<p>Persistent lake-effect snow and a series of fast-moving winter systems continue to impact the Great Lakes and the Northeast, creating a prolonged stretch of wintry weather. The pattern remains active as cold air repeatedly pours south from Canada, interacting with relatively warmer lake waters and reinforcing narrow but intense snow bands downwind of the lakes.<span style="color: rgb(36, 36, 36)"> </span>Winter Weather Advisories and Lake Effect Snow Warnings remain in place through Saturday.</p><p>Earlier this week, on Tuesday, Syracuse broke a record with 24.2" of snowfall, and could see additional snowfall through the weekend. Heavy snow bands plagued the Northeast through the New Year had heavy Lake Effect snow.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="2007081945495441814" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/2007081945495441814"></div><p></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/PIC 2-1767208072325.jpg"></p><p>New snowfall totals are coming in with over 30" of snowfall over the past few days. The most significant lake-effect snowfall continues east and southeast of&nbsp;Lake Erie&nbsp;and&nbsp;Lake Ontario, where cold northwest winds are producing long-fetch snow bands. These bands can remain nearly stationary for hours, and additional snow can accumulate over areas that have already received several feet.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/web1-1767526574525.png"></p><h1><strong>WHAT TO EXPECT / </strong>TIMING</h1><p>A clipper system will continue to push through the Northeast through the rest of Saturday, bringing rounds of snow across the Great Lakes and the Northeast. At the same time, multiple low-pressure systems are tracking through the Great Lakes, enhancing snowfall coverage and extending impacts beyond traditional lake-effect zones.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-03 043309-1767440006552.png"></p><p>As these systems pass, they help reinforce cold air at the surface while adding moisture and lift to the atmosphere, allowing lake-effect snow to transition into more widespread synoptic snowfall across parts of the Ohio Valley, interior Northeast, and New England.<span style="color: rgb(36, 36, 36)"> </span>Two fronts are expected to move through mid next week.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/2026-01-04 06-36-37-1767526628447.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>SNOW TOTALS</h1><p>As we look ahead into Tuesday, we are looking at some light to medium accumulation totals between 3-6" of snow. The heaviest totals will be over the UP of Michigan. Lake-Effect Snow Continues to Impact Millions Across the Great Lakes

<p style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt; color: #454545;">Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

<p>A pair of intense storm systems will continue to unload heavy precipitation in California, following several impactful systems that created major flooding and mudslides during the holidays. Impacts will include the potential for additional flash flooding (including with mudslides and debris flows), isolated severe storms, gusty winds, and heavy mountain snow.</p><p>A series of troughs will move in from the west coast, bringing Pacific moisture and onshore flow. As a cold front crashes into the coastline, storms will begin moving inland by later tonight. Subsequent surface lows moving in over the next few days will keep the pattern soggy through the weekend.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/2026-01-03 04-55-13-1767442120384.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Flooding Threat</h1><p>Rainfall totals could surpass 4-7 inches, or even higher, by the first part of next week in several mountain locations, including the San Gabriels north of Los Angeles. This will likely lead to flash flood development and possibly mudslides.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/web1-1767526043224.png"></p><p>Flash flood potential is expected to continue through Sunday, with the WPC's excessive rainfall outlook showing a slight risk. Flood potential lingers through Monday, with a marginal risk (level 1) issued from the WPC.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/2026-01-04 06-28-26-1767526127789.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Timing / Forecast</h1><p>Several rounds of heavy precipitation are expected to develop. Another round of heavy rain and snow begins to fall Sunday morning across Central/Northern California, before gradually shifting south into Sunday night. Another round of rain and snow moves in on Monday, with diminishing impacts into Tuesday.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/2026-01-04 06-30-00-1767526230811.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Snow &amp; Wind</h1><p><strong>Winter Storm Warnings</strong> are now in effect for the Sierra Nevada as well as the Trinity-Shasta mountains. Several feet of snow are expected to accumulate by the end of the weekend in many areas, including on I-80 over the Donner Pass. Snow levels are expected to drop Saturday evening to around 5,000 feet.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-03 045804-1767441516906.png">Areas in orange and white could see 2-4 feet of snow, which is great news for the Sierra. The snowpack remains well below average due to the slow start to the season.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/web1-1767526356180.png"></p><p>Wind-wise, we're on the back end of this system. <p>While there will be a temporary break in record-breaking warm temperatures briefly, a strengthening upper-level ridge will once more allow warming temperatures to approach record levels.</p><p></p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/dotsinsanity-1767496853737.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p></p><p>The record potential will generally move from west to east across the country, along with the upper-level ridge. Areas like Montana and Idaho joined the fun on Saturday.</p><p></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-03 201638-1767496921488.png"></p><p>The area that's been hogging many of the records recently has been down in Texas. A weak front has passed through, dropping temperatures 10-15 in some spots. That will keep highs from threatening records this afternoon, but won't keep them down forever. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-04 043608-1767526609504.png"></p><p>Temperatures in Texas were downright hot on Saturday. Down in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, temperatures soared into the 90s! As warmer and moist air surges north ahead of the boundary, more thunderstorms are possible tonight. Severe Storms Target the Southeast on Saturday

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. <h1>Northern U.S.</h1><p>In the North-Central U.S., an Alberta Clipper will help reinforce the cooler air as we move into the weekend. Morning lows and afternoon highs will be well below normal for many spots in the northern U.S.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-02 131959-1767385206537.png"></p><p>Be cautious of the wind chill; some of these spots may read above zero on a thermometer, but they will feel even colder than that. Some wind-chills could reach the single digits.</p><p>Temperatures will not rise significantly in the afternoon. Chilly Air Across the Northern States

<p>As we say goodbye to 2025 and ring in 2026, many parts of the country can expect active weather for this year’s ball drop. In New York City, home to the nation’s largest New Year’s Eve celebration, conditions will turn cool through the evening and overnight, with a low chance for a few light snowflakes around midnight. Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing, dropping into the 20s.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/PIC 2-1767206581020.jpg"></p><p>Here’s an early look at the forecast: a few light snow showers may be possible on New Year’s Eve across the region, but accumulations are not expected.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/12-30_rne bams-1767123576095.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Did you know the first-ever ball drop originated in New York City back in 1907? Luckily for the spectators who gathered in Times Square on December 31, 1907, the weather cooperated. The day reached a high of 44°F with a low of 35°F, milder than the current normal high of 41°F and low of 30°F for December 31. Still, as the ball dropped at midnight, spectators definitely needed their winter coats, as the 35°F temperature felt colder with 20-mph west winds.</p><p>Across the rest of the country, other unique “ball drops” will be taking place, and in many spots, the weather looks chilly.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-30 172400-1767140647149.png"><br>Out west, some locations will stay relatively mild. In Boise, Idaho, spectators can enjoy the famous potato drop with temperatures around 40 degrees at midnight.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-30 172354-1767140651187.png"></p><p>In the Southeast, a giant peach will NOT be dropping this year in Atlanta; the city is opting for a New Year's celebration called Countdown Over ATL. Temperatures will still be cool if you're participating. Weather for the Ball Drop: What to Expect as 2026 Begins

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!
