Arctic air is set to take a deep dive into the Southern United states. Millions of Americans will be impacted by these cooler temperatures this weekend through next week. This cold outbreak is being driven by a strong upper-level low dipping southward from Canada, allowing frigid polar air to surge into the central and eastern portions of the country. This low will also help to drive multiple cold fronts across the country. There will be widespread subfreezing temperatures overnight, with many regions experiencing daytime highs that will struggle to climb above the freezing mark.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-08 072835-1762612121598.jpg">In some areas, temperatures could run 20 to 30 degrees below average, especially across the Plains, Midwest, and Great Lakes region.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-09 113537-1762713344772.png">Monday and Tuesday's lows will plummet into the 20s, 30s, and 40s all the way to the Central Gulf Coast States and Florida. Numerous frost and freeze alerts will be issued ahead of the coldest air - protect sensitive plants.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-08 073012-1762612288445.jpg">Farther south, the cold air will bring the season’s first frost and freeze to areas that typically remain mild into late fall. The combination of Arctic high pressure and strong cold advection will make the air feel even colder, with wind chill values dipping into the single digits in northern states.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-08 073032-1762612306042.jpg">This early blast of winter is a reminder that the transition from autumn to winter can happen abruptly when large-scale atmospheric patterns align. People should prepare by checking heating systems, protecting exposed pipes, and dressing in multiple insulating layers to guard against hypothermia and frostbite. The lake effect snow season has arrived, with heavy snow expected tonight into Monday and Tuesday. Early Sunday the snow was just starting to stack up. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/web 8-1762700374579.png"> Watches and advisories have been issued on the southern sides of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, with alerts around Lakes Erie and Ontario likely to be issued soon as well. Snow in these areas could top 8-12" in some locations, with heavy snowfall rates likely reducing visibility at times, making travel very difficult.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Web 4-1762699117632.png"><h1>How Lake Effect Works</h1>Water has a much higher heat capacity than air, meaning it takes more time to warm up and cool down. This leads to "mild" water temperatures in the Great Lakes while the air overhead can be much cooler. As the cold, dry air moves over these areas, it's able to evaporate moisture from the lakes until it condenses into clouds and precipitation before falling out over land. Typically, we need at least a 13° F difference between the lake water and the air aloft (around 1500 m, or 4500-5000 ft) for lake effect snow to form. This weekend, the difference will be close to 35-45°!<h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-08 060323-1762608655882.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-08 060332-1762608670553.png">Forecast</h1>Lake effect snow begins to develop late Saturday as the cold air begins to filter farther south with stronger northerly flow. Sunday will see additional lake effect snow develop as the cold continues to spill in, eventually turning mixed rain and snow showers to all snow. As the winds shift slightly from the NNE late Sunday into Monday, Chicago could see some intense lake effect snow drift over downtown from the lakeshore. This is completely dependent on a shortwave around the upper-level low providing those NNE winds, so if that shifts a bit, Chicago may get missed. Other areas more certain to see some heavy accumulations include locations on the SSE sides of the lakes, and on the SE side of Lake Ontario. Winds shift back to the North and NW by Monday, bringing the heavier snow into Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/2025-11-09 09-55-00-1762700171264.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Impacts to travel can be expected, especially along the I-90 corridor where major impacts are possible in NW Indiana. If it hasn't been wet, it's been warm out West. This week looks no different as our good friend, an Upper Level Ridge, will continue to build in. That will keep the quiet weather around, but will start to push temperatures into historic levels over the coming days.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-09 080544-1762700824514.png">We've been struggling to find many that will complain openly about 70's and 80's around the Intermountain West, or even low 90's around Phoenix. It's in southern California that might have a different reaction to 90 showing up in the forecast. Because they know what that could mean: wildfire danger.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-09 080534-1762700911315.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-09 110423-1762711549596.png">Any time high pressure sets up somewhere in the Great Basin or Four Corners, there could be offshore flow, winds blowing from the desert to the Pacific Ocean. When that happens, those winds are much warmer and drier as they cross up and over the San Gabriels and San Bernardinos. The Storm Prediction Center is highlighting areas just north of LA with an ELEVATED risk for wildfire growth today, but it hasn't risen to the level of a Red Flag Warning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-09 081136-1762701150179.png">There is some good news in all of this: it's a short-lived snap of hot weather. By Tuesday and Wednesday, the breezy winds will back off and that should help temperatures settle closer to normal for this time of year. Ahead of the front, warm temperatures and plenty of moisture is still available for an isolated severe threat today. For Sunday, the cold front slices through the Atlantic coast of the Southeast to bring another severe weather threat, producing a few reports of winds and hail. A system has been bringing snow across the Plains and Midwest on Saturday. This same system will continue to push through the Great Lakes into Sunday morning. Some areas have already seen some snow accumulation in the last 24 hours.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/pic6-1762642526724.png">Moderate rainfall and lighter snow will continue to drift east with the low-pressure system into Saturday night and Sunday morning. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/FORECAST-1762633208979.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Winds &amp; Temperatures</h1>Afternoon highs will struggle to warm out of the 30s for most areas impacted by the precipitation. Midwest Clipper Brings Light Snow, Gusty Winds

Secondary severe weather season is underway across the U.S. - so called because it typically pales in comparison to the primary severe weather season in the spring. However, the fall can provide high-end severe weather threats of its own, including the December 2021 tornado outbreak. Thankfully, the severe weather setup for now through Sunday doesn't look to be on the high-end, but a few scattered severe storms will be possible.<hr><h1>Severe Storm Outlooks/Hazards</h1>Early morning severe storms will be possible along the cold front driving south. Large hail and damaging winds will be possible with any severe storms and the severe risk should diminish by sunrise.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/PIC 2-1762564233131.jpg">The threat for isolated severe storms will continue Saturday into Sunday as the cold front is dragged through the south. Severe Storms Possible from Ohio to the Gulf Coast Friday and Saturday

A series of atmospheric rivers has been responsible for wet, windy, and snowy weather in the northwestern U.S over the last few weeks. Our system is currently moving through Washington, Oregon, and the northern tier of California, bringing heavy rainfall and snow. Above is the forecast rainfall totals for the next several days. Gold Beach in Oregon has already picked up 2.51" of rainfall in the past 24 hours.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Web1-1762440546220.png">With multiple inches of rain on the way, the Weather Prediction Center is monitoring coastal areas at a level 1, MARGINAL, risk for excessive rainfall that may lead to flash flooding.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-05 095854-1762361963192.png"><h2>Timing</h2>Precipitation across the Northwest should continue for the next few hours. Conditions will slowly improve Friday into the weekend before we gear up for the next round of Pacific moisture next week. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/New Baron Video 3-1762471781966.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Snow</h1>As some of that moisture makes its way into the higher elevation mountains, it will likely mean heavy snow for the mountains. Next Big Push of Moisture in the Northwest

The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://science.nasa.gov/solar-system/meteors-meteorites/perseids/">best meteor shower of the year</a> is expected to peak this weekend! The Perseid meteor shower often producers high numbers of meteors and coincides with warm to mild temperatures, making it one of the most satisfying to take in.2024 shouldn't be an exception as the waxing crescent moon will set early enough to allow for excellent conditions.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/08/Screenshot 2024-08-10 113148-1723311247808.png">The peak this year is expected Sunday night into Monday morning, with the best conditions before sunrise on Monday the 12th. Over 50 meteors an hour could be visible under ideal conditions. To reach ideal conditions, find a place far from city lights (light pollution) and give yourself plenty of time to watch. It typically takes 15-20 minutes for eyes to fully adjust to the darkness. Meteors will appear to originate in the Northeast, near the constellation Perseus (hence the name), but try to watch as much of the sky as possible. Bring a lawn chair and some refreshments to make yourself comfortable (bug spray too!).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/08/Screenshot 2024-08-10 105518-1723308964726.png">Cloud cover may be an issue for some areas in the Midwest, but the South and West Coast look favorable for clear skies.
