Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. It's here! The coldest air of the season and the Polar Vortex. Dangerously cold temperatures continue to spill south through the weekend and into the early work week. What is the polar vortex? You can think of it as a permanent area of low pressure that stays at the Earth's poles! A strong polar vortex does a good job of keeping that arctic air where it needs to be. Dangerously Cold Temps Spill Into the Lower 48 Late This Week

A rare winter storm is impacting parts of the South, Midwest, and Northeast starting today, through the weekend, and into early next week, bringing a combination of snow, sleet, and freezing rain to areas that typically do not experience wintry precipitation. &nbsp;Winter storm watches, warnings, and advisories have been issued in advance of this winter storm with varying totals.<h1>Forecast Timing</h1>This impactful weather system will unfold in two waves into early next week. The first wave is impacting the South and the mid-south now. The stronger second wave is set to slide in tonight and continue into Monday from Texas to the East Coast. On Sunday, the potential for severe weather will also be on the table along the Gulf Coast. For the Northeast, it will be mostly all snow, although we could see a changeover to a mix for the Mid Atlantic region with warmer air moving in from the south.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/01-24 wide-1769293746644.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The totals of snow and ice are the trickiest part of this forecast. Models suggest snowfall totals over a foot will be possible across the Northeast, Ohio Valley, and Southern Plains of Kansas and Oklahoma. Freezing rain will be highly impactful for portions of Interstate 20 and 85 across the South with accretion over 1" thick. Where the freezing line is will determine your type of precipitation.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-24 122317-1769282609019.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-24 122322-1769282613621.png"><h1>Regional Breakdown</h1><h2>South</h2>States including Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi are likely to see some of the worst of the ice totals from this storm. Our forecasts have widespread 0.25 to 0.5 inches of ice with some areas seeing crippling ice totals upwards of one inch.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-24 122821-1769282910365.png">Snow totals looks to be heaviest here north of I-20, and especially north of I-40. Some areas have already received upwards of 6" of snow and sleet.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-24 122625-1769282998255.png"><h2>Appalachia</h2>In the Appalachian mountain, a phenomenon called cold air damming may be the reason we also see crippling ice here. Cold air damming is when dense, cold air gets trapped against the east side of the mountains, causing cooler, cloudier, and often wetter weather to persist.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-24 122737-1769283084237.png">Sleet and snowfall totals may alter the amount of ice these areas see.<h2>Northeast</h2>In the northeast, if you're in New England, we expect this to primarily be a snowfall event. This warm airmass will get pulled north out ahead of the advancing cold front. Increasing instability and strong Jetstream dynamics will fuel a growing thunderstorm risk into the afternoon hours. Here is the latest timing of the severe storm chances on Sunday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/01-24 rsc rse bams-1769292259292.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Heavy rain will be falling as early as dawn on Sunday, but as instability builds during the day, storms are expected to strengthen as they move east along the cold front. Severe Thunderstorms Possible Across the South on Sunday

For much of this winter season, the Southwestern United States has been under the influence of a large, blocking ridge of high pressure. This ridge has sent storms well to the north, keeping the southwest dry and warm. While a few soaking systems helped push drought conditions out of California, the Four Corners have been seeing drought conditions worsen with snow pack rivaling the worst on record (snow pack records date back about 40 years).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-22 130618-1769112396676.png">A wet storm system has moved in from the Pacific bringing heavy rain and snow back to these parched locations. Winter weather alerts remain in place for portions of New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona lasting through Sunday morning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/1-1769282786179.png">As the upper low slides east into the Desert Southwest, snow, rain, and a wintry mix will continue to expand. Widespread rain is expected in Arizona and lower elevations of New Mexico, while mountain areas and locations east of I-25 see heavy snowfall. The heavy precipitation will gradually wind down through Sunday morning, with some snow showers still falling in New Mexico.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/New Baron Video 3-1769282927617.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Snowfall totals look impressive in Colorado and New Mexico, with many high elevation locations looking at 6-12". Even portions of Arizona can expect some 6"+. Expect major delays on several interstates in Colorado and New Mexico, such as I-25, I-40, and I-70.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/1-1769282974253.png">Even rainfall will be impressive in portions of California, Arizona, and New Mexico. A high pressure center has moved in across the NE and that has continued to pull winds out of the NW. The Northeast braces for widespread winter impacts over the weekend. The weekend storm will make these advisories seem like peanuts. Snow Continues for the Great Lakes, Northeast

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

Sub-freezing temperatures made their way into the South and Southeast once again Sunday into Monday, with lows in the 30s as far south as South Florida! Temperatures Monday morning (above) dropped down to 25 for Jacksonville, FL and 28 in Atlanta, GA.These chilly temps were cold enough to stun cold-blooded Iguanas, which are an invasive species.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="2012155375894806776" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/2012155375894806776"></div>Freeze Alerts remain through Tuesday morning. These are typically issued at the start or end of the growing season, but in the case of Florida, the growing season is a little more ambiguous. SOUTH - Rounds of cold arctic air have been pushing across the South. As we head into the weekend, another frontal system will draw in just enough cold air and encounter just enough moisture to bring the potential for snow to the South. Totals should be on the lighter side, but some areas could see 1-3" stick.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/web1-1768735519341.png">A winter weather advisory has been issued from eastern Alabama into southern Georgia, even a few into the northern Panhandle of Florida! Snow could accumulate in these areas, including interstates like I-75, I-16, and I-20.<h2>Forecast</h2>The NBM (National Blend of Models) shows the probability of snow across the South. Currently, the best chances are from southeastern Alabama up through the Carolinas.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/2026-01-18 06-27-17-1768735661002.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Moisture is likely to begin as rainfall on Saturday before transitioning to snow into late Saturday night, but more likely Sunday morning. Snow in The South: Light Accumulations Sunday Morning

An unsettled and highly active weather pattern is taking hold across the Great Lakes and the Northeast, bringing rounds of snow, gusty winds, and rapidly changing conditions to millions of people.&nbsp;Several waves of low pressure are diving across the East, bringing multiple waves of precipitation over the next few days. A series of fast-moving fronts, fueled by cold air spilling out of Canada, will set the stage for a stretch of winter weather that will last into the coming week. Areas from the Great Lakes down to the Ohio River Valley will have a shot at some rain and snow.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/1-1768619209313.png">Lake-effect snow has been one of the biggest stories in the region. As cold air moves over the warm waters of the Great Lakes, bands of heavy snow are developing and repeatedly targeting communities downwind of the lakes. Parts of western and northern New York, northern Pennsylvania, and northern Michigan are seeing the greatest impacts, with snowfall totals piling up in localized areas. Some towns could measure accumulations in feet rather than inches, especially in teast and southeast of Lakes Erie and Ontario.&nbsp;<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="2011996831174312006" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/2011996831174312006"></div><h1>Timing &amp; Alerts</h1>The latest system has been moving across the Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley on Friday. As this front moves out, there will be another storm system by Sunday, as an area of low pressure develops off the coast.In addition to lake-effect snow, several clipper-type systems are tracking through the Midwest and into the Northeast. These compact but potent storms are producing bursts of snow, slick travel conditions, and occasional wintry mixes. Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

The Warmth continues across the west. You wouldn't think we had enough snow in the mountains to bring on avalanches, but that's the case. All it takes are two differing layers of snow and you could have a problem. Avalanche Danger Continues Out West

Most of the lower 48 has been missing out on a lot of Winter. Areas along the West Coast and Great Lakes have had an active Winter, but other than them, many along or east of the Rockies have been quiet so far. Not Alaska.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-07 100656-1767805655200.png">Heavy snowfall towards the end of 2025 was enough to sink boats around Juneau. By the end of the month, the airport in Juneau had measured more snow than any December prior, and it wasn't even close! Areas from Anchorage to Haines have picked up close to 20 more inches of snow. Not to mention it's been coming in with limited visibility with some blizzard conditions. Another system moving in threatens to bring warmer temperatures along with additional precipitation.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-07 101334-1767806446476.png">Residents have been asked to clear any clogged storm drain nearby, with officials giving the okay to dump "clean" snow into nearby bodies of water. The weight of the snow has caved in roofs in addition to sinking boats in local harbors.<h1>WHY ARE WARM TEMPERATURES BAD</h1>You would think a nice thawing out would help ease problems in Alaska but it could actually cause more harm. If temperatures warm enough to end the week, rain falling on top of snow will help rapidly melt the pack. Then, everything is running off, not just the rain. The Northeastern U.S. has been one of the more active regions of the country so far this winter in terms of ice and snow, with plenty piling up around the Great Lakes and into New England. A warmer system brought rain and gusty winds to the Northeast on Friday, but another wet and colder system keeps some snow around through tonight. Winter Weather Alerts (above) have been issued for parts of New England. <h1>Looking Ahead This Week</h1>Another wave of rain, snow, and cool air will keep the Northeast active this week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-11 154414-1768171512872.png">Moisture will start out over the Great Lakes and move into the Northeast. Snow Squalls In The Northeast

It has been one year since the Palisades and Eaton fires burned through local communities in Los Angeles County on January 7, 2025. The lasting impacts are still being felt across the region, both on the ground and in the atmosphere. The fires took 31 lives and burned down 18,000 buildings and homes.&nbsp;The fires ignited during a period of extreme fire weather, fueled by prolonged drought, critically low humidity, and strong offshore winds. The Palisades&nbsp;fire initially started with an open flame in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles. Firefighters were able to contain&nbsp;the flames above ground, but the fire continued to burn underground. At the time of ignition, relative humidity values dropped into the single digits, while wind gusts frequently exceeded 40 to 60 mph, creating ideal conditions for the rapid spread of the fire. The National Weather Service even issued a Particularly Dangerous Situation for these fires. These factors allowed flames to move miles in just hours, overwhelming containment efforts during the initial stages. The Palisades fire grew to 23,707 acres.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-07 041825-1767784832298.png">The Eaton Fire ignited in Altadena shortly after the Palisades Fire. In this fire, close to 10,000 homes were destroyed and 19 lives were lost, as the fire ravaged 14,021 acres by the time of its containment on January 31, 2024.&nbsp;<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/2026-01-07 04-18-40-1767784809714.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Rainfall deficits leading up to the fires played a major role in their intensity. Many areas had received less than 50 percent of their average precipitation over the previous 6 to 12 months, resulting in exceptionally dry vegetation. Live fuel moisture levels were near record lows for late season, and energy release components, an index used to measure potential fire intensity, were well above climatological averages. &nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-07 040748-1767784265056.png">Once the fires were established, towering smoke plumes injected particulates high into the atmosphere, degrading air quality across hundreds of miles and prompting repeated air quality alerts as fine particulate concentrations surged well above health-based thresholds.&nbsp;<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/2025-12_2025-01-09_g18_abi_meso_geocolor-fires-1767898580832.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>In the aftermath, the weather continued to complicate recovery. The first significant rain events following the fires produced short bursts of heavy rainfall, falling on soils unable to absorb water efficiently. Rainfall rates of just a half inch per hour were enough to trigger runoff, mudslides, and debris flows within burn scars. Damaging roads and infrastructure months after the flames were extinguished. Emergency managers were forced to pivot from wildfire response to managing the floods, highlighting the compound risks associated with extreme weather.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-07 091018-1767802242571.png">A year later, both fires are on California's most destructive fires list. Weather and climate data show early signs of ecological recovery, but also ongoing vulnerability. Native grasses and shrubs have begun to return, aided by winter&nbsp;rainfall.&nbsp;The Palisades and Eaton fires now serve as a stark example of how weather extremes, heat, wind, drought, and heavy rainfall are reshaping wildfire behavior. &nbsp;
