759368439789.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p><br>This, coupled with a potential developing low out in the Bahamas, is likely to bring heavy downpours to the east coast of Florida. An excess of tropical moisture left behind by Imelda and Humberto, will do the state of Florida no favors.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/2025-10-02 05-38-25-1759405125315.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p></p><p>This influx of tropical moisture will farm enough energy for these thunderstorms to tap into. As a result, over the next five days, the forecast calls for about 3-5 inches of rain with isolated heavier totals along the Atlantic Coast sea board. Some flooding will be possible with the ground pretty saturated as of late. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web1-1759404851198.png"></p><p>As for that low out in the Bahamas, the National Hurricane Center has given this system low chances for some tropical development over the next 2-7 days. Regardless of any further development, we're still likely to see coastal impacts and heavy rain throughout this weekend.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web3-1759405370000.png"></p>

<p>Monsoon season has come and gone; September 30th marked the end of the 2025 season. The American Monsoon season runs from June 15 until September 30, so let's see how the season shaped up.</p><p>The Drought Monitor mid-June had most of the southwestern U.S. under drought conditions, with New Mexico under the worst of the conditions, under exceptional, level 5 drought.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-30 203810-1759286479364.png">By September 23, the final drought monitor of the season, most of the southwest worsened drought conditions, but the Mojave Desert saw improving conditions, as well as New Mexico, where we needed it.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-30 203815-1759286732227.png"></p><p>With the rainfall last weekend, Phoenix surpassed the average for the monsoon season, but most of this rain happened in a day. Otherwise, it was more of a non-soon season.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-30 203836-1759286678352.png">Some spots, like Las Vegas, saw a below-average monsoon season. In fact, this year we tied for the 18th driest monsoon season.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-30 204800-1759286908942.png">How about looking at the season from a lightning perspective? Karissa grew up loving math and science, but really fell in love with Meteorology while attending the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. After two summers of storm chasing in the central plains, she knew that it was the career path for her. After two years at COD, she transferred to Metropolitan State University of Denver. Karissa graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology. Helene's eyewall passed about 10 miles west-southwest of Perry, Florida at 11:10 p.m. ET on Florida's Gulf Coast. In the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, Helene was one of five landfalling storms along the Gulf coast, including three in Florida.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-24 135342-1758743646080.png"></p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5uqc6I6wcXM" start="0"></iframe></div><p>The remnants of Helene brought catastrophic flooding, which prompted a record 34 Flash Flood Emergencies across portions of Appalachia and Mid-South. Including the first ever for the city of Atlanta, GA after 11" of rain. The highest total from the storm topped out above 30" in North Carolina. A precursor event saturated the soils ahead of Helene. The USGS documented that the heavy rain on top of the impacted soils prompted more than 2000 landslides. 63 stream and river gauges exceeded their record flood levels during Helene. 2,700+ water rescues were documented, about half from storm surge and half from fresh water flooding.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot 2024-09-27 160234-1727474573331.jpg"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-24 140622-1758744396604.png">According to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://poweroutage.us">poweroutage.us</a>, a total of 7.4 million customers lost power at some point during Helene. Remembering Hurricane Helene: One Year Later

<p style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt; color: #454545;">Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. <p>There's a new state record in North Dakota after this weekend's severe weather tore through the nation's 39th state.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1967665592955179443" src="https://x.com/NWSBismarck/status/1967665592955179443"></div><p>The National Weather Service offices in Bismarck and Grand Fork say North Dakota has broken the record for most tornadoes in a year, surpassing the previous total of 61 set in 1999.</p><p>Severe storms swept through Central North Dakota on Sunday, and Bismarck confirmed 15 tornadoes from this outbreak.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1968057424612606356" src="https://x.com/NWSBismarck/status/1968057424612606356"></div><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/0915 ND Most Tornadoes on Record-1757978378157.png"></p><p>North Dakota typically sees about 29 tornadoes each year, but before September 14th, the state had already seen 58 for 2025.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/2dgiWTWdp-0" start="0"></iframe></div><p>Preliminary ratings from Sunday's event include an EF-1 just west of Mercer, ND, and EF-2 level damage in the Denhoff, ND area. Additional EF-2 damage was found approximately 13 miles west of Linton, ND. The office says more details will be released as the surveys are completed.</p><p>Jeff Schild, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Bismarck said Sunday's event was a bit of an unusual set up, and resembled more of an event you would see in the southeastern U.S. instead of the plains. The high shear environment contributed to several tornadoes touching down, but also mentioned the lack of hail the storms produced.</p>

North Dakota Breaks Yearly Tornado Record

<p>September marks the start of National Preparedness Month.</p><p>In a new study done by Talker, 90% of Americans acknowledge they are at risk of a natural disaster, but only 46% of people said they were prepared for a disaster of any kind.</p><p>The study goes on to conclude that younger generations (Gen Z, Millennials) are more prepared for a disaster than older generations. We posed the question to our social media audience to see how prepared they are.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1965460391326351670" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1965460391326351670"></div><p>This month, we're teaming up with the American Red Cross to learn more how to better prepare ourselves in the event of a disaster.</p><h1><strong><u>WILDFIRES:</u></strong></h1><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Cc4PIrSn8Q4" start="0"></iframe></div><p></p><p>The Red Cross encourages those in wildfire prone areas to have a go-kit with at least three days of supplies that you can easily carry, a stay-at-home kit that contains two weeks of supplies, as well your important documents in a safe location.</p><p>The organization also provides <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.redcross.org/content/dam/redcross/get-help/pdfs/wildfire/EN_Wildfire-Safety-Checklist.pdf"><strong><u>a checklist</u></strong></a> of things to do before, during, and after a wildfire.</p><p>Taylar Sausen, a national spokesperson for the Red Cross said it's also important to know how you can stay connect when wildfires strike. Sign up for emergency alerts, find how your local and regional governments issue information, and have backup batteries or other ways to charge your devices so you can stay connected.</p><p>Another way to stay ahead of the fires, is by creating defensible spaces around your home.</p><p>Learn more on what defensible spaces are, and how you can get your home ready for wildfires:</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NMjM2M3FUa0" start="0"></iframe></div><p></p><h1><u>HURRICANES:</u></h1><p>September 10th marks the statistical peak of hurricane season each year. Despite being past the peak, there is still plenty of hurricane season left and all it takes is a single storm to make a drastic impact to your community. That's why the Red Cross is encouraging those in hurricane prone areas to make a disaster plan now, ahead of the storm, and start finding supplies you may need now to avoid the rush and long lines when a storm approaches.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/K7sqHPreCwY" start="0"></iframe></div><p></p><p>"The best time to prepare for a disaster is well before it happens," said Mandy McMahon, a spokesperson for the National Red Cross.</p><p>McMahon emphasized the importance of making plans for staying home and evacuating when it comes to tropical systems for both coastal communities, but also inland areas that typically see impacts from tropical systems.</p><p>"Food, water, and medicine are the most important items, but also think about how you'll charge your devices." McMahon added as she encourages those with medical conditions to remember how live saving medical devices may need to be charged or may need replacement batteries.</p><p>McMahon also adds that you should be finding apps now that can help notify you of emergencies, but also of evacuation orders, places to find shelters, and other helpful resources during disasters. Create a go-kit with things you need in your daily life: food, water, first aid, etc. But consider other items you may need too. Extra clothing, blankets, shovels, and heating pads are all good options to include in your go-kits. We spoke with Remy Kennedy, a national spokesperson with the American Red Cross to learn more on how to prepare for winter weather.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/uqknztCRXmU" start="0"></iframe></div><p>Dr. Jim Siebert shared some of his past experience dealing with winter weather in locations that don't typically see snow. National Preparedness Month in Full Swing

<p>From Wilson's Warbler to Canadian Geese, millions of birds (we are excluding "Snowbirds" from this count) are kicking off their seasonal migration to warmer climates further south. To learn more about this tremendous trek, we spoke with ornithologist and aero-ecologist, Kyle Horton, Ph.D. from Purdue University.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/altubffHZ-U" start="0"></iframe></div><p>"We're well into fall migration across most of North America right now, and night after night there's going to be hundreds of millions of birds flying. Across the season, we'll be looking at billions of birds making their southward journey to their non-breeding or wintering grounds," said Horton who helps runs the migratory bird forecasting website: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://birdcast.info/"><strong>https://birdcast.info/</strong></a>.</p><p>The team utilizes weather radars, the same that we use to detect thunderstorms to also track their feathery friends. That means sometimes radars are actually showing birds rather than actual showers. You'll sometimes hear meteorologist refer to this as "clutter" on the radar imagery.</p><p>"The rain we're accustomed to seeing on radar is really intense, it's quite dense and it shows up on a it shows up as a more stronger signal," Horton added. Precipitation typically shows up as reds and oranges on most radar scales, where birds return typically show up as blues and greens. Horton said you can look at the texture of the radar image to identify whether the radar is showing rain or animals like birds or insects. Storms typically have a more elongated shapes and are irregular. Birds return a smoother more consistent shape.</p><p>Horton said typically birds try and time their travels with the arrival of frontal systems to make their journey a little easier. <p>After marking the start of meteorological fall, nothing is more seasonal than looking up and seeing the bright red blood moon; and this year on September 7th, some people across the globe were able to actually see it. Here's some dazzling video from many different countries who were actually able to see it.<br></p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1965211049264848932" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1965211049264848932"></div><p>The blood moon is a phenomenon that occurs twice every three years globally. It'll happen when Earth passes directly between the moon and the Sun, also known as a total lunar eclipse. This process is also known as Umbra. This, in turn, blocks out all the direct sunlight from the moon. During a blood moon event, sunlight that passes through Earth's atmosphere gets scattered. Light with shorter wavelengths, such as blue and green, scatters, so their light is not reflected off the Moon, while colors with longer wavelengths, such as red and orange, are able to reach the Moon.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/eclipse 1-1757431064586.png"></p><p>While this phenomenon is impressive to see in person, atmospheric conditions actually play a role on the shade of the blood moon. For example, things like wildfire smoke, dust or even pollution can deepen the red shade of the blood moon, making it more striking in appearance.</p><p>Unfortunately, blood moon events aren't always visible worldwide. Being that the window of time the Earth passes in between the Sun and the moon is only 83 minutes, only certain spots can actually see the blood moon. In the window, the other half of the world is still in daytime! This most recent event, the blood moon was only visible in countries like Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. Looks like the Americas had to sit this one out!</p><p>Not all hope is lost, because the next predicted full lunar eclipse will actually be visible from North America! This will be visible in both North and South America, Australia and East Asia!</p>

<p>As an upper-level high weakens and pivots south, moisture at the surface and stronger upper-level energy will combine to bring the threat of heavy thunderstorms back to New Mexico and West Texas.</p><h1>Timing</h1><p>Daily rounds of thunderstorm complexes are expected to persist through the weekend. The consistent storms will also bring a risk for flash flooding.</p><p></p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/rscrain-1756607620447.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p></p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/ero-1756607709593.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>The best time for storms will be during diurnal heating in the afternoons, but because a significant amount of moisture is in place, some morning and overnight storms will also be possible. <p>Hard to imagine the skies going dark at 6 o'clock in August isn't it? That's what happened on Monday as nearby thunderstorms kicked up a wall of dust in portions of Arizona. Imagine that wall moving at 60+ mph - that will sneak up on you quickly. The flash, which stretched from Eastern Texas to Kansas City, MO occurred in October 2017 during a mesoscale convective system. The flash covered 515 miles across a notorious stormy hot spot within the United States. A distance that would normally take eight or nine hours to drive, was covered in mere seconds. </p><p>The new record surpasses the previous from a 2020 thunderstorm across the Southern United States. So how did a lightning strike from 2017 somehow come out the blue to beat the 2020 record? </p><p>The WMO said this particular flash wasn't identified initially during the 2017 analysis, but was later discovered after re-examination of data.</p><p><span style="color: rgb(15, 23, 42)">“This new record clearly demonstrates the incredible power of the natural environment. Additionally, WMO assessment of environmental extremes such as this lightning distance record testify to the significant scientific progress in observing, documenting and evaluating such events. The 2017 Megaflash: The World's Longest Lightning

<p>According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Juneau, Alaska, the Mendenhall River crested at a record level of 16.65 feet (major flood stage).  This level exceeds the 2024 record of 15.99 feet. Mendenhall Glacier outburst sends record water surge into Alaska's capital city

<p><strong>Tropical Storm Octave </strong>formed earlier on Tuesday in the Eastern Pacific. This remains a tropical storm and is forecast to meander off to the west.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/web1-1759424726669.png"></p><p>The good news with Octave is that the NHC has good confidence it will likely stay out to sea. Tropical Storm Octave Spinning in the Pacific

<p>Imelda is now a Post-Tropical Cyclone as it quickly moves east-northeast, away from Bermuda. That means it is no longer getting it's energy from tropical processes. According to the National Hurricane Center: "Visible satellite images and global model fields indicate that a front extends into the center of the cyclone from the east-northeast, while another frontal feature has developed to the south of the cyclone." Fronts are consistent with extra-tropical cyclones. It still remains strong with winds at category one strength, however.</p><p><strong>KEY MESSAGES:</strong></p><ul><li><p>Imelda is weakening as it moves through the Atlantic</p></li><li><p>Imelda pushed past Bermuda overnight. Tropical alerts have been cancelled.</p></li><li><p>Swells and high surf from Imelda are expected to impact the U.S. East Coast over the next several days</p></li></ul><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-02 091030-1759417846055.png"></p><h1>Coastal Flood Potential</h1><p>Life-threatening rip currents remain possible, as well as coastal flooding with inundation of 2 to 3 feet above ground level. This flooding can move inland, impacting homes and businesses. Dangerous swim conditions will also be a concern. Please listen to local authorities and avoid swimming if possible, as rip currents can be deadly.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/web7-1759424627017.png"></p><h1>Waves &amp; Rip Currents</h1><p>The coastline from Florida to North Carolina is highlighted for high surf. Post-Tropical Imelda has Passed Bermuda

<p><strong>WEST -</strong> As a trough of low pressure lingers off the west coast, a few fronts have pushed into the western U.S and across the Intermountain West. Our forecast models indicate scattered rain moving into states such as Idaho, Nevada, and Utah through the end of the week, with higher elevations expected to receive some snowfall.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/2025-10-02 13-00-54-1759424489138.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Due to their high moisture content, these showers will be more efficient at producing rainfall, resulting in higher totals. Some areas could pick up a few inches of rainfall, which could bring on a low-end flooding threat. <p>Grab the pumpkin spice and apple cider donuts, fall foliage has been developing quickly across the United States, with more color this week dropping into the middle latitudes!<br><br>The latest forecast from <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.explorefall.com/fall-foliage-map">Explore Fall</a> (top of page) shows peak color emerging across the higher elevations of the Colorado Rockies, and the Beartooth and Wind River Ranges in Wyoming over the next seven days (September 30 - October 6).<br><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-29 203511-1759199719401.png"></p><p>Color has quickly developed and already peaked for regions in the dark orange and red shades above (orange to red areas), much of it across the Rockies and Cascades. Fall Color Is Peaking in Parts of the Lower 48

<p>Tropical activity in the Atlantic has increased significantly over the last week. We're now tracking two named storms, Imelda and Humberto. On Saturday, Humberto reached Category 5 status, with sustained winds topping out at 160 mph! Since then, it has backed off to 80 mph winds, making it a category 1 storm.</p><h1>LOOKING BACK</h1><p style="text-align: start"><strong>Humberto </strong>was named a week ago, last Wednesday afternoon, and gained hurricane status early Friday morning. This is the first time in nearly 100 years that we have had 2 Category 5 hurricanes in back-to-back seasons!</p><p style="text-align: start"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-30 203358-1759286043566.png"></p><p style="text-align: start">We are now past the climatological peak of Atlantic Hurricane Season, but still have a ways to go for the season. For being such a quiet season, the normal amount of Accumulated Cyclone Energy, a metric to quantify activity, is not far off. Two category 5 hurricanes will boost those numbers, though.</p><p style="text-align: start"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-01 091802-1759331890905.png">September is historically the peak of hurricane season, and ocean conditions remain favorable for additional development. However, the NHC urges residents along the Atlantic basin to monitor updates closely.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/W2bhqfX0B0A" start="0"></iframe></div><p>As always, preparedness is key. Humberto Merges with a Front in the Atlantic

<p>A cold has been slowly progressing across the country, bringing rain and gusty winds along with it. The front will continue to approach the East Coast to tend the week, spurring heavy showers and a few severe storms.</p><p>Damaging winds are the primary concern here as we head into Thursday from Connecticut through Georgia (top of page). Isolated tornadoes are also possible, primarily in the Northeast.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/PIC 3-1758827812988.jpg">Storms will follow along and ahead of the frontal boundary through the end of the work week. Cold Front Drives Severe Storms Through Thursday

<p>Rain finally moves into areas that have been drought-stricken. There will be a chance of repeated storms and downpours across the mid-south through the northeast.&nbsp; A cold front will be pushing eastward across the eastern portions of the United States, where most of these storms will develop along the front.&nbsp;</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-24 084229-1758724971383.png"></p><p>Cities like Atlanta have not received that much rain. Atlanta has received only 0.02 inches of rainfall for the month of September. This set the record for the driest September since record-keeping.&nbsp;</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-24 084320-1758725011813.png"></p><p>Over the next several days, the Weather Prediction Center has issued excessive rainfall outlooks. A slight risk has been issued for&nbsp;Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, and the southern portions of Ohio. Heavy Rainfall Slated for Drought-Stricken Areas

<p>Space weather observations are about to get a substantial upgrade from a new solar observing satellite scheduled to launch on Wednesday, September 24th. In addition, the way we receive critical real time data and forecasts is about to become easier to access and interpret.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/0yg8nw0_IKQ" start="0"></iframe></div><h2>Satellite SWFO-L1</h2><p>This new satellite, Space Weather Follow On at Lagrange (SWFO-L1), will greatly enhance the ability of space weather experts to monitor activity from the sun in real time using several different instruments and is NOAA's first satellite dedicated to continuous, operational space weather observations.<br><br>Why is monitoring the sun important? Solar phenomena such as Coronal Mass Ejections can disrupt, damage, or even destroy critical infrastructure here on Earth and in orbit, such as satellites, power grids, and communication equipment.<br><br>This satellite will help replace aging satellites which have been operating well beyond their intended design life with depleting resources (fuel), such as SOHO (1995), ACE (1997), and DSCOVR (2015).</p><p>NOAA Satellites released the following video to breakdown the instruments and observational capabilities of SWFO-L1.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/YgGUchjH83E" start="0"></iframe></div><p></p><h2>A New Way To View Space Weather Forecasts</h2><p>In conjunction with the launch of SWFO, NOAA is beginning a process to revamp how it delivers space weather forecasts. New NOAA Satellite Expected To Greatly Enhanced Sun Monitoring, Forecasts

<p>Monsoon season can be enhanced by tropical systems from the Eastern Pacific, in fact, this usually occurs 1-2 times per season on average! For the second time this year, parts of the SW are seeing enhanced precipitation from the tropics, this time from what was Tropical Storm Mario.</p><p>Mario's moisture led to some intense rainfall from California to New Mexico, producing several significant flash flood events and debris flows, including in Oak Glen. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-19 052003-1758281154453.png">The heaviest of the rain is behind Southern California, but more scattered storms are possible with monsoon moisture across the Lower Four Corners Saturday.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/New Baron Video 3-1758337487119.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>The rain was a welcome sight for many in California. Downtown LA hadn't seen rain since the beginning of JUNE! Flood Threat Slowing Down for California

<p><strong>CENTRAL U.S - </strong>A trough that came in from the Pacific, moved over the Rockies, and is now in the Plains has been responsible for severe storms across the High Plains all week. It's now pushing into the Midwest and Southern Plains, ushering a slow-moving cold front through the area.</p><p>Related: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/north-dakota-breaks-yearly-tornado-record">Dakota Tornado Record Falls Over the Weekend</a></p><p>The front is moving southward, bringing the threat of more hailstones and damaging winds. A level ONE risk (MARGINAL) is in effect for Thursday from Missouri to the Panhandle of Texas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/1-1758250684401.png"></p><p>Scattered storms will continue along the front overnight into Friday, with a few more heavy downpours expected Friday afternoon especially across the Southern Plains. However behind the front, a few isolated storms could be severe in the Central Plains.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/New Baron Video 3-1758250851678.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/1-1758250943134.png">Rainfall rates could surpass 1-2" per hour in these slow moving thunderstorms, resulting in pockets of 2-4 inches of accumulation. This could lead to isolated flash flooding.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/1-1758251167037.png"></p><p>The WPC has issued excessive rainfall outlooks for this isolated flood chance for Thursday and Friday, between west Texas and northern Mississippi.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-18 053746-1758195612299.png"></p><p>Always use caution with flood waters, as you never know how deep the water is. Storms Slide Down the Plains

<p>The dry time has been a little hard to enjoy the last week or two in South Florida. While this is the rainy season, and we're making up for a slow start to it, you can still roll your eyes at what the extended forecasts have looked like recently. In fact, some spots in South Florida have already had their wettest start to September, including Miami.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-16 163631-1758062210080.png">On the other end of the spectrum, some northern Florida spots have really missed out, making it the driest start to September in areas such as Gainesville and Tallahassee.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-16 163641-1758062216443.png"></p><p>So why? Just because Florida likes to have the most fun? Well, actually, a frontal boundary keeps these storms coming for days. While we've had a couple of days of relief, more moisture is in the forecast for South Florida.</p><p>That, along with a TON of moisture to work with, is attempting to catch up some drought-stricken areas of the Sunshine State. The Drought Monitor updated on Thursday and had some pretty sizeable improvements in South Florida.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/2025-09-18 10-51-54-1758207184122.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p></p><p>So while it might be easy to complain about beach plans constantly getting ruined, it has its benefits. Our biggest concern is the lightning threat associated with any Florida thunderstorm, but especially this time of year, with people outdoors. Anytime it rains this heavily, of course, the flash flooding threat will be there as well. Some areas could receive another 3-5 inches, or even more, before the rain chances start to back off next week.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/web4-1758207272039.png"></p>

Florida Rainfall: Nuisance or Beneficial?

<p>Did you see them? Many might have had better things to do this weekend but if you were paying attention to Space Weather, you got a treat! NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center upped the expectation late last night, with some dazzling results.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1967422118729273403" src="https://x.com/NWSSWPC/status/1967422118729273403"></div><p>The problem for many in the plains was cloud-cover, with evening storms making it difficult to see the lights behind the lightning, but some were lucky to sneak between the clouds.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-15 092335-1757950156965.png">Granted, it might have been difficult to see with the naked eye. Many of the photos we've seen have mentioned a long exposure that was needed to see the fun. Northern Lights Close Out the Weekend For Many

<p>A strong upper-level trough along with monsoonal moisture advecting northward continues to hone in on Western Colorado, SE Utah, and New Mexico. Both a flood threat and isolated severe thunderstorms will be possible. There are risks for excessive rainfall and flooding over the next few days. The risks are very isolated in the threat of flooding, but it is still something to pay attention to.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/09-14 rsc wpcs-1757878358375.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>The Storm Prediction Center has the risk for strong storms stretching from North Dakota to Texas, but here we will discuss the threat for the southern Plains and Texas.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-14 133029-1757878277064.png"></p><p>The latest model data suggest that the heaviest rain will be focused over parts of West Texas and the Central Plains as the disturbance keeps moving east. <p><strong>CALIFORNIA -</strong> Wildfires in the western U.S. continue to burn, impacting air quality across much of the country. The Garnet Fire, which began in the Sierra National Forest on August 24, 2025, has prompted a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/r05/sierra/alerts/garnet-fire-closure-order">partial forest closure </a>near the fire.</p><p>According to the Fresno County Sheriff's Department, some evacuation orders are in effect in the area. The fire has now burned over 56,000+ acres and is approximately 15% contained as of Wednesday evening.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/web6-1757599366147.png"></p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/2025-09-11 09-48-00-1757598502790.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>As of Thursday morning, the air quality is in the moderate range from the Garnet Fire.
