Aside from the two tropical storms that formed along the Gulf Coast, this year in the Atlantic has been fairly quiet. The lower-than-normal activity has been expected thanks to the major El Niño event that continues to build in the Pacific. While the season was <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/noaa-holds-steady-with-below-average-atlantic-hurricane-season-forecast">expected to have less activity than normal</a>, it doesn't mean the Atlantic will be devoid of tropical activity. <h1>Atlantic</h1>Cristobal formed in the Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday. This will be a short-lived system since it formed so far north and in cooler waters. It is expected to dissipate soon.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-12 114201-1786556531111.png">The National Hurricane Center is watching two other waves off the West Coast of Africa this week (top of page). Forecast models have been in solid agreement about the higher strength of the more western tropical wave, and its potential to develop, despite somewhat marginal environmental conditions. Invest 92-L is expected to become a tropical depression while moving west into the Caribbean. It will encounter high shear and dry air so it may not be able to survive for too long.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-12 081152-1786543916523.png">People in the Caribbean and United States should be monitoring the progress of this system closely over the next few days, just in case it survives the marginal conditions.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-12 114229-1786556557910.png">The next storm on the list in the Atlantic this season is Dolly. Atlantic Tropics: Several Systems to Monitor

A developing tropical system in the Central Pacific is being closely watched as it tracks toward Hawaii, where it could bring increasing winds, heavy rain, and rough surf later this week.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-12 094417-1786549468723.png">The Central Pacific Hurricane Center designated the disturbance of&nbsp;Potential Tropical Cyclone One-C&nbsp;on Wednesday morning. This designation allows the center to issue watches and warnings for a system that has not yet fully developed into a tropical cyclone but could still threaten land. Potential Tropical Cyclone advisories are being initiated at this time.&nbsp;The system is expected to continue generally westward over the next several days. Central Pacific Hurricane Center believes conditions should support additional organization and strengthening, with One-C expected to become a tropical storm later tonight or Thursday and move closer to the Hawaiian Islands by Friday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/1-1786586351264.png">While there is still some uncertainty about the system’s exact track, the GFS and Euro models&nbsp;indicate it is close enough to Hawaii for residents and visitors to prepare for potential impacts. Tropical storm conditions could reach portions of the state as the system approaches, even if the center does not move directly over an island. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/BARON 5-1786586526438.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Increasing winds will be one of the main concerns. Conditions could become especially gusty in areas where winds are enhanced by Hawaii’s mountainous terrain. The system could also produce periods of heavy rainfall, potentially creating localized flooding concerns.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/1-1786586628516.png">Ocean conditions are also expected to deteriorate as One-C gets closer. Larger swells generated by the system could lead to increasing surf and dangerous conditions along exposed coastlines.&nbsp;The Central Pacific Hurricane Center emphasizes that the forecast could change as the disturbance becomes better organized. Small adjustments in the track or strength of the system could make a significant difference in which islands see the greatest impacts.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-12 100801-1786550907653.png">People across Hawaii should continue checking forecast updates through the rest of the week and be prepared in case additional tropical alerts are issued.&nbsp;The Central Pacific Hurricane Center will continue issuing regular advisories as Potential Tropical Cyclone One-C moves toward the islands.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-12 100907-1786550962717.png">

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. A large area of high pressure continues to bring the heat across the United States. Extreme heat warnings and heat advisories are in effect across the central U.S. Find ways to stay cool and stay out of the sunshine.<h2>Central U.S.</h2>The long-lasting heat dome is making its way back eastward into the Central and Southern Plains this week! Extreme Heat Warnings are in effect for parts of Missouri, along with many heat advisories. Highs will soar into the triple digits, feeling a few degrees hotter with the humidity. Make sure to find adequate ways to stay cool!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-12 113613-1786556367166.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/HIGH VS HEAT INDEX-1786568322163.png">Feels-like temperatures remain dangerously hot across the central United States. Stifling Heat Slides East This Week

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

MIDWEST - Around lunchtime on Tuesday, intense storms rolled through Ohio with winds strong enough to flip a vehicle on the highway.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="2087203609205510446" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/2087203609205510446"></div>Wind reports were as strong as 99 mph in northern Indiana, which is as strong as a category 2 hurricane.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-11 122123-1786472511722.png"><h1>Wednesday</h1>The aforementioned wind and tornado threats will be the primary ones to watch. While damaging winds might be a lot easier to come by, we don't want to let our guard down. Make sure to have multiple ways to get those alerts.A MARGINAL (level 1 out of 5) risk for severe weather is in place. A few isolated wind gusts will be still possible into the overnight hours.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/1-1786585901964.png"><h1>Timing</h1>Rounds of storms are likely in the same spots through tonight, and the threat continues the next few days. This will lead to a flooding risk across these areas.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/fkdd-1786581347864.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Flooding</h1>With repeated rounds of storms the next few days, flash flooding will become a growing concern too. Series of Fronts Keeps the Midwest to Northeast Stormy

HIGH PLAINS - Tuesday proved to be an incredibly active day across the Central and High Plains. Storms in these parts had updrafts that exceeded 100 mph! Therefore, we were seeing hailstones that were 4.5" in diameter! That's about the size of a grapefruit. Once again, strong storms fired up Wednesday afternoon, bringing large hail and damaging winds. Wind gusts reached over 70 mph for portions of Iowa.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/plains winds-1786581631787.png"><h2>Overnight</h2>The severe threat will continue through Thursday morning. The threats we'll be tracking out here will be very similar to yesterday: damaging winds and some hail.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-12 200422-1786586713559.png">Some storms will hold together into the overnight hours.
