There's a new state record in North Dakota after this weekend's severe weather tore through the nation's 39th state.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1967665592955179443" src="https://x.com/NWSBismarck/status/1967665592955179443"></div>The National Weather Service offices in Bismarck and Grand Fork say North Dakota has broken the record for most tornadoes in a year, surpassing the previous total of 61 set in 1999.Severe storms swept through Central North Dakota on Sunday, and Bismarck is still doing storm surveys and confirming the number of actual touchdowns that occurred during the event. Once finalized, a new record will be set.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/0915 ND Most Tornadoes on Record-1757978378157.png">North Dakota typically sees about 29 tornadoes each year, but before September 14th, the state had already seen 58 for 2025.<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/2dgiWTWdp-0" start="0"></iframe></div>Preliminary ratings from Sunday's event include an EF-1 just west of Mercer, ND, and EF-2 level damage in the Denhoff, ND area. Additional EF-2 damage was found approximately 13 miles west of Linton, ND. The office says more details will be released as the surveys are completed.Jeff Schild, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Bismarck said Sunday's event was a bit of an unusual set up, and resembled more of an event you would see in the southeastern U.S. instead of the plains. The high shear environment contributed to several tornadoes touching down, but also mentioned the lack of hail the storms produced.

September marks the start of National Preparedness Month.In a new study done by Talker, 90% of Americans acknowledge they are at risk of a natural disaster, but only 46% of people said they were prepared for a disaster of any kind.The study goes on to conclude that younger generations (Gen Z, Millennials) are more prepared for a disaster than older generations. That's why the Red Cross is encouraging those in hurricane prone areas to make a disaster plan now, ahead of the storm, and start finding supplies you may need now to avoid the rush and long lines when a storm approaches.<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/K7sqHPreCwY" start="0"></iframe></div>"The best time to prepare for a disaster is well before it happens," said Mandy McMahon, a spokesperson for the National Red Cross. From Wilson's Warbler to Canadian Geese, millions of birds (we are excluding "Snowbirds" from this count) are kicking off their seasonal migration to warmer climates further south. To learn more about this tremendous trek, we spoke with ornithologist and aero-ecologist, Kyle Horton, Ph.D. from Purdue University.<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/altubffHZ-U" start="0"></iframe></div>"We're well into fall migration across most of North America right now, and night after night there's going to be hundreds of millions of birds flying. Across the season, we'll be looking at billions of birds making their southward journey to their non-breeding or wintering grounds," said Horton who helps runs the migratory bird forecasting website: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://birdcast.info/">https://birdcast.info/</a>.The team utilizes weather radars, the same that we use to detect thunderstorms to also track their feathery friends. That means sometimes radars are actually showing birds rather than actual showers. You'll sometimes hear meteorologist refer to this as "clutter" on the radar imagery."The rain we're accustomed to seeing on radar is really intense, it's quite dense and it shows up on a it shows up as a more stronger signal," Horton added. Precipitation typically shows up as reds and oranges on most radar scales, where birds return typically show up as blues and greens. Horton said you can look at the texture of the radar image to identify whether the radar is showing rain or animals like birds or insects. Storms typically have a more elongated shapes and are irregular. Birds return a smoother more consistent shape.Horton said typically birds try and time their travels with the arrival of frontal systems to make their journey a little easier. After marking the start of meteorological fall, nothing is more seasonal than looking up and seeing the bright red blood moon; and this year on September 7th, some people across the globe were able to actually see it. Here's some dazzling video from many different countries who were actually able to see it. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1965211049264848932" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1965211049264848932"></div>The blood moon is a phenomenon that occurs twice every three years globally. It'll happen when Earth passes directly between the moon and the Sun, also known as a total lunar eclipse. This process is also known as Umbra. This, in turn, blocks out all the direct sunlight from the moon. During a blood moon event, sunlight that passes through Earth's atmosphere gets scattered. Light with shorter wavelengths, such as blue and green, scatters, so their light is not reflected off the Moon, while colors with longer wavelengths, such as red and orange, are able to reach the Moon.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/eclipse 1-1757431064586.png">While this phenomenon is impressive to see in person, atmospheric conditions actually play a role on the shade of the blood moon. For example, things like wildfire smoke, dust or even pollution can deepen the red shade of the blood moon, making it more striking in appearance.Unfortunately, blood moon events aren't always visible worldwide. Being that the window of time the Earth passes in between the Sun and the moon is only 83 minutes, only certain spots can actually see the blood moon. In the window, the other half of the world is still in daytime! This most recent event, the blood moon was only visible in countries like Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. Looks like the Americas had to sit this one out!Not all hope is lost, because the next predicted full lunar eclipse will actually be visible from North America! This will be visible in both North and South America, Australia and East Asia!

The Blood Moon Rises in Several Areas Across the Globe!

As an upper-level high weakens and pivots south, moisture at the surface and stronger upper-level energy will combine to bring the threat of heavy thunderstorms back to New Mexico and West Texas.<h1>Timing</h1>Daily rounds of thunderstorm complexes are expected to persist through the weekend. Everyone's going back to school and bracing for the return of Fall. Before we slip into winter some of the top destinations are to some notably cooler locations, for interesting reasons. Folks are trying to sneak in an Alaskan cruise before a trip like that is far to cold. Top destinations that are in the country:<ul><li>Seattle</li><li>Orlando</li><li>New York City</li></ul><h1>Trends this year</h1>Domestic travel appears more affordable vs last year in some key areas, according to AAA. Gas prices are expected to be stable as we close out Summer unofficially. Transportation analytics reccomend traveling early in the day to avoid the worst congestion. <ul><li>Domestic flights are 6% cheaper, with an average of $720 per ticket.</li><li>Hotel stays in the U.S. have seen an 11% decrease</li><li>Car rentals are 3% cheaper, with the average cost for a multi-day booking at $545</li><li>International car rentals are down 42% for anyone heading to Europe</li><li>Cruise prices have dropped 9% that depart from international ports</li><li>International flights are up 8% with round-trip tickeds running over $1,400</li></ul><h1>FORECAST</h1>As for who should brace for additional issues, even if you're just throwing something on the grill, the Gulf Coast States appear to have the highest threat of rain. AAA: Travel Expected to be Cheaper this Labor Day

Hard to imagine the skies going dark at 6 o'clock in August isn't it? That's what happened on Monday as nearby thunderstorms kicked up a wall of dust in portions of Arizona. Let's take a look at what happened on Monday night.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-26 061343-1756210460878.png">The threat of severe storms was in the area and appeared to be verified. The flash, which stretched from Eastern Texas to Kansas City, MO occurred in October 2017 during a mesoscale convective system. The flash covered 515 miles across a notorious stormy hot spot within the United States. A distance that would normally take eight or nine hours to drive, was covered in mere seconds. The new record surpasses the previous from a 2020 thunderstorm across the Southern United States. So how did a lightning strike from 2017 somehow come out the blue to beat the 2020 record? The WMO said this particular flash wasn't identified initially during the 2017 analysis, but was later discovered after re-examination of data.“This new record clearly demonstrates the incredible power of the natural environment. Additionally, WMO assessment of environmental extremes such as this lightning distance record testify to the significant scientific progress in observing, documenting and evaluating such events. According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Juneau, Alaska, the Mendenhall River crested at a record level of 16.65 feet (major flood stage). This level exceeds the 2024 record of 15.99 feet. Mendenhall Glacier outburst sends record water surge into Alaska's capital city

A powerful line of storms raced from southwest Kansas to the Gulf overnight Sunday night into Monday morning. As it was making the journey, damaging winds dotted its path. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-05 111102-1754414312792.png">After a largely quiet trek through Oklahoma, the Mesoscale Convective System flexed in Dallas. A wind gust of 89 mph was clocked at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport at approximately 5:39 AM CDT. The lack of widespread damage with a gust like that meant the National Weather Service office in Fort Worth was going to dig a little deeper. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-05 112013-1754414543709.png">After doing some digging, including checking with another nearby radar, they determined a microburst caused the localized 89 mph report, the highest ever at the airport. That beat the previous highest 3 second wind gust of 81 mph back on August 2, 1985.

This collision creates a buildup of energy that causes magnetic reconnection, when magnetic field lines snap and explosively realign, flinging away nearby particles at high speeds.Flying through the polar cusp allows the TRACERS satellites to study the results of these magnetic explosions, measuring charged particles that race down into Earth’s atmosphere and collide with atmospheric gases – giving scientist the tools to reconstruct exactly how changes in the incoming solar wind affect how, and how quickly, energy and particles are coupled into near-Earth space.“The successful launch of TRACERS is a tribute to many years of work by an excellent team,” said David Miles, TRACERS principal investigator at the University of Iowa. “TRACERS is set to transform our understanding of Earth’s magnetosphere. We’re excited to explore the dynamic processes driving space weather.”Small Satellites Along for RideAthena EPIC is a pathfinder mission that will demonstrate NASA’s use of an innovative and configurable commercial SmallSat architecture to improve flexibility of payload designs, reduce launch schedule, and reduce overall costs in future missions, as well as the benefits of working collaboratively with federal partners. In addition to this demonstration for NASA, once the Athena EPIC satellite completes its two-week commissioning period, the mission will spend the next 12 months taking measurements of outgoing longwave radiation from Earth.The PExT demonstration will test interoperability between commercial and government communication networks for the first time by demonstrating a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nasa.gov/communicating-with-missions/wideband-technology/">wideband polylingual terminal</a> in low Earth orbit. This terminal will use software-defined radios to jump between government and commercial networks, similar to cell phones roaming between providers on Earth. These terminals could allow future missions to switch seamlessly between networks and access new commercial services throughout its lifecycle in space.The REAL mission is a CubeSat that will investigate how energetic electrons are scattered out of the Van Allen radiation belts and into Earth’s atmosphere. Shaped like concentric rings high above Earth’s equator, the Van Allen belts are composed of a mix of high-energy electrons and protons that are trapped in place by Earth’s magnetic field. Studying electrons and their interactions, REAL aims to improve our understanding of these energetic particles that can damage spacecraft and imperil astronauts who pass through them.&nbsp;The TRACERS mission is led by David Miles at the University of Iowa with support from the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas. NASA’s Heliophysics Explorers Program Office at the agency’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, manages the mission for the Heliophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. The University of Iowa, Southwest Research Institute, University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of California, Berkeley, all lead instruments on TRACERS.The Athena EPIC mission is led by NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, and is a partnership between National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Space Force, and NovaWurks. Athena EPIC’s launch is supported by launch integrator SEOPS. Today, July 23rd, is the peak of the Dog Days of Summer!But what does that mean? Well, buckle up, turn on some Florence + The Machine, because we're exploring the history of this phrase and what exactly it means.The Dog Days of Summer got its name from the "Dog Star" Sirius, the brightest star visible from Earth, outside of our Sun. The Ancient Greeks named it that because of its "scorching" appearance. The Greeks and later the Romans believed that this star, which is best viewed at rising dawn, brought extreme heat, drought, and even disease. The Romans postulated that the star's heat and brightness combined with the heat of the sun, resulting in hotter days. Ancient Egyptians (~3200 BC) also believed the appearance of this star brought with it extreme heat, but could also predict the Nile's flood season.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/GwknORyWYAY8EbI-1753306536003.jpg">But how did the phrase "Dog Days of Summer" come to be?Sirius is a part of the constellation Canis Major, which is Latin for the "Greater Dog", which was detailed in the works of Ptolemy back in the 2nd century. The phrase "Dog Days of Summer" became popularized once it was translated from Latin about 500 years ago. A once-feared point in the year in ancient times has become a household phrase as we developed a further understanding of astronomy, climatology, and meteorology. Sirius peaks in visibility from behind the sun on July 23rd, and the "dog days" fall 20 days before and after its peak. (July 3rd - August 11th)If you want to view the star, it's best seen about 75 minutes before sunrise, looking East!

July 21-24 is Florida's Tropical Training Week.<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weather.gov/jax/FloridaTropicalTrainingWeek2025">FROM NWS JACKSONVILLE: </a>National Weather Service meteorologists across the state of Florida are teaming-up before the peak of hurricane season to review recommended tropical readiness, preparedness, response and recovery actions. That's why they are offering 3&nbsp;virtual training sessions daily that ANYONE can attend - you just need access to a mobile device or computer.&nbsp;The training is free; you just need to register in advance. Up to 1,000 people can register for each training session, and they are offering 3 training sessions each day. Please know that this information is tailored for Florida residents, as we reference resources from the Florida Division of Emergency Management. Florida NWS Offers Free Tropical Training

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

A fire tornado was spotted near La Sal, Utah on Saturday, July 12 (below). This is also known as a firenado or fire whirl. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1944827307769913683" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1944827307769913683"></div>This formed because of the Deer Creek Fire burning in Utah. The fire is over 14,000 acres and 7% contained. The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weather.gov/gjt/12July2025_FireInducedTornado">National Weather Service out of Grand Junction, CO</a> has given this a preliminary EF-2 rating. They stated that the firenado was on the ground for about 12 minutes. The report put out states, "Many of the affected structures burned&nbsp;after the tornado occurred, but&nbsp;wind damage sustained by the remaining structures resulted in the tornado being given an&nbsp;EF-2 rating."No residents or fire personnel were injured. <h2>How does a firenado happen?</h2>1. Intense Heat from a Wildfire: A large wildfire produces an enormous amount of heat, which causes the air directly above it to rapidly rise. This rising hot air creates a powerful updraft.2. Spinning Air is Introduced: If there are strong winds or turbulent conditions nearby, they can introduce rotation into this updraft. The rotation could be from wind shear (a change in wind direction or speed with height) or from nearby topography funneling the wind.3. Vortex Tightens and Strengthens: As the hot air continues to rise and spin, it forms a vortex — similar to a dust devil. The spinning column of air can tighten and intensify, pulling flames, smoke, ash, and burning debris upward into the air.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/07168-1752693521959.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. ALASKA – Around 12:38 PM AKDT on July 16, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck about 50 miles south of Sand Point, Alaska, at a depth of approximately 12.5 miles.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1945586410540450237" src="https://x.com/NWS_NTWC/status/1945586410540450237"></div>According to the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?extent=22.14671,-130.16602&amp;extent=51.67256,-59.85352">USGS,</a> as of 5:00 PM AKDT, more than 20 aftershocks of magnitude 3.0 or higher had been recorded. Alaska:Tsunami Alerts Canceled After 7.3M EarthQuake

We've got a low-pressure system out over the open waters, sitting on the warm Gulf Stream waters in the middle of September. Sounds like tropical mischief, right? While nothing is expected to gain tropical characteristics over the next day or so, we could still have mischief.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-15 091914-1757949628000.png"><h2>Forecast Rainfall</h2>Arguably, the biggest impact of this low spinning onshore will be the rainfall, especially where it falls, with many of the highest totals concentrated in North Carolina and Virginia.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-16 201740-1758075465932.png">An excessive rainfall outlook has been issued through Wednesday for rainfall totals upwards of 3-5" with localized maximums being even higher.<h1>Forecast Winds</h1>It might not be "tropical," but the highest wind gusts could approach tropical-storm-force at times. It looks like it might not be the wind that causes a ton of problems, but the direction of the wind: coastal flooding and rip current risks could pose some dangerous problems at times. Coastal inundation is only expected to approach a foot or two in low-lying, susceptible areas of the coast but the rip current risk is high along the shorelines.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Web1-1758107888500.png">

Coastal Low Spins Trouble Onshore

We are now a week after the climatological peak of Atlantic Hurricane Season, so where is the activity? Several factors contribute to this season being extremely quiet so far. For one, it has been dry and stable with more wind shear around the Atlantic Basin. That has helped limit storm development off the coast of Africa. Invest 92L has become organized enough to be dubbed Tropical Depression Seven. This will likely become Gabrielle in the next day or so as it moves northwest. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-17 030509-1758099925464.png">Currently, there is no direct hazard to land, however it might be a close call for the island of Bermuda. Many of the spaghetti plots that take it out to sea sooner are stronger - if it were to remain weak, it could affect some islands, but it might not be a tropical storm at that point.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-17 025830-1758099890670.png">Meanwhile, in the next few days, a plume of Saharan dust will move around the tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic, reducing chances for thunderstorms to organize, but there is a potential for some slow development after the fact.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/09-16 saharan dust-1758076139006.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>There is another tropical wave that the NHC is also monitoring set to roll off of the west coast of Africa. Nothing is expected to develop in the next few days, with the earliest timeline starting this weekend for that one<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-16 202919-1758076167654.png">Do not let your guard down! September is historically the peak of hurricane season, and ocean conditions remain favorable for additional development. However, the NHC urges residents along the Atlantic basin to monitor updates closely.<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/W2bhqfX0B0A" start="0"></iframe></div>What is slightly concerning are the water temperatures in the Gulf. Right now, they are 1°C warmer than they usually are for this time of the year. That being said, it's been tough to get anything over those warm waters so far this season-let's hope that continues.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-13 051452-1757762098585.jpg">As always, preparedness is key. Whether or not this particular system develops into a named storm, it serves as a reminder that the Atlantic remains active and that the window for tropical threats is far from closed. ATLANTIC: Tropical Depression Seven Forms

CENTRAL U.S - A trough pushing in from the west has been responsible for severe storms across the High Plains since this weekend. As of Monday, after Sunday's event, North Dakota has set a new record for the year with over 62 tornadoes! Over the next few days, we can see more rounds of severe weather, but hopefully away from North Dakota.Related: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/north-dakota-breaks-yearly-tornado-record">Dakota Tornado Record Falls Over the Weekend</a><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-16 201836-1758075571181.png">The area of greatest concern is centered on North Platte, NE, but could stretch as far north as the arrowhead of Minnesota. Damaging winds and large hail will be the primary concerns, but a few tornadoes remain possible through Wednesday morning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-16 201958-1758075605698.png">Storms will continue to blossom in coverage through the overnight hours.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/09-16 rbnc 00z-1758075644181.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Over the next 5 days, multiple inches of rain will be possible over already saturated grounds. Storms Picking on the High Plains

The dry time has been a little hard to enjoy the last week or two in South Florida. While this is the rainy season, and we're making up for a slow start to it, you can still roll your eyes at what the extended forecasts have looked like recently. In fact, some spots in South Florida have already had their wettest start to September, including Miami.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-16 163631-1758062210080.png">On the other end of the spectrum, some northern Florida spots have really missed out, making it the driest start to September in areas such as Gainesville and Tallahassee.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-16 163641-1758062216443.png">So why? Just because Florida likes to have the most fun? Well, actually, a frontal boundary keeps these storms coming for days. While we've had a couple of days of relief, more moisture is in the forecast for South Florida.That, along with a TON of moisture to work with, is attempting to catch up some drought-stricken areas of the Sunshine State. The Drought Monitor updated on Thursday and had some pretty sizeable improvements in South Florida.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/2025-09-11 09-39-57-1757605257541.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>So while it might be easy to complain about beach plans constantly getting ruined, it has its benefits. Our biggest concern is the lightning threat associated with any Florida thunderstorm, but especially this time of year, with people outdoors. Anytime it rains this heavily, of course, the flash flooding threat will be there as well. Some areas could receive another 3-5 inches before the rain chances start to back off next week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-16 202232-1758075768673.png">

Florida Rainfall: Nuisance or Beneficial?

That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. While the Atlantic has been relatively quiet this season, the Eastern Pacific has been more active, particularly in recent months. Early Saturday morning, Mario dissipated southwest of the Baja Peninsula, only to reemerge Sunday morning as a tropical storm. One other tropical wave has a likely chance of developing over the next week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-15 184318-1757983404971.png"><h1>Monitoring Mario</h1>Mario has once again weakened, upon encountering cooler sea surface temperatures and enhanced shear. It was downgraded to a Tropical Depression Tuesday afternoon, but will likely be a remnant low as it slowly moves northwest into late Tuesday night.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-16 143939-1758055186809.png">Mario is expected to drift WNW, eventually sending some of its moisture into Southern California by mid-to-late week, possibly leading to flooding. Eastern Pacific: Mario Weakens, Sends Moisture to California

Did you see them? Many might have had better things to do this weekend but if you were paying attention to Space Weather, you got a treat! NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center upped the expectation late last night, with some dazzling results.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1967422118729273403" src="https://x.com/NWSSWPC/status/1967422118729273403"></div>The problem for many in the plains was cloud-cover, with evening storms making it difficult to see the lights behind the lightning, but some were lucky to sneak between the clouds.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-15 092335-1757950156965.png">Granted, it might have been difficult to see with the naked eye. Many of the photos we've seen have mentioned a long exposure that was needed to see the fun. Northern Lights Close Out the Weekend For Many

Grab the pumpkin spice and apple cider donuts, fall foliage is started to grace some areas across the United States, with more developing this week! The latest forecast from <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.explorefall.com/fall-foliage-map">Explore Fall</a> (top of page) shows developing color across the Rockies, Cascades, High Sierra, and the Upper-Midwest, near the Canadian border, over the next seven days (September 8th - 14th). Recent wildfire activity in the Sierra may make color there a bit more muted or highly variable between patches of trees. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-08 104753-1757350314424.png">Color has already been showing some for areas in the map above (yellow areas), mostly in the Rockies and Cascades. In fact, we've seen the Bigtooth Maples change quite a bit in the Wasatch Mountains near Salt Lake City!<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1964055938010067402" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1964055938010067402"></div>The most 30 days prior to the appearance of fall color are the most important for vibrancy during the peak season, but drought conditions can also lead to more muted color or variable conditions. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-08 105237-1757350392233.png">For great fall color, sunny days with cool, crisp nights are preferable. Fall Color Starting to Show In Parts of the Lower 48

A strong upper-level trough along with monsoonal moisture advecting northward continues to hone in on Western Colorado, SE Utah, and New Mexico. Both a flood threat and isolated severe thunderstorms will be possible. There are risks for excessive rainfall and flooding over the next few days. The risks are very isolated in the threat of flooding, but it is still something to pay attention to.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/09-14 rsc wpcs-1757878358375.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The Storm Prediction Center has the risk for strong storms stretching from North Dakota to Texas, but here we will discuss the threat for the southern Plains and Texas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-14 133029-1757878277064.png">The latest model data suggest that the heaviest rain will be focused over parts of West Texas and the Central Plains as the disturbance keeps moving east. With upper-level support, some thunderstorms may become organized with a severe threat. Severe Storms Look More Likely This Afternoon

Meaning the upper levels have more influence on the day-to-day weather. When we look at the upper atmosphere, an important shape forms: the Greek letter omega! That will keep the stormy skies nearby and for the East Coast, the cooler weather as well! But what about anyone under the high? Here comes some late Summer heat! Blocking Pattern Warms Up the Midsection

CALIFORNIA - Wildfires in the western U.S. continue to burn, impacting air quality across much of the country. The Garnet Fire, which began in the Sierra National Forest on August 24, 2025, has prompted a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/r05/sierra/alerts/garnet-fire-closure-order">partial forest closure </a>near the fire.According to the Fresno County Sheriff's Department, some evacuation orders are in effect in the area. The fire has now burned over 56,000+ acres and is approximately 15% contained as of Wednesday evening.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/web6-1757599366147.png"><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/2025-09-11 09-48-00-1757598502790.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>As of Thursday morning, the air quality is in the moderate range from the Garnet Fire. From Delaware to Florida, coastal flood alerts have been issued along a large portion of the U.S. East Coast. These are issued for 1-2 feet of inundation, and several factors are at play. A strong high-pressure center over New England and a stationary boundary offshore the southeast coast are going to leave the east coast under persistent onshore winds that are pushing the ocean water onto the beaches.Additionally, beachgoers should exercise caution due to the high risk of rip currents. These strong, fast-moving currents can pull swimmers away from shore.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-10 192356-1757553892007.png">The last full moon, just earlier this week, enhanced high tides, being an additional factor to the widespread coastal alerts.

Coastal Flood Alerts Along the Eastern Seaboard

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

The southern plains has been hounded with storms over the last few days, with flooding being a major issue in central Kansas. Rainfall totals were 4"-10" on Monday into Tuesday. More storms worked through on Tuesday, with localized flooding, hail, and winds being the biggest concerns. Sharon Springs, Kansas saw hailstones of 2.50", this is larger than a golfball! The threat of a few strong severe storms will continue into the overnight hours.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/hail rprpr-1757471419786.png">OVERNIGHT - The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight (level 2 out of 5) risk for severe storms overnight east of the Front Range and into the Plains. Damaging winds and large hail are the primary threats.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/VOVOVOV-1757470390211.png">Although storms will be isolated overnight, some will have the potential to be strong to severe. Severe Threat Overnight For The Plains

MASSACHUSETTS - On Saturday, strong storms in the Northeast produced a tornado. According to the National Weather Service in Boston, a storm survey team confirmed that an EF-1 tornado touched down in Paxton before tracking into Holden, MA. Winds were estimated between 86 and 110 mph. Weekend Tornado Rated EF-1 In Massachussetts

Patrick Crawford has always been a huge weather buff! He grew up in Plano, Texas, and it was there that he experienced what Mother Nature was capable of doing. He would always turn on the television to see what local meteorologists were saying about the weather. That's when he realized he wanted to be a meteorologist.

Patrick graduated from Northern Illinois University (’04) with a degree in Meteorology and a double minor in Mathematics and Geography. Broadcast Meteorology has been great to him and he has been able to work in television markets all across the country. Some of his stops have included New Orleans, Green Bay and even Yuma, Arizona. He is so excited to be part of the WeatherNation team.

He has been awarded the prestigious CBM (Certified Broadcast Meteorologist) weather seal from the American Meteorological Society.

The severe weather risk has been removed from the forecast for the Northeastern U.S.. Areas of the Northeast did see large hail and damaging winds. The heavy rain threat will continue through Sunday across the Northeast and that means a risk for some flash flooding.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/PIC 2-1757210229660.jpg"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/PIC 4-1757210239810.jpg">We currently don't have a severe weather outlook for Sunday, but areas along the coast of North Carolina and Massachusetts (Cape and the Islands) could see a few severe storms early Sunday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/FORECAST-1757204091287.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Rainfall totals could surpass 2-4 inches in a few areas, posing the threat for localized flooding. Storms and Heavy Rain Linger for the Northeast Early Sunday

Lorena's remnant low slowed down, and nearly stalled, over the central Baja Peninsula Friday.
