Strong tornadoes (EF-2+), hurricane-force gusts, and hail bigger than golf balls will be possible. Storms have developed and we have seen large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes. This threat will continue as the line moves east. It will be extra important to have ways to receive weather alerts.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/through sundaa-1742002726639.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Saturday</h2>Severe storms start much earlier on Saturday, continuing from the overnight hours Friday through the morning. Storms intensify again in the late morning on Saturday, with the afternoon and evening expected to be the busiest for severe weather and tornadoes. A HIGH risk (level 5 out of 5) has also been issued for Saturday across the lower Mississippi Valley and the Deep South. The enhanced and moderate risk covers areas from Tennessee to the Gulf.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-14 113637-1741973828941.jpg">Significant severe weather is also possible on Saturday. Locations in the hatched region below could see strong tornadoes, larger hail, and/or hurricane-force wind gusts.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/1-1741976976414.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/1-1741977028545.png">SUNDAYThe severe threat will round out the end of the weekend, with the eastern seaboard up next on Sunday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-14 041911-1741947559175.jpg"><h1>Flooding Threat</h1>Flooding looks like another issue to monitor later this week as well. Severe Weather Outbreak Expected Through the Weekend

It's been incredibly dry over parts of the Lone Star state. Like many things in life, dry time is helpful but in moderation. We're on the 2nd driest stretch in recorded history in El Paso. Not even a tenth of an inch has been measured since mid-November!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-12 061619-1741782486909.jpg">All of that dry weather has led to an abundance of dry fuels to burn around the West Texas and southern New Mexico region. Any time the winds kick up, the fire concerns will return until more rain falls.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/1-1741994235159.png">As our West Coast system ejects into the Plains, widespread fire danger will spread from the Southern Plains into the Great Lakes. The highest fire threat will exist over North Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas! It is super important to avoid anything that can cause a spark. If a fire does develop, it can easily spread with the very breezy conditions in the forecast. Friday's overnight fire risk remains a level 3 out of 3, an extreme risk. These risks are uncommon and typically denote the chance for wildfires that could spread too quickly to contain. If you're in the pink shade (below ) - review our wildfire safety plan and consider putting a "go bag" together with essentials in case you need to evacuate.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/OVERNIGGHGH 2-1742003169186.png">As with any day, be vigilant not to do anything that could cause a spark or a flame. If an evacuation order is issued for your area, heed it. Any grass fire could exhibit erratic behavior this afternoon.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-12 063235-1741782858153.jpg">

Strong Winds Ignite Wildfire Concerns

Our system has emerged in the plains and is intensifying into Friday night. By Saturday morning, temperatures will cool off enough to change the rain over to snow from west to east.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/blizzzzy-1742002537075.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>However, the amount of wind energy with this system, and any snowfall will drastically reduce visibility, making the conditions even more treacherous. Is this going to be a snowstorm that breaks the bank? No. This will be more about the winds than anything. Snowfall amounts might be lucky to get to 6" by the time this system moves east.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/1-1741977874511.png">Winter alerts are now in place including Blizzard Warnings for portions of the Interstate 29 corridor. Snow will begin later tonight as the colder air reaches the moisture from the east.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/1-1741994639675.png">Regardless of whether or not this makes it to the blizzard warning criteria, blowing snow WILL be a problem on Saturday - make travel plans accordingly.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-14 105406-1741971751413.jpg">The other complicating factor is how much of a wintry mix will be part of the equation. Some models have a harder time changing the rain over to snow completely, leaving a mix of freezing rain and sleet to fall for a longer period of time. That too could have an impact on the roads throughout the day.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-14 110218-1741971746674.jpg">If this system stays too warm, that wouldn't be the first time the Upper Midwest has been left high and dry this winter. Most locations north of Kansas and Missouri are having some of their worst winters (with regard to snowfall) on record<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-14 110325-1741971885358.jpg">

Potential Blizzard Moves Through Upper Midwest

Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

Hopefully you could sneak outside in the wee hours of Friday morning to catch a glimpse of the Lunar Eclipse! It was the last one for North America until 2029. Fear not, we've got you covered. It will be the last for North America until 2029!<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/VON_031325_RSE_BOCA RATON,FL_BLOOD MOON VIEWED FROM FLORIDA LATE THURSDAY NIGHT_STORYFUL_DO_E031425-1741948020145.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1> WHAT HAPPENED</h1> The eclipse happened very late Thursday night - technically Friday morning since totality started after midnight on the East Coast. As the moon moved into the umbra or the darkest shadow cast by the earth, it turned a deep red hue. Starting around 1 AM ET the red color became much more noticeable around 2 am, with totality or the complete blood moon look, happening between 2:26 am and 3:31 am ET.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/2025-03-08 08-28-36-1741448546607.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Here's a look at how the moon changed from its classic white to dark red as it moved across Earth's shadow. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-08 084030-1741448509493.png">The eclipse was a "total" lunar eclipse because it passed through the darkest portion of Earth's shadow, known as the umbra. While this earth's shadow is always present, it isn't too often that the moon moves directly through the darkest part.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-08 085447-1741449297753.png">During a partial lunar eclipse, the "umbra", or earth's hard shadow, doesn't fully cover the moon, only a portion. During a penumbral lunar eclipse, the Earth only passes through the "soft" shadow of the moon, with the umbra completely missing the lunar surface.

Thursday, it was another active day across California with more rainfall and snowfall. Along with the rain came chances for severe weather. Wind gusts got up to 80 mph at Lucerne Valley in California. There was even a tornado in Los Angeles county. At 3:15 am Thursday an EF-0 tornado touchdown in Pico Rivera. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/1-1741921707350.png">Forecast TimingWith the next system moving onshore and through California on Friday, additional heavy rainfall and snow are in the forecast. This next system will again bring rain to southern California, but this time no flood watches are in place. The rest of the state can also expect rain and high-elevation snowfall. Models are depicting the heaviest precipitation on Friday from roughly daybreak and into early afternoon hours.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/2025-03-14 11-00-41-1741971691736.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Snowfall Forecast</h2>Despite recent storms, California's snowpack remains below average (about 81% of normal), with the Northern Sierra seeing the most rainfall Northern Sierra at 95%. The Central and Southern Sierra could benefit from the snowfall coming on Friday, with Central Sierra at 75%, and the Southern Sierra at 76%.The National Weather Service has issued Winter Weather Alerts for an additional one to two feet of snow into Saturday.&nbsp; <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-14 110149-1741971726966.png">Along the coast, there will be more storms rainfall totals over an inch or two. Another Round of Rain & Snow for California on Friday

FOUR CORNERS - The same system that has been bringing rain and heavy snow in California, Oregon, and Nevada is now moving through the Four Corners to bring snow to ski country. Rain and snow have worked into Utah earlier Thursday morning, and snow is expected to fill in across the Rockies of Colorado through Friday morning. It is not until later Friday morning that the snow could move to the lower elevations. Forecast models are still keeping most of the snow to the higher elevations at this time.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/cornerssnow-1741922547478.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Snowfall totals through the end of Saturday do not look to be overly impressive for our lower-elevation locations, but the mountains, especially the San Juans and through the Mogollon Rim, will get a decent enough amount for skiers and snowboarders to be happy.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-13 212321-1741922619892.png">Winter alerts are filling in across the Four Corners, but according to the Winter Storm Severity Index (WSSI), northern Arizona will be one of the locations that reach the "major" impact level on a scale of limited, minor, moderate, major, and extreme. This includes Flagstaff through Whiteriver along the Mogollon Rim.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-13 212356-1741922641639.png">Windy conditions will be a problem over the next several days with gusts exceeding 50 mph at times!<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/wind-1741922707554.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Be sure to catch more at :50 past the hour for your western regional forecast.

More Snow on the Way for Ski Country

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. Scattered severe thunderstorms capable of producing very large hail and severe wind gusts are our primary hazards.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-12 211244-1741835626844.png">The risk of severe storms through tonight is due to a shortwave from California that was<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/weekend-rain-snow-for-the-west"> responsible for rainfall in southern California.</a><h2>Forecast Timing</h2>Storms have moved quickly ahead of a cold front and are expected to head east as a complex of storms overnight and into Thursday. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/03-12 hrrr through thursday-1741835697532.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>This shortwave will progress east into Alabama by Thursday before wrapping up.
