Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

<h1>Tropical Storm Erin</h1><p>Tropical Storm Erin was announced Monday morning by the National Hurricane Center.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1954950945181405214" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1954950945181405214"></div><p>A well-defined area of low pressure is now moving west of the Cabo Verde Islands. With winds up to 45 mph, the <strong>National Hurricane Center</strong> has named this system <strong>Tropical Storm Erin</strong>. Erin should expect modest intensity growth through midweek as it quickly moves west across the Atlantic. Right now, the cone of uncertainty has Erin increasing to a Category 3 hurricane by this weekend.</p><h2><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-12 084852-1755010138112.png">Forecast Factors</h2><p>The ridge of high pressure over the Atlantic will be a big influence on Erin's path forward.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-12 080107-1755007275941.png">Models keep the center of circulation strong on this system despite the dry air, though it may be more of a struggle than the model below depicts (GFS). The dry air should thin some during the mid-week time frame as the wave moves toward the Caribbean.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/0812-1755007406697.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h3>Is this coming to the United States?</h3><p>Still too soon to know - what it looks like after formation will be telling, along with the couple of steering features towards the end of the week. Still a good chance that this doesn't affect any land masses directly, but not a guarantee. This would be a good week to fill any holes in your hurricane prep plan. Erin Forecast to Become a Hurricane

<p style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt; color: #454545;">Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

One of the most prolific meteor showers of the year will peak during the upcoming week.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/TOMER PERSEID-1754872084317.jpg"></p><p>The Perseid Meteor Shower typically reaches a peak during the second week of August as the Earth moves through the debris field left by Comet Swift-Tuttle, which makes a trip through the solar system once every 133 years, last visiting the inner-solar system in 1992. Debris left by the comet dives through the Earth's atmosphere to create the beautiful meteor shower we expect. <br><br>2025 isn't expected to be the best year to see the meteors, unfortunately, as the waning gibbous moon will rise in the evening, washing out any faint meteors that may have been seen under a new moon. Ideal conditions can produce 50-100 meteors per hour, but with the brightness from the moon, expect 20-50 under dark skies away from city lights.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-10 052401-1754829026071.png"></p><h2>A Pair of Planets</h2><p>Another fun astronomical event will be gracing the morning skies through much of this week - the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter!</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/TOMER PERSIED 2-1754872142561.jpg"></p><p>These planets will appear to be right next to each other in the morning sky, even through they're still millions of miles apart! <p>It's been a hot and dry stretch out west. Basically anytime the winds have kicked up, the wildfire risk has followed suit. After just about a month of fire weather concerns, numerous fires have erupted and continue to burn. </p><p></p><h1>GIFFORD FIRE</h1><p>Burning as California's largest wildfire in 2025, the Gifford Fire has torched over 122k acres. The good news has been the containment numbers in recent days. Most of the poor air quality has been locked up around Grand Junction, fluctuating at times. </p><h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-12 102025-1755015635319.jpg">DRAGON BRAVO FIRE</h1><p>One of the largest fires in Arizona history, the Dragon Bravo Fire, has continued to smolder along the Northern Rim of the Grand Canyon. It has burned more than 140,000 acres, making it the 7th largest in state history. </p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1953931727044223408" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1953931727044223408"></div><p></p><p>Another fire that has cropped up in the last few days was the Billy Fire which is burning northeast of Phoenix. That is burning in Tonto National Forest after being ignited by lightning on August 11.</p><h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-12 101549-1755016291901.jpg">FORECAST</h1><p>Wednesday looks like it'll be the most concerning day of the next few. A trough will push a cold front through part of the West Coast. That front will kick up winds, AND turn them out of the west. <p>The long-range temperature trend towards the end of August shows higher confidence that temperatures will remain above average. Even this week temperatures are really feeling the summertime heat.</p><h2>West Coast</h2><p>Widespread heat alerts are in place for the Pacific Northwest through Northern California. Temperatures will remain 10-15° above average through Tuesday.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-12 052831-1754998120697.jpg"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-11 160937-1754950335143.png">Temperatures through Southern California will also be hot compared to normal. Feeling the August Heat from Coast to Coast

<p>Flash flooding continues to hit the Southeast hard - especially Florida. A trough of low pressure is still spinning in parts of the southeast, keeping the rain chances nearby. A stationary storm sat and rained over the same spot, on Sanibel Island, for much of Sunday morning (8/10). That efficient tropical rain added up to over a foot of rain by the time the weekend was done. Florida is normally a tad more resilient to fresh water flooding, but nowhere can handle that much rain. Strong Storms Across the Plains Monday night

<p>While Hurricane Milton was approaching Tampa Bay and Sarasota on Wednesday, tornadoes were tearing across the eastern part of Florida. A distance of 200 miles away from the storm's center, many Floridians found themselves seeking shelter in the path of numerous tornado warnings.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1844129430874267922" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1844129430874267922"></div><p>Tornado reports are slowly starting to trickle in from different weather service offices in Florida. Let's start in Fort Pierce. The above VIDEO was an EF-3 tornado with winds of 155 mph. This tornado sadly claimed the lives of several people on Wednesday. The next report (below) is from the Palm Beach Gardens and Wellington, FL area.
