Wildfire Danger: Extreme Conditions

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

CALIFORNIA - The state of California has been impacted by our first frontal boundary that prompted severe warnings, flash flood warnings, heavy mountain snow, and gusty winds. Snowfall totals could surpass 4-5 feet in some areas, like Mammoth Mountain. Resorts around Lake Tahoe could also see 4-5 feet, including I-80 and the Donner Pass. The heavy snowfall rates will make mountain travel impossible at times.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-17 165313-1771372403749.png">Even the mountains in Southern California will see heavy snowfall developing this afternoon and evening. More record high temperatures were broken across the northern U.S. on Tuesday. Some highs hit nearly 80° in Nebraska.The ridge of high pressure will continue to push east, bringing the heat east through the week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-17 161437-1771370084805.png">More record high temperatures will be possible through Friday as the heat builds east.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-17 161528-1771370135856.png">Temperatures to the south will push towards the 80s on Wednesday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-17 161658-1771370241504.png">The warmest temperatures this week will be Thursday across the Southeast.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-17 161645-1771370276312.png">The southern Plains will also be feeling the anomalous warmth, helping to increase the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/active-weather-weekend-ahead">severe weather threat</a> there over the next couple of days. Confidence is very high in spring-like warmth sticking around as we head deeper into February. The West Coast is hogging the active weather in the early part of the week, but it won't last forever. A wave moving onshore in the coming days will turn into another chance for severe storms later this week. But these could look a little different...<h1>SETUP</h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-16 103300-1771263199965.png">The disturbance in question will ripple through the Rocky Mountains, emerging sometime Thursday. That's not the issue-the chunk of energy is more than enough to cause trouble. Let's look at the other ingredients<h1>Moisture &amp; Instability</h1>As the system presses in from the west, a front will drive through some dew points well into the 50's and some 60's. That should be plenty of moisture to work with. That will provide ample unstable air to power severe chances.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-16 103446-1771263317488.png">So if it's all systems go, why are some models struggling to pop storms? Check out the latest run of our in-house model, which is hesitant to develop storms.<hr><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/02172-1771369980040.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>So what gives? Low-topped supercells are the biggest worry if storms manage to form. Those are storms that don't reach quite as high in the atmosphere, but still contain the ability to rotate. What happens in the evening is a little less certain-do we have enough thunderstorms to merge into a line? Next Shot at Severe Storms This Week

ROCKIES - Widespread winter alerts remain in place across the four corners for additional snowfall for the region. Some parts of Utah and Colorado have already seen over half a foot of snowfall. More is on the way.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-17 202558-1771385178757.png">On and off rain and snow showers are expected to continue through much of the week, dropping feet of snow for some areas in the Rockies.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/0217-1771369170131.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Snowfall totals could reach 1 to 3 feet in the higher elevations through Thursday morning. Storms flew through Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi this weekend. Leaving behind strong damaging winds and tornadoes. Two reports have been confirmed out of Mississippi from Sunday, both rating EF-1.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-15 160500-1771196706661.png">Strong and severe storms have developed across the south and will continue through tonight. The threat continues across portions of Florida and Georgia. Severe Storms Target the South Sunday

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

NORTHEAST - As this next clipper system continues through, we can see snow and some lake-effect snow. A high-pressure system will move in, and things will taper off on Thursday night.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/02-11_rne-1770838643023.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>When all is said and done, the heaviest snow ends up in upstate New York and most of the New England area. With a few of these lake effect bands cranking well into late week, we can see some totals top out at 6"!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-11 123841-1770838732760.png">But what about those temps after the fact? Well, judging by the Climate Prediction Center's (CPC) 6-10 day outlook, we're likely to continue with these above-average temperatures even after Valentine's Day weekend. Lingering Snow in the Northeast

It was another cold morning on Monday across the Northeast. Many cities across the Northeast hit below zero for the air temperature! Dubois, PA broke its record low temperature for the morning, getting down to -9°.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 081947-1770650390845.png">There will be some improvement with overnight lows getting closer to seasonal by midweek.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 174938-1770684583296.png"><h1>Where does this year's cold rank?</h1>While it has been a cold winter, many colder winters have occurred in the history of weather observations in the Eastern U.S. Most of these areas have weather data dating back to the 1800s, so ranking in the bottom half or even bottom quarter is still impressive.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-06 094753-1770397848980.png">As we look ahead, temperatures will remain below average. Cold Air Remains Across the Northeast

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. It was a hot day on Monday, February 9th in the Central Plains with many locations breaking record high temperatures for this date in time. Some of these locations include spots like Sioux City, Iowa, which not only broke a daily record high, but they also had their warmest temperatures this early in the year.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 174203-1770684273700.png">Temperatures are expected to drop on Tuesday but they'll still be above-average across the northern Plains.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 135952-1770671000646.png">The warming temperatures will mean impacts from melting snow and ice, particularly where ice jams become a hazard. A flood watch remains in effect for eastern Nebraska for ice jam flood potential.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 140356-1770671044246.png">Another side-effect of the warmer weather is wildfire concerns. As winds kick up to 20-30 mph, areas of eastern New Mexico and the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas need to be mindful of grass fire ignitions. Anything that gets going could spread quickly, as dry as this area has been recently. The championship of the National Football League is set to be decided this Sunday. The Seattle Seahawks will face the New England Patriots for the right to claim the title at 3:30 PM PT Sunday. But will the weather have a say in who is hoisting the trophy at the end of it?Weather conditions look favorable for the big game this weekend, especially for an outdoor event in early February. Forecasts point to a mild and comfortable setup, with temperatures expected to settle into the upper 50s to near 60 degrees around kickoff. While it may cool slightly as the evening goes on, conditions should remain pleasant enough for fans in the stands with a light jacket.&nbsp;<h3>PATTERN BREAKING DOWN</h3><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/web4-1770549373360.png">Skies are expected to feature a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day, with cloud cover increasing later in the afternoon and evening. A marine influence could allow for some low clouds or patchy fog nearby, but widespread visibility issues or major weather disruptions are not anticipated at this time. Any moisture in the area appears limited, keeping the chance for rain low during game time.&nbsp;If you plan on attending any of the pregame festivities this week before the game kicks off, no issues at all either.Winds are also forecast to stay relatively light, which is good news for both players and spectators. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

Snow blew through much of the Northeastern United States on Friday, dropping between 1-6 inches from Indiana to Virginia. As the low pressure system slowly exits New England on Saturday, additional snow is expected to pile up. Some locations in Massachusetts already picked up near a foot of snow with several more inches expected by sunset.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1770493198909.png">While most winter weather alerts already expired Saturday morning, alerts in New England will last through tonight, including the winter storm warning for areas like Gloucester. Heavy Snow Lingers in New England Saturday

Following a surge of wet storm systems in December and early January, snowpack in the Sierra Nevada mountains has shrunk considerably. The Department of Water Resources (DWR) conducted a snow survey on Friday, January 30th, to assess current conditions and discuss impacts. Snowpack was determined to be 55 percent of normal, down from 89 percent in early January, which has since dropped further. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.youtube.com/live/5cyXPAy4Cac">Click here</a> to watch the survey report.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-04 113103-1770236816380.png">California and much of the West have been under the influence of a massive blocking ridge of high pressure. This has kept storms charging to the north into Canada before descending across the Midwest and Eastern United States, which has been under siege from cold and snowy systems.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-05 154857-1770331744830.png"> The lack of January storms has left an abysmal snowpack across the Western United States, with record low numbers at many of the monitoring stations in the mountains. It hasn't just been a lack of storms, but also warm weather, which has led to high elevation snow and low elevation rain or melting.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-04 171742-1770250669542.png">The good news is that California has had three wet winter seasons preceding this year, which have left reservoirs with plenty of water. About 30 percent of the state's drinking water comes from the snowpack.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-05 154642-1770331615239.png"> While the short-term looks mostly dry for the west, above-average precipitation is favored in the medium-range forecast as the jet stream pattern could flip around the middle of the month. While full recovery of the snowpack across the entire west is unlikely, several moisture-packed storm systems could greatly benefit the region.

California Snow Pack Drops After Dry January

Following a historic winter storm last weekend, another round of wintry weather moved across the Carolinas earlier on Thursday morning. Perhaps the biggest impact from the front will be another round of cold temperatures, which will further delay snowmelt across the region and continue to impact people in Mississippi, who have been without power for nearly two weeks following an ice storm.<h1>Carolina Snow and Ice:</h1>Although the snow and ice threat diminished earlier this evening, isolated slick spots will still be around through the morning on Friday. Here is a look at some of the snowfall that took place this morning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/PIC 2-1770309464464.jpg"><h1>South Cold</h1>Another round of frigid temperatures will follow the front. Cold weather advisories have been issued for wind chills down into the low 20s on Friday morning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1770322297809.png">Overnight and through Friday morning, freeze warnings have been issued for Florida and southern Georgia. Another Cold Night for Residents of the Southeast

While it has now been about a week since a major ice storm swept across the southern tier of the country, over a hundred thousand customers remain without power, the majority across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. While temperatures warmed some, it's been a cold week for people to be without power, creating dangerous conditions for those without heat.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-03 115640-1770145007230.png">Customers without power are beginning to improve as temperatures climb.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-03 115635-1770145012216.png">Low temperatures will begin to rebound, more noticeably, by midweek. However, with another system bringing even more cool air, temps plummet right back down into the high 20s!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-03 084341-1770133432445.png">Will continue to update this story on Weather Nation, including your Southeast Regional Forecast, every 10 past the hour.

Thousands of Customers Still Remain Without Power

While the snow has ended, the slippery travel hasn't.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="2017796406862614965" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/2017796406862614965?s=20"></div>This comes after some locations in the Carolinas have seen historic snow totals, comparable with some of the heaviest snows in recent history. In addition to heavy snow, this low brought strong winds to the East Coast, coastal flooding, and has pulled arctic air all the way to South Florida. Miami and West Palm Beach are a couple of the FL cities that broke record lows on Sunday AM.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-01 105502-1769968516931.png">Totals in some North Carolina cities exceeded 20"!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-01 160422-1769987074148.png">Sunshine's helping start the melting process. However, anything that might melt during the day will likely refreeze during the overnights. Leaving slick roads for the morning commute. Wednesday morning lows and road temperatures will continue to see improvements, this will help some of that snow and ice begin to melt and stay melted.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-03 084546-1770133570185.png">Temperatures will climb into the 40's by the middle of the week, which should help get any of the leftover snow to clear out.
