Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. NORTHERN PLAINS - After a powerful <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/derecho-tears-through-north-dakota-and-minnesota-friday">derecho tore through North Dakota and Minnesota Friday and into Saturday</a>, we're looking ahead to our next chance for severe weather in the same areas. <h2>Forecast Set-Up</h2>Another upper-level trough is expected to sweep across the Plains and into the Upper Midwest on Sunday. This system will bring the threat of damaging winds, large hail, and even tornadoes.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/06-21_rnc trough-1750516185249.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>At the surface, a frontal boundary colliding with intense heat and instability will provide the lift needed to support thunderstorm development.<h2><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-21 082917-1750516216669.png">Severe Outlooks</h2>On Sunday, the Storm Prediction Center has issued a SLIGHT (level 2 out of 5) risk for severe weather across portions of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Some of the same areas were impacted by Friday and Saturday morning's derecho.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-21 082102-1750516284084.png">There is a tornado risk across northern Minnesota, but there is also a significant hail and wind threat. This region highlighted is where supercells are likely to develop.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-21 082113-1750516367055.png">As this frontal boundary pushes east on Monday, the SPC has issued an additional SLIGHT (level 2 out of 5) risk for severe weather, including the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Michigan.<h2><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-21 082118-1750516398997.png">Forecast Timing</h2>Our in-house Baron model suggests storms will be slow to initiate, with most activity ramping up in the late evening and overnight hours on Sunday.By Monday, the tail end of the boundary stalls. Severe Weather Returns to Northern Plains After Friday’s Derecho

The pattern across the Northeast has been cool and rainy as of late. Many residents likely can't recall the last weekend it did not rain. But now, Mother Nature looks to flip the switch, with widespread, record-breaking heat possible heading into next week.<h2>Hot Temperatures Incoming</h2>A strong high-pressure system will build later this weekend into early next week, sending temperatures soaring. As a result, extensive heat alerts have already been issued across parts of the East Coast, with more likely to follow as we head into next week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-21 081451-1750515334618.png">Record highs are likely across the Northeast starting Sunday and lasting through at least Tuesday. Over 170 locations could tie or break records during this stretch.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-21 081435-1750515357234.png">And keep in mind—these highs in the 90s and even triple digits don’t tell the full story. With humidity factored in, heat index values will make it feel even hotter.<h2><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-21 081638-1750515404217.png">Dangerous Heat Risk</h2>This combination of heat and humidity can quickly become dangerous, especially for the elderly and vulnerable populations. The Heat Is on in the Northeast

Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. Hundreds of thousands of households are dealing with power outages Saturday morning, many are also dealing with significant tree damage, after a derecho ripped through North Dakota and Minnesota Friday night into Saturday morning. The derecho brought wind gusts of 70 -105 mph to the region spanning over 400 miles, producing an impressive shelf cloud along it's leading edge (video below).<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1936265319775191439" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1936265319775191439"></div><h2>What is a derecho?</h2><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-21 053614-1750505847380.png">A derecho is a long-lived severe wind event, with specific criteria about the length and width of the damaging wind swath. The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.spc.noaa.gov/misc/AbtDerechos/derechofacts.htm">SPC has a detailed page</a> dedicated to these destructive wind storms. Several typically occur each year, through they can vary in intensity and area. A notable <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/one-year-ago-the-midwest-derecho">derecho ripped through Des Moines in 2020</a>, producing hurricane force winds and widespread damage.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/2025-06-21 05-35-48-1750505871964.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>All criteria appear to have been met Friday night and Saturday morning to classify this event as a derecho. Regardless, widespread wind damage has been reported with many trees and powerlines down. Several tornadoes did occur in addition to the straight-line winds. <h2>Reports</h2>Wind gusts in North Dakota and Minnesota (as well as northern South Dakota) were impressive, many over hurricane strength. A wake-low also developed behind the leading edge, producing severe strength winds (58+ mph) in some locations for over an hour! <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-21 053620-1750505847379.png">Bemidji, Minnesota was hit particularly hard in the overnight hours as a intense bout of winds moved through the area, with a tornado potentially embedded in the circulation. The Bemidji Regional Airport reported a gust to 106 mph, with widespread damage reported in the area.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-21 053627-1750505847378.png">The widely spanning severe winds have left hundreds of thousands of households in the dark as of Saturday morning, with some counties reporting well over 60-60% of customers without power. Derecho Tears Through North Dakota and Minnesota Friday

Naturally, it will be the first official day of Summer, so I guess we can't complain.Widespread heat alerts are now in effect through next week from Colorado out to Chicago and St. Louis.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-21 063838-1750509526003.png">While temperatures will be hot, the heat index is what's leading to most of the heat alerts across the region. Heat index (feels like temperature) values are expected to top 105-110° in many areas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-21 063807-1750509498135.png">The strong high that is responsible for all of the heat in the southwest is on the move. As that slides northeast, it will bring the stifling heat with it.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-20 090848-1750432133490.jpg">Areas in the Central Plains will see temperatures reach well into the 90s and could feel close to 100+. Since this is the first stretch of hot weather of the season, it's important to prepare mentally ahead of time.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-20 090932-1750432178557.jpg">Try to limit any strenuous activities outdoors this weekend. It's a little ahead of schedule. Many places don't see their first 100 day until sometime in July. The early nature of this dose of heat factors into the Heat Risk (top) that tries to boil down all of the different factors going into heat waves. The 2025 Eastern Pacific hurricane season is off to a record-breaking start, with five named storms: Alvin, Barbara, Cosme, Dalila, and Erick. This level of early activity is well ahead of the seasonal average, which typically sees the first named storm by June 10, the second by June 24, and the third by July 6. Dalila forming on the 13th marked the fastest four storms to be named in the basin since record keeping began, beating 1974, which saw Dolores form by the 14th of June.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-20 051607-1750418474627.jpg">Now, there is a new area of concern in the Eastern Pacific. An area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms has roughly a 40 percent chance of development within the next 7 days. This area is currently located offshore of Central America and Southern Mexico.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-21 045123-1750503092710.jpg"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-21 045203-1750503128386.jpg">Backtracking just a bit to Erick, its remanent moisture is expected to move into the United States. This will have a profound impact on New Mexico, with bringing rainfall into the region. New Mexico has been extremely dry and fires have been ongoing across the region. The rainfall is expected Sunday into early next week.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/2025-06-20 05-19-42-1750420578334.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>ATLANTICThe Atlantic hurricane season, which began on June 1, has remained quiet with no named storms forming so far. This lack of activity is being attributed to three key atmospheric factors: persistent wind shear, marginally warm water temperatures, and the presence of Saharan dust. &nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-29 104826-1748537463299.png">The Saharan dust, which often travels westward from Africa, can suppress tropical development by introducing dry, stable air into the atmosphere. In addition, wind shear is disrupting the organization of tropical waves and disturbances, preventing them from developing into more significant systems. While sea surface temperatures are warm enough to support storm formation, they are not as favorable as in recent years, further limiting activity.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/1-1750388233251.png">Although the Atlantic is off to a slow start, this is not unusual for June. New Tropical Threat Emerging in Eastern Pacific After Hurricane Erik's Landfall

Thursday's storms left a lot of residents in the dark across parts of the Interstate 95 region! Power crews have been working hard trying to get as many customers as possible back on board as the warm temperatures build in! If you decide to use a generator to power your home, please keep it away from windows and doors (at least 25 ft) to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.<h1>Next Round</h1>Another round of severe storms will be possible over the weekend, primarily farther north than Thursday's strongest storms. Energy from the Upper-Midwest moves through the Great Lakes late Friday, arriving in New York state on Saturday. Gusty winds are expected to be the main threat, meaning downed trees and power lines, in addition to a low-end tornado risk. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-20 091639-1750432617401.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-20 091643-1750432624603.png">The threat will continue Sunday morning as storms continue to move in from NW to SE.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/1-1750458862418.png"><h2>Forecast Timing</h2>Tonight, a few storms will try to build into Western NY and PA but they will fizzle as they move eastward! However, more severe storms will be likely on Saturday with leftover severe storms rolling out of Michigan. Major Hurricane Erick made landfall in extreme western Oaxaca, Mexico on Thursday June 19 around 5:30 am CT. Maximum sustained winds are estimated at 125 mph, with a central pressure of 950 mb.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1935664693391028289" src="https://x.com/NHC_Pacific/status/1935664693391028289"></div>Erick was a category 4 storm as it approached the southern coast of Mexico with winds maxing out at 140 mph. Erick underwent rapid intensification, a term used for storms that increase wind speeds of 35 mph in 24 hours. In 24 hours, Erick increased by 65 mph in 24 hours.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-19 050802-1750331299190.jpg">Erick is a now post tropical system as it continues to bring the threat of more flash flooding and mudslides in Mexico! First the snow and ice, and then the cold - a one, two winter punch is headed into the South and Southeast. Freeze Warnings have been issued from Texas to Florida as temperatures fall below freezing all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.
