Yep, you read that right — a nor’easter is setting its sights on the Northeast. If you’re from the region, you know what that means: high winds, big waves, and usually heavy snow. This time, we’re skipping the snow — but a cold, soaking rain is likely.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-21 070458-1747833243953.png"><h1>SETUP</h1>A slow-moving low will be overtaken by a secondary ripple of energy late tonight into Thursday. That secondary disturbance will ignite the development of our nor’easter. As the system deepens, winds will ramp up, drawing in cooler air and fueling the storm even further.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-21 070447-1747833226004.png"><h1>WINDS</h1>Regardless of time of the time of year, you can't have a nor'easter without some winds. Gusts of 40–50 mph are expected across eastern Massachusetts through Thursday. Secure loose objects and be prepared for possible tree damage.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-21 070537-1747833381138.png"><h1>RAIN</h1>While it won’t be cold enough for snow this time, we’re looking at a driving rain — possibly coming in sideways! A couple of inches are likely across much of the region, with the heaviest totals (up to 4 inches) expected from Pennsylvania through southern New England.<h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-21 190800-1747876135935.png">POWER OUTAGES</h1>Saturated soils plus strong winds? That’s a recipe for scattered power outages. Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. RED RIVER VALLEY - After a very active start to the week, severe chances are back in the forecast for the Red River Valley, the Arklatex, and central Texas. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a SLIGHT (level 2 out of 5) risk for severe storms on Thursday across these areas. This risk includes cities such as Dallas, Texas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-21 191208-1747876512374.png">Conditions will be favorable for intense storms, with warm, humid air (upper 60s to low 70s dewpoints) and strong winds at different levels of the atmosphere. This setup could lead to supercell thunderstorms, which are capable of producing large to very large hail as well as a chance for a tornado.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-21 191746-1747876673945.png">Strong storms are likely to form in central Oklahoma on Thursday, starting north of the Red River. These storms will move south into northern Texas during the day. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/05-21 rsc-1747876711988.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Friday - Saturday</h2>On Friday, moist air returns ahead of our next system that is expected to form over the High Plains. This will lead to thunderstorms in the central nd southern Plains, some of which could turn strong to severe. The SPC has issued a MARGINAL (level 1 out of 5) risk for severe storms on Friday for Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, and into western Texas. West Texas's storms will be driven by a dryline.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-21 191915-1747876928035.png">Strong storms, including supercells with hail, may form in the afternoon and evening, especially in Colorado and surrounding areas.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/05-21 fri to sat-1747876970216.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video> There is a flooding risk with this weekend's storms as well. The WPC has issued SLIGHT (level 2 out of 5) risks for flash flooding across the Plains for Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, flash flooding is possible in the Ozarks and north-central High Plains. On Sunday, a larger area from northeast Texas to the Mississippi Valley is at risk for heavy rain and flooding. The stretch of record heat continues in Texas, Louisiana, and Florida through Saturday. Highs stay in the 90s and low 100s.<h2>Texas</h2>Southern Texas has been scorching hot with days of records over the past few days. Through the end of the week, there are still many locations including Austin, that could break record highs.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-20 210028-1747796535880.png">Forecast highs in Austin and Houston on Thursday will rise to the mid-90s.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-20 210020-1747796549104.png"><h2>Florida</h2>Records are likely to fall in Florida at the end of the week as well.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-20 210024-1747796636064.png">Temperatures on Thursday are expected to be in the 90s across South Florida, with heat index values even higher.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-20 210034-1747796659553.png">How do you stay safe in this kind of heat? Stormy Conditions in Florida the Rest of the Week

Hurricane Season has begun in the Eastern Pacific basin, right on schedule. The season officially kicked off on May 15, and just days in, we have our first area to monitor.An area off the western coast of Mexico (pictured above), an area of low pressure, could form this weekend or early next week. This development would be hundreds of miles south of Mexico. Conditions appear favorable for a tropical depression to form around mid-next week.That said, take any long-range model output with a grain of salt. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season typically ramps up slowly, with activity peaking in mid-August and again in late September.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-20 073348-1747748094171.png">If this system were to strengthen and receive a name from the National Hurricane Center, Alvin would be first on the list in the Pacific.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-20 070214-1747748273874.png">

Chances of Development Increasing in the Pacific

CALIFORNIA - The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory through Thursday evening for southern California, including Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles counties. Temperatures in these regions are expected to reach up to 100°F, with some locations potentially breaking record highs.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-21 144703-1747860430549.png">Areas that are expected to experience the most intense heat are the San Fernando, San Gabriel, and Santa Clarita valleys, where high temperatures may climb to 90 to 100°F over the next couple of afternoons. Even areas along the coast may see unusually high temperatures.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-20 130312-1747768046979.png">Here's a look at our forecasted temperatures for the Thursday to Saturday timeframe in southern California, the Mohave Desert, and into Arizona.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-21 144837-1747860523568.png">In addition to the heat, there is an increased fire risk. Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

A strong area of low pressure and an associated cold front brought strong and severe storms as it swept from west to east. Damaging winds, tornadoes, and large hail were all reported. Hailstones up to 3.00" were reported in Franklin, TN. The severe threat will remain overnight.<h1>OVERNIGHT</h1>Overnight, an ENHANCED (Level 3 out of 5) risk for severe weather remains in effect for parts of Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia. Damaging winds, large hail, and even a few tornadoes will be possible with this system into the morning hours.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/OVERNIGHT FFFFFFF-1747789788163.png"><h1>Timing</h1>Storms will follow along the front through the overnight hours. Have multiple ways to get alerts as the storms move through. Things will be much calmer for a lot of folks tomorrow morning as the front moves further south. Along the frontal boundary, a severe threat remains for Wednesday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/FJFJFJFEEE-1747789886618.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Wednesday</h1>The cold front continues to track eastward, impacting areas from the Mid-Atlantic to the Florida-Georgia line. Severe Storms Move East Overnight

This tornado hit downtown Fort Lauderdale, FL on Saturday causing power flashes and damage to areas near Federal Highway and Los Olas Boulevard. It was associated with a line of heavy rain that had been crossing much of the state for most of the day. The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed the tornado, saying they received multiple videos and phone calls regarding the severe storm. Meteorologists from NWS Miami will survey the damage to determine the strength of the tornado.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/01/Florida Funnels 1-06-1704630529995.png">This storm was in addition to a couple of funnel clouds across South Florida on Saturday. Video on social media showed what appeared to be a funnel cloud near Moore Haven, Florida around 1:30 p.m. ET near Rt. 78. Another report of a funnel cloud came in from St. Lucie County about an hour later from an off-duty NWS meteorologist. Both reports did not specifically say the funnel clouds touched down as tornadoes.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/01/Fort Lauderdale tornado loop-1704630618569.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Additional pockets of heavy rain will develop across South Florida through Sunday. This will mean it will be a little bit cloudy for your beach day in Florida on Sunday (especially in the southern part of the state)!
