<p>Severe season is coming in like a lion this year! After severe chances Wednesday, ANOTHER trough will dig in around virtually the same spot. That will keep many of the same places in the crosshairs for strong to severe storms. </p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/2026-03-04 08-02-45-1772636585172.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>THURSDAY</h1><p>We have two days with two different forcing mechanisms to focus on. Thursday's will be the dryline. Often with dryline setups, the forcing isn't as strong, so there will be few storms. However, those fewer storms will have less competition for resources, making them a little more effective at becoming severe. Massive hail could be the biggest concern. However, the tornado threat will be there in West Texas and Oklahoma</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/Screenshot 2026-03-04 082931-1772638217642.png">The initial storms will merge into a cluster as they move northeast overnight. The severe threat will continue even after they merge.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/2026-03-04 08-30-54-1772638326415.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>FRIDAY</h1><p>The threat on Friday comes from a cold front sliding south. That should mean more numerous thunderstorms. It also means something else: wind shear. That will help organize more of those storms as they come together Friday afternoon. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/Screenshot 2026-03-04 084202-1772638931153.png">That's the separator between Thursday and Friday, wind dynamics. Severe Threat Increases Late this Week

<p>Storms have been rumbling through the plains early Wednesday. The strongest storms kicked out hailstones 1-2 inches in diameter Wednesday morning! That will be an appetizer for the severe threat unfolding for the rest of the day (and week...)</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/Screenshot 2026-03-04 073957-1772635438778.png"></p><h1>THE CAUSE</h1><p>A fairly meager front will slide into the area as temperatures climb once again this afternoon. With some areas, closing in on record highs, it doesn't take much of a front to cause problems. As that warm air runs into the frontal boundary, storms are expected to fill in from north to south throughout the day. </p><h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/Screenshot 2026-03-04 074538-1772635546581.png">The Threats</h1><p>Hail was easy to come by Wednesay morning, but all threats will be on the table this afternoon. Any storms that manage to remain discrete will be capable of producing a tornado. Damaging winds could threaten just about anyone that has a storm this afternoon, along with large hail. </p><h1>Timing</h1><p>The coverage is only going to increase this afternoon. Severe Weather Awareness Week 2026

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

<p>Now that we've entered Meteorological Spring, many out west have been feeling more like Summer with temperatures soaring into the 90's. Numerous records have fallen coming out of the weekend and into the workweek from the southwest to the south central U.S. More records look to continue falling this week.</p><p>An upper-level ridge that won't leave us alone is sliding to the east this week. That will keep the tranquil weather nearby and push temperatures into record territory.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/Screenshot 2026-03-02 090044-1772467252694.jpg">Temperatures have already entered record territory in many locations and will continue to spill east as we head into the rest of the week ahead. Over 100 locations could potentially break or tie records into the weekend.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/Screenshot 2026-03-03 081924-1772551175650.png">Temperatures across the southern plains will remain in the 80s.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/web4-1772624068341.png"></p><p>It's already warm in the southeast, with highs soaring into the upper 70's and low 80's. We'll creep closer to record territory as the week progresses, with numerous highs falling from Thursday through Saturday. Record Heat Rolls East This Week

<p>As we turn the page from an active winter with plenty of snow, this week will involve spring-like warmth moving into the Northeast. A couple of rounds of snow and heavy rain are likely, along with the potential for freezing rain and ice. Some portions of the Northeast have already seen 0.20" of ice in the last 24 hours.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/Screenshot20260303082318png-1772551494124.png"></p><p>With warmer air being ushered in, our next system will bring loads of rainfall to the northeast. However, the freezing line was simply lifted, it's not completely gone. With some freezing temps going into overnight hours, we can still see some of that ice buildup as well as some snowfall across northern New England.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/2026-03-04 06-26-58-1772623644604.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/web1-1772623747828.png"></p><p>Across most of the northeast, however, heavy rainfall is expected with our next system. Warmer temperatures will favor some of these high rainfall totals by the time we get to the end of the work week. The heaviest totals we're seeing will likely reside across the Ohio Valley. and the Mid-Atlantic region.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/web2-1772623949361.png"></p><p>It has been a snowy and cold winter across the Northeast. Northeast: Snow & Ice Winds Down, Heavy Rain Ahead

<p style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt; color: #454545;">Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

<p>A blood moon graced the skies this morning! Hopefully the cloud cover cooperated where you were.<br><br>What is a blood moon? It's another name for a total lunar eclipse, a phenomenon that occurs when a full moon passes directly through a planet's shadow, changing the bright white reflection to a much darker shade of red. This time, the dark red shade, known as totality, will last about an hour, while the Moon's shadow will gradually increase and decrease for about 90 minutes before and after totality. This means the entire event will last about 4 hours.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-25 121621-1772047002716.png"></p><p>This eclipse is known as a "total" lunar eclipse, named for when the entirety of the Moon gets covered by Earth's hard shadow, known as the umbra. It's different from a solar eclipse in that the Earth is between the Moon and Sun, as opposed to a solar eclipse when the Moon is between the Earth and Sun.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-25 121627-1772047012922.png"></p><p>Unfortunately for folks on the East Coast, the amount of time to see totality will be cut short, lasting only about 20-30 minutes (depending on your longitude) as the moon sets. Full eclipse times are in the image at the top of the page.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-25 121049-1772047025361.png"></p><p>For folks in Central, Mountain, or Pacific time zones, all of totality should be visible before the moon goes down. Lunar Eclipse Stuns Many Tuesday Morning

<p>This week brings some nice days to the southern plains and southwest, especially if you like the warmth. On Sunday, Chattanooga, Tennessee, tied a record high, reaching 79°! California set multiple records on Sunday, including Indio, which reached 98°!</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/SCA-1772422124039.png">The above-average warmth continues for the Southwest for several more days because of the blocking high-pressure system. Just like the Southern Plains, some relief could be coming with a low-pressure system passing by.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/Screenshot 2026-03-01 134712-1772398071527.png">The Southern Plains will see the record-warmth potential last into this weekend before a cold front arrives for some areas. However, the farther south you go, the higher chances you have of keeping the heat well into the start of the work week.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/web2-1772451264489.png"></p><p>The warmth is likely to lead to numerous records continuing to fall through Tuesday.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/web3-1772451285985.png"></p><p>Phoenix reached 90 degrees again on Saturday and 93 on Sunday and the 90s are likely through Monday afternoon.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/Screenshot 2026-03-01 173103-1772411468693.png"></p><p>Make sure to watch WeatherNation for the latest updates on the record-warmth.</p>

The highest storm surge reports were between 1-3 feet as Elsa made its way along the west coast of Florida. The highest surge was observed in Cedar Key, Florida with 2.68 foot surge.

<h2>Rainfall</h2>
Some of the highest rainfall reports from Elsa were up to nearly 1 foot of rain in Punta Gorda, Florida. Other observations along the west and Gulf coast got up to half  a foot to 11 inches.

Some of the heaviest rainfall reports were in the Florida Keys where Elsa brought rainfall rates up to 2-3 inches per hour at times.

<h2>Peak Wind Gusts</h2>
Some of the highest wind gusts were reported up to 70 mph in Key West. Tropical storm strength winds are anywhere between 39-74 mph as observed from these top locations in Florida and Georgia.
