If it hasn't been wet, it's been warm out West. This week looks no different as our good friend, an Upper Level Ridge, will keep hold for the next day. That will keep the quiet weather around, but will start to push temperatures into historic levels by midweek. Plenty of records Monday and Tuesday afternoon from California to Arizona.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Web 3-1762948621307.png"><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/2025-11-12 06-47-03-1762948077658.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Temperatures are expected to run above average through the week in many of our southwestern cities.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Web 6-1762948853266.png">Salt Lake City will see a high of 69° on Thursday. This city normally averages 54°. With photos and videos prove that skygaziers are spotting them much farther south in the United States and Europe over the last two years. It begs the question...Why are we seeing these geomagnetic storms that are far more reaching than normal? The reason? The sun is undergoing a dramatic magnetic shift. Every 11 years, its poles reverse, creating intense magnetic twists and disturbances that fuel these vivid light shows. Aurora lovers, rejoice! The Space Weather Prediction Center said on Tuesday, November 11th, aurora chances are back and could be seen as far south as Alabama and Northern California. Space weather forecasters predict more dazzling displays through at least the end of the year.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1988294702827802778" src="https://x.com/NWSSWPC/status/1988294702827802778?s=20"></div>A coronal mass ejection (CME) is expected to arrive at and partially impact the Earth with the potential for elevated geomagnetic response, AKA: auroras. As of 12 pm ET on November 11th, the SWPC issued a Geomagnetic Storm Watch of G4 or higher.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/g scale-1762887156247.png"><h3>THE FORECAST:</h3>The organization goes on to say the aurora could be seen as far south as Alabama and Northern California. Below is the scheduled forecast for where the aurora will likely be visible should the forecast hold up.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Aurora Forecast-1762887274464.png">The best time to see the aurora for places like Alabama, is between 9 pm and 12 pm CT on Tuesday. Solar Storm Visible as far south as Alabama - Why the Northern Lights (Auroras) are More Expansive Lately?

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

The season’s first Arctic blast has surged into the South, arriving nearly three weeks ahead of meteorological winter, which begins December 1. Driven by a deep upper-level trough, this system has funneled frigid Canadian air all the way down to Texas. Multiple record lows were set this morning across the south and southeast, and the chance continues on Wednesday morning. Overnight lows will be in the 30s and 40s to start your day, so bundle up.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Web 1-1762947369987.png">Florida has the potential to see many record lows broken on Wednesday morning. Temperatures will be in the 20s, 30s, and 40s.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/WED MORNING-1762908433559.png">This early blast of winter is a reminder that the transition from autumn to winter can happen abruptly when large-scale atmospheric patterns align. People should prepare by checking heating systems, protecting exposed pipes, and dressing in multiple insulating layers to guard against hypothermia and frostbite. The good news, is this cold snap won't last long. After two summers of storm chasing in the central plains, she knew that it was the career path for her. Standing in front of a thunderstorm and feeling the cool outflow knock her over was an experience she will never forget. After two years at COD, she transferred to Metropolitan State University of Denver. Karissa graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology. Her high school and college speech and meteorology professors were extremely supportive and pushed her to succeed. Before joining the WeatherNation team, she previously worked as the Morning Meteorologist at KCAU-TV in Sioux City, Iowa and at WMBD-TV in Peoria, IL. She recently was part of a National Edward R. Murrow award winning team for breaking news for their coverage of the EF-4 tornado in Washington, Illinois. In her free time, Karissa enjoys cooking and trying new foods. She is a self proclaimed 'TV Junkie' who can get into just about any show. She is a die hard Chicago sports fan who loves attending professional sporting events.

Winter alerts have already been issued for the Sierra Nevada as a large digging trough disrupts the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/warm-weather-sticks-around-the-west">warm ridge that's been residing in the west</a>. The west can expect widespread rain chances, mountain snow and cooler temperatures for the rest of the work week.<h1>SET-UP</h1>A digging mid to upper level trough will bring in widespread vertical lift to the western U.S. As the trough helps draw in tropical moisture, it will meet a cool low pressure system at the surface. As a cold front crashes east and south, precipitation chances will spread from border to border, into the Cascades, Rockies, and eventually across the country.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-11 073335-1762871622394.png">Onshore flow will begin Wednesday allowing for a few pre-frontal showers. As the cold front moves inland Wednesday night, storms will become more wide spread, especially through Oregon and northern California. Dropping overnight temperatures will ensure snowfall in the mountainous regions, that will carry into Thursday. As the front pushes south, southern California will see a good chance at rain by Thursday evening. We may even see some snow at the highest elevation peaks in SoCal. As the surface low wraps up within itself, scattered showers and mountain snow will continue across the Pacific northwest Thursday.The first wave will move into the Rockies and Four Corners states on Friday, as another trough comes ashore. This will mean another round of precipitation from Northern California to the Canadian border, moving into the northern Rockies for the weekend. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Wide west Bams-1762872266764.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>CALIFORNIA IMPACTS</h1>Winter alerts have already been issued for the Sierra Nevada, beginning Wednesday evening and lasting through the end of the day on Thursday. One to two feet of snow is expected at and above pass level, and 4-12" possible above 5000 feet. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-11 072919-1762871768828.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-11 073736-1762871871090.png"><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weather.gov/rev">NWS Reno</a> is also highlighting the danger of the winds. Gusts will easily reach 40 mph, but could exceed 100 mph along ridge tops. With snow falling, whiteout conditions will make driving impossible. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/WeatherStory3-1762872780059.png">Rainfall totals will be heaviest along the northern California coastline where the brunt of the moisture is focused from the atmospheric river. We will have to watch out for totals in southern California to reach 1-2" at lower elevations and 2-4" in the mountains and hills. <h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-11 075429-1762872879293.png">NORTHWEST IMPACTS</h1>Coastal areas will see the highest rain totals, especially in southwest Oregon. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-11 075821-1762873129219.png">No winter alerts have been issued for the Cascades yet, but they will likely be needed as totals reach the 1-2 foot range. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-11 080034-1762873243169.png">

The lake effect snow season has arrived, with heavy snow expected now through Tuesday. Places in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan have already received a foot of snow! <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-10 054716-1762778844004.jpg"> Winter weather alerts remain in place all across the shores of the Great Lakes through Tuesday. An additional 6-12" in some locations, with heavy snowfall rates likely reducing visibility at times, will make travel very difficult.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-11 073236-1762871565435.jpg"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-11 105614-1762883788305.png"><h1>How Lake Effect Works</h1>Water has a much higher heat capacity than air, meaning it takes more time to warm up and cool down. This leads to "mild" water temperatures in the Great Lakes while the air overhead can be much cooler. As the cold, dry air moves over these areas, it's able to evaporate moisture from the lakes until it condenses into clouds and precipitation before falling out over land. Typically, we need at least a 13° F difference between the lake water and the air aloft (around 1500 m, or 4500-5000 ft) for lake effect snow to form.<h1>Forecast</h1>With winds coming over the Great Lakes, we can still anticipate lake effect snowfall to continue. Next, a quick-moving clipper will move through to bring a few wintry bands to the snowbelt.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/11-11 rne-1762883738383.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Take this snow event as an example for the next one, make sure your vehicle is ready for winter travel with some good tread on your tires and a winter driving kit. Lake Effect Snow Wraps Up Today

Ahead of the front, warm temperatures and plenty of moisture has kept the severe threat going overnight.The Storm Prediction Center has kept a severe weather threat at a MARGINAL (level 1 out of 5) risk for Florida into the overnight and dies down into Monday morning to be met with cold cold air behind.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-09 175721-1762736328951.png">

Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. A system has been bringing snow across the Plains and Midwest on Saturday. This same system will continue to push through the Great Lakes into Sunday morning. Midwest Clipper Brings Light Snow, Gusty Winds

The state of Alabama is prone to seeing various types of weather from severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and winter weather. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/1-1739061270112.png">Around 6PM ET, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake was detected in the Western Caribbean between the Cayman Islands and Honduras. Over the past few hours, there has been a few aftershocks near the epicenter. Also, there has been a few smaller earthquakes near Puerto Rico.According to the USGS, it is not out of the ordinary to see earthquakes at this location. The last earthquake nearby this location was back in January 2018 with a magnitude of 7.5. A small tsunami was caused similar to tonight's earthquake. The danger of tsunamis have ended and there is no threat to the Gulf waters.We will keep you updated as this is a developing story.
