In the Western Pacific hundreds of thousands of miles away, Typhoon Koinu made landfall southern Taiwan as a powerful CAT 3 hurricane on Thursday morning. The storm will continue its weakening phase as it brushes across Southeast Asia this weekend. Typhoons and hurricanes are very similar expect the naming can be different depending on where in the world you are. For the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific, we use the term hurricane and once they cross the International Date line they become a typhoon. Now in case you were wondering, the super typhoon classification is given for a storm that reaches winds 150 mph or stronger.
