<h1>TROPICAL DEPRESSION MOKE</h1><p>Just a little over a week after Hurricane Lala impacted Hawaii, another system has formed in the Central Pacific. Moke has weakened from a tropical storm to a depression, with sustained winds down to 35 mph as of Monday morning. </p><p>Moke is moving at a steady pace to the north-northwest. This storm is expected to bring gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall to Hawaii. A ridge of high pressure will continue to steer it west and away from the islands. Any lingering impacts will decrease after today. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-24 035657-1787565430504.png">Heavy rainfall is the greater threat. Moke is expected to produce 3-6 inches of rainfall, and the Big Island can see isolated totals of 12"+ of rainfall. With little room for additional rainfall right now, a flood watch has been issued. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-23 124048-1787510458480.png"></p><h1>HURRICANE LALA</h1><p>While Lala did not make a direct landfall on the Hawaiian Islands, it still brought significant impacts. The Hawaii Department of Transportation reported that parts of Highway 11 on the Big Island were shut down due to flooding. More than 130,000 customers lost power Saturday at the height of the storm. Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. <p>In addition to the hot temperatures across the Southeastern United States, there is an increasing threat of severe thunderstorms as we head into the week.</p><h2>Severe Outlooks</h2><p>On Monday, the SPC has upgraded portions of Coastal Carolina, Mississippi, and Louisiana to a <strong>SLIGHT</strong> (level 2 out of 5) risk for severe weather. The main threat will be isolated damaging winds and severe gusts, with a lower threat for hail and a tornado or two across both areas.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-24 035122-1787565097243.png"></p><p>On Tuesday, there is a <strong>MARGINAL</strong> (level 1 out of 5) risk for severe storms along portions of the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, from eastern Louisiana through southwestern South Carolina. Storms are expected to be more isolated in nature, developing within a moist air mass near the Gulf Coast. The main threat will once again be isolated damaging winds.</p><h2><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-24 035244-1787565177583.png">Timeline</h2><p>Storms along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts will favor the afternoon hours through Tuesday, when surface temperatures are at their highest. By Wednesday, we're watching the next front that is expected to push through the region. Rounds of Storms for the Southeast

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

<p>Record-high temperatures broke today in the Southwest; Las Vegas tied a record, hitting 110°!</p><p>High pressure has returned to the Desert Southwest. <strong>Extreme Heat Warnings </strong>(in pink) have been issued for cities including Phoenix, Las Vegas, Tucson, and Yuma. <strong>Heat Advisories </strong>(in orange) have been issued across the Inland Empire of California and around Salt Lake City.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-24 034754-1787564892389.png">We started the week with plenty of triple digits across the Southwest, even Los Angeles is getting close to the century mark by midweek.</p><h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-24 034825-1787564929748.png">Storm Threat</h1><p>Isolated flash flooding will be possible each afternoon for areas that can see storms develop, which will be most of the Four Corners region. The Aspen Acres burn scar is under threat of flash flooding and debris flows through Monday, and potentially be extended through Tuesday.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-24 034911-1787564968103.png">There could also be some windy storms into Southern Arizona. Heat and Storms for the Southwest the Next Few Days

<p>El Niño has been smothering tropical waves in the Atlantic this summer, with three named storms to date but only 16% of average cyclone energy! This doesn't mean the rest of the season will be just as quiet, however, as 66% of all hurricane activity in the Atlantic occurs between August 20th and October 10th.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-23 032445-1787477089898.png">Right on cue, we are seeing 2 areas of potential development in the Atlantic Basin. A tropical wave moving off Africa in the days ahead may have a better chance to get its act together this week as it moves across the MDR (main development region) in the Atlantic, between Africa and the Caribbean. There is a <strong>medium</strong> chance for development right now.</p><p>The two primary global forecast models are showing development late-week, Both develop the system into a low, but the strength of the system varies quite a bit as the GFS deepens the low more quickly. The system is still only about halfway through the tropical Atlantic by Thursday afternoon, which means any impacts to the U.S. would be another 6-10 days out, at least.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-24 034641-1787564814253.png">Stay tuned...this is the time of the year when the Atlantic Waters can get a little rowdy. Atlantic Tropics : Watching Several Areas, Strong Tropical Wave Late Week

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

<h1><strong>WHAT TO EXPECT</strong></h1><p>A strong ridge of high pressure is bringing heat to the south. Storms will develop around this ridge, bringing rounds of severe weather across the plains. Daily storm chances will occur, with the main concerns being damaging winds, large hail, and even a few tornadoes. Through Monday morning, the severe risk continues from Billings to Bismarck and down into Salt Lake City. There is a significant severe threat through Monday, meaning some storms could produce wind gusts of 75+ mph and hailstones up to 2 inches!</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-23 191013-1787533883536.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-23 191034-1787533888433.png"></p><h1>TIMING:</h1><p>Some storms may have enough fuel to linger into the overnight hours, but as we head into Monday and Tuesday, the best timing for severe storms will be in the afternoon and evening hours with diurnal heating. <p>Record heat rolls on across the Lone Star State. Several cities saw record highs over 100 degrees on Saturday. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/1-1787450855270.png"><br>On Sunday, a record high temperature was set in Melbourne, Florida.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-23 190845-1787533729856.png">The intense heat is likely to continue for the next few days with more potential records.<br><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-23 190907-1787533756224.png"></p><p><strong>Heat Advisories</strong> and <strong>Extreme Heat Warnings </strong>remain across the Southern U.S. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-23 184828-1787533766535.png"></p><p>Feels-like temperatures remain dangerously hot. Stifling Heat Holds Steady for Southern U.S.

<p>A stormy end to the week is taking shape for parts of the eastern U.S., where rounds of thunderstorms will bring torrential rain, localized flash flooding, damaging winds, and tornadoes.<span style="color: rgb(36, 36, 36)">&nbsp;Thursday, storms produced significant damage across parts of Delaware and Pennsylvania. In Dover, a tornado hit, causing damage throughout the city. A high school near Lancaster, PA had its roof ripped off. The severe risk will diminish for the morning, and then the risk picks up during the afternoon and evening.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/FORECAST-1787270277549.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Urban communities will be particularly vulnerable. Heavy downpours can quickly overwhelm storm drains, leaving streets, underpasses, and other low-lying areas flooded. Areas that experience multiple storms could see the flooding risk increase as the ground becomes increasingly saturated.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/PIC 2-1787274133924.jpg"></p><p>A cold front moving east will provide the trigger for showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. With plenty of moisture available, some storms will be capable of producing a large amount of rain in a short period of time.<span style="color: rgb(36, 36, 36)">&nbsp;</span></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-20 080419-1787234676441.png">Friday, the focus for heavier rainfall and thunderstorms is expected to extend from parts of Virginia and North Carolina toward the Delmarva Peninsula and portions of South Carolina.<span style="color: rgb(36, 36, 36)">&nbsp;Severe storms could extend all the way down to the Gulf Coast for Friday afternoon and evening.</span></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot 2026-08-21 040323-1787306617672.png"></p><p>The front could linger near the East Coast rather than quickly clearing the region, allowing additional showers and storms to develop into the start of the weekend. Several inches of rain could accumulate in some locations, especially where thunderstorms repeatedly track over the same areas.<span style="color: rgb(36, 36, 36)">&nbsp;</span>If a roadway is covered by water, drivers should turn around and find another route. The depth of floodwater can be difficult to determine, and even relatively shallow moving water can create hazardous conditions for vehicles.<span style="color: rgb(36, 36, 36)">&nbsp;Tune into WeatherNation TV for more details.</span></p>

Severe Storms and Heavy Rain Across the East Coast

A large area of low pressure will be moving across the Country this weekend.  North of this system will mean heavy snow, but to the South of this system we are forecasting heavy rain and the potential for severe storms.  Here is the very latest on the severe storm chance.

A 15% risk for severe storms has already been issued from the <a href="https://www.spc.noaa.gov/">Storm Prediction Center</a>.  It is still too far out to determine if all modes of severe weather will be in the forecast, but go ahead and start to plan for damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes.

The latest timing for the storms will be from Saturday afternoon to Saturday night.  Because of how far out this forecast is we can't rule out severe storm chances into early Sunday morning as well.
