Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

After rounds of storms tracked through the northern Plains and Midwest the last few days, another pair of low-pressure systems will keep the severe weather threat around through at least Tuesday. The good news for folks in this region - a big cool down will eventually follow the rounds of storms!<h1>Severe Weather Outlooks</h1>A robust low-pressure system will tap into abundant heat and humidity to trigger scattered severe storms through the overnight hours.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-27 211118-1753672283435.png">All severe weather hazards (wind, hail, &amp; tornadoes) will be possible, with an elevated risk for tornadoes focused from Brainerd to Duluth. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-27 211036-1753672244883.png">A trailing low-pressure system and accompanying cold front will move from the Rockies into the Upper-Midwest on Monday, triggering scattered severe storms once again from Montana to Wisconsin.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-27 162835-1753655320200.png">The risk continues along the frontal boundary by Tuesday as storms move slightly farther south to include the I-80 corridor from Cheyenne to Chicago.<h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-27 162845-1753655330476.png">Forecast Timing</h1>Sunday's threat will ramp up late in the afternoon across the Upper-Midwest before the energy dives south overnight. Have multiple ways to get warnings that can wake you up in case you are in bed before the threat passes your area.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/07271-1753655380715.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Flooding</h1>Through the week, multiple rounds of heavy rain could spur multiple incidents of flash flooding. Pockets of 2-6" of rain are possible. Scattered flash flooding will be possible where the rounds of storms are more widespread or numerous. Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. A significant and long-lasting heat wave is currently impacting two-thirds of the population, prompting widespread heat alerts (above).Unusual and intense heat and humidity have settled over the Middle Mississippi and Ohio Valleys and are expected to persist through early next week. The Heat Risk for much of the country is red, which is a major level of heat risk. There are even many areas of purple, which is the highest level of heat danger: Extreme. These locations need to limit time outdoors, stay hydrated, and check on your neighbors.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/07-27 east-1753663011909.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Southeast</h1>Tampa, Florida, has already broken an all-time record high! Reaching 100° beats out the old record of 99° set on June 26, 2020. When you're breaking all-time records in FLORIDA, that's how you know how hot it truly is.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1949564203418910882" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1949564203418910882"></div>Heat alerts continue through Monday across the Southeast, with Heat Risk levels at their highest in the country. Most of the southeast is at extreme Heat Risk Monday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-27 132036-1753644183554.png">Highs are expected to climb into the upper 90s and may even reach 100 degrees in some areas. When combined with elevated humidity, the heat index could exceed 110 to 115 degrees, a level of heat that can be hazardous even for healthy individuals. These conditions are particularly dangerous for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, outdoor workers, and those without access to reliable air conditioning or hydration.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-27 183738-1753663069222.png">What makes this heat wave especially troubling is its expected duration and the lack of overnight relief. Typically, cooler nighttime temperatures help the body recover from the daytime heat, but high humidity levels are keeping nighttime temperatures elevated, offering little reprieve.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-27 132654-1753644428991.png"><h1>Mid South</h1>Heat alerts are expected to continue across parts of the Gulf Coast and Mississippi River Valley throughout the week. Just like parts of the Southeast, heat index values are going to climb to over dangerous levels near 115 degrees. Unlike the South, relief is on the way with a cold front and much cooler temperatures for the middle and end of next week!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-27 183811-1753663098142.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-27 183824-1753663111288.png"><h1>Northeast</h1>We even have heat advisories in the northeastern U.S, in particular, New England. Tampa Sets All-Time Record High; 150 Million Americans Sweating It Out

After monitoring a weak low-pressure system in the Gulf all of last week, the Atlantic Basin is quiet for now, while the Pacific is looking more active. Tropical waves moving off of Africa may have a slim chance to develop next week. The coast near the Carolinas is another area we may need to monitor in the mid-range forecast (6-10 day window).<h1>Central + Eastern Pacific</h1>Tropical Storm Iona has officially formed. Since the storm formed west of 140° longitude, it will get a name from the seldom-used Central Pacific Region. Another tropical wave just behind it has a low chance to develop over the next week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/tomer all three pac-1753671489275.jpg">The NHC is also watching a tropical wave for development in the eastern Pacific. It is still too early to determine it there will be any potential impacts to Mexico or the U.S., but it looks like the low will mostly be heading west.While Iona is not expected to directly impact Hawaii, big swells could lead to dangerous waves and currents on the beaches and offshore waters through the middle of next week.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Iona cone-1753671361064.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Even though this system is expected to stay south of the Hawaiian Islands, some increase in surf is possible.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/New Baron Video 3-1753473843349.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Why Has the Atlantic Been So "Quiet"?</h1>There are a few factors as to why the tropics have been quieter: Wind shear is the big one, along with other large-scale disruptions, like the displacement of a Hadley cell leading to additional sinking air closer to the tropics instead of farther north. Saharan dust and less robust warming of the ocean in some areas are also contributing factors.<h2>Saharan Dust</h2>Forecast models keep dust plumes from Africa from traveling across the Atlantic. This can suppress tropical activity since tropical systems favor moisture. You can see the Saharan Dust trailing behind the area of low pressure moving into the Gulf.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/New Baron Video 3-1753585647288.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Ocean Temperatures</h2>In what is known as the Main Development Region (MDR), sea surface temperatures have been a little cooler than the record-breaking pace they've been on the last two seasons (23' &amp; 24'). Tropical systems typically need sea surface temperatures of 80° at a depth of 150 ft for tropical formation. Currently, in the MDR, our temperatures are in the high 70s. We are slowly seeing some SSTs climbing to around 80°.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-23 073255-1753277589935.png">In fact, a lot of the season, in comparison to last year and the year before, has been a bit cooler. However, if you look at the numbers, it's been hovering around normal.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-22 142616-1753216233169.png">So what is actually normal? If we look only at the number of storms, it appears we're ahead of schedule. However, accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) in the Atlantic is less than 20% of normal for this point in the season.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-22 143043-1753216287218.png"><h1>Looking Ahead</h1>This early in the season, we're still trend spotting. Without a persistent El Niño setup to bring additional shear, we watch the water temperatures. In the Main Development Region, waters had been trending cooler - not anymore. Over the past few weeks, a noticeable spike in Ocean Heat Content has caused those temperatures through the column to average. Will this lead to a tropical wave developing into an organized system this week? It might, but the hostile conditions in the Atlantic won't give it much time, so the odds are not looking great.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/2025-07-26 09-41-04-1753544483254.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>

Hot temperatures along the East Coast fueled thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday, which produced wind gusts over 60 mph! Additional storms with a flooding potential will follow into the final day of the weekend as a weak low-pressure system moves toward the coast. Thunderstorm chances will keep temps down into the 70s and 80s. However, the heat returns into the first part of the week until another cold front moves in by midweek!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/forecast hgishshs tems-1753644535732.png"><h1>Forecast</h1>A front continues to move through the northeast, producing showers and thunderstorms. Damaging winds will be the primary concern once again, a day after a few locations saw winds gusting to 60 mph. Yep you read that right. The standing water from recent rains along with the water pulled out of the ground by stalks of corn can help make hot afternoons worse. Don't believe us? Some localized areas could sneak into the upper 70's and low 80's thanks to the corn. Imagine a 5% increase in the humidity.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-22 104736-1753203165516.png">That can jump the Heat Index by 5° if you're hot enough! It makes a difference after a while.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-22 104925-1753203019827.png">As with any sort of heat-related danger, it comes down to preparation - drinking plenty of water, and taking plenty of breaks. Be sure to check on your neighbors, even if they are a few miles away!

"Sweating" Corn Can Ramp Up Humidity in the Midwest

Rounds of rain have been rolling through the Plains and Midwest, leading to saturated soils. This has lead to a more significant flood potential into the early morning hours Saturday, before rain chances drop quickly through the rest of the weekend. A level 3 out of 4 risk (top of page) for flash flooding is in effect through early Saturday morning.In addition to flooding, scattered damaging winds and hail are possible from thunderstorms in the Front Range of Colorado and near the low-pressure system from Oklahoma into Missouri.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-25 211906-1753499959778.png">The low could help create enough turning motion to spur an isolated tornado. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-25 211941-1753499988944.png"><h1>Forecast</h1>Storms will continue to rumble across the Kansas City area after midnight, with conditions settling down by daybreak. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/overnightkc-1753500111079.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Additional rainfall of 2-4 inches will be possible, particularly in stronger storms.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-25 212216-1753500155044.png">

The state of Alabama is prone to seeing various types of weather from severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and winter weather. For college, Jesse attended the University of South Alabama where he received his degree in Broadcast Meteorology along with minors in Math and Geography. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/1-1739061270112.png">Around 6PM ET, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake was detected in the Western Caribbean between the Cayman Islands and Honduras. Over the past few hours, there has been a few aftershocks near the epicenter. Also, there has been a few smaller earthquakes near Puerto Rico.According to the USGS, it is not out of the ordinary to see earthquakes at this location. The last earthquake nearby this location was back in January 2018 with a magnitude of 7.5. A small tsunami was caused similar to tonight's earthquake. The danger of tsunamis have ended and there is no threat to the Gulf waters.We will keep you updated as this is a developing story.
