Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

<h1>Tropical Storm Erin</h1>Tropical Storm Erin was announced Monday morning by the National Hurricane Center.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1954950945181405214" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1954950945181405214"></div>A well-defined area of low pressure is now moving west of the Cabo Verde Islands. With winds up to 45 mph, the National Hurricane Center has named this system Tropical Storm Erin. Erin should expect modest intensity growth through midweek as it quickly moves west across the Atlantic. Right now, the cone of uncertainty has Erin increasing to a Category 2 hurricane by this weekend.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/rtdss-1755031047530.png">Forecast FactorsThe ridge of high pressure over the Atlantic will be a big influence on Erin's path forward.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-12 080107-1755007275941.png">Models keep the center of circulation strong on this system despite the dry air, though it may be more of a struggle than the model below depicts (GFS). Erin Forecast to Become a Hurricane

The long-range temperature trend towards the end of August shows higher confidence that temperatures will remain above average. Even this week, temperatures are feeling the summertime heat.<h2>West Coast</h2>Widespread heat alerts are in place for the Pacific Northwest through Northern California. Temperatures will remain 10-15° above average over the next few days.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/nw eattt-1755031342891.png">We will see temps shift in the Northwest, and by the weekend, much cooler air will be in place. Spokane will see a high of 95° on Wednesday, but by friday will see a high of 78°. It's been a hot and dry stretch in the West. Basically anytime the winds have kicked up, the wildfire risk has followed suit. After just about a month of fire weather concerns, numerous fires have erupted and continue to burn.<h1>GIFFORD FIRE</h1>Burning as California's largest wildfire in 2025, the Gifford Fire has torched over 122k acres. The good news has been the containment numbers in recent days. As of Tuesday PM, the air quality index is showing good for most folks, with some seeing between good and sensitive. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/tuesday pm-1755031201893.png"><h1>DRAGON BRAVO FIRE</h1>One of the largest fires in Arizona history, the Dragon Bravo Fire, has continued to smolder along the Northern Rim of the Grand Canyon. It has burned more than 140,000 acres, making it the 7th largest in state history.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1953931727044223408" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1953931727044223408"></div>Another fire that has cropped up in the last few days was the Billy Fire which is burning northeast of Phoenix. A trough will push a cold front through part of the West Coast. That front will kick up winds, AND turn them out of the west. Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

Get a blanket and find some dark skies! One of the most prolific meteor showers of the year will peak during the upcoming week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/TOMER PERSEID-1754872084317.jpg">The Perseid Meteor Shower typically reaches a peak during the second week of August as the Earth moves through the debris field left by Comet Swift-Tuttle, which makes a trip through the solar system once every 133 years, last visiting the inner-solar system in 1992. Debris left by the comet dives through the Earth's atmosphere to create the beautiful meteor shower we expect. 2025 isn't expected to be the best year to see the meteors, unfortunately, as the waning gibbous moon will rise in the evening, washing out any faint meteors that may have been seen under a new moon. Ideal conditions can produce 50-100 meteors per hour, but with the brightness from the moon, expect 20-50 under dark skies away from city lights.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-10 052401-1754829026071.png"><h2>A Pair of Planets</h2>Another fun astronomical event will be gracing the morning skies through much of this week - the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/TOMER PERSIED 2-1754872142561.jpg">These planets will appear to be right next to each other in the morning sky, even through they're still millions of miles apart! Flash flooding continues to hit the Southeast hard - especially Florida. A trough of low pressure is still spinning in parts of the southeast, keeping the rain chances nearby. A stationary storm sat and rained over the same spot, on Sanibel Island, for much of Sunday morning (8/10). That efficient tropical rain added up to over a foot of rain by the time the weekend was done. Florida is normally a tad more resilient to fresh water flooding, but nowhere can handle that much rain. Over a Foot of Rain Falls in Southwest Florida

A Marginal threat for strong and severe storms is in place across the plains through Monday night into early Tuesday. Strong Storms Across the Plains Monday night

Almost a foot of rain fell in a short amount of time in southeast Wisconsin. Saturday night into Sunday morning, some areas neighboring Milwaukee saw 5-8 inches of rain, with some localized spots surpassing 9 inches!<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1954656501143920718" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1954656501143920718"></div>That was complicated by another round of rain on Sunday, but thankfully that round was just far enough west to avoid a repeat incident. By the time the rain came to an end on Sunday, some areas were pushing a FOOT of rain. This far north is quite impressive to pick up that much rain - this was the second-most rain Milwaukee picked up over a 2 day stretch. Ever. Not just for the day - that record was obliterated<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-11 071226-1754918255019.png">All of that rain had to go somewhere, and area creeks swole past records too. Thursday, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.noaa.gov/news-release/prediction-remains-on-track-for-above-normal-atlantic-hurricane-season">NOAA issued an update</a> to their outlook for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. Although their numbers have adjusted down slightly, their predictions continue to foresee an above average season. This comes on the heels of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://tropical.colostate.edu/Forecast/2025-08.pdf">Colorado State University releasing its final forecast</a> for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season Wednesday. The forecast team at CSU, led by meteorologist Dr. Phil Klotzbach, kept their predictions the same as July. For August, they are stuck with 16 named storms overall, with eight of those predicted to be hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.&nbsp;It is important to note that both the NOAA and CSU forecasts include the four name storms that have already formed in the Atlantic (Andrea, Barry, Chantal and Dexter). Climatologically, around August 10 the rate at which storms form and grow accelerates quickly through the peak of the season around September 11.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1953109057427939468" src="https://x.com/philklotzbach/status/1953109057427939468"></div>The reason why the forecast has not changed much, or has gone down slightly since the April, is the uncertainty across the tropics. While sea surface temperatures in both the Atlantic and Pacific are still warm, and this tends to support storm formation, upper-level winds over the Caribbean have been unusually hostile during June and July. This atmospheric setup typically suppresses hurricane development in the Atlantic basin.&nbsp;<blockquote>“Many of the factors we identified ahead of the season are still at play, and conditions are largely tracking along with our May predictions,” said Matt Rosencrans, lead hurricane season forecaster with NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Prediction, part of the National Weather Service.&nbsp;</blockquote>RELATED ARTICLE: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/an-area-to-monitor-in-the-atlantic">Atlantic Waking Up, Eastern Pacific Staying Active</a><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-06 110050-1754499664701.png">The driving factor behind the above-average forecast remains the exceptionally warm waters across the eastern and central Atlantic Basin. Combined with a neutral El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a state that neither strongly inhibits nor enhances storm activity, these conditions could still favor a more active season.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-06 105940-1754499600405.png">Yet, forecasters are closely watching high levels of wind shear in the Caribbean, a phenomenon involving shifts in wind direction and speed with height. This shear is known to disrupt storm development. &nbsp;CSU also warns that the U.S. coastline faces an above-average risk of at least one major hurricane making landfall this season, a reminder that even in uncertain years, coastal residents should remain vigilant.&nbsp;<blockquote>"No two storms are alike. Every storm presents unique, life-threatening hazards that can impact people in both coastal and inland communities. Have a plan in place, and know the actions you should take before, during and after the wide range of hazards that the hurricane season can bring.”&nbsp;said NOAA’s National Weather Service Director Ken Graham.</blockquote><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-06 110039-1754499698410.png">With the arrival of August, the Atlantic hurricane season is entering its most active stretch, which typically peaks around September 10. The pattern is starting to get more active in the Atlantic. More Storms Along the Front Range

Another intense night of severe storms ripped through portions of the Upper-Midwest from Thursday night into Friday morning. Multiple bowing segments congealed into a large complex/squall line, which produced wind damage for over 300 miles across the states of Montana, North Dakota, and Minnesota. Thousands of households lost power while several structures have reported damage. Will this be classified as a derecho? According to NWS Grand Forks, Thursday's night storm was not classified as a derecho. A big severe strength wind storm to say the least, but the Storm Prediction Center has a full definition including multiple criteria that have to be met.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-08 061237-1754655858161.png">It certainly appears this system will meet the spatial requirements for a derecho as damaging wind reports (58+ mph) stretch for over 300 miles.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-08 061159-1754655182565.png">Peak gusts were well over 75 mph, with a gust at Gran Forks Air Force Base measured at 91 mph!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-08 061206-1754655189603.png">This squall line produced several 75+ mph gusts, which appear to be well separated as well. This also appears to meet the requirement for a derecho.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-08 061215-1754655197446.png">While it appears this system has met the basic 3 requirements for a derecho, other criteria (top of the page) have to be met as well. In addition, wind reports and reports of damage will have to be verified as accurate.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-08 061231-1754655205131.png">Derechos most often occur from the late spring through the summer, with a typical drop off in August.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-08 061246-1754655219174.png">

Possible Derecho Hit the Upper-Midwest Friday Morning

The Eastern and Central Pacific have had an interesting start to the season, with plenty of named storms (11 combined). This is above the average of 7, but the energy generated by these systems is only about 80% of what's typical for this time of year. Long story short, this region has had many systems, but they've been on the weaker side. That trend has continued this week with Henriette and Ivo which could bring minor impacts to nearby landmasses.<h1>Henriette</h1>On Friday, Henriette was downgraded to a remnant low as it continues to struggle in the Pacific. However, it is forecast to miss Hawaii and the strengthen again back to a tropical storm by next week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/1-1754708604519.png"><h1>IVO</h1>Ivo is expected to remain a tropical storm as it moves away from Cabo San Lucas and Mexico. It should weaken by early next week to a depression.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/1-1754708710767.png"><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/goes/floater.php?stormid=EP092025"> </a>Now that we have Ivo, up next on the list in the Pacific will be Juliette.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/tropical ivvo-1754519175244.png">We're far from the end of the Pacific Hurricane Season, with a secondary peak occurring later in September.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-05 104202-1754412196354.png">

A strong ridge of high pressure has been dominated the Southwestern US to end the week, leading to many new high temperature records. Phoenix, AZ set a new MONTHLY record on Thursday by reaching 118°, the hottest temperature in August since record keeping began.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-08 070907-1754658988601.png">Heat Alerts are in place through Friday. Several record high temperatures are in jeopardy. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-08 071536-1754659076585.png">Temperatures have reached 110° in areas of the southwest, and the hot temperatures will continue into the weekend with gradual cooling. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-08 071541-1754659121161.png">After tying a record high of 99 on Thursday, Denver is still expected to reach the upper 90s on Friday before a significant cool down this weekend.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-08 071547-1754659159209.png">The longer range temperature outlook has a higher level of confidence that temperatures will remain above average through the middle of August.<h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-08 072052-1754659261336.png"></h1>

Air Quality Alerts are in effect across a broad swath of the Upper Midwest, northeast, and northern New England, impacting many Americans as thick smoke from Canadian wildfires blankets the region. The worst of the air quality is found in the Great Lakes. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-04 144613-1754340411917.png">A new wave of wildfire smoke is drifting southward from multiple blazes burning across the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Manitoba. The "unhealthy" designation on the AQI scale indicates that the air quality is poor and may pose health risks, especially for sensitive groups.
