She stayed in the northeast for her education, graduating Summa Cum Laude from SUNY Oswego with a B.S. in Meteorology. Just a few days after graduation, she made the cross country move to Colorado Springs, CO to begin her career at KKTV, the CBS affiliate. Lucy has covered historic blizzards, tornadoes, windstorms, the largest wildfires in Colorado state history and dust storms ... they truly "get it all" in Colorado! An area of low pressure in the western Gulf is likely to develop into a tropical depression this week, according to the National Hurricane Center. There is now a HIGH chance for formation over the next several days but regardless of if this storm system reaches tropical criteria, heavy rain will be the primary threat across the western Gulf.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/06/tropical storm criteria-1718631258821.png">An area of low pressure around the Yucatan Peninsula will provide a southeasterly flow, streaming rich, tropical air into Texas, aiding in thunderstorm development. If this storm is able to become organized in the Western Gulf it will be our first named storm of the season, Alberto.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/06/tropical moistre-1718536525168.jpg">As mentioned above, our primary threat is heavy rain, upwards of 4-6" for many cities along and south of Interstate 10. Despite how soggy this region of Texas and Louisiana was in May, the last 3 weeks have dried out soils, meaning new rainfall increases the potential for flash flooding. Flooding threats are highest on Tuesday and Wednesday as this low moves onshore - the Weather Prediction Center upgraded areas of Gulf Texas under a level 3 out of 4, MODERATE, risk for flash flooding.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/06/rain-1718619490096.jpg">A few showers and storms are the focus in lower Louisiana and Texas on Monday with increasing rain coverage Tuesday and Wednesday, Our area of low pressure finally moves onshore Wednesday with torrential rainfall for South Texas. As a reminder with tropical season, storm path can and WILL shift before arrival, so please constantly check the forecast for impacts to your local areas. Storms aren't expected to be severe in terms of hail and damaging wind gusts (from straight-line winds) but as our low strengths, gusty winds are possible and an isolated waterspout can't be ruled out.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/06/2024-06-17 04-08-21-1718619395209.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>As a reminder, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/noaa-releases-forecast-for-2024-atlantic-hurricane-season">2024 is expected to be above average for tropical activity</a> due to a La Nina forming during the peak of hurricane season in September. TROPICS: Likely Development in the Western Gulf this Week

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. A ridge of high pressure will settle into the Midwest and Northeast U.S. this week bringing a prolonged period of extreme temperatures through the entire week. The<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/noaa-debuts-heatrisk-tool-nationwide"> "HeatRisk" tool by NOAA </a>considers how much above average temperatures are and the time of year to create the risk and aims to give a different way to view heat impacts. An extreme risk is the highest level on the scale and it is recommended you do not go outside and instead stay in cooler conditions, such as in air conditioning. Power outages may be possible due to the stress on the power grid in the heat. The Heat Impacts, also known as the "HeatRisk" tool outlined much of the Midwest and Great Lakes region with the potential for extreme heat impacts multiple days this week. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/06/wed extreme-1718620000758.jpg">Numerous high temperatures will fall this week from Chicago through Boston, MA, and as far south as Tennessee. Heat alerts are in effect from the Ohio Valley to New England this week. Please practice heat safety if you live in these regions and check on your neighbors to make sure they're cool too. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/06/heat alerts-1718620155735.jpg">Temperatures start to climb Monday with Heat Index values pushing 100° in the Midwest. Highs along I-95 will climb about 5° above average from NYC through Virginia. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/06/monday-1718620000757.jpg">Temperatures really start to crank Tuesday through Thursday. This heat wave will bring high temperatures as much as 10 to 15 degrees above average, which yes, is unseasonably warm, but what could be more impactful is just how long this heatwave persists. Temperatures in the 90s and potentially triple digits may last through next weekend for the Northeast.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/06/tue - thu-1718620000754.jpg">We know it is summer time and we expect hot temps, but remember to take care and check on neighbors in the heat, don't over-exert yourself, and never leave children or <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/states-with-laws-to-protect-pets-in-hot-cars">pets in hot cars</a>. Temperatures will be 10-20° above normal for this time of year and our bodies are not accustomed to it yet.

"Extreme Heat" for the Midwest & Northeast this Week

After storms pushed through the Chicago area on Father's Day afternoon, more storm activity and extremely heavy rainfall continue in the Plains. All threats of severe weather pose a risk in the Plains through Tuesday.<h2>Rainfall Threat</h2>Our forecast models are showing hefty rainfall totals in the Upper Midwest. Some places in South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin pose the chance of seeing over 5" of rainfall through Wednesday morning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/06/forecast precip-1718619783721.png">With over 5" of rain in the forecast, the Weather Prediction Center (WPC) issued a slight risk (level 2 out of 4) on both Monday and Tuesday. This indicates that multiple instances of flash flooding could be likely. Not only should you pay close attention to the severe weather alerts that may be issued, but also keep an eye out for flood warnings. Multiple flood watches have already been issued across Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin (see top of article).<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/06/2024-06-17 04-27-37-1718620074424.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Monday</h2>The Storm Prediction Center has issued a slight risk (level 2 out of 5) for severe weather for portions of the Interstate 90 corridor from Rapid City, SD to the Twin Cities, MN extending as far south as Nebraska and as far north as North Dakota.After the warm front brings morning convection to the upper Missouri Valley and Upper Midwest, an additional low will move through to strengthen storm activity into the late afternoon and early evening hours. Supercell thunderstorms will be possible in these regions, bringing an initial threat of tornadoes and large hail. Storms may attempt to cluster together as the evening progresses. Ultimately, you will want to be prepared to deal with the possibility of severe weather throughout the day on Monday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/06/forecast-1718629377393.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Tuesday</h2>The same, slow-moving system keeps the severe risk around for Tuesday. A slight risk (level 2 out of 5) reaches from Duluth, MN towards Hays, KS. The primary concerns will be afternoon storms bringing hail and strong winds. Extreme Rain & Severe Storms to the Midwest

The Post Fire started burning Saturday, June 15th during the afternoon and has quickly burned over 14,000 acres. Firefighters are working hard to continue to extinguish this fire by "working to establish perimeter fire lines around the fire's edges. Aircraft are being utilized to halt the fire's forward progress but are facing challenges due to limited visibility." Winds in southern California on Sunday gusted close to 60 mph, certainly not helping crews get the upper hand. Over 1,000 fire fighters and 7 helicopters are fighting this blaze. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1802417722611114294" src="https://x.com/Angeles_NF/status/1802417722611114294"></div>Evacuation Orders for over 1200 people are in place west of Interstate 5 between Pyramid Lake and Gorman, including the Hungry Valley Vehicular Recreation Area. An EVACUATION WARNING has been issued for areas south of Pyramid Lake between Old Ridge Route and the LA County line, including Paradise Ranch Estates. There is <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/tropical-watch-potential-area-of-development-in-the-western-gulf">another area</a> of low pressure to watch in the Tropics, this time in the Atlantic Basin near the Bahamas. There is a LOW chance for development in the next 7 days, with no chance of development through Wednesday. According to the National Hurricane Center A trough or an area of low pressure is forecast to form a few hundred miles northeast of the central Bahamas in a day or two. Environmental conditions could be conducive for some development of this system thereafter while it moves westward or west - northwestward. The system is forecast to approach the coast of the southeast United States on Thursday or Friday." <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/06/2024-06-17 04-43-21-1718621238620.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>A few showers and storms will be the focus through the next few days but if this low gets going our heaviest rainfall will be over Florida and the Bahamas on Thursday and Friday. Over three months of rain came down in just a few days in South Florida, swamping the streets. Time to put snow tires back on in Montana? Not quite, but a late-season winter storm could bring a wallop of snow to the Northern Rockies early this week as a cold, upper-level low moves over the region from Canada. Winter weather alerts have been issued from the Canadian border into Idaho and Montana for heavy snow. Snowfall totals will vary greatly depending on elevation, but generally, 6-15" of snow for those under warnings is likely. The heaviest snow is expected late Monday into early Tuesday, before things clear toward midweek.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/06/06-16_18z rockies to mid-1718587386192.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Our in-house forecast model shows the potential for over a foot of snow, though the definition of these large-scale models doesn't depict the big changes over a few miles due to mountain ranges. Some may see over a foot of snow, but it's likely to be quite high on the peaks/ridges.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/06/Screenshot 2024-06-17 044002-1718620841323.png">On a wider scale, the low-pressure system that's cooling the Rockies down enough for snowfall is going to intersect the warm Northern Plains on Monday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/06/06-16_rnc jet-1718587245860.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>This will bring clashing temperatures to the Plains, with highs in the 50s in Montana and 90s in the Midwest.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/06/temps-1718620898578.png">That clash in temperatures will help to support a severe weather chance in the upper Midwest. While the snow is falling in the Rockies, severe storms will be <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/plains-to-midwest-severe-threats-this-week">possible in the Upper Midwest</a>. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/06/Screenshot 2024-06-17 044156-1718620930703.png">

Heavy Late Season Snow Likely in the Northern Rockies

Atlantic Hurricane season started June 1 and runs through November. NOAA has released its forecast for the tropical season. The agency is calling for 17-25 named storms... and 8-13 hurricanes, of which 4-7 are forecast to be major hurricane strength, CAT 3 or stronger with sustained winds of 111 mph or stronger.<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/PXTsSghwXAU" start="0"></iframe></div>This is the highest forecast NOAA has ever issued in the initial outlook in May.&nbsp;There is an 85% chance of an above-average season in 2024. The Accumulated Cyclone Energy index, or ACE for short, is a forecasting metric that predicts strength and duration of wind speed; this year it is forecast to be the second highest ever on record.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/NOAA-1716473710687.jpg">This year is expected to be above average thanks to warm sea surface temperatures and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/la-nina-likely-to-return-for-hurricane-season">La Niña conditions returning just in time for the peak of Hurricane season</a>. There is over a 70% chance of La Niña formation during August - October. La Niña is categorized by cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, typically resulting in less wind shear over the Atlantic and Caribbean oceans. Less wind shear means hurricanes can thrive, rather than be torn apart by strong upper-level winds. In the Eastern Pacific, a La Niña Pattern typically spells below-average activity,<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.noaa.gov/news-release/noaa-predicts-below-normal-2024-central-pacific-hurricane-season"> which is what NOAA is predicting in 2024.</a><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/La nina-1716471321368.jpg">The other factors are warmer than average sea surface temperatures and an active West African Monsoon. Sea surface temperatures are so warm in the tropical Atlantic that we are about two months ahead of schedule for warmth.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/factors-1716470995099.jpg">The forecast is aligned with that of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/atlantic-hurricane-season-2024-expected-to-be-well-above-average">Colorado State University</a> which also calls for a well above average season.&nbsp;The official list only has 21 names and the higher end of NOAA's forecast calls for up to 25 storms. If forecasts pan out, there is an alternate list to supplement. The last time additional names were needed was during the record-setting 2020 season when La Niña conditions were also present.&nbsp;Below is the list of hurricane names we will go through first before we head into the alternative names list.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/names-1716471297613.jpg">As a reminder, these forecasts only account for the total number of storms, NOT potential paths or U.S. impacts. Hurricane Season 2024 Underway: Above Average Activity Expected

Heart-breaking scenes are pouring out of the Central Plains from numerous severe storms and tornadoes that touched down Saturday night and into early Sunday. Our Field Correspondent, Brandon Clement, spoke with a resident of Rogers, Arkansas who survived the tornado that went right through Rogers.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1794722656069226875" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1794722656069226875"></div>Over 45 tornadoes touched down between Saturday and Sunday.
