Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

CALIFORNIA - Rain and snow graced the state of California on Wednesday, bringing snowfall totals up to 17" in spots like Mammoth, rainfall totals up to nearly 2" south of the Bay Area, and wind gusts upwards of 80 mph. Precipitation is ending from this first wave of low pressure, but another round with heavier rain and snow is expected to start to bring impacts to the Golden State on Sunday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-11 192147-1770862922838.png">Our next system will take a few days before it arrives, leading to some time to dry out. ROCKIES - As our behemoth of a trough moves onshore, it's ushering in a new era of weather that we haven't seen in a few weeks. The next round of moisture moves in for Friday as a few Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for parts of New Mexico.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1770942228738.png"> Snow will be possible in some form or fashion through the rest of the week, with Friday looking like the next "big" push in the high country.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/New Baron Video 3-1770942309426.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Snowfall amounts will be measured in the feet, which could help put a dent in the sizeable deficit facing many states (above). By the time Saturday rolls around, many areas will at least pick up 12 inches, with much more possible. Travel will be treacherous, especially going up to the ski resorts over the next few days.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1770942361303.png">

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. SOUTH - As we end the work week, heavy rain will begin to target Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and the southern Plains before pushing east of the Mississippi River by the end of the weekend.<h2>Forecast Timing</h2>On Friday, rain will begin moving into portions of Texas and the South as a frontal boundary approaches. By evening, some stronger storms are likely to develop. These storms will continue moving with the surface front through the weekend. By Saturday morning, the front will still not have cleared the I-35 corridor, meaning some spots in Texas and Oklahoma may become susceptible to flooding. By Saturday night, storms will start to organize along the frontal boundary and push eastward. It won't be until Sunday that these storms move east of the Mississippi River Valley and into the Deep South, potentially disrupting weekend plans.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/New Baron Video 3-1770952791251.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Severe Threat</h2>For Friday, the Storm Prediction Center issued a MARGINAL (Level 1 of 5) risk for severe weather across portions of southwest Texas and into western Oklahoma. As afternoon temperatures reach the 70s and low 80s and moisture increases, there will be a threat for some strong thunderstorms in the area. The marginal risk, rather than a higher category, is due to weak atmospheric capping, which may limit storm development and keep storms from significantly strengthening. A marginal risk has also been issued for Saturday as the cold front pushes across Texas and the South.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-12 124011-1770925255813.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-12 124255-1770925382753.png"><h2>Flooding Threat</h2>Current forecast models show localized areas receiving 3-5 inches of rainfall, with isolated higher totals possible.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1770952827505.png">The Weather Prediction Center has issued a SLIGHT RISK for heavy rainfall across portions of Arkansas on Saturday, which may lead to flash flooding. Strong Storms and Heavy Rain Headed for Texas and the South

It has been a tale of two halves of the country so far this winter. In the West, temperatures have been extremely warm, while the East feels the repetitive shots of cold air, fresh from the Canadian Arctic. Now, as our pattern begins to shift, many people will feel the shift from bitterly cold temperatures to a more spring-like feel. We did see a record fall in Valley, NE with a high of 57°.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1770952955613.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1770952988405.png">Upper-level high pressure will strengthen and build northward as we wrap up the week. This will begin to shove the arctic air back to the north and allow a significant warm-up from the Gulf to the Canadian border.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1770953044385.png">Cities such as Sioux Falls and Minneapolis, which have been feeling temperatures well below 0° at times this year, will suddenly feel temperatures that are more typical of April.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-12 122127-1770924817036.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-12 121604-1770924817040.png">With daytime highs that will push 30° above-average, record highs will be possible from Friday through Monday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-12 122252-1770924860066.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-12 122300-1770924860063.png">The southern Plains will also be feeling the anomalous warmth, helping to increase the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/active-weather-weekend-ahead">severe weather threat</a> there over the next couple of days. Confidence is very high in spring-like warmth sticking around as we head deeper into February. The chance for thunderstorms in a more spring-like pattern will continue along with it!

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

NORTHEAST - As this next clipper system continues through, we can see snow and some lake-effect snow. A high-pressure system will move in, and things will taper off on Thursday night.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/02-11_rne-1770838643023.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>When all is said and done, the heaviest snow ends up in upstate New York and most of the New England area. With a few of these lake effect bands cranking well into late week, we can see some totals top out at 6"!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-11 123841-1770838732760.png">But what about those temps after the fact? Well, judging by the Climate Prediction Center's (CPC) 6-10 day outlook, we're likely to continue with these above-average temperatures even after Valentine's Day weekend. Lingering Snow in the Northeast

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

It was another cold morning on Monday across the Northeast. Many cities across the Northeast hit below zero for the air temperature! Dubois, PA broke its record low temperature for the morning, getting down to -9°.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 081947-1770650390845.png">There will be some improvement with overnight lows getting closer to seasonal by midweek.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 174938-1770684583296.png"><h1>Where does this year's cold rank?</h1>While it has been a cold winter, many colder winters have occurred in the history of weather observations in the Eastern U.S. Most of these areas have weather data dating back to the 1800s, so ranking in the bottom half or even bottom quarter is still impressive.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-06 094753-1770397848980.png">As we look ahead, temperatures will remain below average. Cold Air Remains Across the Northeast

It was a hot day on Monday, February 9th in the Central Plains with many locations breaking record high temperatures for this date in time. Some of these locations include spots like Sioux City, Iowa, which not only broke a daily record high, but they also had their warmest temperatures this early in the year.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 174203-1770684273700.png">Temperatures are expected to drop on Tuesday but they'll still be above-average across the northern Plains.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 135952-1770671000646.png">The warming temperatures will mean impacts from melting snow and ice, particularly where ice jams become a hazard. A flood watch remains in effect for eastern Nebraska for ice jam flood potential.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 140356-1770671044246.png">Another side-effect of the warmer weather is wildfire concerns. As winds kick up to 20-30 mph, areas of eastern New Mexico and the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas need to be mindful of grass fire ignitions. Anything that gets going could spread quickly, as dry as this area has been recently. Record Heat Across the Central U.S.

The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://science.nasa.gov/solar-system/meteors-meteorites/perseids/">best meteor shower of the year</a> is expected to peak this weekend! The Perseid meteor shower often producers high numbers of meteors and coincides with warm to mild temperatures, making it one of the most satisfying to take in.2024 shouldn't be an exception as the waxing crescent moon will set early enough to allow for excellent conditions.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/08/Screenshot 2024-08-10 113148-1723311247808.png">The peak this year is expected Sunday night into Monday morning, with the best conditions before sunrise on Monday the 12th. Over 50 meteors an hour could be visible under ideal conditions. To reach ideal conditions, find a place far from city lights (light pollution) and give yourself plenty of time to watch. It typically takes 15-20 minutes for eyes to fully adjust to the darkness. Meteors will appear to originate in the Northeast, near the constellation Perseus (hence the name), but try to watch as much of the sky as possible. Bring a lawn chair and some refreshments to make yourself comfortable (bug spray too!).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/08/Screenshot 2024-08-10 105518-1723308964726.png">Cloud cover may be an issue for some areas in the Midwest, but the South and West Coast look favorable for clear skies.
