Meteorologist Jesse Kelley is excited to join the talented staff at Weather Nation. Jesse spent most of his childhood in Birmingham, Alabama. The state of Alabama is prone to seeing various types of weather from severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and winter weather. For college, Jesse attended the University of South Alabama where he received his degree in Broadcast Meteorology along with minors in Math and Geography. From Alabama, Jesse started his broadcast television working three years at KAVU-TV in Victoria. Recently, he finished a stint in Shreveport, LA. <p>Friday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center has identified INVEST 94L as Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine near Cuba. The National Hurricane Center can identify an area as a potential tropical cyclone to get tropical alerts issued. Tropical Storm Watches and Warnings have been issued for parts of the Bahamas this weekend!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/1-1758920633840.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/1-1758921694111.png"></p><p>So what does this mean for the United States? If you live anywhere from Northeast Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas you might want to start preparing for the potential for tropical impacts next week. Starting now, you should consider going over your hurricane kit and making sure you have things in the event we are looking at a tropical storm or hurricane moving towards the coast next week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/1-1758920895139.png"></p><p>Another threat to keep an eye on will be the heavy rain and flooding threat. As we look long range into next week, several inches of rain will be falling already over saturated soils from this weekend stalled front. Karissa grew up loving math and science, but really fell in love with Meteorology while attending the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. After two summers of storm chasing in the central plains, she knew that it was the career path for her. Standing in front of a thunderstorm and feeling the cool outflow knock her over was an experience she will never forget. After two years at COD, she transferred to Metropolitan State University of Denver. Karissa graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology. Her high school and college speech and meteorology professors were extremely supportive and pushed her to succeed. Before joining the WeatherNation team, she previously worked as the Morning Meteorologist at KCAU-TV in Sioux City, Iowa and at WMBD-TV in Peoria, IL. She recently was part of a National Edward R. Murrow award winning team for breaking news for their coverage of the EF-4 tornado in Washington, Illinois. In her free time, Karissa enjoys cooking and trying new foods. Helene's eyewall passed about 10 miles west-southwest of Perry, Florida at 11:10 p.m. ET on Florida's Gulf Coast. In the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, Helene was one of five landfalling storms along the Gulf coast, including three in Florida.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-24 135342-1758743646080.png"></p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5uqc6I6wcXM" start="0"></iframe></div><p>The remnants of Helene brought catastrophic flooding, which prompted a record 34 Flash Flood Emergencies across portions of Appalachia and Mid-South. Including the first ever for the city of Atlanta, GA after 11" of rain. The highest total from the storm topped out above 30" in North Carolina. A precursor event saturated the soils ahead of Helene. The USGS documented that the heavy rain on top of the impacted soils prompted more than 2000 landslides. 63 stream and river gauges exceeded their record flood levels during Helene. 2,700+ water rescues were documented, about half from storm surge and half from fresh water flooding.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot 2024-09-27 160234-1727474573331.jpg"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-24 140622-1758744396604.png">According to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://poweroutage.us">poweroutage.us</a>, a total of 7.4 million customers lost power at some point during Helene. Below, you can see the counties impacted at the height of the storm.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/power outages tue am-1727778005216.jpg">According to the National Hurricane Center Storm Surge Unit, preliminary post-landfall storm surge heights for the Big Bend region of Florida near Keaton Beach, Steinhatchee, and Horseshoe Beach had water levels reach more than 15 feet above ground level.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/oqhRd4azGbQ" start="0"></iframe></div><p></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-24 135851-1758744720273.png">Even places like Tampa, Florida saw storm surge rise to nearly 8 feet. St. Petersburg, FL set a storm surge record of 6.31ft.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1839689737440841904" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1839689737440841904"></div><p>The aftermath of Hurricane Helene has unfortunately left scenes of devastation from Florida's Big Bend, the southeast, and Appalachia. 250 lives were lost during Helene. 176 were attributed to direct meteorological impacts. The other indirect fatalities were from medical issues, heart attacks, car accidents and incidents during post-storm cleanup.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-24 142115-1758745288551.png">Hurricane Helene cause $78.7 billion dollars in damage, making it the 7th costliest hurricane in U.S. history.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/p7IG-tghJLo" start="0"></iframe></div>

<p>And they'd get away with it, too, if it weren't for us meddling kids. If this feels familiar, it should. Mario and Lorena had similar fates... Or at least their moisture did. The constant factory of the Eastern Pacific has churned out weekly storms for the better part of the last month, with many forming in similar areas and taking similar paths. While they have been weakening as they move north, their moisture still gets wrapped up in the larger atmospheric flow and moves towards the southwest U.S.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/pic6-1758910482245.png">Ahead of Narda, the pattern is already primed for rainfall. A trough of low pressure has set the stage for Pacific moisture to enter the region Friday in Arizona. A Flood Watch and Marginal risk of severe storms from the Storm Prediction Center are in place for the same areas in Arizona as thunderstorm potential continues into Saturday.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-26 092737-1758900577822.png"></p><p>In addition, severe thunderstorms are possible, with wind and hail threats on Friday from Phoenix to Tucson. Isolated tornadoes are possible.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-26 105300-1758905674282.png"></p><p>This weekend, as the trough moves east and starts to really tap into Narda's moisture, the heaviest rainfall will transition into New Mexico and west Texas.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-26 093425-1758900878415.png"></p><p>Tropical moisture in a desert sounds hard to do, but it is often a bad mixture. Flash flooding will be possible in areas of southeast Arizona, picking another 0.5-1" of rain over the coming days. The most likely areas are highlighted in darker green on the Weather Prediction Center's Excessive Rainfall Outlook.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/ero-1758901039943.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>This could help a lackluster monsoon season look better. It will be interesting to see how the drought monitor looks in a week. Déjà Vu: A Chance To Steal Tropical Moisture in the Southwest

<p style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt; color: #454545;">Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. <p>Tropical activity in the Atlantic has greatly increased in the last week. We're now tracking three systems, including a tropical wave which could have impacts in the Southeast by early next week. Post-Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle continues to churn near the Azores with the potential tropical storm impacts for Portugal/Spain. Humberto is rapidly intensifying and will likely become a major hurricane before the weekend.</p><h1>Caribbean Tropical Wave - Invest 94-L</h1><p style="text-align: start"><strong>Invest 94L </strong>- A tropical wave near Hispaniola - has a <strong>high chance </strong>of formation. Because this system is likely to affect locations on the east coast and the Bahamas, the Hurricane Hunters are now flying missions every 6 hours to sample the storm and its surrounding environment. Heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected to move through Hispaniola, the Turks and Caicos, and the southern Bahamas today.</p><p style="text-align: start"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-26 052815-1758886103459.png">This system is likely to become Imelda and could pose a threat to the East Coast. This will be a complicated forecast for both its path and intensity, since Humberto will be close enough to create interaction between the two systems. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-26 053347-1758886434341.png">The path for 94L/Imelda will be determined by several factors, including its strength, which will determine how much its path is influenced by Humberto and larger steering currents. A low-pressure system is expected to cut off in the Southeast this weekend, which then could pull 94L/Imelda toward the coast early next week. This will ultimately be determined by how far north 94L forms into a closed low pressure system and how quickly it moves north. The GFS model favors a farther north/faster system which is more likely to make landfall in the Carolinas, the Euro model favors a more southerly, slower solution that is more likely to stall offshore or get pulled east by Humberto.<br><br>What should you take away from this right now? Be prepared for tropical system impacts if you're in the Carolinas/Georgia, just in case, and monitor this forecast closely over the next few days.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/2025-09-26 05-36-06-1758886588162.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Humberto</h1><p style="text-align: start"><strong>Humberto </strong>was named on Wednesday afternoon and gained hurricane status early Friday morning. According to the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/#Humberto">National Hurricane Center,</a> Humberto is moving toward the northwest around 5 mph, and will stay on a similar trajectory in the coming days. It looks likely that Humberto will undergo rapid intensification today. It's likely to stay as a major hurricane into next week as it churns through warm Atlantic waters.</p><p style="text-align: start"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-26 090037-1758898848037.png"></p><p style="text-align: start">We are now past the climatological peak of Atlantic Hurricane Season, but still have a ways to go for the season.</p><p style="text-align: start"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-24 063435-1758717278455.png"></p><p style="text-align: start">September is historically the peak of hurricane season, and ocean conditions remain favorable for additional development. However, the NHC urges residents along the Atlantic basin to monitor updates closely.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/W2bhqfX0B0A" start="0"></iframe></div><p></p><p>As always, preparedness is key. Whether or not this particular system develops into a named storm, it serves as a reminder that the Atlantic remains active and that the window for tropical threats is far from closed. <h1>Hurricane Narda</h1><p>After forming last weekend, Narda climbed to a Category 2 hurricane. The storm has weakened slightly to a Category 1, and will likely stay near there for Friday. Gradual weakening is expected as it turns north this weekend. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-26 091122-1758899492118.png"></p><p>Large swells and strong currents could continue to reach the Mexico coast as the system pulls away. <p>While weather headlines in the Northwest as of late have been full of Red Flag Warnings and Air Quality Alerts, it appears that a change in the pattern will arrive as early as Sunday evening. </p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/nwisactive-1758829936422.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p></p><p>Most of the weekend looks to remain warm and sunny for the Northwest, as precipitation remains confined to British Columbia. However, a series of digging troughs will bring widespread rain stateside as we enter the next week. </p><p></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-25 134822-1758830125732.png"></p><p>The Weather Prediction Center has forecasted significant rain totals from the Northern California coast up through the Olympics over the next 7 days. </p><p></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-25 134834-1758830197032.png"></p><p>Not all the precipitation may fall as rain! Longer range models are spitting out decent snow totals across the Cascades and the Sawtooth Ranges of central Idaho! </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-25 140002-1758830407938.png"></p><p>This pattern flip may last deeper into October. There is some confidence in above-average precipitation here for the first few days of the month.</p>

Changes Ahead in the Northwest for Next Week

<p>A cold has been slowly progressing across the country, bringing rain and gusty winds along with it. The front will continue to approach the East Coast to tend the week, spurring heavy showers and a few severe storms.</p><p>Damaging winds are the primary concern here as we head into Thursday from Connecticut through Georgia (top of page). Isolated tornadoes are also possible, primarily in the Northeast.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/PIC 3-1758827812988.jpg">Storms will follow along and ahead of the frontal boundary through the end of the work week. For now, Friday remains under a general thunderstorm risk.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/FORECAST-1758827797862.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p><br>The other concern is the threat of flooding. That sport is one that is highly sensitive to weather, let's take a look at the forecast...</p><h2>Forecast Clouds &amp; Rain</h2><p>A few lingering sprinkles will be possible behind the front on Friday, but rain chances look to mostly hold off until Sunday.
