Hurricane Erin is not expected to make direct landfall in the U.S., but dangerous conditions will still impact the eastern seaboard, including high surf and strong rip currents. Currently a Category 2 hurricane, Erin has maximum sustained winds of 110 mph and a central pressure of 941 mb. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for coastal areas of Virginia to the north.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-20 090215-1755702174322.png">Storm surge will be one of the significant impacts from Erin, as the storm pushes large swells toward the coast. Storm surge and tropical storm conditions are expected on the North Carolina Outer Banks as early as Wednesday afternoon. The large waves may cause beach erosion, and some roads could become impassable. Evacuation orders are currently in effect for both Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island. Tropical storm conditions are also likely on Thursday along the southeastern coast of Virginia. Up to 4 feet of storm surge is possible along the Carolinas' coast, accompanied by waves reaching 15 to 25 feet.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/1-1755717024576.png">Multiple tropical alerts have been issued for the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Remember, from the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCPAT5+shtml/182044.shtml">National Hurricane Center</a>:<blockquote><ul><li>Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours.</li><li>Storm Surge Watch means there is a possibility of life-threatening inundation, from rising water moving inland from the coastline, in the indicated locations during the next 48 hours.</li><li>For a depiction of areas at risk, please see the National Weather Service Storm Surge Watch/Warning Graphic, available at <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://hurricanes.gov">hurricanes.gov</a>."</li></ul></blockquote><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ad6MxSe0890" start="0"></iframe></div>Erin will continue to track Northwest and stay a Category 2, potentially re-strengthening to a major hurricane. Erin is forecast to track Northwest then turn North. The strength of the ridge of high pressure over the Atlantic will determine when Erin takes this turn northward. Jet stream energy will also help kick Erin further out into the Atlantic as a trough moves east.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/tomer erin cone-1755734156765.jpg">While most of the heavy rainfall will be over the Atlantic, the National Hurricane Center is still forecasting that parts of North Carolina could gather up 1 to 4 inches of rain in outer rainbands from Erin Wednesday night into Thursday. Flooding is a possibility, especially when factoring in the storm surge at high tide.Venturing into the water as a beachgoer is extremely dangerous along the East Coast this week. Two Additional Tropical Waves Emerge Behind Erin

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

Northeast 20 Degrees Cooler; Next Cold Front Inbound

Numerous wildfires continue to burn across the western United States, including three "Megafires," or fires burning over 100,000 acres: The Lee Wildfire, Dragon Bravo Wildfire, and Gifford Wildfire. In addition to the warm weather and dry fuels, fire spread could be accelerated in the next few days with more dry thunderstorms and gusty conditions.<h1>GIFFORD FIRE</h1>Burning as California's largest wildfire in 2025, the Gifford Fire has torched over 132k acres. The good news has been the containment numbers in recent days. It has burned over 137k acres. Most of the poor air quality has been locked up in western Colorado, fluctuating at times. This fire is likely soon to become Colorado's third-largest wildfire in state history, needing fewer than 2k additional acres to top the size of the Pine Gulch Fire, which burned during the historic 2020 season in the Centennial State.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-17 093907-1755445152104.png"><h1>DRAGON BRAVO FIRE</h1>One of the largest fires in Arizona history, the Dragon Bravo Fire, has continued to smolder along the northern rim of the Grand Canyon. Meteorologist Jesse Kelley is excited to join the talented staff at Weather Nation. Jesse spent most of his childhood in Birmingham, Alabama. The state of Alabama is prone to seeing various types of weather from severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and winter weather.
