<h1>Tropical Storm Erin</h1>In the latest National Hurricane Center update, Tropical Storm Erin is moving westward across the Atlantic and is expected to strengthen to a major hurricane by this weekend. As of now, Erin does not have the best appearance, as the storm looks ragged. Over the next 48 hours, Erin is expected to get better organized as it moves from drier air and into warmer waters. The storm is still moving west of the Cabo Verde Islands, and is projected to come close to the Leeward Islands eventually. With winds up to 45 mph, the NHC has named this system Tropical Storm Erin. Right now, the cone of uncertainty has Erin increasing to a Category 3 hurricane by this weekend.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-13 040706-1755079645471.png">Forecast FactorsErin is forecasted to track westward, then take a slight curve back to the east. The ridge of high pressure over the Atlantic will be a big influence on Erin's path forward.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-12 080107-1755007275941.png">Models keep the center of circulation strong on this system despite the dry air, though it may be more of a struggle than the model below depicts (GFS). The long-range temperature trend towards the end of August shows higher confidence that temperatures will remain above average. Even this week, temperatures are feeling the summertime heat. Let's put an end to that, at least for now. <h1>Relief!</h1>A sharp cold front delivers cooler air to the PNW on Wednesday. That will drop temperatures substantially from the low 90's in Seattle on Tuesday to the 70's on Wednesday. Another reinforcing shot of cooler air moves in this weekend, but that one has some rain chances with it. I think we'll take it give how the first part of the week was shaping up. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/hot to cool-1755031407101.png">Temperatures throughout Southern California will also be hot compared to normal. Coast to Coast Heat With Some Relief

It's been a hot and dry stretch in the West. Basically anytime the winds have kicked up, the wildfire risk has followed suit. After just about a month of fire weather concerns, numerous fires have erupted and continue to burn.<h1>GIFFORD FIRE</h1>Burning as California's largest wildfire in 2025, the Gifford Fire has torched over 125k acres. The good news has been the containment numbers in recent days. The Lee Fire has only been burning for a little over a week, but has burned almost as many acres as the Gifford Fire, over 120k acres. Most of the poor air quality has been locked up around Grand Junction, fluctuating at times. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/tomer smoke forecast-1755045169641.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>DRAGON BRAVO FIRE</h1>One of the largest fires in Arizona history, the Dragon Bravo Fire, has continued to smolder along the Northern Rim of the Grand Canyon. It has burned more than 140,000 acres, making it the 7th largest in state history.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1953931727044223408" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1953931727044223408"></div>Another fire that has cropped up in the last few days was the Billy Fire which is burning northeast of Phoenix. That is burning in Tonto National Forest after being ignited by lightning on August 11.<h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-13 091857-1755098348742.png">FORECAST</h1>Wednesday looks like it'll be the most concerning day of the next few. A trough will push a cold front through part of the West Coast. That front will kick up winds, AND turn them out of the west. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

Get a blanket and find some dark skies! One of the most prolific meteor showers of the year will peak during the upcoming week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/TOMER PERSEID-1754872084317.jpg">The Perseid Meteor Shower typically reaches a peak during the second week of August as the Earth moves through the debris field left by Comet Swift-Tuttle, which makes a trip through the solar system once every 133 years, last visiting the inner-solar system in 1992. Debris left by the comet dives through the Earth's atmosphere to create the beautiful meteor shower we expect. 2025 isn't expected to be the best year to see the meteors, unfortunately, as the waning gibbous moon will rise in the evening, washing out any faint meteors that may have been seen under a new moon. Ideal conditions can produce 50-100 meteors per hour, but with the brightness from the moon, expect 20-50 under dark skies away from city lights.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-10 052401-1754829026071.png"><h2>A Pair of Planets</h2>Another fun astronomical event will be gracing the morning skies through much of this week - the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/TOMER PERSIED 2-1754872142561.jpg">These planets will appear to be right next to each other in the morning sky, even through they're still millions of miles apart! Flash flooding continues to hit the Southeast hard - especially Florida. A trough of low pressure is still spinning in parts of the southeast, keeping the rain chances nearby. A stationary storm sat and rained over the same spot, on Sanibel Island, for much of Sunday morning (8/10). That efficient tropical rain added up to over a foot of rain by the time the weekend was done. Florida is normally a tad more resilient to fresh water flooding, but nowhere can handle that much rain. Over a Foot of Rain Falls in Southwest Florida

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. A Marginal threat for strong and severe storms is in place across the plains through Monday night into early Tuesday. Strong Storms Across the Plains Monday night

This tornado hit downtown Fort Lauderdale, FL on Saturday causing power flashes and damage to areas near Federal Highway and Los Olas Boulevard. It was associated with a line of heavy rain that had been crossing much of the state for most of the day. The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed the tornado, saying they received multiple videos and phone calls regarding the severe storm. Meteorologists from NWS Miami will survey the damage to determine the strength of the tornado.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/01/Florida Funnels 1-06-1704630529995.png">This storm was in addition to a couple of funnel clouds across South Florida on Saturday. Video on social media showed what appeared to be a funnel cloud near Moore Haven, Florida around 1:30 p.m. ET near Rt. 78. Another report of a funnel cloud came in from St. Lucie County about an hour later from an off-duty NWS meteorologist. Both reports did not specifically say the funnel clouds touched down as tornadoes.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/01/Fort Lauderdale tornado loop-1704630618569.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Additional pockets of heavy rain will develop across South Florida through Sunday. This will mean it will be a little bit cloudy for your beach day in Florida on Sunday (especially in the southern part of the state)! Another one to two inches of rain, isolated amounts up to three inches, will be possible in South Florida through the end of the weekend.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/01/Screenshot 2024-01-06 160800-1704582577245.jpg">Additional severe storms will return to Florida this week on Monday and Tuesday.
