<p>Over the weekend of October 11th, and 12th, thousands of Alaskan residents along the western coast were slammed by the remnants of Typhoon Halong. The one super typhoon dipped below typhoon level strength, but still packed a powerful punch as it battered the coastline.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1978936489565212816" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1978936489565212816"></div><p>Nearly 100 mile per hour winds were recorded and storm surge swept homes off their foundations, leading to one of the most significant airlifts in Alaskan history as coastal villages were evacuated.</p><p>The communities of Kipnuk and Kwigillingok saw water levels more than 6 feet above their highest tide cycles.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1978173969028272296" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1978173969028272296"></div><p>Multiple shelters across the state have been opened for those whose lives have been impacted by the storm, but many of the communities are not accessible by roads and can only be reached via boat or airplane, making it a challenge for relief work to be done in the area. Local officials said even with emergency repairs many homes will not be livable by winter.</p><p>More than 1000 residents have been evacuated to various locations. Evacuees have been taken to Anchorage, but the trip is over 500 miles away, and while some shelters closer to home like Bethel, AK are open, they have already reached capacity.</p><p>We spoke with multiple organizations assisting with the relief efforts to learn more on what the disaster relief looks like, and the challenges they face to help these communities recover.</p><h1><u>WORLD CENTRAL KITCHEN:</u></h1><p>This is the second time WCK has responded to typhoon flooding in Alaska. In 2022, the remnants of Typhoon Merbok pounded Alaska's western coast, affecting 21,000 people during the peak of hunting and gathering season. Together with local groups, WCK delivered fresh food and water to families in need.&nbsp;</p><p>Our teams are flying across the flood-devastated regions of western Alaska to provide dry goods and warm meals to communities in need. October is Leave the Leaves Month

<p style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt; color: #454545;">Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

<p>La Niña was observed in September, leading to NOAA issuing a La Niña advisory. These conditions are expected to persist through winter into spring, with impacts likely for the upcoming winter season and beyond into next spring. La Niña often plays a role in determining storm tracks during the winter season and severe weather into the spring.</p><h1>What is La Niña?</h1><p>La Niña is one phase of a large circulation over the equatorial Pacific Ocean. The prevalent wind direction will churn up cooler or warmer water, based on the direction of the circulation. When winds are prevailing from the east, it churns up cooler waters near the coast of South America and to the west, while areas in the western Pacific see warmer than average water temperatures during this phase. These cooler waters, along with other large scale circulations, impact how air flows across the United States.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-10 110029-1760115646348.png">During strong La Niñas, the jet stream is typically more active from the Northwest through the Great Lakes. This effect is typically less pronounced during weaker events. This often favors better chances for precipitation across the northern tier of the country, including the Northwest and Great Lakes.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-10 095632-1760111817342.png"></p><h1>Impact for Winter 25'-26'</h1><p>NOAA releases their outlook for the upcoming winter season this Thursday (October 16th) but the Climate Prediction Center continuously updates outlooks for three month periods. These outlooks likely won't change much with next week's update but we'll bring you that forecast when it's released. The temperature and precipitation outlooks for December - February show conditions typical for a La Niña year, with below average temperatures favored in the Pacific Northwest.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-10 095641-1760111827269.png"></p><p>The precipitation outlook also favors conditions fairly typical for a La Niña winter, with above average precipitation favored around the Northern Rockies and Great Lakes/Ohio Valley.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-10 095637-1760111827269.png"></p><h1>Spring Severe Weather / Tornado Impacts</h1><p>La Niña is expected to decay through the spring months, which can have a big impact on the severe weather season. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.gfdl.noaa.gov/research_highlight/u-s-regional-tornado-outbreaks-and-their-links-to-spring-enso-phases-and-north-atlantic-sst-variability/">Studies have shown</a> a increase in the potential for tornado outbreaks over certain areas of the country as La Niña decays into a neutral or El Niño phase. These favored areas include the Central/Southern Plains and around the lower Great Lakes into the Mid-Mississippi Valley.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-10 105635-1760115430383.png"></p><p>This phase also <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.aoml.noaa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/ENSO_Tornado_Lee.pdf">favors stronger tornadoes</a>, as the number of high end tornadoes and outbreaks increase during this phase.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-10 100658-1760112433708.png"></p><p>Seasonal forecasts are difficult to predict with accuracy, so be sure to check the weather forecasts often with WeatherNation for the latest.</p>

La Niña Advisory Issued, Potential Impacts to Winter Precip & Springtime Tornadoes

<p>Flash flooding will continue to be possible in the southwestern United States over the next couple of days. Be sure to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://msc.fema.gov/portal/home">check your property's flood zone</a> and have a plan to seek higher ground if necessary. NEVER drive through flood waters if you cannot easily see the water's depth or the road below it. Multiple water rescues have been needed over the past few days. Remember, you're not only risking your life but the lives of the first responders if you drive into flooded roads.</p><p></p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1978098719095406800" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1978098719095406800"></div><p><br><br>The remnant moisture from the two most recent tropical systems in the Eastern Pacific, Priscilla and Raymond, led to heavy showers and thunderstorms over a wide range of terrain throughout the weekend. And now a trough out west and a ridge out east are helping to funnel moisture into New Mexico and Colorado.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web1-1760520329985.png"></p><p>In addition to the flood threat, severe storms are possible through Wednesday as the trough moving through the northern Rockies increases wind shear farther south. Damaging wind gusts have been a problem already this week, with places like Tempe clocking 71 mph winds from a microburst.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web7-1760520445087.png"></p><p>We have seen heavy rain and flooding with these storms, and that threat will continue over the next few days.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/2025-10-15 03-27-44-1760520491582.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>This surge of moisture across the southwest brings forth the chance for excessive rainfall in places like Alamosa, CO all the way down to Santa Fe, NM.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web3-1760520692663.png"><br>As a result, multiple flood warnings have been issued for several spots near Durango, CO. Some of these areas are near rivers and streams, which in some cases like near Rio Grande, have already seen roughly 8" of rain since the past weekend. This causes these areas to be more prone to flooding once more rain is in the forecast.<br><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web1-1760521119921.png"><br>We'll be detailing this more live on WeatherNation. <p>Most people who aren't mariners or active beach goers often don't check up on their local high and low tide cycles. But what happens when your favorite dockside restaurant has ankle deep water in the parking lot? That's what we call the King Tide, a phenomenon that occurs once or twice a year along the U.S. coastlines.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web2-1759748881043.png"></p><p>Caused by what's called a "perigee", that highlights a very close distance between the Earth and the moon. It occurs on a monthly basis. Being that the moon drives the tidal cycles on Earth, it's close proximity elevates the high and low tides, making coastal flooding that much more possible. A "supermoon" is a byproduct of the perigee, occurring three to four times a year. However, the two tend to not overlap for most of Earth's orbit around the sun.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web6-1759749414059.png"></p><p>We're also slowly trending towards "perihelion", the point in Earth's orbit where it's the closest to the Sun, this in turn will also enhance our tidal cycles. The combination of these three factors is what will bring us the "King Tide".</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web7-1759750231408.png"></p><p>The combination of these three factors are what influences the "King Tide". The King Tide: How the Tides can Impact Your Coastlines

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. <p><strong>NORTH CAROLINA </strong>- These abandoned houses were no match for the powerful swells generated by Humberto and Imelda, which brought high surf, flooding, and heavy rain to the Outer Banks. It is believed that up to 8 homes have succumbed to the Atlantic Ocean in the last few days. </p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1973423019470233900" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1973423019470233900"></div><p>Up until last Tuesday, 12 homes had been swept away into the Atlantic in the Outer Banks since 2020. Why are so many homes being swept away, you may ask? In many cases, what protected a house decades ago is no longer sufficient because the shore has receded, sea levels are higher, and strong storms have been more frequent or powerful.</p><h2>Coastal Impacts</h2><p>Humberto and Imelda dissipated in the Atlantic, but dangerous swells will still be likely in their wake. More Homes Succumb to the Atlantic Ocean

<p>Monsoon season has come and gone; September 30th marked the end of the 2025 season. The American Monsoon season runs from June 15 until September 30, so let's see how the season shaped up.</p><p>The Drought Monitor mid-June had most of the southwestern U.S. under drought conditions, with New Mexico under the worst of the conditions, under exceptional, level 5 drought.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-30 203810-1759286479364.png">By September 23, the final drought monitor of the season, most of the southwest worsened drought conditions, but the Mojave Desert saw improving conditions, as well as New Mexico, where we needed it.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-30 203815-1759286732227.png"></p><p>With the rainfall last weekend, Phoenix surpassed the average for the monsoon season, but most of this rain happened in a day. Otherwise, it was more of a non-soon season.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-30 203836-1759286678352.png">Some spots, like Las Vegas, saw a below-average monsoon season. In fact, this year we tied for the 18th driest monsoon season.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-30 204800-1759286908942.png">How about looking at the season from a lightning perspective? Helene's eyewall passed about 10 miles west-southwest of Perry, Florida at 11:10 p.m. ET on Florida's Gulf Coast. In the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, Helene was one of five landfalling storms along the Gulf coast, including three in Florida.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-24 135342-1758743646080.png"></p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5uqc6I6wcXM" start="0"></iframe></div><p>The remnants of Helene brought catastrophic flooding, which prompted a record 34 Flash Flood Emergencies across portions of Appalachia and Mid-South. Including the first ever for the city of Atlanta, GA after 11" of rain. The highest total from the storm topped out above 30" in North Carolina. A precursor event saturated the soils ahead of Helene. The USGS documented that the heavy rain on top of the impacted soils prompted more than 2000 landslides. 63 stream and river gauges exceeded their record flood levels during Helene. 2,700+ water rescues were documented, about half from storm surge and half from fresh water flooding.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot 2024-09-27 160234-1727474573331.jpg"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-24 140622-1758744396604.png">According to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://poweroutage.us">poweroutage.us</a>, a total of 7.4 million customers lost power at some point during Helene. <p>There's a new state record in North Dakota after this weekend's severe weather tore through the nation's 39th state.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1967665592955179443" src="https://x.com/NWSBismarck/status/1967665592955179443"></div><p>The National Weather Service offices in Bismarck and Grand Fork say North Dakota has broken the record for most tornadoes in a year, surpassing the previous total of 61 set in 1999.</p><p>Severe storms swept through Central North Dakota on Sunday, and Bismarck confirmed 15 tornadoes from this outbreak.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1968057424612606356" src="https://x.com/NWSBismarck/status/1968057424612606356"></div><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/0915 ND Most Tornadoes on Record-1757978378157.png"></p><p>North Dakota typically sees about 29 tornadoes each year, but before September 14th, the state had already seen 58 for 2025.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/2dgiWTWdp-0" start="0"></iframe></div><p>Preliminary ratings from Sunday's event include an EF-1 just west of Mercer, ND, and EF-2 level damage in the Denhoff, ND area. Additional EF-2 damage was found approximately 13 miles west of Linton, ND. The office says more details will be released as the surveys are completed.</p><p>Jeff Schild, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Bismarck said Sunday's event was a bit of an unusual set up, and resembled more of an event you would see in the southeastern U.S. instead of the plains. The high shear environment contributed to several tornadoes touching down, but also mentioned the lack of hail the storms produced.</p>

<p>September marks the start of National Preparedness Month.</p><p>In a new study done by Talker, 90% of Americans acknowledge they are at risk of a natural disaster, but only 46% of people said they were prepared for a disaster of any kind.</p><p>The study goes on to conclude that younger generations (Gen Z, Millennials) are more prepared for a disaster than older generations. We posed the question to our social media audience to see how prepared they are.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1965460391326351670" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1965460391326351670"></div><p>This month, we're teaming up with the American Red Cross to learn more how to better prepare ourselves in the event of a disaster.</p><h1><strong><u>WILDFIRES:</u></strong></h1><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Cc4PIrSn8Q4" start="0"></iframe></div><p></p><p>The Red Cross encourages those in wildfire prone areas to have a go-kit with at least three days of supplies that you can easily carry, a stay-at-home kit that contains two weeks of supplies, as well your important documents in a safe location.</p><p>The organization also provides <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.redcross.org/content/dam/redcross/get-help/pdfs/wildfire/EN_Wildfire-Safety-Checklist.pdf"><strong><u>a checklist</u></strong></a> of things to do before, during, and after a wildfire.</p><p>Taylar Sausen, a national spokesperson for the Red Cross said it's also important to know how you can stay connect when wildfires strike. Despite being past the peak, there is still plenty of hurricane season left and all it takes is a single storm to make a drastic impact to your community. That's why the Red Cross is encouraging those in hurricane prone areas to make a disaster plan now, ahead of the storm, and start finding supplies you may need now to avoid the rush and long lines when a storm approaches.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/K7sqHPreCwY" start="0"></iframe></div><p></p><p>"The best time to prepare for a disaster is well before it happens," said Mandy McMahon, a spokesperson for the National Red Cross.</p><p>McMahon emphasized the importance of making plans for staying home and evacuating when it comes to tropical systems for both coastal communities, but also inland areas that typically see impacts from tropical systems.</p><p>"Food, water, and medicine are the most important items, but also think about how you'll charge your devices." McMahon added as she encourages those with medical conditions to remember how live saving medical devices may need to be charged or may need replacement batteries.</p><p>McMahon also adds that you should be finding apps now that can help notify you of emergencies, but also of evacuation orders, places to find shelters, and other helpful resources during disasters. Create a go-kit with things you need in your daily life: food, water, first aid, etc. But consider other items you may need too. Extra clothing, blankets, shovels, and heating pads are all good options to include in your go-kits. We spoke with Remy Kennedy, a national spokesperson with the American Red Cross to learn more on how to prepare for winter weather.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/uqknztCRXmU" start="0"></iframe></div><p>Dr. Jim Siebert shared some of his past experience dealing with winter weather in locations that don't typically see snow. National Preparedness Month in Full Swing

<p>From Wilson's Warbler to Canadian Geese, millions of birds (we are excluding "Snowbirds" from this count) are kicking off their seasonal migration to warmer climates further south. To learn more about this tremendous trek, we spoke with ornithologist and aero-ecologist, Kyle Horton, Ph.D. from Purdue University.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/altubffHZ-U" start="0"></iframe></div><p>"We're well into fall migration across most of North America right now, and night after night there's going to be hundreds of millions of birds flying. Across the season, we'll be looking at billions of birds making their southward journey to their non-breeding or wintering grounds," said Horton who helps runs the migratory bird forecasting website: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://birdcast.info/"><strong>https://birdcast.info/</strong></a>.</p><p>The team utilizes weather radars, the same that we use to detect thunderstorms to also track their feathery friends. That means sometimes radars are actually showing birds rather than actual showers. You'll sometimes hear meteorologist refer to this as "clutter" on the radar imagery.</p><p>"The rain we're accustomed to seeing on radar is really intense, it's quite dense and it shows up on a it shows up as a more stronger signal," Horton added. Precipitation typically shows up as reds and oranges on most radar scales, where birds return typically show up as blues and greens. Horton said you can look at the texture of the radar image to identify whether the radar is showing rain or animals like birds or insects. Storms typically have a more elongated shapes and are irregular. Birds return a smoother more consistent shape.</p><p>Horton said typically birds try and time their travels with the arrival of frontal systems to make their journey a little easier. Oh My-Gration: Billions of Birds Set to Migrate this Season

<p>After marking the start of meteorological fall, nothing is more seasonal than looking up and seeing the bright red blood moon; and this year on September 7th, some people across the globe were able to actually see it. Here's some dazzling video from many different countries who were actually able to see it.<br></p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1965211049264848932" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1965211049264848932"></div><p>The blood moon is a phenomenon that occurs twice every three years globally. It'll happen when Earth passes directly between the moon and the Sun, also known as a total lunar eclipse. This process is also known as Umbra. This, in turn, blocks out all the direct sunlight from the moon. During a blood moon event, sunlight that passes through Earth's atmosphere gets scattered. Light with shorter wavelengths, such as blue and green, scatters, so their light is not reflected off the Moon, while colors with longer wavelengths, such as red and orange, are able to reach the Moon.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/eclipse 1-1757431064586.png"></p><p>While this phenomenon is impressive to see in person, atmospheric conditions actually play a role on the shade of the blood moon. For example, things like wildfire smoke, dust or even pollution can deepen the red shade of the blood moon, making it more striking in appearance.</p><p>Unfortunately, blood moon events aren't always visible worldwide. Being that the window of time the Earth passes in between the Sun and the moon is only 83 minutes, only certain spots can actually see the blood moon. In the window, the other half of the world is still in daytime! This most recent event, the blood moon was only visible in countries like Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. Looks like the Americas had to sit this one out!</p><p>Not all hope is lost, because the next predicted full lunar eclipse will actually be visible from North America! This will be visible in both North and South America, Australia and East Asia!</p>

The Blood Moon Rises in Several Areas Across the Globe!

<p>All eyes are on the Caribbean as we are now tracking the 13th named storm of the 2025 season - <strong>Melissa</strong>. In fact, we've been tracking Melissa and it's origins as a tropical wave for more than a week now and we could be watching it for another week still!<br><br>In the short term, Melissa will hardly move, bringing intense rainfall to Caribbean, especially between Puerto Rico and Jamaica, with over a foot off rain possible for Hispaniola (Haiti &amp; the DR).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/1-1761275117935.png">Melissa's lack of movement is due to its position between two ridges of high pressure in the mid-levels, while in the upper-levels, a trough is still keeping shear high to limit short-term development.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-23 055544-1761220550936.png">In addition to shear, Melissa is battling some dry air, two factors that often limit tropical development. These factors are expected to lessen in the next few days and Melissa is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane as it sits over the warm waters of the Caribbean this weekend into next week. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-23 052929-1761218989460.png">The latest forecast cone from the National Hurricane Center illustrates the chaos, showing little forward movement over the next few days. Forecast models are starting to come into better agreement about an eventual turn to the north through the Greater Antilles into the eastern Bahamas, likely after a slow drift to the west near Jamaica. It is not out of the question this system could still get pulled toward the east coast of the United States, but that currently looks to be an outlier of a possibility, with less than 5% of ensemble models supporting this chance.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/FORECAST-1761319117960.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Hurricane watches (in pink) and tropical storm warnings have been issued for Jamaica and Haiti. This means that hurricane or tropical storm force conditions are possible within the watch area within 48 hours. Melissa Meanders in the Caribbean, Expected to be a Major Hurricane

<p>As a slow-moving upper-level low approaches from the west, its energy will combine with plentiful moisture, increasing chances for heavy downpours and high rainfall accumulation rates.</p><p></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-22 171632-1761175234819.png"></p><p>At the surface, moisture will pool along a lifting warm front by the end of the week and into the weekend. The upper-low will provide plenty of lift, creating heavy rainfall with the amount of deep moisture available.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/1-1761275471975.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/1-1761275503348.png"></p><p></p><p>The Weather Prediction Center has highlighted portions of Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana on Friday and Saturday with a Level 2 Slight Risk of excessive rainfall. These outlooks will likely be tweaked in the coming days, with an upgrade not out of the question.</p><p></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-22 171707-1761175477939.png"></p><p>This entire area has been unusually dry over the last few weeks. San Antonio, for example, has not measured any amount of rain so far this October! Growing Flooding Concern in Texas on Friday and Saturday

<p>Multiple storm system are taking aim at the West Coast into the weekend and early next week, setting the stage for flood, wind, and snow impacts. These systems are known as atmospheric rivers, efficient water transport systems that bring tropical moisture pole-ward to give the west coast of the U.S. a third to half of its annual precipitation during the winter season.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-23 063624-1761223059228.png">Heavy rain and flooding are expected to be the most widespread issues the next few days, with isolated flash flooding expected Friday and Saturday (below) as rainfall rates increase to over 1" per hour at times.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-24 055258-1761306785630.png">Three systems are lining up, with the first and weakest system moving in on Friday. Heavy rain along a cold front will move inland Friday morning, spreading to the east by the late afternoon. A stronger low-pressure system takes aim at the coast on Saturday, with stronger winds expected, colder temperatures, and heavier rain. This system will increase wind shear and instability, leading to thunderstorms and possibly severe storms. Another system arrives Sunday morning with more rain and snow. Another Atmospheric River Late Week

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

<p><strong>GREAT LAKES </strong>- A large trough has been moving over the northern U.S. since early this week, bringing along with it gusty winds, scattered showers, and cooler temperatures.</p><p>As the upper-level trough and surface front move over the Great Lakes, they'll continue to usher in cooler air above warmer sea surface temperatures. The contrast between the two can enhance lake-effect showers. It's not quite cold enough for lake-effect snow with this system. These off-and-on showers, which have been dragging over the Great Lakes, will persist for the next couple of days.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/10-22 east-1761181250450.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p></p><p>With cold temperatures also being ushered in, temperatures will drop into the 30s and 40s across parts of the Central Plains and Mid-Atlantic. Great Lakes Storms, High Plains Winds, and Cooler Air

<p>An area of low pressure in the Pacific has moved onshore today, bringing showers, a few storms, and sprinkles of high-elevation snowfall. It will continue to bring some beneficial rain and snow to parts of the southwest, including California and Colorado. A few inches of snow will be possible in the Colorado Rockies.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/1-1761274595124.png"></p><p>However, it's where that system ends up by the weekend that is raising some eyebrows. As this system emerges out of the Rockies, it will be moving into notably warmer temperatures, which could be just enough to power storms into the severe threshold.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-22 150040-1761166845861.png"></p><p>But will this system have enough ingredients to talk about another weekend severe weather event? The Storm Prediction Center is already highlighting areas of severe weather from New Mexico from the overnight through Saturday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/1-1761274751230.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/1-1761274773394.png"></p><p></p><p>There is also a risk for isolated tornadoes in parts of Northwest Texas and southwestern Oklahoma.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/1-1761274801349.png"></p><p>Rainfall is another big component of this system. Our in-house weather models indicate the potential for widespread 2-3" of rain. Cut-Off Low Brings Rain, Snow, & Strong Storms Late-Week

<p>Ready for another La Niña winter? NOAA quietly released it's outlook for the upcoming winter season on Thursday, sans press conference since the government shutdown continues. The press conference has been rescheduled to November but the outlook is still ready for us to digest.<br><br>As a reminder, these outlooks are for the overall three month pattern and do not serve to predict seasonal snowfall totals or bursts of cold/warmth that are likely to impact areas highlighted with the seemingly opposite outlook.<br><br>The National Weather Service released the following video showcasing the newly released outlooks for temperature, precipitation, and drought from December through February.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1978839667907744157" src="https://x.com/NWS/status/1978839667907744157"></div><h1>Temperature</h1><p>Above average temperatures are favored across the southern tier of the United States, while below average temperatures are favored across the Upper-Midwest and Northwest. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-17 065848-1760706897085.png"></p><h1>Precipitation</h1><p> As the jetstream is likely to remain more active across the northern tier of the country, allowing for cooler air, it should also allow for more storms to track through these areas. As such, above average precipitation is favored from the Northwest through the Great Lakes, while drier than average conditions are expected from Southern California through Florida and the Carolinas. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-17 065852-1760706026499.png"></p><h1>Influences</h1><p>In case you missed it, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/la-nina-advisory-issued-how-this-could-affect-the-winter-season"><u>a La Niña Advisory was issued last week</u></a> as these conditions were observed in the equatorial Pacific west of South America. La Niña is expected to persist through winter, which is one of the primary reasons the winter outlook favors the areas it does. La Niña patterns vary greatly from year to year, depending on the strength of La Niña and the phase of the PDO (Pacific Decadal Oscillation). </p><p>The graphic below shows the typical pattern of the Pacific and Polar jets during a La Niña winter, which usher in cooler and wet air masses. <br><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-17 065856-1760707324994.png"></p><p>There is lower confidence that La Niña continues through the late winter and early spring (graphic below), which could throw a wrench in the seasonal forecast. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-17 073303-1760707994646.png"></p><p>ENSO (El Niño &amp; southern Osciallation) neutral conditions have a less obvious pattern influence, but wetter conditions can develop farther south than during<strong> </strong>La Niña. NOAA Releases Outlook for Winter 25-26'

<p>October has been relatively quiet in terms of severe weather. That all came to an end Saturday as storms rumbled through the Central and Southern Plains. A few storms actually produced severe weather reports, some of which were classified as tornadoes.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-19 155805-1760911139185.png">The National Weather Service in Little Rock, Arkansas, confirmed an EF-1 tornado was found in Hot Spring County from Saturday's storms.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-19 155304-1760911134206.png"></p><h1>Forecast Timing</h1><p>Now, the front is aiming for the northeastern U.S. One thing we've noticed is the lack of lightning with these thunderstorms, but the winds have been howling along the front. Through Monday morning, the severe weather threat continues into New England, for cities such as Boston, MA.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/10-19_rne bams3k overnight-1760926909056.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Severe Outlook</h1><p>As for severe weather, not much is expected behind this front. The SPC only calling for general thunderstorms in the forecast for some of the coastal northeast cities.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web4-1760955877378.png"><br>With regards to rainfall, the northeast is not totally out of the woods yet. We still have a marginal (level 1 out of 4) risk for excessive rain.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web7-1760956041292.png"><br>The Storm Prediction Center's tornado outlook is low, but non-zero, for cities including Baltimore, New York, and Philadelphia. It may not be until early Monday morning before the front actually moves through.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-19 201910-1760926771887.png">In fact, on Sunday night, a tornado warning happened just south of the D.C. area.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-19 201521-1760926794802.png"></p><h1>Total Accumulation</h1><p>The severe storms will also be capable of producing heavy rainfall that could lead to flooding. Strong Fall Front Fires Up Severe Chances Through Monday Morning

<p>A ridge of high pressure has been responsible for the quiet and warm days across the central U.S., but on the western periphery of this ridge, a trough will attempt to slide in and ignite severe weather chances across the High Plains. The storms that are steered between these two upper-level systems are what we often refer to as "ridge-riding" thunderstorms.</p><p></p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/2025-10-16 05-09-22-1760612987566.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>On Thursday, another MARGINAL (level 1 out of 5) risk is issued as the cold front shifts down into eastern Colorado and western Kansas, even extending all the way into central Nebraska. All kinds of severe weather are possible.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/1-1760669659768.png"></p><p>There is a small risk of tornadoes in the latest SPC advisory for Thursday. It covers cities from North Platte, NE, over to Colby, KS and as far south as Cheyenne Wells, CO. Make sure you have a way of getting notified if anything is to touch down.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/1-1760640961225.png"></p><p>The cold front keeps pushing east into Missouri and Oklahoma for Friday. Similar to Thursday, severe potential will exist during the heating of the day but some storms could remain strong even after sunset! <p>As of Wednesday, all evacuation orders have been lifted for Los Angeles after torrential rain fell over burned areas. <span style="color: rgb(10, 10, 10)">The warnings were issued for areas with burn scars from earlier fires, like the Palisades, Hurst, and Sunset fire zones, due to the threat of mud and debris flows.</span> Heavy rainfall, snow, and gusty winds continue to calm down for the southern half of the Golden State as a strong trough continues to move to the northeast.</p><p>Rainfall reached up to 9 inches in California's Haines Canyon, in southern California. The threat of heavy rainfall and snow moves to the northern half of the state this morning.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/2025-10-15 03-23-08-1760520223806.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p></p><p>Rainfall totals appear impressive for an October storm system in California, considering it is early in the season for such heavy precipitation.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-14 200559-1760493964815.png"></p><h1>Rain &amp; Flooding</h1><p>Flash flooding and debris flows will be possible through early Wednesday despite the rain having already happened. The heaviest of the rain has occurred, with storm totals likely having been upwards of 3 inches, which keeps the burn-scarred areas of southern California from recent wildfires at risk.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-14 144824-1760474941902.png"></p><h1>Snowfall</h1><p>Once this event is complete by Wednesday afternoon, snowfall totals may have topped a foot or even two feet in the high Sierra, while areas around the Donner Pass can expect 6-12 inches at the summit. Sierra to the Rockies: Flooding Rain & Heavy Snow

<p>A low-pressure system that has tracked up the East Coast continues to bring threats of coastal flooding, heavy rainfall, and strong winds. While this system has not developed, and is not expected to develop, any tropical characteristics, it’s behaving much like an early-season Nor’easter, delivering similar impacts minus the cold and snow. Areas along the shores of North Carolina to New England were impacted by this system.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1977894622975430882" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1977894622975430882"></div><p>The system is expected to move away from the coast through Tuesday but New Jersey still had a handful of strong wind reports on Monday. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web 14-1760436387824.png"></p><h2><strong>Rainfall</strong></h2><p>Heavy rain was very localized from this system, and will be far and few especially as it moves away from the East Coast. But a few daily rainfall records were still broken on Monday. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web 13-1760436496566.png"></p><p>A few scattered rain showers still remain possible.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/10-13 east-1760408242196.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p></p><p>Coastal flood alerts have been slowly ending for much of the Atlantic Coast. Sea water flooding during high tides could still approach 2-3 feet of inundation in some areas (warning areas in dark green).</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web 12-1760436278168.png"></p><p>The major flood stage is expected to be reached around the southern Chesapeake, mostly during high tides. October Nor'easter Wrapping Up For the Atlantic

<p>The National Weather Service in Grand Forks, ND, has ruled that a tornado near Enderlin, ND, caused EF-5 level damage upon further investigation. This marks the end of 12 years without a surveyed EF-5 tornado in the U.S. The last time EF-5 damage was reported from a tornado was in May of 2013 in Moore, OK.</p><p>The tornado is estimated to have wind speeds greater than 210 miles per hour. This tornado was on the ground for 12.1 miles with a width of just over a mile! Sadly, this storm caused three fatalities.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-06 104454-1759769110628.png"></p><p>Here is more on what led the NWS to upgrade its survey findings:</p><blockquote><p><em>"The National Weather Service in Grand Forks conducted additional surveys and worked extensively with wind damage experts to further investigate the 20 June 2025 Enderlin, ND tornado #1. The estimated maximum wind speed of the Enderlin, ND tornado #1 is greater than 210 mph and occurred during the time of the train derailment south of Enderlin, ND. The analysis involved forensic damage wind speed estimates for tipping several fully-loaded grain hopper cars and lofting of tanker cars, including one empty tanker car that was tossed about 475.7 ft (145 m)."</em></p></blockquote><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-06 102949-1759768203710.png">We spoke with the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, ND, to learn more about the decision to upgrade the tornado rating and the factors that influenced the decision.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/xSnzPzENapk" start="0"></iframe></div><h1>SET-UP</h1><p>On June 20, 2025, a derecho brought wind gusts of 70 -105 mph to the north central U.S., spanning over 400 miles and leaving hundreds of thousands of households without power. Multiple long-track, destructive tornadoes were within this storm system.</p><p style="text-align: start">A derecho is a long-lived severe wind event, with specific criteria about the length and width of the damaging wind swath. The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.spc.noaa.gov/misc/AbtDerechos/derechofacts.htm"><strong><u>SPC has a detailed page</u></strong></a> dedicated to these destructive windstorms. Several typically occur each year, though they can vary in intensity and area. A notable <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/one-year-ago-the-midwest-derecho"><strong><u>derecho ripped through Des Moines in 2020</u></strong></a>, producing hurricane-force winds and widespread damage.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/2025-06-21%2005-35-48-1750505871964.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2 style="text-align: start">OTHER REPORTS</h2><p style="text-align: start">Wind gusts in North Dakota and Minnesota (as well as northern South Dakota) were impressive, many over hurricane strength. A wake-low also developed behind the leading edge, producing severe strength winds (58+ mph) in some locations for over an hour!</p><p style="text-align: start"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot%202025-06-21%20053620-1750505847379.png">Bemidji, Minnesota, was hit particularly hard in the overnight hours as an intense bout of winds moved through the area, with a tornado potentially embedded in the circulation. The Bemidji Regional Airport reported a gust to 106 mph, with widespread damage reported in the area.</p><p style="text-align: start"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot%202025-06-21%20053627-1750505847378.png">The widely spanning severe winds have left hundreds of thousands of households in the dark the following morning, with some counties reporting well over 60-60% of customers without power. As a reminder, if you're going to run a generator to power anything, keep it at least 25 feet away from any opening in your home, like windows and doors.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/1-1750541351436.png"></p><p style="text-align: start">This was one of many severe weather events that pushed<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/north-dakota-breaks-yearly-tornado-record"> North Dakota to break their yearly tornado record</a>.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/2dgiWTWdp-0" start="0"></iframe></div><h1></h1>

Upgraded North Dakota Tornado Ends EF-5 Drought

<p>The Eastern Pacific has had a fairly average season so far, with periods of high activity at times. 17 storms have been named thus far, with the total seasonal energy (ACE) running just barely above average (101%). Moisture from Raymond and Post Tropical Priscilla is expected to bring heavy rain chances to the Southwest.</p><h1>Post Tropical Priscilla</h1><p>Priscilla is no more as it has lost its tropical characteristics as it weakened before making landfall near Ensenada, Mexico. Moisture from this system is expected to cause flooding as it moves into the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/moisture-returns-to-the-southwest-some-priscilla-influence-later">Desert Southwest</a>.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/1-1760135797187.png"></p><h1>Raymond</h1><p>Tropical Storm Raymond formed west of Acapulco, Mexico and will bring the threat of heavy rain, strong winds, and rough surf. Eastern Pacific: Raymond Targets Baja California, Desert Southwest with Downpours

<h1>TEMPERATURES</h1><p>A cold front sweeping through the Plains has brought a noticeable temperature drop behind it. Widespread <strong>Frost Advisories </strong>and <strong>Freeze Warnings </strong>have now continued into Wednesday morning. Daytime highs are dropping 20+ degrees from where they were Sunday for cities where the cold front has crossed. As impressive as that is, we're only getting back to where seasonal avereges, which shows how warm it's been for a little while. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-07 073601-1759844169282.png"></p><h1>RAIN / STORMS</h1><p>An upper-level trough is also contributing to this storm setup, supporting a surface cold front expected to move east and southeast through Wednesday. With dew points in the 60s, there’s plenty of moisture to fuel thunderstorms, but limited instability should keep most storms below severe thresholds.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-07 073730-1759844263068.png"></p><p>The frontal system will continue tapping into Gulf moisture as it moves through the Mid-South and Ohio Valley. The available moisture will spark a flash flooding threat, as several cities get hit for 2 days in rain as this system slows down.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/10-06_rne bams3k-1759802883898.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>The Weather Prediction Center has issued <strong>excessive rainfall outlooks</strong> through Tuesday across these regions. They have now been upgraded to <strong>slight</strong> (level 2 out of 4), but rain rates may get as heavy as 1-2" per hour.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-07 073642-1759844214639.png">With high rain rates, rainfall totals between 2-4" are possible by the time it's all said and done. Many areas have already picked up a few inches of rain already, here's what more we could have in store</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-07 073851-1759844339091.png"></p><p>We’ll keep tracking this system as it shifts east through midweek. The good news is cooler, drier air settles in behind it, bringing a welcome taste of fall once the storms clear out.</p>

Fall Front Triggers Frost and Storm Threat

<p>Grab the pumpkin spice and apple cider donuts, fall foliage has been developing quickly across the United States, with more color this week dropping into the middle latitudes!<br><br>The latest forecast from <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.explorefall.com/fall-foliage-map">Explore Fall</a> (top of page) shows peak color emerging across the higher elevations of the Colorado Rockies, and the Beartooth and Wind River Ranges in Wyoming over the next seven days (September 30 - October 6).<br><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-29 203511-1759199719401.png"></p><p>Color has quickly developed and already peaked for regions in the dark orange and red shades above (orange to red areas), much of it across the Rockies and Cascades. <p><strong>ROCKIES -</strong> A strong, upper-level low-pressure system is moving through the western United States, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, snow, and wind.
