<p style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt; color: #454545;">Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. <p>It has been an incredible year for space phenomena! <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/eclipse-2024"><strong>The Eclipse</strong></a> captured the country's interest in April before two incredible displays of the Aurora Borealis down to Southern Latitudes in both <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/aurora-borealis-stuns-Friday-Night"><strong>May</strong></a> and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/northern-lights-put-on-dazzling-show-thursday-night"><strong>October</strong></a>. Now, stargazers and astronomy lovers could be treated to one of the best comets of the decade through late October. <br><br><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-12 125001-1728759013410.png">Comet C / 2023 (A3), also known as <span style="color: rgb(37, 41, 49)">Comet </span><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://blogs.nasa.gov/Watch_the_Skies/2024/10/02/ancient-oort-cloud-comet-to-make-first-documented-pass-by-earth-in-mid-october/"><u>Tsuchinshan-ATLAS,</u></a> last passed the earth about 80,000 years ago, but was only discovered last year! This Oort cloud comet has been gracing the morning skies in the Southern Hemisphere over the last few weeks as it approached and moved around the sun. The comet is now passing Earth at it's closest distance in its current orbit and is now expected to move away and slowly fade from view. Because of this movement away from Earth, seeing the comet earlier in the month will likely provide the best viewing conditions!</p><h1>How to See the Comet</h1><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Comet-C-2023-A3-Map-ST-version-1728759033662.jpg"></p><p>Timing for this event will be important, as the comet will only be visible for a short time in the evening before it dips below the horizon, especially earlier in the month. For the first few nights of viewing, the comet will appear low on the western horizon to the right of Venus (by about two fists held at arm's length). Be sure to be ready around sunset with a clear western horizon and something to be able to zoom in, like binoculars or a telescope. If you're lucky, it may be visible to the naked eye, but the tail may not be visible unless you use magnifying equipment.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-12 132749-1728761309145.jpg">As the month continues, the comet will gradually appear higher above the western horizon, but it is expected to fade as the month progresses. Here are a few examples of where you'll need to look for the first few evenings of viewing.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-12 132801-1728761314880.jpg"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-12 132809-1728761323001.jpg">Clear skies will be a must but getting away from city lights will also help the comet stand out as dusk fades into night. This still has a small window to become a depression as it moves through the Cabo Verde Islands, but harsh conditions are expected to weaken the system as it moves farther west. It's not out of the question that this wave could get organized again as it gets closer to the Caribbean toward the end of next week.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-12 115022-1728755429147.png">Forecast models keep Invest 94-L on a westward trajectory, approaching the Caribbean next Thursday/Friday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/1-1728701682980.png"></p><h2>Remnants of Leslie</h2><p>Leslie continues moving northeast over the Central Atlantic with no coastal alerts or hazards to the US expected. The storm is now post-tropical, which means there will no longer be any advisories issued from the National Hurricane Center. However, Leslie could impact the Azores as a tropical storm and could bring heavy rain to southwestern Europe next week. Impacts for the Azores are expected Sunday into Monday, with mid-week impacts possible in Europe.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-12 115151-1728755525282.png"></p><h1>Looking Ahead</h1><p>The Climate Prediction Center has released their 2-week and 3-week tropical outlooks for the Atlantic and Pacific, and currently there is low confidence on any tropical formation. Summer of 1993, New England Dragway. That's when and where Steve knew he wanted to become a meteorologist. More than 20 years later he is extremely fortunate and blessed to be able to live his childhood dream. As a lover of math and science, Steve had a consistent interest in weather in elementary, middle, and high school before discovering you can major in meteorology. He attended Lyndon State College in Vermont where he received a bachelor's in meteorology-broadcasting and associate's in television news. He has worked as a meteorologist and reporter in Winchester, VA, Burlington, VT, and most recently in West Palm Beach, FL. He's recognized by the American Meteorological Society with the Certification of Broadcast Meteorologists.

<p>While Hurricane Milton was approaching Tampa Bay and Sarasota on Wednesday, tornadoes were tearing across the eastern part of Florida. A distance of 200 miles away from the storm's center, many Floridians found themselves seeking shelter in the path of numerous tornado warnings.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1844129430874267922" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1844129430874267922"></div><p>Tornado reports are slowly starting to trickle in from different weather service offices in Florida. Let's start in Fort Pierce. The above VIDEO was an EF-3 tornado with winds of 155 mph. This tornado sadly claimed the lives of several people on Wednesday. The next report (below) is from the Palm Beach Gardens and Wellington, FL area. This tornado was also rated an EF-3 with winds of 140 mph!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/1-1728703505467.png"></p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1844021346503999978" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1844021346503999978"></div><p>According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Miami, Florida, there have been at least 55 tornado warnings issued by NWS Miami. Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. <p><strong>PHOENIX, AZ </strong>- Phoenix has currently undergone more than 2 full weeks of record-breaking temperatures. Thursday, Phoenix's high temperature rose to 107° which breaks the previous record of 105°. It makes 17 consecutive days Phoenix has had a new daily high-temperature record!</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1843760340808675575" src="https://twitter.com/NWSPhoenix/status/1843760340808675575"></div><p></p><p>Over time, the temperatures will continue to drop closer to average heading into next week! The intense heat will start to build in areas of the Southern Plains.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/1-1728701903180.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/1-1728702004478.png">Back in Phoenix, the chances for record-breaking numbers will continue. Never Ending Record-Heat for Phoenix

<p>Thursday night will be a night many people will remember, and cherish, for the rest of their lives. The Northern Lights put on a brilliant display, wowing millions of people across the United States.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-11 074847-1728655387759.png">A strong geomagnetic storm began to impact Earth on Thursday afternoon, East coast time, and some wondered if it would last long enough until nightfall and allow residents of the U.S. to view it. Well, it did last.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1844569999253414380" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1844569999253414380"></div><p>The Aurora Borealis was visible in New England, the Great Lakes, the mid-Atlantic, even down to the Gulf Coast states! The answer to that is "Likely." We say that, because the show of the Northern Lights on Thursday night was the second time <strong>this week</strong> that we have had a show of the Aurora! There was another big solar event on Monday night, too.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-11 074810-1728656118422.png">The forecast for Friday night into Saturday morning, October 11th into the 12th, is for the Aurora to not be <strong>as intense</strong> as it was Thursday night. It could still be visible on the horizon from Seattle to Sioux Falls to Detroit and to Portland, Maine.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/1-1728672341109.png"></p><p>Thursday night's solar storm was rated a "G4" short for Geomagnetic Storm. That's classified as a severe solar storm. Think of the G scale as the EF scale for tornadoes, or the Saffir-Simpson scale for hurricanes. The range is 1 to 5, 5 being most intense. Friday night, the forecast is for a G2.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/1-1728672388820.png"></p><p>The aurora will still be visible as this strong solar event continues. How about cloud cover?</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-11 074827-1728656336942.png">The best viewing appears to be in northern Michigan, northern Minnesota, and northern Montana. Other states could get obscured by clouds.</p><p>If you have FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) about the aurora, fret not. We are in a solar maximum cycle. More of these events will be likely through 2025.</p>

Northern Lights Put On Dazzling Show Thursday Night

<p><strong>BOISE, ID—The Valley Fire, a new fire east of Boise, Idaho, started on Friday, October 4th.</strong> It is located along Highway 21 near Highland Valley Summit (SE of Boise). The NWS encourages citizens to avoid the area while crews work on containment.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-10 141934-1728591591115.png"> Additional wildfires continue to burn in Wyoming, including the Elk Fire and the Pack Fire. The Pack Fire has likely become a complex fire now that it has joined acreage with a fire that was previously burning to the north. Together, these fires have burned over 140k acres.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-10 142016-1728591622874.png"></p><p><strong>Air Quality Alerts </strong>remain in effect in close proximity to burning fires, due to lofted wildfire smoke. This smoke is expected to get caught in the jet stream and occasionally push into places like Denver and Rapid City.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-10 142231-1728591755915.png">Here's a look at the latest smoke forecast for the western U.S. and throughout the country.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/moresmoke-1728610962581.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Meanwhile, fires continue to burn across Southern California. The Line Fire, which has had trouble containing, continues to burn. Fire Danger Continues Out West

<p><strong>FLORIDA - Milton made landfall as a category 3 hurricane Wednesday evening in Siesta Key Florida. It proceeded to move across the state with hurricane force winds, knocking out power to over 3 million households while producing flooding rain and destructive storm surge. On Wednesday, Milton produced a record number of tornadoes for several regions.</strong></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-09 183259-1728520901833.jpg"></p><p>On Monday, the central pressure within Milton tumbled to a historically low level. The central pressure dropped to 897 millibars, which placed Milton as the 5th lowest pressure from an Atlantic named storm. Milton weakened somewhat as it approached the Florida Coastline, however the impacts remained strong.</p><h1>Wind Reports</h1><p>According to the National Weather Service, a wind gust of 105 mph was clocked in Egmont Channel.</p><h1><strong><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/1-1728585889838.png"></strong>Rain &amp; Flooding Forecast</h1><p>Rainfall amounts have topped 18" in some locations. The good news is that the heaviest rain has now moved into the Atlantic Ocean!
