Hard to imagine the skies going dark at 6 o'clock in August isn't it? That's what happened on Monday as nearby thunderstorms kicked up a wall of dust in portions of Arizona. Let's take a look at what happened on Monday night.

The threat of severe storms was in the area and appeared to be verified. Strong thunderstorms started to bubble up in earnest in the early afternoon hours, bringing the threat of damaging straight-line winds.

There's a thin line that starts to out-pace the severe-warned storm as it approaches Phoenix. That's a sign the gust front is approaching, that's what kicked up the dust. This became a wall of dust that was out-running the rain behind it. Imagine that wall moving at 60+ mph - that will sneak up on you quickly. So what do you do if you're on the road?
