Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

A strong cold front is pushing across the Front Range and Midwest this weekend, dropping temperatures considerably. Along the leading edge of that cold air, we'll see enough energy for a few strong or severe storms capable of producing strong winds and large hail. Upper-level high pressure will stay dominant over the Southwest, leading to dangerous heat and dry conditions. Widespread heat alerts remain in place through the rest of the weekend. This includes cities like Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-24 043537-1756031744179.jpg">In the Desert Southwest, temperatures will again climb well into the triple digits over the next few days. Further north, in California, Oregon, and Nevada, highs will climb into the 90s and 100s. It's been a story of record-breaking temperatures across different corners of the country lately, but a strong cold front will bring an autumn-like feel to many as we roll into next week!<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/2025-08-24 07-29-06-1756042184224.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Chilly temperatures spilled into the Northern Plains and Rockies this weekend, leading to overnight lows in the 30s across six states!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-24 072700-1756042361894.png">These cold temperatures are heading east to start the work week, promping frost advisories in the Arrowhead of Minnesota for Monday morning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-24 072706-1756042369288.png"><h2>Forecast</h2>As the cold front moves into the Northeast, it will bring a severe thunderstorm risk along with it (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/an-active-pattern-from-the-northern-plains-to-the-great-lakes">Northeast Storms</a>). <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/mon--wdd-1756059017598.png">Behind the front, a much cooler air mass will move in. High temperatures will only reach the 60s for some neighborhoods across the northern tier states by Sunday. As we enter next week, the Northeast will feel the much cooler air.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-22 143636-1755895002550.png">As the cooler air settles in, overnight lows will be noticeably cooler. Residents of the Upper Midwest may need a light jacket or sweater by Tuesday morning!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-21 123915-1755801563088.png">Is it too early to be thinking about fall foliage? Nah! Locations in northern Alaska are already seeing peak color! It won't be too much longer until the leaves start changing at higher elevations in the Lower 48!<hr>

Strong Summer Cold Front Dives South This Week

About two-thirds of all Atlantic hurricane activity typically occurs between August 20th and October 10th. We're heading through the heart of Atlantic hurricane season, and we certainly have activity that indicates an uptick in energy. Currently, we are monitoring two areas of interest!<h1>Fernand</h1>A tropical wave has developed into a Tropical Storm with the National Hurricane Center's latest outlook. The storm has been given the name Fernand, pronounced FAIR-NAHN. The good news for the East Coast is that this storm's path is well east of the US mainland. People with interests in Bermuda should monitor this storm closely as it looks to brush the island to the east. Tropical Storm Watches may be issued for Bermuda soon. At this time, strengthening into a hurricane is not expected.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-24 041538-1756030546315.jpg"><h1>Invest 99-L</h1>Another tropical wave is approaching the Leeward Islands to begin the week. Conditions for development have increased recently, with some models trying to push the system through the Caribbean. Conditions are not expected to remain favorable for development in the Caribbean, but ANY system moving through the Caribbean bears watching as its remnants could spur a low in the Western Caribbean or Gulf toward the end of the week. While chances for those remnants to develop look low at the moment, things can change significantly through the next week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-24 041743-1756030671780.jpg"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/pic6-1756056061325.png"><h1>NEXT FEW WEEKS</h1>The tropics in the Atlantic have a chance to stay active through the first week of September. While a large-scale Kelvin Wave isn't likely to spur activity like it has over the last two weeks, additional tropical waves could develop in the Atlantic and the Gulf/Western Caribbean. TROPICS: Fernand Spins Around Atlantic, System to Watch in the Caribbean

A lackluster monsoon season has been the story so far this year in portions of California, Arizona, and Nevada. The bulk of monsoonal storms have been impacting New Mexico and Colorado, but that has changed as big surges of monsoonal moisture push all the way to the Pacific!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-24 053958-1756035609554.png">Monsoonal moisture is typically moved around the semi-permanent high-pressure system that moves north from Mexico during the summer months. This ridge will steer moisture farther north and west this week as it sits over NM and CO.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/kjnnn-1756059138393.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Widespread thunderstorms are expected through the weekend, through AT LEAST the mid-week time frame. While afternoons look the busiest with many new storms developing over high terrain, moisture will be plentiful enough to see some morning and overnight convection as well.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/2025-08-24 05-41-12-1756036149904.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The WPC has issued Excessive Rainfall Outlooks (flood outlooks) for the next five days. Most areas will be under the level one risk, marginal, for isolated flash flooding, but a level 2 risk (slight) is being highlighted for some areas as well.

Monsoon Moisture Surges, Flood Risk From California to Colorado

Another day and another record rainfall in South Carolina. This time it was for downtown Charleston! The heavy rain risk isn't going away, as there will be more heavy rain chances on Sunday for some of the same areas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-24 050823-1756033711271.jpg">Storms will stick around Sunday, with rainfall rates of 2–3 inches per hour possible in heavier, slower-moving systems. Some of the Outer Banks could pick up enough rain to create flooding thanks to a little enhancement from the low spinning off of the coast. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-24 050847-1756033738504.jpg">Showers and thunderstorms will stick around through the rest of the weekend, starting relatively early each morning. The front will slowly move farther south and bring heavy rainfall across Central Florida.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/secoldfront-1756003938444.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The beaches of the Atlantic Coast could see an additional 1-2 inches, with isolated higher amounts possible. More Flooding Possible in the Southeast

Hurricane Erin was the first major Hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane season, and even though Erin did not make direct landfall in the U.S., impacts were still felt across the eastern seaboard. Hurricane Erin once had a wind field that spanned over 500 miles, and the size of Erin previously made it rank among the top 10% of the largest Atlantic hurricanes ever recorded. With the latest update, the National Hurricane Center has deemed Erin to be post-tropical.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-22 211426-1755918872154.png">Coastal flooding remains an issue. Despite staying offshore, the storm’s effects have rippled up and down the East Coast of the United States, prompting emergency responses from North Carolina to Massachusetts. Larger waves will continue for the Northeast, with life-threatening rip currents. Flooded highways will still be one of the biggest concerns moving forward, especially as high tide approaches.&nbsp;Alerts for coastal flooding have been extended up the Atlantic Seaboard up to the Maine coast.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-22 211444-1755918891648.png">Erin will continue to weaken and move away from land. It is interesting to note that Erin may retain some of its strength as it approaches Iceland, Ireland, and the British Isles.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-22 144508-1755895621872.png">Venturing into the water as a beachgoer will remain dangerous along the East Coast.
