Heavy rain, snow, and gusty winds continue to move through the Golden State as a strong trough digs south from Canada to start the work week. Rainfall totals of up to 5 inches have already fallen in portions of California. Expect impacts to travel in higher terrain, especially over I-80 and CA SR 50 on either side of Lake Tahoe. Over a foot of snow could fall on these corridors.<h1>Forecast</h1>Scattered rain and snow showers continue across California. We have seen flash flooding, severe storms, heavy rain, and heavy snow. Conditions are expected to improve by Wednesday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/10-13 west vans3k-1760407474437.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Rainfall totals appear impressive for an October storm system in California, considering it's a bit early in the season for such heavy precipitation. Pockets of 1-3 inches of rain are expected, with isolated totals approaching 5".<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web6-1760442203677.png"><h1>Snowfall</h1>Snow totals are expected to top a foot or even two feet in the high Sierra, while areas around the Donner Pass can expect 6-12 inches at the summit. Be sure to carry chains and use them once the requirement is put into effect. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web4-1760442028168.png">Winter Storm Warnings (Pink) and Winter Weather Advisories (Purple) have been issued for the Sierra Nevada, including South Lake Tahoe and Mammoth Lakes, with treacherous travel expected.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web5-1760442053474.png">This will be the first storm this season for the Sierra Nevada. Make sure you are prepared for winter driving across the passes! Heavy bursts of snow are likely at times in the Central Sierra.<h1>Severe Threat</h1>With such a potent trough ushering in the cold air to fire up snow, it will also help organize storms in the lower elevations. Which means the threat of a few severe storms will move in as the storms do tonight. For areas closer to Los Angeles, it could be after midnight before storms push in.<h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-13 100505-1760371875330.png">Rain &amp; Flooding</h1>Heavy rain is another worry with recently burned scarred land in California.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-14 070827-1760447320272.png">Flash flooding and debris flows will be possible through Tuesday. California: Flooding Rain, Heavy Snow, Isolated Tornadoes

Flash flooding will continue to be possible in the southwestern United States over the next couple of days. Be sure to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://msc.fema.gov/portal/home">check your property's flood zone</a> and have a plan to seek higher ground if necessary. NEVER drive through flood waters if you cannot easily see the water's depth or the road below it. Multiple water rescues have been needed over the past few days. Remember, you're not only risking your life but the lives of the first responders if you drive into flooded roads.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1978098719095406800" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1978098719095406800"></div> The remnant moisture from the two most recent tropical systems in the Eastern Pacific, Priscilla and Raymond, led to heavy showers and thunderstorms over a wide range of terrain throughout the weekend. and now a trough out west and a ridge out east are helping to funnel moisture into New Mexico and Colorado. Several inches of rain are expected across the Four Corners with isolated heavier totals.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web2-1760441716389.png">In addition to the flood threat, severe storms are possible through Wednesday as the trough moving through the northern Rockies increases wind shear farther south. Damaging wind gusts have been a problem already this week, with places like Tempe clocking 71 mph winds from a microburst.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web3-1760441806773.png">We have seen heavy rain and flooding with these storms, and that threat will continue over the next few days. Flooding Concern Continues in the Southwest

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. NORTHWEST - After winter weather alerts were issued last week in the northwest, and snow totals topped out at 25", another round of potential snowfall is in store for the northwest.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-14 105450-1760460901439.png">This next round will be much more scattered in nature and may take a day or so to really accumulate on the mountain peaks. Currently ,there are no winter weather alerts in place for the Rockies, but rain and snow are certainly in the forecast.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/10-13 rnw bams-1760407820926.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>From now through Friday, rain totals may reach an inch and snowfall totals may surpass half a foot, especially in the Tetons, northern Rockies, and Bitteroots.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web1-1760441588494.png">For more details on how this may impact temperatures, be sure to join us at :50 past the hour on TV for your west regional forecast.

Another Round of Snow for the Rockies

A low-pressure system that has tracked up the East Coast continues to bring threats of coastal flooding, heavy rainfall, and strong winds. While this system has not developed, and is not expected to develop, any tropical characteristics, it’s behaving much like an early-season Nor’easter, delivering similar impacts minus the cold and snow. Areas along the shores of North Carolina to New England were impacted by this system.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1977894622975430882" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1977894622975430882"></div>The system is expected to move away from the coast through Tuesday but New Jersey still had a handful of strong wind reports on Monday. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web 14-1760436387824.png"><h2>Rainfall</h2>Heavy rain was very localized from this system, and will be far and few especially as it moves away from the East Coast. But a few daily rainfall records were still broken on Monday. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web 13-1760436496566.png">A few scattered rain showers still remain possible.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/10-13 east-1760408242196.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Coastal flood alerts have been slowly ending for much of the Atlantic Coast. Sea water flooding during high tides could still approach 2-3 feet of inundation in some areas (warning areas in dark green).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web 12-1760436278168.png">The major flood stage is expected to be reached around the southern Chesapeake, mostly during high tides. October Nor'easter Wrapping Up For the Atlantic

The 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season has thus far been dominated by strong hurricanes, curving away from the United States with a few close calls/impacts from weaker systems. Don't let your guard down! October and even November can still churn out strong storms in the Gulf and Caribbean. That being said, we have another storm that will be picking on the fish in the Atlantic. Tropical Storm Lorenzo formed Monday morning and will stay well out to sea. About the only meteorologically significant nugget with Lorenzo is whether it will reach hurricane strength.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web 11-1760435117836.png">The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) has outlined a few regions with chances for tropical development through the middle/end of October.<h2><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-10 045254-1760093597412.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-10 045309-1760093605441.png">EASTERN PACIFIC</h2>The more active basin is still going. Another area of development is being monitored by the National Hurricane Center, but nothing is expected to form in the next few days.
