<h1>EASTERN PACIFIC</h1>Tropical Storm Kiko formed over the holiday weekend and will continue moving westward. Eventually, the National Hurricane Center has Kiko becoming a category 2 hurricane on this journey. What happens after that is a bit of a mystery, with some eyebrow-raising models within the vicinity of Hawaii sometime beyond a week from now. Nothing that far in advance will ever be set in stone, let alone with a low-end tropical storm. It bears watching throughout the week, as questions become answers.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/tomer kiko spread-1756781802620.jpg">Tropical Depression 12E has developed off the coast of Mexico. If it strengthens into a Tropical Storm then its name will be Lorena.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/tomer 12e cone-1756781819511.jpg">TD 12E will track along the Mexican coast north to the Baja of California. What could become a real possibility, like we saw with Juliette, is that the moisture gets siphoned off and ends up in the desert southwest in some form or fashion.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/tomer sw moisture-1756782017191.jpg"><h1>Atlantic</h1>While the Pacific has taken over the short-term problems, the Atlantic basin has one wave worth watching. Primarily because it came off the coast of Africa so far south, it's hard to tell where this one will end up, but a tropical depression is possible by the end of the week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-01 160545-1756764348312.png">As we near the peak of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, one question on many minds is "Why has it been so quiet?" About two-thirds of all Atlantic hurricane activity typically occurs between August 20th and October 10th. With only a handful of named storms and only one major hurricane through late August, the sluggish pace stands in stark contrast to what many seasonal forecasts had warned would be an active year. So, what's causing the delay?<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-31 041725-1756636196549.jpg">Several key factors are at play in this slow start. First, the Main Development Region (MDR) of the tropical Atlantic, where most storms form during peak season, has been cooler than expected. While still slightly above average, it falls short of the record-breaking warmth seen in 2024. Meanwhile, waters in the subtropical Atlantic are significantly warmer, disrupting the usual energy gradient that helps fuel storm formation.Atmospheric conditions have also been unusually hostile to storms. Persistent wind shear across the Gulf and Caribbean has torn apart developing systems before they can organize. On top of that, the upper atmosphere has remained unusually warm and stable, effectively placing a lid on the kind of deep convection hurricanes need to grow. Add in frequent plumes of dry, dusty air from the Sahara, and the result is a storm-suppressing cocktail that’s kept the basin eerily calm.All it takes is one hurricane to make it a memorable season. The tropics in the Atlantic have a chance to stay active through the first week of September, heading into the second week. While a large-scale Kelvin Wave is not likely to spur activity like it has over the last two weeks, additional tropical waves could develop in the Atlantic and the Gulf/Western Caribbean. Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. NORTHERN PLAINS - Tonight, a cold front will drop in from Canada, bringing cooler weather and stormy conditions for parts of the region.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/rncv bams3k 18z-1756781728550.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Severe Outlooks</h2>The Storm Prediction Center has now issued MARGINAL risks (level 1 out of 5) for tomorrow and the day after across the Plains. This is a low end threat for storms that could produce 58+ mph winds, 1"+ hail, or an isolated tornado. The risk follows where the front will be for the next 2 days.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/tomer rnc svr tues-1756776855533.jpg"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-01 143227-1756758897464.png"><h2>Rainfall/Flood Threat</h2>Some of this rain may be heavy enough to raise flash flooding concerns, prompting the Weather Prediction Center to issue excessive rainfall outlooks for Tuesday and Wednesday. Both days carry a marginal risk (level 1 out of 4). The Storm Prediction Center is also watching these storms for damaging winds and large hail by Tuesday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-01 143341-1756758828847.png">Rainfall totals look to accumulate upwards of 2" with localized higher totals.<h2><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-01 205544-1756781752206.png">Temperatures</h2>Behind the front, temperatures will drop significantly as winds shift to the north.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/cold-1756672756256.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>For many areas, this will be the coolest air since spring, even cooler than the most recent bout of chilly temperatures. Morning lows are expected to dip into the 40s on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, with Friday likely to be the coldest morning across the Northern Plains.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/ezgif-730385c4f717ce-1756673019840.gif">In comparison to the average, these numbers are about 10-20 degrees below what is normal for early September.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-01 143607-1756758972793.png">Long range trends keep the eastern U.S. with high confidence in temperatures being below average (top image). Fall is here! Another Taste of Fall: Cooler Air and Rain for the Northern Plains

While it wasn't that long ago we were dealing with record-breaking heat across the Northwest, another heatwave is building that will be particularly intense by the middle of the first week of September. Upper-level high pressure will build in as we head through the week. As it continues to build north, the mercury will climb with it, with some areas threatening the century mark in interior Washington and Oregon!<h2>Heat Alerts</h2>Heat advisories have been issued in the western U.S. For the northwest, heat advisories last through Thursday. Hot temperatures will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, so be sure to keep cool and hydrated. Extreme heat warnings were added in Oregon and interior Washington as well.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-01 132758-1756754885304.png">In the southwest, heat advisories span as close as the Pacific Coast. Along the coast, temperatures between 90-95° are possible, and 95-105° in the valleys and hills.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-01 132718-1756754907364.png">Record highs are possible all week in Spokane, WA. In fact, on Monday, September 1st, Spokane warmed up to 99, which is a new record high.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/tomer spokane records-1756768132915.jpg"><h2>Temperatures</h2>Temperatures in southern California are likely to warm up to 95° close to the coast, and upwards of 105° farther inland.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-01 132722-1756754914791.png">Temperatures will be pushing 15 degrees above average across western Oregon, including the Willamette Valley. Even more anomalous, temperatures in the Inland NW will rise up 20 degrees above average, as locales such as Spokane, WA, will be feeling triple-digit heat.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-01 160006-1756764010554.png">While the numbers may not seem too high in the northwest, many residents in these areas do not have air conditioning. Because of this, the Willamette Valley through interior Washington will be feeling Major and Extreme heat impacts by Tuesday and Wednesday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-01 160028-1756764033621.png">Here are some good tips if you're unfortunately dealing with the heat without the benefits of air conditioning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-29 174031-1756511416611.png">

I know I know we're confusing a lot of people when we do this a few times every year. It's just a cheat code for our statistics. Instead of comparing different dates and calling them the same every year - we bust the seasons apart by the calendar, not the exact path around the sun.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-01 100252-1756742674398.png">Now, every "meteorological" season is the same. Each and every year, although the equinox will slide around depending on the year. But it got us thinking...<h1>How is the Fall Looking</h1>The Climate Prediction Center issues outlooks that span from 6-10 days to MONTHS in advance. Their outlook for the months of September - November was tweaked towards the end of August, with a large majority of the lower 48 likely warmer than average. Despite the past few weeks making us forget about how toasty it's been, this has been more of the case for much of the Summer. Some areas, like Salt Lake City and Milwaukee, have seen one of their warmest Summers on record.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-01 100946-1756742993606.png">While there is a ton of red on the map, it's also a good reminder they don't issue outlooks based on degrees above or below, but rather the confidence in the outcome. Very red means very confident, but many equate confidence to degrees above. The same argument could be made for rainfall.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-01 101016-1756743111383.png">Is this a good first guess to what the weather will be like on Halloween? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Outlooks like this are similar to the climate vs weather idea: long-term outlooks are more the personality, whereas the daily forecast is the mood. Be sure to keep up with the latest daily forecast as we iron out the details where you live, all Fall long.

Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

TEXAS - Dallas set a daily rainfall record on August 30th of 1.35" (tying the existing daily record of 1.35" set in 1991). Friday marked the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, one of the most devastating natural disasters in U.S. history. On August 29, 2005, the powerful storm made landfall along the Gulf Coast, leaving behind a humanitarian crisis that would forever change New Orleans and the surrounding communities. Two decades later, the memory of Katrina still resonates deeply with survivors, first responders, and all who witnessed the destruction.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-29 082444-1756477525621.png">Katrina began as a tropical storm over the Bahamas on August 23 and quickly strengthened into a massive Category 5 hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico. It made landfall in South Florida as a Category 1 hurricane before moving into the Gulf. By the time it struck near Buras, Louisiana, on August 29, it had slightly weakened to a Category 3, but still packed winds of 125 mph and an unprecedented storm surge. The storm battered coastal areas of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, causing widespread damage and flooding.&nbsp;<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/082725_PKG_TRT_4.09_JOSH WITH MISSISSIPPI RESIDENTS TALKING ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF KATRINA_NJ-1756463476792.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>New Orleans bore the brunt of the disaster. However, it was not from wind, but from storm surge and catastrophic levee failures. About 80% of the city was submerged, with some neighborhoods under more than 10 feet of water. Tens of thousands of people were trapped without food, water, or medical care. The scenes of stranded families on rooftops and desperate conditions inside the Superdome shocked the world.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot%202025-08-29%20042812-1756463302396.jpg">In total, Hurricane Katrina claimed over 1,800 lives and displaced more than a million people. The economic impact was equally staggering, with damage estimated at over $125 billion. Entire communities, were devastated, many of which still struggle with the long-term effects today.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-29 042839-1756463328273.jpg">Twenty years later, Hurricane Katrina remains a defining moment in American history. Hurricane Katrina: Remembering the Devastation, 20 Years Later

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

Conditions in the Northwest have been hot and dry. The Flat Fire began on August 21st near Sisters, OR, and has grown to over 23,000 acres (above).There is a risk for isolated dry thunderstorms (with lightning and wind but very little rainfall) through tonight across the Northwest. In other words, conditions are still dry at the surface, and with thunderstorms that form, the lightning can spark another fire.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/PIC 1-1756427699221.jpg">Monsoonal moisture will be moving into the region, bringing some areas of relief, but also bringing flooding threats.An inch or two of additional rainfall is possible here through the overnight hours.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/PIC 1-1756427666701.jpg">The bulk of the rain will slow overnight, although some of it will continue the next couple of days into the interior.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/FORECAST-1756427594796.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>More details can be found during your Western Regional Forecast :50 past the hour on WeatherNation.
