The Southeast can not seem to shake the storms over the last few days! Since last Monday, there have been stormy conditions, even bringing some small hail across the Sunshine State. On Saturday, strong storms spun onshore in Florida, leading to some damage—that damage has yet to be surveyed.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1921339468071543250" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1921339468071543250"></div>Florida’s rainy season brings afternoon downpours, rumbling thunderstorms, and the occasional flash flood each year. Understanding this seasonal shift is especially important to visitors due to how energetic these storms can be&nbsp;(Hello, lightning). Unfortunately, these storms could be packing a punch the next few days, and not just in FloridaTHROUGH MONDAYThe primary concerns are storms through Monday capable of producing large hail and gusty winds. However, a few tornadoes will be possible again.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-12 124901-1747075751782.png">The threat for severe weather continues through Monday as the upper-level low and surface trough meander through the region. Severe Threat Continues in the Southeast

An upper-level low will meander around the Gulf this weekend, sending rounds of showers and thunderstorms into the Southeast with increasing flood potential.<h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-10 053914-1746877163953.png">Amounts</h1>As we head into the work week, as this large upper low over the Lower Mississippi Valley lingers, heavy rainfall could measure up to 3-6" with isolated totals even higher than that. The Weather Prediction Center is highlighting the heaviest along the Southeast Atlantic coast, from St. Simons Island up to Wilmington, NC.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-12 122444-1747074300970.png">In fact, the Weather Prediction Center has upgraded areas in South Florida to a MODERATE risk for seeing excessive rainfall today (above).<h1>Timing</h1>It was a wet Mother's Day in the southeast due to an area of low pressure. This low is still lingering, and the flood threat will continue over the next few days.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/0512-1747060440139.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>So, When Is Florida’s Rainy Season Usually?&nbsp;Florida’s rainy season typically runs from late May through mid-October, aligning closely with the Atlantic hurricane season. During this time, the state receives nearly 70% of its annual rainfall (Goodbye drought), with frequent storms developing in the early afternoon and clearing by evening.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-11 061423-1746965676357.jpg">What to Expect Daily&nbsp;During the Rainy SeasonAfternoon thunderstorms are the hallmark of Florida summers. Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. NORTHERN PLAINS - Temperatures were incredibly warm on Mother's Day across the Northern Plains. We had May temperatures reach the HIGH NINETIES for some, including record high temperatures broken across cities, including Grand Forks, ND, which soared to 99° on Sunday afternoon.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/more records today-1747005988499.png">Fire weather alerts remain through Monday for portions of the Northern Plains. We have seen a combination of record heat, low relative humidity, and gusty winds, which has increased the fire danger.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-12 123436-1747075044819.png">The record heat will continue as above-average temperatures kick off the week across the Northern Plains. Cities that normally average 60s will dig into the upper 80s and 90s.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/hot temps mond-1747006135209.png">Today, temperatures will run 20°- 30° above average, making it feel like summer! Summertime Heat Prompts Fire Danger in the Northern Plains

We've been stuck in a pretty stagnant pattern recently. With a few cut-off lows and strong ridges of high pressure, the day-to-day pattern has struggled to change much. The trough in the Pacific Northwest will try to change that later this week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-12 124116-1747075295180.png">This trough will spark storms on the High Plains Wednesday before closing in on the Middle Mississippi River Valley late this week.<h1>OVERVIEW</h1>As this trough swings in, it will run into VERY warm temperatures. By Wednesday and Thursday, highs across the High Plains will get back to the 80's and 90's. The warm and humid air will more than likely help power strong to severe storms later this week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-11 103741-1746981482962.png">While a few ingredients look to come together sometime around Thursday, a lot can still change between now and then. HIGH PLAINS - With temperatures pushing 80-90°F across Big Sky Country, sufficient instability will be available for strong to severe thunderstorms to develop and strengthen. These storms could organize underneath strong upper-level winds. The upper-level dynamics are ahead of a significant trough that will ultimately impact the rest of the country in the days ahead.The severe weather outlook for the rest of the day is a MARGINAL (level 1 out of 5) for portions of Montana and North Dakota.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-12 124243-1747075424435.png"><h1>Timing</h1><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/05-12_rnw-1747075508827.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>By the middle of this week, expect a significant cooldown along with widespread precipitation accumulation across the western half of the country. Northern Great Plains and Rockies Storm Threat

Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

A break in storms for the Northeast is on the way this Sunday, but first, another round of heavy showers is expected. Flood Threat Lingers in New England Saturday

Hail over the size of tennis balls and baseballs fell across the Mid-South and Southeast on Thursday! The storm system responsible is heading toward the coast, where the threat will persist through this evening.<h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-09 054322-1746791009234.png">Today's Risk</h1>The threat of severe storms will follow the cold front to the coast this afternoon, with a slightly higher risk for the Outer Banks, where wind and hail damage is more likely.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-09 134214-1746819810039.png">This morning's storms have given way to some clearing before the front taps into daytime heating.
