Karissa is the Director of On-Air Operations at WeatherNation. Karissa grew up loving math and science, but really fell in love with Meteorology while attending the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. After two summers of storm chasing in the central plains, she knew that it was the career path for her. Standing in front of a thunderstorm and feeling the cool outflow knock her over was an experience she will never forget. After two years at COD, she transferred to Metropolitan State University of Denver. Karissa graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology. Her high school and college speech and meteorology professors were extremely supportive and pushed her to succeed. Before joining the WeatherNation team, she previously worked as the Morning Meteorologist at KCAU-TV in Sioux City, Iowa and at WMBD-TV in Peoria, IL. She recently was part of a National Edward R. Murrow award winning team for breaking news for their coverage of the EF-4 tornado in Washington, Illinois. In her free time, Karissa enjoys cooking and trying new foods. She is a self proclaimed 'TV Junkie' who can get into just about any show. She is a die hard Chicago sports fan who loves attending professional sporting events.

Join us as we help you get your plan together, understand the science behind tropical systems, and much more so you can be prepared. Whether you live on the coastline or inland, it is important to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.ready.gov/hurricanes">know your risks</a> when it comes to tropical systems.&nbsp; Coastal communities are most at risk of destructive winds, dangerous storm surge, and are more likely to have to evacuate. Communities even hundreds of miles away from coastlines are still at risk, with the threat of high winds, flooding rainfall, severe weather &amp; tornadoes, and the longer-lasting threat of flooding and power outages that could occur days or weeks after a storm hits.</p><p>Between Hurricanes Beryl, Helene and Milton, here's a look back at what happened last year:</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/2RO-HrmdaZg" start="0"></iframe></div><h1>KNOW YOUR RISKS</h1><p>After a destructive and dangerous 2024 hurricane season, we are looking ahead to 2025. Hurricane season begins on May 15 for the Eastern Pacific Basin, and on June 1 for the Atlantic basin.</p><p><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/noaa-predicts-above-average-2025-hurricane-season"><strong>WHAT'S THE FORECAST THIS SEASON?</strong></a> Forecasters from NOAA have issued their 2025 Season Outlook for Atlantic Basin.&nbsp;Early predictions expect this year's hurricane season to be busier than average. This year they anticipate 13-19 named storms, 6-10 of which expected to become hurricanes and 3-5 of those to become major hurricanes (CAT 3 or greater).</p><p>This year is expected to be above average thanks to warm sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic. Although we aren’t expecting the same extreme, record-breaking ocean heat from the last two years. While ENSO Neutral conditions are forecast to develop this summer, La Niña conditions that traditionally support tropical development <em>could</em> sneak back in by the fall. Despite uncertainty, forecasters feel that the <em>lack</em> of El Niño conditions is enough to warrant an active forecast.<span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0)"> </span>El Niño means would mean warmer-than-normal water in the central and eastern [tropical] Pacific Ocean. That tends to create more wind shear to tear apart hurricanes in the Atlantic. Because El Niño is not expected to limit development, more hurricanes may form.</p><p>While seasonal outlooks give us some idea of what to expect, there is no way to know for certain just what the season will have in store for YOUR area.&nbsp; Seasonal outlooks cannot forecast exactly when, where, or if storm will strike. Remember, it only takes <em>one</em> to impact your area to become a "bad season".&nbsp; So, it's important to prepare before a storm threatens.</p><p>In preparation for the upcoming season, NOAA's National Hurricane Center is incorporating new tools and processes to keep the public better informed. Here's what's new this season:</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-Jaz3KuoQH0" start="0"></iframe></div><p></p><p><strong>LIVE INLAND? YOU AREN'T IMMUNE TO HURRICANES!</strong> Even if you live nowhere near a coastline, impacts from tropical systems can still occur. This lesson was learned during Hurricane Helene with historic, catastrophic flooding as far north as North Carolina. Inland rain and water are the deadliest parts of Tropical Storms and the impacts can spread far away from the immediate coastline.</p><p><strong>UNDERSTANDING STORM SURGE</strong> Along the coast, storm surge is often the greatest threat to life and property from a hurricane.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/surge/">Storm surge</a> has come along with some of the most powerful storms in history.</p><h1>PREPARE AT HOME</h1><p><strong>GET YOUR SUPPLY KIT READY</strong> Once your know your risks, you should put together an essential hurricane supply kit. There's A LOT of jargon, phrases, and information that can make understanding tropical cyclones difficult. Understanding the basics may help when a storm threatens.</p><p><strong>WATCHES VS. WARNINGS</strong> Do you know the difference between a watch and a warning? What about all of the alerts issued during tropical season? Whenever a tropical cyclone (a tropical depression, tropical storm, or hurricane) or a subtropical storm has formed in the Atlantic or eastern North Pacific, the NOAA National Hurricane Center (NHC) issues tropical cyclone advisory products<em>&nbsp;at least</em> every 6 hours at 5 am, 11 am, 5 pm, and 11 pm EDT. A WATCH is issued when hurricane, tropical storm or storm surge conditions are expected within 48 hours. A WARNING is issued when life-threatening conditions are expected within 36 hours.</p><p><strong>WHAT IS THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE?</strong> The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is a 1 to 5 rating based on a hurricane's sustained wind speed, with 5 being the highest. This scale estimates potential property damage. Hurricanes reaching Category 3 and higher are considered major hurricanes because of their potential for significant loss of life and damage. Category 1 and 2 storms are still dangerous, however, and require preventative measures.&nbsp; (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshws.php"><em>Source: NHC</em></a>)</p><p><strong>UNDERSTANDING THE FORECAST "CONE"</strong> Listening to forecast details can mean the difference between being prepared and caught off guard. Before a storm strikes, you'll often see a forecast "cone" to represent the expected forecast track of a system. The forecast cone <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutcone.shtml"><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">represents the probable track of the center of a tropical cyclone</span></a><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">. The width of the cone is based on historical forecast error percentage and uncertainty in the forecast. In 2024, NHC released an experimental version of the cone to not just communicate the center track, but to also show the widespread nature of potential impacts. They plan to fine tune and continue to use this concurrently until it becomes the primary forecast.</span></p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8klF8QpFKm8" start="0"></iframe></div><p><strong>WHAT PART OF A HURRICANE IS THE MOST POWERFUL?</strong> When a hurricane threatens landfall, most often the most impacts will be felt on the "front right quadrant" in relation to the direction of movement. Impacts can and will be felt on all "sides" of a storm, but the threat of highest winds, storm surge, and indirect impacts, such as tornadoes, are often increased in the front right quadrant.</p><h1>LOOKING BACK AT HURRICANE IKE</h1><p><span style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255)">We sat down with Dr. Jim Siebert and Meteorologist Dave Holder to talk about their experiences living through Hurricane Ike in 2008. <p style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt; color: #454545;">Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

<p>Smoky skies will continue to cover portions of the Central and Eastern United States this weekend, as massive fires in Canada continue to spread. An upper-level trough in the Northeast and Great Lakes is guiding the smoke from north to south, which will eventually bring the smoke as far south as the Gulf Coast.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/web 8-1748774540363.png"></p><h1>Smoke Overhead</h1><p>The forecast below shows where smoke will be visible overhead and doesn't necessarily indicate where air quality will be impacted. Think hazy sunrises and sunsets.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/2025-06-01 06-44-10-1748774691541.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Near Surface Smoke / Air Quality Impacts</h1><p>This model shows where smoke will be thick near the ground, indicating areas where air quality impacts are more likely. Minnesota is expecting more widespread impacts on the Air Quality front. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an Air Quality Alert for fine particles pollution. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to reach the Orange or Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/2025-06-01 06-48-32-1748774938443.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p></p><p>Air quality alerts have been issued in the Upper-Midwest, with additional alerts probable into early next week as thick smoke lingers in the region.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-01 093258-1748791982202.png"></p><p>Air quality on Saturday was impacted in the Upper-Midwest and the Ohio Valley. Wildfire Smoke Spreads South Across the U.S.

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

<p>After temperature extremes and a very active month of May, the active severe weather pattern lingers for Texas into June. An afternoon round of storms is expected to develop between Dallas and Houston. Isolated Severe Storms for TX Today

<p>Even through summer is approaching, the northern lights may still dazzle millions Sunday night into Monday morning. A powerful solar flare erupted from sun late Friday night, with an Earth directed coronal mass ejection (CME) expected to arrive sometime Sunday. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/ezgif-51637e8d7b470f-1748712327325.gif"></p><p>Astronomers are in a wait and see mode for how strong the CME may be, but many are hopeful it will be strong enough to bring aurora borealis down to the mid-latitudes, including a large portion of the north United States late Sunday into Monday. The Space Weather Prediction Center is expected G3 conditions, with the potential for G4 conditions by the 2nd, or early Monday morning. Their latest forecast shows the potential to view the aurora down to I-80 in Iowa and Nebraska.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-31 112223-1748712236698.png"></p><p>G4 conditions would mean aurora viewing would be possible even farther south, especially for long exposure photography. It is worth noting the timing and strength of a CME is difficult to forecast, but satellites away from the Earth will be able to confirm if and when a CME impact is expected with about 30 minutes of lead time for earthlings. This means if you plan to try to view the aurora, stay up to date with the Space Weather Prediction Center's latest conditions.</p><h2>Cloud Forecast</h2><p>Even if the aurora may be visible overhead, it doesn't mean clouds won't run your fun. For the northern and mid-latitudes, there will be some cloud cover over the northern Rockies, Great Lakes, and northern New England.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/2025-05-31 11-22-33-1748712624382.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>

Aurora Borealis Could Reach the Mid-Latitudes Sunday Night

<p>Atlantic hurricane season is just around the corner, so the question is, when and where we will see the first system of the season?</p><p>Signs are pointing to areas around Central America during the 2nd or 3rd week of June, as increasing lift moves into the region along with westerly winds. <br><br>The Climate Prediction Center is highlighting this region (top of page) with low confidence of a tropical system forming in the western Caribbean or southwestern Gulf, also known as the Bay of Campeche. This doesn't indicate a system is expected, so be sure to stay up to date with the 7-Day forecast from the National Hurricane Center.<br><br>Better chances for formation around Mid-June are expected in the Eastern Pacific, which <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/an-area-to-watch-in-the-pacific-already"><u>already has one name crossed off the list</u></a>.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-29 104826-1748537463299.png">A system in the Gulf or western Atlantic is not unusual in the month of June, which typically has warmer water early in the season compared to the MDR in the Atlantic (between the Caribbean and west Africa).</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-29 104849-1748537876634.png"></p><p>The early season will more often see more tropical storms than hurricanes, but hurricanes can form and impact the United States, so it's <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/hurricane-prep-week-2025"><u>always best to be prepared</u></a>. Andrea is the first name on the list in the Atlantic in 2025.</p><h2><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-29 104834-1748537884478.png">Eastern Pacific Ocean</h2><p>We are monitoring a medium chance for tropical development in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Conditions look favorable for a slow development by late this week. First Tropical System in the Atlantic Could Form Mid-June, Watching E. Pacific

<p>The Southern United States has certainly been active over the past week, with multiple rounds of strong storms and heavy rain. This threat continues across the Sunshine State through Tuesday. A stalled frontal boundary remains in place, fueling daily rounds of rainfall and thunder that could disrupt outdoor activities, travel, and popular tourist destinations.<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">&nbsp;</span></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-31 060218-1748692959487.jpg"></p><h1>Severe Outlook</h1><p>With favorable atmospheric conditions, including sufficient deep-layer shear, there is a chance for storms to organize, producing gusty to damaging winds and possibly small to near-severe hail. While the severe threat remains isolated today, those headed outdoors should remain alert to fast-developing weather for the remainder of the weekend.</p><p>These areas have had heavy rain over the last several weeks and that means flooding will also be a concern.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-01 075458-1748786103719.png"></p><h1>Forecast Timing</h1><p>Strong storms will remain possible through this afternoon, but you'll notice storms will continue through the beginning of the work week. Areas of heavy rainfall and lightning remain possible. For now, the SPC has a general thunderstorm risk in place for Monday.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/0601-1748786250474.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p></p><p>The Weather Prediction Center has issued a slight risk Excessive Rainfall Outlook area for Miami and Fort Lauderdale on Monday and Tuesday, meaning urban flooding could be possible in the midst of heavy downpours and/or flooding in low lying areas is possible.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-01 075739-1748786262605.png"></p><p>For visitors headed to Florida’s theme parks or beaches, storm safety is critical.</p><p>Thunderstorms in Florida can form quickly, especially in the warmer months. If thunder is heard, it means lightning is close enough to strike, visitors should immediately seek shelter in a sturdy building or enclosed vehicle. At beaches, never remain in the water during a storm, as lightning can strike well beyond where rain is falling. Lifeguards may post warnings or clear the beach if storms approach, heed all instructions promptly. In theme parks, designated storm shelters and covered areas offer refuge; it is best to pause outdoor activities until at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder.<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">&nbsp;</span></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-31 060337-1748693027621.jpg">For the most up-to-date information, tune into our Eastern Regional Forecast at 10 past the hour, every hour. Florida Braces for a Stormy Few Days

<p><strong>Hurricane Season has begun in the Eastern Pacific basin! </strong>The season officially kicked off on May 15. Almost two weeks after the start of the season, tropical depression One-E formed and was quickly upgraded to Tropical Storm Alvin.</p><h1>Alvin</h1><p>TD-1E strengthened to Tropical Storm Alvin on Thursday, but quickly reached its peak intensity Thursday evening before it started to weaken on Friday. The storm is expected to weaken to a remnant low as it nears Cabo San Lucas Saturday, but will still pack scattered heavy showers.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-31 053724-1748691617272.png">Moisture from this system is expected to move into portions of the Southwest this weekend, increasing chances for thunderstorms and flooding.</p><h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-30 053532-1748604940060.png">Next System</h1><p>The next system in the Eastern Pacific basin may not be far behind Alvin. An area of low pressure could form west of Guatemala next week. With conditions favorable for development, Barbara may not be far behind Alvin.
