Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. During the winter months, many of us are no strangers to chilly temps and downright unbearable cold. However, Mother Nature often times likes to bend the rules a bit. A weakening polar vortex is likely to spell trouble for the High Plains late this week. What is the polar vortex? You can think of it as a permanent area of low pressure that stays at the Earth's poles! A strong polar vortex does a good job of keeping that arctic air where it needs to be. However, during the winter months, a weak polar vortex can allow some of that air to sink into the U.S.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/web1-1768833952146.png"><h2>The North</h2>Cold weather alerts have been issued for these areas through the end of the week, with dangerously cold temperatures in the forecast. Wind chills as low as 50 below zero are expected.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-21 171932-1769041181594.png">Alerts extend across the Northeast for cities like Burlington, VT and Watertown, NY. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-21 132353-1769027037785.png">This polar air will have some pretty hefty impacts across the High Plains. Thermometers will read values well below zero, but once you factor in that wind, the wind chill will take you down to 30 to 50 below zero in places like the Twin Cities and Bismarck. But it gets worse. Let's say you find yourself in northern Minnesota. Roseau could see wind chill values as low as 49 degrees below zero! Dangerously Cold Temps Spill Into the Lower 48 Late This Week

A rare winter storm is expected to&nbsp;impact parts of the deep South starting Friday and into the weekend, bringing a combination of snow, sleet, and freezing rain to areas that typically do not experience wintry precipitation. A surge of cold Arctic air will slide southward late Friday into Saturday, setting the stage for temperatures to fall below freezing across much of the region just as moisture moves in from the west.&nbsp;Winter storm watches have been issued in advance of this winter storm with varying totals.Meteorologist Patrick Crawford spoke with the National Weather Service in Little Rock Arkansas, about this upcoming winter storm.<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Fnh473lIkEI?si=NgB_ssIknbTVXYNf" start="0"></iframe></div><h1>SETUP</h1>Air that's normally locked up around the poles looks to break off from the region. From there, it will slide southward, invading the southern states. Sub-freezing temperatures will settle in behind this Arctic front, potentially as early as Friday. At the same time, a disturbance will roll onshore from Baja California, providing the lift and moisture needed to cause problems.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/web2-1769014290254.png"><h1>TIMING</h1>This is where we could see the trickiest part of the forecast, not named precipitation type. As the system develops, light to moderate precipitation is expected to overspread the area, with the exact type depending on surface temperatures and the depth of the cold air. Some locations may experience snow at the onset, while others will transition quickly to sleet or freezing rain. Even small amounts of ice could create hazardous travel conditions, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roadways.&nbsp;Models have been inconsistent about pushing the cold air in, with some as early as Friday morning. If that pans out, the Friday evening's commute could be in some trouble. Saturday feels like a safer bet to see trouble, especially in the morning. We spoke with the National Weather Service out of Little Rock, Arkansas, and this is what they had to say.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/01-21 bams18z-1769040995655.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>SNOW, ICE, AND SLEET TOTALS</h1>The totals of snow and ice are the trickiest part of this forecast. Power outages are possible where ice builds up on trees and power lines, and travel disruptions could occur as drivers encounter slick roads. Residents are encouraged to monitor the forecast closely, limit travel if possible, and take precautions to protect people, pets, and property from the cold.&nbsp;With this storm likely not moving in until at least Friday afternoon, there is plenty of time to prepare. Rare Snow & Ice Threatens the South-Central and Eastern U.S. Fri-Sun

Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

For much of this winter season, the Southwestern United States has been under the influence of a large, blocking ridge of high pressure. This ridge has sent storms well to the north, keeping the southwest dry and warm. While a few soaking systems helped push drought conditions out of California, the Four Corners have been seeing drought conditions worsen with snow pack rivaling the worst on record (snow pack records date back about 40 years).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-21 090610-1769015379472.png">A wet storm system is expected to move in from the Pacific to end the week, bringing heavy rain and snow back to these parched locations. Winter weather alerts have been issued for portions of New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona starting Friday morning, but expect more of the surrounding area to see additional alerts issued in the next few days.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-21 170839-1769040591822.png">As the low moves across the interior, scattered rain and snow are expected to develop in California by Thursday morning. Isolated showers will spread into the Great Basin and Four Corners by the evening hours, but showers will greatly increase in coverage and intensity throughout the day on Friday. By Saturday morning, widespread rain is expected in Arizona and lower elevations of New Mexico, while mountain areas and locations east of I-25 see heavy snowfall. The heavy precipitation will gradually wind down through Sunday morning, with some snow showers still falling in New Mexico.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/10-21 west-1769040624321.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Snowfall totals look impressive in Colorado and New Mexico, with many high elevation locations looking at 6-12". Even portions of Arizona and California can expect some 6"+. NORTHERN PLAINS - Blizzard warnings are in place through tonight across portions of the Plains as we expect visibility less than a quarter of a mile, winds greater than 35 mph, and snow falling. Blizzard Warnings Though This Evening and More Snow

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

Sub-freezing temperatures made their way into the South and Southeast once again Sunday into Monday, with lows in the 30s as far south as South Florida! Temperatures Monday morning (above) dropped down to 25 for Jacksonville, FL and 28 in Atlanta, GA.These chilly temps were cold enough to stun cold-blooded Iguanas, which are an invasive species.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="2012155375894806776" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/2012155375894806776"></div>Freeze Alerts remain through Tuesday morning. These are typically issued at the start or end of the growing season, but in the case of Florida, the growing season is a little more ambiguous. SOUTH - Rounds of cold arctic air have been pushing across the South. As we head into the weekend, another frontal system will draw in just enough cold air and encounter just enough moisture to bring the potential for snow to the South. Totals should be on the lighter side, but some areas could see 1-3" stick.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/web1-1768735519341.png">A winter weather advisory has been issued from eastern Alabama into southern Georgia, even a few into the northern Panhandle of Florida! Snow could accumulate in these areas, including interstates like I-75, I-16, and I-20.<h2>Forecast</h2>The NBM (National Blend of Models) shows the probability of snow across the South. Currently, the best chances are from southeastern Alabama up through the Carolinas.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/2026-01-18 06-27-17-1768735661002.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Moisture is likely to begin as rainfall on Saturday before transitioning to snow into late Saturday night, but more likely Sunday morning. Snow in The South: Light Accumulations Sunday Morning

An unsettled and highly active weather pattern is taking hold across the Great Lakes and the Northeast, bringing rounds of snow, gusty winds, and rapidly changing conditions to millions of people.&nbsp;Several waves of low pressure are diving across the East, bringing multiple waves of precipitation over the next few days. A series of fast-moving fronts, fueled by cold air spilling out of Canada, will set the stage for a stretch of winter weather that will last into the coming week. Areas from the Great Lakes down to the Ohio River Valley will have a shot at some rain and snow.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/1-1768619209313.png">Lake-effect snow has been one of the biggest stories in the region. As cold air moves over the warm waters of the Great Lakes, bands of heavy snow are developing and repeatedly targeting communities downwind of the lakes. Parts of western and northern New York, northern Pennsylvania, and northern Michigan are seeing the greatest impacts, with snowfall totals piling up in localized areas. Some towns could measure accumulations in feet rather than inches, especially in teast and southeast of Lakes Erie and Ontario.&nbsp;<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="2011996831174312006" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/2011996831174312006"></div><h1>Timing &amp; Alerts</h1>The latest system has been moving across the Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley on Friday. The first front will advance east, with the I-95 corridor seeing increased rain and snow chances by dawn. As this front moves out, there will be another storm system by Sunday, as an area of low pressure develops off the coast.In addition to lake-effect snow, several clipper-type systems are tracking through the Midwest and into the Northeast. These compact but potent storms are producing bursts of snow, slick travel conditions, and occasional wintry mixes. While these systems are not major coastal storms, they are arriving frequently enough to keep roads hazardous and snowplows busy.&nbsp;<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/New Baron Video 3-1768619337959.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-16 171720-1768609058574.png"><h1>Forecast Totals</h1>Through the weekend, the heaviest amount of snow will be found across parts of the Great Lakes with totals over a foot. Totals could add up quickly in New England, too, particularly in the higher elevations of western Massachusetts. In addition, major cities along the I-95 corridor have a shot of accumulating snow through tomorrow morning and again on Sunday. Active Pattern Continues for the Northeast and Great Lakes

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

The Warmth continues across the west. Avalanche Danger Continues Out West

Most of the lower 48 has been missing out on a lot of Winter. Areas along the West Coast and Great Lakes have had an active Winter, but other than them, many along or east of the Rockies have been quiet so far. Not Alaska.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-07 100656-1767805655200.png">Heavy snowfall towards the end of 2025 was enough to sink boats around Juneau. By the end of the month, the airport in Juneau had measured more snow than any December prior, and it wasn't even close! Over 80 inches of snow fell throughout the month, with multiple daily records sprinkled in.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-07 100846-1767805743282.png">We spoke with the National Weather Service office in Juneau, Alaska to learn more about this historic snowfall.UPDATE: January 11th, 2026<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3FsdYGphtqE" start="0"></iframe></div><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zhaLChRQkac" start="0"></iframe></div>Since 2026 has rolled around, it has only kept snowing. Areas from Anchorage to Haines have picked up close to 20 more inches of snow. Not to mention it's been coming in with limited visibility with some blizzard conditions. Another system moving in threatens to bring warmer temperatures along with additional precipitation.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-07 101334-1767806446476.png">Residents have been asked to clear any clogged storm drain nearby, with officials giving the okay to dump "clean" snow into nearby bodies of water. The weight of the snow has caved in roofs in addition to sinking boats in local harbors.<h1>WHY ARE WARM TEMPERATURES BAD</h1>You would think a nice thawing out would help ease problems in Alaska but it could actually cause more harm. If temperatures warm enough to end the week, rain falling on top of snow will help rapidly melt the pack. Then, everything is running off, not just the rain. The Northeastern U.S. has been one of the more active regions of the country so far this winter in terms of ice and snow, with plenty piling up around the Great Lakes and into New England. A warmer system brought rain and gusty winds to the Northeast on Friday, but another wet and colder system keeps some snow around through tonight. Winter Weather Alerts (above) have been issued for parts of New England. <h1>Looking Ahead This Week</h1>Another wave of rain, snow, and cool air will keep the Northeast active this week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-11 154414-1768171512872.png">Moisture will start out over the Great Lakes and move into the Northeast. Snow Squalls In The Northeast

It has been one year since the Palisades and Eaton fires burned through local communities in Los Angeles County on January 7, 2025. The lasting impacts are still being felt across the region, both on the ground and in the atmosphere. The fires took 31 lives and burned down 18,000 buildings and homes.&nbsp;The fires ignited during a period of extreme fire weather, fueled by prolonged drought, critically low humidity, and strong offshore winds. The Palisades&nbsp;fire initially started with an open flame in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles. Firefighters were able to contain&nbsp;the flames above ground, but the fire continued to burn underground. At the time of ignition, relative humidity values dropped into the single digits, while wind gusts frequently exceeded 40 to 60 mph, creating ideal conditions for the rapid spread of the fire. The National Weather Service even issued a Particularly Dangerous Situation for these fires. These factors allowed flames to move miles in just hours, overwhelming containment efforts during the initial stages. The Palisades fire grew to 23,707 acres.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-07 041825-1767784832298.png">The Eaton Fire ignited in Altadena shortly after the Palisades Fire. In this fire, close to 10,000 homes were destroyed and 19 lives were lost, as the fire ravaged 14,021 acres by the time of its containment on January 31, 2024.&nbsp;<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/2026-01-07 04-18-40-1767784809714.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Rainfall deficits leading up to the fires played a major role in their intensity. Many areas had received less than 50 percent of their average precipitation over the previous 6 to 12 months, resulting in exceptionally dry vegetation. Live fuel moisture levels were near record lows for late season, and energy release components, an index used to measure potential fire intensity, were well above climatological averages. &nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-07 040748-1767784265056.png">Once the fires were established, towering smoke plumes injected particulates high into the atmosphere, degrading air quality across hundreds of miles and prompting repeated air quality alerts as fine particulate concentrations surged well above health-based thresholds.&nbsp;<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/2025-12_2025-01-09_g18_abi_meso_geocolor-fires-1767898580832.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>In the aftermath, the weather continued to complicate recovery. The first significant rain events following the fires produced short bursts of heavy rainfall, falling on soils unable to absorb water efficiently. Rainfall rates of just a half inch per hour were enough to trigger runoff, mudslides, and debris flows within burn scars. Damaging roads and infrastructure months after the flames were extinguished. Emergency managers were forced to pivot from wildfire response to managing the floods, highlighting the compound risks associated with extreme weather.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-07 091018-1767802242571.png">A year later, both fires are on California's most destructive fires list. Weather and climate data show early signs of ecological recovery, but also ongoing vulnerability. Native grasses and shrubs have begun to return, aided by winter&nbsp;rainfall.&nbsp;The Palisades and Eaton fires now serve as a stark example of how weather extremes, heat, wind, drought, and heavy rainfall are reshaping wildfire behavior. &nbsp;

<h1>Outlooks &amp; Timing</h1>Friday night and Saturday morning was active tracking severe weather and flash flooding. We do have some good news as the severe weather threat has ended! The National Weather Service crews will be out surveying a few areas where tornadoes did touchdown across the South.
