The next severe weather system is developing with impacts expected across the Plains and Midwest Sunday through Tuesday. A strong trough of low pressure will move east of the Rockies on Sunday, spurring the development of a surface low and cold front. A potent shortwave will eject from the Rockies Sunday before the larger trough takes over <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/severe-storms-to-start-the-week-in-the-midwest">Monday into Tuesday</a>. May is the busiest month of the year for severe weather, with most storms setting up over the Great Plains of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and northern Texas. Already, 2024 has been one of the busiest severe weather seasons with the second-most tornadoes on record to date (2011 still holds the record).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/spc-1716133263526.jpg">On Sunday, a MODERATE risk (level 4 out of 5) has been issued for portions of Kansas, while the larger risk for more isolated severe storms stretches from Texas to North Dakota. Damaging winds are expected to be the most likely hazard (gusts 58+ mph), but large hail (2"+ in diameter) and a few tornadoes are possible.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/hail-1716133365607.jpg">Kansas will have multiple hazards to deal with on Sunday, including the chance for hail over the size of golf balls and gusts that could top hurricane strength (74+ mph). A few tornadoes are also favored in central Kansas and northern Oklahoma (below).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Tornado potential-1716113459585.jpg">Scattered storms are expected to initiate along and east of the dry line (brown pipped line) south of the low Sunday afternoon. Thanks to a stubborn and slow-moving low-pressure system, scattered strong/severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are possible on Sunday, with fewer storms expected Monday after the low moves offshore.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/spc day 1-1716138813460.jpg">Storms and showers start our Sunday for some, but they become much more active towards the afternoon and evening. It's these storms that pose more of a threat for packing a punch. Stay weather-aware today and be prepared to change any outdoor plans at a moment's notice.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/forecast-1716133535129.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The severe threat is marginal and slight so any storms that develop along the cold front could produce some isolated gusty winds and large hail. An isolated tornado or two can't be ruled out either! Weekend Severe Risk for the Southeast

Temperatures have been toasty in Florida over the past couple of weeks and this week shows no sign of relief in the Sunshine State. Storm chances this afternoon, even <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/Saturday%20Severe%20Risk%20for%20the%20Southeast">posing a severe threat</a>, might be a welcomed reprieve from the sultry conditions. When combined with humidity, temperatures will feel more like the upper 90s and 100s. This is not just impacting Florida - the western Gulf and southern Texas are also dealing with intense heat index values.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/1-1716087597999.png">For those without power following severe weather in Houston late last week, the heat could be dangerous - try to seek cool spaces, take it easy when cleaning up damage, and stay hydrated.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/high temps-1716139087969.jpg">Temperatures will be so warm in the Southeast that they classify as "EXTREME" under <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/noaa-debuts-heatrisk-tool-nationwide">NOAA's experimental HeatRisk tool</a> which helps to quantify heat based on historical averages and overnight lows. The heat won't be as widespread on Sunday as it was on Saturday, but it will still be a major impact in much of South Florida.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Heat risk day 1-1716119674093.jpg">Temperatures stay warm to finish off the weekend and the start of the week with highs in the 80s and 90s throughout the Gulf Coast. The southern tier of the U.S. is jumping right into summer ahead of the unofficial start on Memorial Day. Temps in far south Texas and Florida will be warm enough to tie or break records too.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/high temps-1716139128129.jpg">

Another Record Scorcher in Florida This Weekend

As we inch closer to Summer, severe storms become more likely across more northern latitudes in the United States, where the jet stream and cooler air are located. Strong storms will continue to target the Plains and Midwest on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday following a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/moderate-risk-for-severe-storms-sunday">moderate risk on Sunday.</a>The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a slight risk (level 2 out of 5) for Monday, and an enhanced risk (level 3 out of 5) for Tuesday. Keep in mind, when severe weather outlooks are issued several days in advance, it means confidence is high in the severe weather threat, and outlooks may still be upgraded (or downgraded) before storms fire off.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/spc-1716139293046.jpg">Monday's risk (above) calls for scattered severe storms from central Kansas into central Iowa, with isolated severe storms as far east as the mitten of Michigan. Tuesday's risk (below) calls for severe storms from Oklahoma to western Michigan, with numerous/widespread severe storms from eastern Kansas into southwestern Wisconsin.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/spc day 3-1716116245456.png">As Sunday's low moves east through the Great Lakes, a second, stronger low-pressure system develops and strengthens late Monday from Wyoming into the Plains. Timing of the ejection of this low may lead to late development of storms on Monday, with most storms likely after sunset or even later in the overnight. As the low moves east Tuesday, more widespread severe weather is expected through the Midwest.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-19 05-00-30-1716116454408.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Wednesday brings a threat for strong storms over a large area, reaching from San Angelo, TX to the northeast into Detriot, MI. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/spc day 4-1716116523101.png">Flooding will be possible, though it currently doesn't look to be an elevated threat. Isolated flooding is likely where multiple thunderstorms train over the same location. Posing the risk for 3-5"+ of rain in some spots.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/forecast precip-1716116596675.png">Stay up to date on the latest forecast with this system, as outlooks and timing will still change.

Severe Storms to Start the Week in the Central U.S.

Despite Thursday being over half a week away, the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has preemptively issued a chance for strong storms in parts of Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana.Related article: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/severe-storms-to-start-the-week-in-the-midwest">Severe Storms to Start the Week in the Midwest</a>The right ingredients will be present in the atmosphere for increased instability, heightening the threat of strong storms (see above).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/spc-1716133823290.jpg">The timing and the exact severe threats are yet to be fine-tuned and determined. A potent weather system has dropped severe hail across Wisconsin on Saturday, along with strong wind gusts. The largest hailstone grew up to the size of limes in parts of the Badger and Wolverine States. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/1-1716087764874.png">There will be a short window for severe thunderstorm potential in the Upper Midwest Saturday evening. The severe weather threat should diminish between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. local time Saturday night to Sunday morning. Strong storms slammed the Houston metro on Thursday night, with widespread damage through downtown. On Friday afternoon the National Weather Service Office in Houston confirmed an EF-1 tornado in Cypress, TX (a suburb of Houston) along with straight-line wind damage in downtown Houston with peak winds over 100 mph. NWS also confirmed this was a "derecho" or long-track wind event that hit the city of Houston. According to the NOAA, a derecho is defined when a "swath of wind damage extends at least 400 miles (about 650 kilometers), is at least 60 miles (about 100 km) wide, includes wind gusts of at least 58 mph (93 km/h) along most of its length, and also includes several, well-separated 75 mph (121 km/h) or greater gusts."<div class="fb-post" data-href="https://www.facebook.com/WeatherNation/videos/1520213955507973" data-width="500" src="https://www.facebook.com/WeatherNation/videos/1520213955507973" style="display: flex; justify-content: center"></div>Thousands of windows were blown out in Downtown Houston from the pressure differences and debris. Emergency officials urged people to avoid driving due to damage throughout the area.Not only was severe weather a huge threat, but widespread heavy rain led to widespread flooding in east Texas and Louisiana. Winds Over 100 Mph Hit Houston Thursday Night

The waves breached a seawall in Scituate, Massachusetts, on Thursday, January 4, as a powerful Nor’easter battered the East Coast.

The National Guard was dispatched to the area as the water poured over the seawall, flooding area streets with icy sea water, <a href="http://boston.cbslocal.com/2018/01/04/scituate-warning-against-ice-shrapnel-off-beach/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a news report said</a>. Those living along the shore had already been asked to evacuate.

Not far from Scituate, Brant Rock also saw storm surge during the winter storm.

Firefighters and the National Guard responded to two rescues in Brant Rock, <a href="http://marshfield.wickedlocal.com/news/20180104/brant-rock-flooding-leads-to-two-rescues/1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to a news report</a>. People living along Massachusetts south shore were encouraged to evacuate ahead of the storm, which affected most of the east coast.
