A strong 7.4 magnitude earthquake shook the country of Taiwan early Wednesday morning, close to 8:00 local time (8 PM Tuesday night for the U.S. East Coast). Multiple casualties have been reported with hundreds injured. Dozens of buildings collapsed as the city shook.
The earthquake was located about 10 miles off Hualian on Taiwan's east coast and was about 20 miles deep. The quake even prompted evacuation advisories around Okinawa from the Japan Meteorological Agency, which they later lifted. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center based in Hawaii says the threat of any tsunami has passed.
