Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. She stayed in the northeast for her education, graduating Summa Cum Laude from SUNY Oswego with a B.S. in Meteorology. Just a few days after graduation, she made the cross country move to Colorado Springs, CO to begin her career at KKTV, the CBS affiliate. Lucy has covered historic blizzards, tornadoes, windstorms, the largest wildfires in Colorado state history and dust storms ... they truly "get it all" in Colorado! Above - a landslide in Studio City, CA during the February 4-6 Atmospheric River event that hit southern California.The West Coast wet season is coming to a close after another busy winter and early Spring. The Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E) took a look back at the number of atmospheric rivers of the 2023-2024 season starting when the water year began in October.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Slide1-1712842543982.png">An atmospheric river is a concentrated plume of moisture in the mid-levels of the atmosphere that transports large amounts of moisture onshore. When the plume hits the higher elevations of the West Coast the moisture then falls in the form of rain and snow. Atmospheric rivers are responsible for large rain and snow accumulation during the Winter and Spring months and are essential for filling reservoirs on the West Coast.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/2024-04-11 07-55-48-1712843811769.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>A total of 51 Atmospheric Rivers hit the West Coast this year, including two extreme events, one on December 5th along the Washington/Oregon border and another on January 31st in Oregon. Far more were the number of moderate atmospheric rivers that hit up and down the West Coast. This year the vast majority of landfilling ARs were in Washington, Oregon, and northern California, in part because of an ENSO neutral pattern where the Pacific Jet is typically aligned with the Northwest.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/ENOS-1712844476092.jpg">Though 2023-2024 had 13 more atmospheric rivers than the impactful 2022-23 season, this year brought a smaller number of extreme AR events and fewer to southern and central California (due to the jet stream track mentioned above). The 2022-23 season's few numbers of extreme AR events mean the state of California was at 200% of the average for precipitation. The 2023-24 season, though characterized by fewer strong and extreme events had plenty of weak ARs to leave the states at or slightly above precipitation for the winter months.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/AR scla-1712844476095.jpg">So what does this mean for California's all important reservoirs? At last update, reservoirs are at 117% of average state-wide thanks to slightly above average rainfall this winter and snowpack sitting at 111% of average state-wide. For the most up to date conditions on reservoirs and snowpack, you can visit California's <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cww.water.ca.gov/">tracking page here</a>. There is concern for ground water supply, especially in the central valley where soil moisture is dry as of mid-April. Snowmelt in the Spring should help to boost those levels. According to the CW3E, "The strongest atmospheric river to impact Central and Southern California occurred on February 4-6 ... Downtown Los Angeles received 8.51 inches of rain, which was the second wettest 3-day stretch on record. This event was a great example how only a few strong storms over Southern California can make or break a water year." The heavy rain caused <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/major-flood-event-expected-in-california">numerous water rescues</a> around the city of L.A. with tornado warnings just east of San Diego. Mudslides and debris flow around the L.A. suburbs also closed roadways and created damage for neighborhoods. In the mountains, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/heavy-snow-in-california">impressive snowfall</a> came down in the Sierra Nevada!<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1754995886403518971" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1754995886403518971"></div>Another notable atmospheric river event was in early December 2023, when an extreme AR hit Oregon and Washington state. First ... Solar eclipses only happen during a new moon when the moon and sun are on the same side of the Earth.&nbsp;Second ... The Moon's orbit around the Earth is a bit tilted meaning its shadow doesn’t always line up with Earth. For a total solar eclipse to happen, the Earth, Sun, and Moon need to be in a straight line with the moon placed directly between the Earth and Sun which happens only twice a year.&nbsp;&nbsp;Even though the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun, its closer position to the Earth allows it to block out the sun when everything aligns.&nbsp;&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/setup1-1711639803722.jpg">Depending on the position of the moon, totality can vary in length. This year we will be dark for an average of 3 ½ to 4 minutes. They are rippling waves of light and darkness that give a “movie-esq” effect.</li><li>No matter where you're watching from in the U.S., all of us will see some level of eclipse coverage. Instead of looking, up, turn your gaze down, and you’ll see tiny crescent shadows on the ground! Eclipses have been around since the beginning of time, and so have the legends that go along with them. We are bringing you some of the stories and cultural significance of total solar eclipses around the world in this WeatherNation web exclusive.In Ancient China, eclipses were believed to be a dragon trying to eat the sun, and people needed to make as much noise as possible to scare it off.&nbsp;The Chinese would bang pots and pans to try and scare the dragon away.For West African tribes, the Batammaliba people in Togo and Benin, the cosmic event is the result of the sun and moon fighting and trying to resolve their differences. They believed it meant that communities on Earth should come together and resolve their conflicts too.&nbsp;Indigenous tribes across North America have their eclipse traditions as well. Web Exclusive: How Global Cultures Interpret the Eclipse

Kit grew up in the Piedmont of North Carolina outside of Charlotte, spending most of his childhood in Belmont, an old mill town on the Catawba River now grown into a bustling suburb. He had a passion for mathematics and science through grade school, having ambitions to become an architect, engineer, theoretical/astrophysicist, or geologist, but eventually choosing to pursue Meteorology. He went to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to obtain his degree, taking all electives on atmospheric sensing, tropical, and mesoscale meteorology for a full, in-depth understanding of the atmosphere (though he maintains on every hike, he should have taken more geology classes!) He interned at WCNC in Charlotte, learning the craft of presenting off-script and how to tell a weather story. After Graduation, he worked in the Quad Cities at WHBF-TV and KLJB-TV, the CBS/Fox affiliates. From there, he moved to Grand Island, Nebraska at KSNB-TV, the NBC affiliate for Central Nebraska. The active winters and severe seasons kept him busy, experiencing a wide range of wild weather. He remembers the most impactful event in March of 2019, when a massive snowmelt, heavy rain, and blizzard all struck the state in 36 hours. Kit later moved to the Denver area taking a job as a Producer with WeatherNation. At 10:23am EDT Friday morning, residents in New Jersey felt some moderate shaking of the earth beneath them. A M4.8 Earthquake struck, with an epicenter in Northeast Hunterdon County, about 8 miles northwest of Bridgewater.<img src="https://earthquake.usgs.gov/realtime/product/dyfi/us7000ma74/us/1712331453719/us7000ma74_ciim_geo.jpg" alt="DYFI intensity map">Light to moderate shaking was reported to the USGS near the epicenter and in New York City, with very weak shaking as far as Baltimore, MD, Harrisburg, PA, and Springfield, MA.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/SOT_040524_TRT 0.26_RNE_LEHIGH VALLEY, PA_ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE VIDEO OF THIS GUY SAYING IT'S GONNA BE A NICE DAY THEN FREAKS OUT ABOUT EARTHQUAKE. CURSING REMOVED_SF_RICHARD SNYDER_NC_E040524-1712336556497.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Later in the afternoon Friday, an aftershock earthquake occurred in the same location and caused more shaking. The aftershock was a little weaker, but still registered a 3.8.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Earthquake-1712370819822.jpg">Earthquakes are not unheard of in this part of the country. In the 18th and 19th centuries, New York City has sustained damage from earthquakes. East Coast damaging quakes come out to a rough average of twice per century. In August of 2011, a M5.8 earthquake struck Northern Virginia, causing shaking from Georgia to New England, and even some minor shaking as far west as Chicago!East Coast earthquakes are less frequent than on the West Coast, but they can be felt much farther away due to the differences in the rock composition. According to the USGS, "a magnitude 4.0 eastern U.S. earthquake typically can be felt at many places as far as 100 km (60 mi) from where it occurred."<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/VO_040524_RNE_MORRISTOWN, NJ_RING CAMERA CATCHES SHAKING FROM EARTHQUAKE_STORYFUL_JEREMY GODWIN_KW_E040524-1712336577279.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>There is still a chance for aftershocks, which are smaller quakes occurring after an initial shock. Statistically speaking, there is a 50% chance of another quake of magnitude 4.0, though that statistic is mainly used for larger earthquakes so aftershocks are more likely to be much weaker. UPDATE: At 3:59pm EDT, a M4.0 quake did occur, less than two miles east of the original quake.If there are any further quakes, follow these tips to remain safe!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Earthquake Safety Tips-1712336479899.png">On the other side of the world, a much larger earthquake hit Taiwan on Wednesday, a Magnitude 7.4. Earthquake Jostles New Jersey

Colorado State University has released its outlook for the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, calling for an above-average season for named storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes. CSU Forecasters, under the leadership of Hurricane Researcher Phil Klotzbach, attribute the above-average forecast to the La Niña conditions expected in the equatorial Pacific Ocean and warmer than average sea surface temperatures in addition to activity from the West African Monsoon. CSU uses "analog" years, or reference years that show similar characteristics to this one; 2024's reference years are 1878, 1926, 1998, 2010, and 2020, all above average years. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/PKG_040324_TRT 3.50_CSU HURRICANE SEASON FORECAST_ROB BRADLEY_NJ_040324-1712238044793.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1 every year, with the Eastern Pacific Hurricane season beginning on May 15. The National Hurricane Center begins issuing tropical outlooks for both basins on May 15. The first name on the list in the Atlantic is Alberto, followed by Beryl. CSU forecasters call for 23 named storms, but the official list only has 21 names. In the past, the National Hurricane Center would revert to the Greek Alphabet, but following confusion in the 2020 season. Now, there is an alternative list of names that span the alphabet again with the first three of Adria, Braylen, and Caridad.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/names-1712236967550.jpg">A La Niña is characterized by cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, which interacts with the atmosphere to produce less shear over the tropical Atlantic. Less shear means storms don't get "pulled apart" and have a better chance of surviving in the Atlantic Ocean. The last time we were in La Niña was in 2022, a hurricane season that was above average.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/la nina outlook-1712236967549.jpg">The 2023 season was influenced by El Niño conditions which typically suppress hurricane season, but warmer than average sea surface temperatures balanced out the influence to give us a generally, average season in 2023.Sea surface temperatures are also a huge factor in this year's forecast. Warm ocean waters help to develop thunderstorms that then congeal into hurricanes. Climatologically, sea surface temps are at their warmest in September, when there are peaks of energy off of the coast of Africa.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/2024-04-04 07-19-57-1712237500749.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Remember, these are just outlooks and Klotzbach says, "it's important to realize that, you know, this is our first forecast. Historically, the skill is modest just because we're still quite a ways from the events we're trying to predict. Hurricane season doesn't really ramp up historically until August. So we still have a few months to go before the season really ramps up. Atlantic Hurricane Season 2024: Expected to be Well Above Average

A strong 7.4 magnitude earthquake shook the country of Taiwan early Wednesday morning, close to 8:00 local time (8 PM Tuesday night for the U.S. East Coast). Multiple casualties have been reported with hundreds injured. Dozens of buildings collapsed as the city shook.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/VON_040424_INTL_HUALIEN,TAIWAN_HOTEL SHOWING IMMENSE DAMAGE AFTER POWERFUL EARTHQUAKE_STORYFUL_DO_E040324-1712147940483.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The earthquake was located about 10 miles off Hualian on Taiwan's east coast and was about 20 miles deep. The quake even prompted evacuation advisories around Okinawa from the Japan Meteorological Agency, which they later lifted. Powerful Earthquake in Rocks Taiwan

Severe storms slammed the Midwest and Mid-South on Tuesday, producing widespread wind, hail, and tornadoes. The tornado surveys will be coming in the next few days as National Weather Service officials are able to determine the damage. Some of the more notable storm cells and tornado warnings from Tuesday that we will monitor include Charleston, WV, Louisville, KY, Lexington, KY and Sunbright TN. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1775225434520563737" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1775225434520563737"></div>On Tuesday morning, this student was caught in a storm and was completely knocked off their feet at the University of Kentucky. Tornadoes Rip through Midwest Tuesday

The severe weather threat continues today as it moves to the east. This article has all the information on the risk today and tomorrow: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/midwest-at-risk-of-tornadoes-hail-this-week">Storms Shift into the Midwest.</a>The central and southern U.S. were pummeled by storms on Monday. Briar, TX, which is about 25 miles northwest of Fort Worth, TX, saw grapefruit-sized hail! That's about 4.5" in diameter! Even portions of Kansas dealt with baseball-sized hail.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/hail-1712056388862.png">Sights like this one were a familiar one across a handful of states. This video came out of Cole County, MO where a variety of hailstone sizes were seen from a severe thunderstorm warning. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1774981033563209765" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1774981033563209765"></div>We had multiple severe storm reports, with hail and wind being the most common ones across the board. Towards the border of Oklahoma, there were a few possible tornadoes reported during the afternoon.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/storm reports-1712061732947.jpg">This video came out of Kingfisher, OK on Monday as a funnel cloud tried to touch down from a supercell.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1774965974632223168" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1774965974632223168"></div>The strong, damaging winds were another major component of these storms. Grapefruit Hail Pummels Plains, Midwest

The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/">Space Weather Prediction Center</a> has issued a Geomagnetic Storm Watch through March 25, 2024 while observing SEVERE G4 geomagnetic storming. The forecast expects the G4 status to remain through the first half of March 25th.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/geomagnetic storm forecast tonight-1711298117667.png">So what does this mean? According to the SWPC, when conditions reach SEVERE G4 storm could lead to satellite tracking issues and power voltage problems. These are issues that the general public may not have to worry about, but the appropriate companies that this may affect have likely been notified directly by the SWPC.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/Screenshot 2024-03-24 155204-1711317196416.png">This geomagnetic storm continues due to the response of a coronal mass ejection (CME) that was originally observed late March 22, sending small particles Earth's way. Those particles interact with our atmosphere, leading to the jaw-dropping show. The best of that show looks to be late Sunday night through Monday. With G3 to G4 geomagnetic storming, the Aurora can be visible slightly further south tonight.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/auroro-1711330355933.png">However, a potent low-pressure system will be in the way of many folks in the Northern High Plains. Cloud cover will make it impossible for many to see the Northern Lights.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/03-24 clouds-1711330436945.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>

Geomagnetic Storm Watch Issued - Aurora Borealis Visible Farther South

It is officially spring, and signs of the season are here! This includes the official spring outlook released by forecasters at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center and the National Water Center.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/PKG_032124_TRT 1.34_NOAA 2024 SPRING OUTLOOK_ROB BRADLEY_BH_032124-1711047495380.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>For many, it has already felt like spring thanks to the warmest winter on record for the contiguous United States. The official forecast&nbsp;shows a continuation of that pattern with much of the country expecting warmer than average temperatures into the summer months. There is higher confidence&nbsp;in the Pacific Northwest and Great Lakes.&nbsp;After the winter season was the third wettest on average for the U.S., wetter conditions will continue into the spring for the Southeast, Central Plains, and Mid-Atlantic. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/Screenshot 2024-03-21 084532-1711032567992.png">West Texas and New Mexico should be on the lookout for drier-than-average conditions, potentially leading to worsening drought.&nbsp;The Pacific Northwest also has a better chance of seeing below-average precipitation.Because of the warm winter, there is hardly any snowpack coverage, meaning persistent or worsening drought in the High Plains and Great Lakes. The continued wet pattern for the central U.S. should continue the pattern of drought improvement in the Mississippi and Missouri Valley states.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/Screenshot 2024-03-21 084610-1711032567989.png">The potential for significant Spring flooding is low due to winter warmth and limited snowpack. However, flood-prone areas of the Midwest and South should still be on the lookout for minor to moderate flooding.<blockquote>“This is the first Spring Outlook since 2021 with no population expected to be impacted by major flooding. Of growing concern will be the potentially low flows on the Mississippi River this summer into fall due to well-below snowpack and precipitation in most of the Northern Plains and Midwest. However, a transition to ENSO-neutral conditions is expected by the summer. NOAA Spring Outlook: Warm for All, Wet for Southeast

The World Meteorological Society [WMO] has officially announced the retirement of two hurricane names in the Eastern Pacific from the 2023 season. The two names are Otis and Dora. Otilio and Debora will replace them. For the first time since 2014, the WMO has NOT retired a name from the Atlantic Hurricane list of names. According to the WMO, "the names are repeated every six years unless a storm is so deadly that its name is retired."<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1770499781716037712" src="https://twitter.com/WMO/status/1770499781716037712"></div><h2>Otis</h2>The catastrophic storm, Hurricane Otis, was retired "because of the death and destruction it caused when it made landfall in the Mexican resort city of Acapulco in October 2023" according to the WMO. The storm underwent rapid intensification, strengthening from a tropical storm with sustained winds of 50 mph to a major category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 160 mph less than 24 hours later. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/otis 2-1710956187218.jpg">The hurricane was responsible for one of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/hurricane-otis-produced-one-of-the-strongest-wind-gusts-ever-recorded-over-200-mph">strongest wind gusts ever</a> recorded on Earth - over 200 mph. This hit the tourist town of Aculpulco and due to the rapid intensification, people had little time to evacuate. Sadly, 54 people died with 34 people missing.<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ulcO3heFpDQ?si=pAR9mP-hRJhU_Q8n" start="0"></iframe></div><h2>Dora</h2>The name "Dora" was retired "not because of direct damage, but because of sensitivities to the name Dora and the indirect meteorological role it played in the devastating wildfires in Maui, Hawaii, in August 2023." The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/deadly-brush-fires-in-hawaii#google_vignette">fires in Hawaii</a> were responsible for 101 deaths at last update from the Maui Police DepartmentWhile Dora did not come anywhere close to Hawaii (over 400 miles to the South), the pressure gradient created from the Category 4 hurricane storm and a ridge of high pressure to the north of the island contributed to widespread winds of 80+ mph. Dora was a long-lived storm, crossing the eastern and central Pacific, eventually crossing the "International Dateline, becoming a typhoon, before it weakened and reached the western portion of the Pacific."<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zYV-OgHHd1Y" start="0"></iframe></div>The World Meteorological Society is responsible for developing the names for tropical systems, and as mentioned above, the list rotates every 6 years. The next time the names from the 2023 season will be used again is 2029. Hurricane season in the Eastern Pacific starts on May 15th and in the Atlantic Basin on June 1. The National Hurricane Center [NHC] has issued a few changes for the 2024 season, including how the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/national-hurricane-center-to-change-the-cone-of-uncertainty-in-2024">cone of uncertainty is displayed</a>.Stay with WeatherNation as we get closer to the start of Hurricane Season for details on the official forecast and conditions.

Hurricane Names Retired After the 2023 Season

This cabin on Spencer Glacier is buried up to the roofline, which is 9 feet tall. You can see a large pile of snow on top of the cabin too! Spencer Glacier is located roughly 60 miles South of Anchorage and during the summer is a place for hiking and camping, and snowmobiling in the winter months (which is how this remote cabin was reached).<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/VON_031824_RAH_SPENCER GLACIER, AK_'CUTE LITTLE CABIN. We understand this is Alaska. In the wintertime they get snow, but this year has been different: since June 1, 2023, Anchorage has seen 123.4" of snowfall, 165% more than typical season totals of roughly 75". The snowiest winter ever on record for Anchorage was in 2011-2012 with over 134" (10+ feet) for the season. This year is on track to be the fourth snowiest winter on record for the city.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/snowiest winters-1710861185970.jpg">There is still time for the seasonal snowfall number to climb as the snow season runs through the Spring. Regardless if Anchorage can score another 10" of snow before the season is done, the 2023-24 winter will be one to remember!
