That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

<p>The Midwest <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/severe-storms-flash-flooding-threaten-millions-across-the-plains-this-weekend"><em><u>has been hammered by severe weather this week, including multiple tornadoes and a derecho</u></em></a>! Another round of storms is expected Saturday, with high-end severe weather potential, including several strong tornadoes. Saturday's storms have already produced some very large hail across parts of the Central Plains.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/1-1781402570555.png"></p><p>A low pressure system moving through the Great Plains will tap into plentiful warmth and moisture, with high-end energy giving the potential for massive hail and hurricane force wind gusts.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/1-1781402603590.png"></p><p>Wind and hail threats are expected to be the most widespread hazards and could be significant (below), but several tornadoes are also possible, including an intense tornado or two (hatched region above).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/1-1781402635283.png"></p><p>As storms pushed into the Kansas City metro, winds did gusts up to 70-80 mph and a confirmed tornado touchdown north of Kansas City. For the rest of the night, the strong squall line pushes further southward into Kansas and Missouri producing more reports of winds and hail. </p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/BARON 5-1781402864165.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Flood Threat</h1><p>Intense precipitation rates are expected in Saturdays storms, producing rainfall rates of 1-2" per hour. Soils in these areas are already saturated from storms earlier in the week, which will allow for flooding to develop more quickly.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/1-1781402895247.png"></p><p>The WPC has issued a MODERATE (level 3 out of 4) excessive rainfall outlook for parts of Missouri and Kansas, meaning numerous flash flood incidents are expected. Severe Storms Target the Midwest Again Saturday

<p>Summer heat has been building around the East Coast to end the week, with a strong ridge of high pressure helping to produce record highs for areas from the Carolinas to New York state. As a series of fronts cuts into the heat, rounds of strong and severe storms will be possible.<br><br>After record heat on Friday, temperatures cooled down some on Saturday but more heat and humidity will fuel more severe chances on Sunday. A stronger front will end all of this heat by Monday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/1-1781303670264.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/1-1781402205988.png"></p><h1>Severe Storms</h1><p>Yet ANOTHER cold front is expected to move through the region over the weekend. The Storm Prediction Center is already highlighting the area from Burlington, VT down to the Southeast.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/1-1781402262933.png"></p><p>Storms are most likely to reach severe weather criteria in the afternoon hours, but some stronger storms are not out of the question starting in the late morning. Record Heat Fuels Severe Storms in the Northeast

<h1><strong>Atlantic</strong></h1><p>The first disturbance of the season in the Atlantic basin was highlighted by the National Hurricane Center on Wednesday this week. A broad low-pressure system has developed over the Bay of Campeche, associated with a westward-moving tropical wave currently over Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Environmental conditions appear only marginally favorable for development as it moves north along the western edge of the Gulf. The wave will have limited time to organize before it moves inland in eastern Mexico.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot 2026-06-13 061926-1781353175833.png">As moisture from the remnants of Cristina slams into a cold front, heavy rain and flooding could be an issue heading into next week for the South. Forecasts are calling for 3-5 inches of rain from Texas into the Deep South. Combined with the development of El Niño conditions, forecasters expect the basin to remain favorable for tropical cyclone formation through much of the season. NOAA’s seasonal outlook calls for an above-average Eastern Pacific hurricane season, with between 15 and 22 named storms possible. First Tropical Disturbance in the Atlantic Tracking Toward Mexico & Texas

<p>A surge of tropical moisture streaming north from the Gulf is expected to bring an increased risk of severe thunderstorms and flooding across parts of the central and southern United States through the weekend and into next week. The combination of hot temperatures, humid air, and a slow-moving weather pattern will create favorable conditions for repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms, some of which could become severe.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/1-1781401917257.png"></p><p></p><p>The threat for strong to severe storms is expected to develop across portions of the Plains, Midwest, and South. Storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail, and a few tornadoes, especially during the afternoon and evening hours when instability is at its peak. Tropical Moisture to Raise Flooding and Severe Concerns Across Central U.S.

<p>El Niño has arrived! It didn't take long for La Niña conditions this spring to quickly be replaced in the equatorial Pacific over the last few months. A big surge of warm water has now reached the surface after traveling in deeper waters for months, taking sea surface temperatures up to the level needed for an El Niño designation.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="2065059465326444738" src="https://x.com/NOAAComms/status/2065059465326444738"></div><p><br>El Niño is expected to continue for the foreseeable future (below), and will likely to continue to strengthen through the summer into fall and possibly winter (top of page). You've probably heard the term "super" El Niño mentioned - which is the same as a "very strong" El Niño in the graphic above. "Super" El Niño isn't a term officially recognized, but seeing temperatures that warm in the Pacific typically mean bigger impacts to global weather patterns, including hurricane season and the winter forecast in the United States.<br><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot 2026-06-11 102033-1781194881870.png"></p><p>A strong or very strong El Niño is different than a weak or moderate El Niño in terms of impacts. A very strong El Niño typically leads to a tighter and stronger sub-tropical jet, which increases wind shear in the Atlantic. If a moderate El Niño is in place through hurricane season, it's impacts in the Atlantic could be less pronounced. El Niño Forms, Very Strong El Niño Likely Late 2026

<p>The Midwest has been dealing with several rounds of severe storms this week, with widespread damaging winds in Chicago, Illinois, and surrounding areas on Wednesday from a derecho. Thursday was another incredibly active day, starting with a powerful bowing segment in Iowa that produced gusts to 90 mph! By Thursday afternoon, numerous strong tornadoes formed in Illinois before tracking into Indiana.</p><h1>Thursday</h1><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot 2026-06-12 080923-1781273374042.png"></p><p>The Storm Prediction Center issued a <strong>MODERATE</strong> (level 4 out of 5) risk for severe thunderstorms on Thursday, and the forecast appears to have verified with numerous reports of intense winds and tornadoes across Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Tornado warnings are in the image above, with many warnings verified. A loop of the radar from Chicago (KLOT) shows numerous confirmed tornado warnings, and even a tornado emergency (purple polygon).</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Jun 11 Radar Loop Video-1781273466817.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Storm surveys will need to be completed to determine the strength of these tornadoes, though on appearance and damage alone, it seems like these were intense (EF2 and above). We will keep you updated on damage surveys as they are conducted. <p>Heat advisories have been expanding across the country as we prepare for dangerously hot temperatures. For some, heat index values could reach 105+ degrees!</p><h2>Eastern Heat</h2><p>We're still tracking a large ridge of high pressure. Previously, heat alerts were in effect across the Central Plains. This ridge eventually shifts East, and cities along the I-95 corridor could feel some of their warmest temps of the season.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot 2026-03-29 060538-1781268840659.png"></p><p>Newly issued<strong> Heat Advisories </strong>have been issued into the Tri-State area. This includes New York City and the Philadelphia metro areas. NASA Names Artemis III Astronauts

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

Tropical Moisture Brings Increased Flood Risk

<p>Severe storms developed today, as a particularly dangerous situation unfolded across the Northern Plains. The Storm Prediction Center issued this PDS for large hail and damaging winds up to 100 mph. Sunday, there were multiple hail reports of 3-inch hailstones or greater, with Redig, SD, seeing hailstones up to 3.25"!</p><h1>OVERNIGHT</h1><p></p><p>The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a Moderate risk for severe weather across the northern plains through the overnight hours. Minot and Hettenger are at moderate risk for storms, meaning these areas will have the best chance of seeing large hail and damaging winds.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/overnight-1780881587764.png">All threats will be possible with these storms. There are even a few areas highlighted for significant winds and significant hailstones.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/overnight 2-1780881609982.png">A few storms will hold together through the overnight hours. Damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes will all be possible. But even people hundreds of miles inland are at risk from high winds, flooding rains, severe weather, and tornadoes. Even after the storm passes, the lasting threat of flooding and power outages could occur days or weeks after a storm hits.</p><p>Though Hurricane Melissa became one of the strongest hurricanes to ever make landfall in the basin, it was the first time in a decade that a hurricane did not make landfall in the U.S. That doesn't mean we were without impacts. Let's take a look back:</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/i3WsK0L2JP8" start="0"></iframe></div><p></p><p><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/noaa-predictions-for-the-2026-hurricane-season"><strong>WHAT'S THE FORECAST THIS SEASON?</strong></a> <span style="color: rgb(40, 42, 58)">NOAA has released </span><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.noaa.gov/news-release/noaa-predicts-below-normal-2026-atlantic-hurricane-season">its predictions for the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season</a><span style="color: rgb(40, 42, 58)">. They are calling for a </span><strong><em><span style="color: rgb(40, 42, 58)">below</span></em></strong><span style="color: rgb(40, 42, 58)"> normal season with 8-14 named storms, 3-6 hurricanes, and 1-3 major hurricanes. For probability, they predict a 35% chance of a near-normal season, a 10% chance of an above-normal season, and a 55% chance of a below-normal season.</span></p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/2rztDcYFRbM" start="0"></iframe></div><p></p><p><span style="color: rgb(40, 42, 58)">NOAA cites several factors in their forecast, including the burgeoning El Ni­­ño, and possible Super Ni­­ño, shaping up in the tropical Pacific. The expectation for an El Ni­­ño event during the peak of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane season is a big factor in keeping numbers lower than previous years, along with near-normal sea surface temperatures, which have been much above average in recent seasons.</span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(40, 42, 58)">Why does El Ni­­ño typically reduce hurricane activity in the Atlantic Basin? The warmer water in the equatorial Pacific often leads to a more energetic subtropical jet, leading to stronger winds in the upper atmosphere over the Caribbean. Surface winds in the Caribbean most often come from the east, known as the trade winds. When these winds lie under strong winds from the opposite (or even the same direction), it leads to strong wind shear, which tears hurricanes apart.</span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(40, 42, 58)">Forecasters at Colorado State University also predicted a below-average season. Hear their reasoning:</span></p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/PrEEwxSK5tU" start="0"></iframe></div><p>While seasonal outlooks give us some idea of what to expect, there is no way to know for certain just what the season will have in store for YOUR area.&nbsp; Seasonal outlooks cannot forecast exactly when, where, or if a storm will strike. <span style="color: rgb(40, 42, 58)">Even below-average seasons can have major impacts. All it takes is one storm making landfall for it to be a devastating season in the U.S.</span></p><p>In preparation for the upcoming season, NOAA's National Hurricane Center is incorporating new tools and processes to keep the public better informed. There's A LOT of jargon, phrases, and information that can make understanding tropical cyclones difficult. Understanding the basics may help when a storm threatens.</p><p><strong>WATCHES VS. WARNINGS</strong> Do you know the difference between a watch and a warning? What about all of the alerts issued during the tropical season? Whenever a tropical cyclone (a tropical depression, tropical storm, or hurricane) or a subtropical storm has formed in the Atlantic or eastern North Pacific, the NOAA National Hurricane Center (NHC) issues tropical cyclone advisory products<em>&nbsp;at least</em> every 6 hours at 5 am, 11 am, 5 pm, and 11 pm EDT. A WATCH is issued when hurricane, tropical storm, or storm surge conditions are expected within 48 hours. A WARNING is issued when life-threatening conditions are expected within 36 hours.</p><p><strong>WHAT IS THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE?</strong> The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is a 1 to 5 rating based on a hurricane's sustained wind speed, with 5 being the highest. This scale estimates potential property damage. Hurricanes reaching Category 3 and higher are considered major hurricanes because of their potential for significant loss of life and damage. Category 1 and 2 storms are still dangerous, however, and require preventative measures.&nbsp; (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshws.php"><em>Source: NHC</em></a>)</p><p>When a tropical system reaches winds of 39mph or greater, it's given a name to better track and communicate its risks. The 2026 name list may look a little familiar. Here's why:</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cLoG9Qce7C8" start="0"></iframe></div><p><strong>UNDERSTANDING THE FORECAST "CONE"</strong> Listening to forecast details can mean the difference between being prepared and caught off guard. Before a storm strikes, you'll often see a forecast "cone" to represent the expected forecast track of a system. The forecast cone <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutcone.shtml"><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">represents the probable track of the center of a tropical cyclone</span></a><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">. The width of the cone is based on historical forecast error percentage and uncertainty in the forecast. In 2024, NHC released an experimental version of the cone to not just communicate the center track, but also show the widespread nature of potential impacts. They plan to fine-tune and continue to use this concurrently until it becomes the primary forecast.</span></p><p><strong>WHAT PART OF A HURRICANE IS THE MOST POWERFUL?</strong> When a hurricane threatens landfall, most often the most impacts will be felt on the "front right quadrant" in relation to the direction of movement. Impacts can and will be felt on all "sides" of a storm, but the threat of the highest winds, storm surge, and indirect impacts, such as tornadoes, is often increased in the front right quadrant.</p><p><strong>LIVE INLAND? YOU AREN'T IMMUNE TO HURRICANES!</strong> Even if you live nowhere near a coastline, impacts from tropical systems can still occur. This lesson was learned during Hurricane Helene with historic, catastrophic flooding as far north as North Carolina. Inland rain and water are the deadliest parts of Tropical Storms, and the impacts can spread far away from the immediate coastline.</p><p><strong>UNDERSTANDING STORM SURGE</strong> Along the coast, storm surge is often the greatest threat to life and property from a hurricane.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/surge/">Storm surge</a> has come along with some of the most powerful storms in history.</p><p>Still have questions? Meteorologist Jesse Kelley is excited to join the talented staff at Weather Nation. Jesse spent most of his childhood in Birmingham, Alabama. The state of Alabama is prone to seeing various types of weather from severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and winter weather. For college, Jesse attended the University of South Alabama where he received his degree in Broadcast Meteorology along with minors in Math and Geography. <p>The Storm Prediction Center has issued a severe risks for Saturday and Sunday. Scattered storms capable of producing large hail and damaging winds are possible for portions of the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley into the Northeast. Today, wind guts did reach up to 60-70 mph. Severe Storms for the Northeast This Weekend

<p>Strong storms have been surging across the Plains and Midwest this week, producing lots of hail and strong winds, with a tornado or two. The threat continues through the overnight hours as the low-pressure system continues to slide farther east toward the Great Lakes.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot 2026-06-05 201844-1780712330861.png"><br></p><p>The <strong>SLIGHT</strong> risk for severe storms extends from Nebraska to Illinois, with another <strong>SLIGHT</strong> risk for storms moving across Wisconsin. The significant severe potential sticks around, too. Severe Storms Target the Midwest Overnight

<p>Charge your camera batteries! Aurora Borealis, aka the Northern Lights, could be gracing the skies over North America Thursday night into Friday morning.<br><br>An X-Class solar flare on Wednesday (top of page) sent high energy particles from the sun toward earth, initially causing radio communications issues Wednesday morning and afternoon. The CME takes longer to arrive than the initial burst of energy from the flare, which is why more than 24 hours later were anticipating the potential for Aurora to appear.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot 2026-06-04 111544-1780594141267.png"></p><p>The Space Weather Prediction Center has issued their forecast (above) for where Aurora could be visible under ideal conditions (dark, cloud free skies). Unfortunatley some areas that are expected to have potential to see Aurora, will also have storms in the area. <h2 style="text-align: center">It's <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/hurricane-prep-week-2026"><strong><em><u>Hurricane Prep Week on WeatherNation</u></em></strong></a> for the first week of the Atlantic Hurricane season!</h2><p>The Atlantic Basin is starting on the quiet side, while the Eastern Pacific has multiple disturbances. One of which is becoming the first named storm of the year and others that could have impacts to land this weekend.</p><h1>Atlantic</h1><p>The Atlantic is starting the season with no activity expected through the first week. A big burst of Saharan Dust is providing plenty of dry air, which could impact air quality and visibility in the Caribbean and parts of Florida through the week ahead.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/BARON 5-1780626179667.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Eastern Pacific</h1><p>The first tropical storm of the season formed in the Eastern Pacific on Wednesday morning. The basin could have its second system of the season this weekend, with impacts in Mexico possible. The NHC gives the southern wave near Mexico a high chance to develop. Another outlook region, also with high development potential, has been added along the SW coast of Mexico. We'll be monitoring this region closely and will provide updates.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/1-1780626194213.png"></p><p></p><h2>Amanda</h2><p>Tropical Storm Amanda has formed in the eastern Pacific Ocean, becoming the first named storm of the 2026 eastern Pacific hurricane season. The National Hurricane Center designated Amanda as a tropical storm on Wednesday. At this time, the storm poses no threat to land.</p><p>As of the latest advisory, Amanda was packing maximum sustained winds of <strong>45 mph</strong> while moving northwest over the open Pacific. Forecast guidance indicates the storm should strengthen somewhat during the next couple of days before encountering less favorable environmental conditions and weakening later this week into the weekend.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/1-1780626253064.png"></p><p></p><p>Amanda is currently moving over sufficiently warm ocean waters that can support tropical cyclone development. In the short term, manageable wind shear and ample tropical moisture should allow for some additional organization and strengthening.</p><p>However, as the storm tracks farther northwest, it is forecast to move into cooler sea surface temperatures and increasing atmospheric stability, which should gradually weaken the storm.</p><p>Amanda's development comes as forecasters continue to monitor unusually warm waters across portions of the eastern Pacific and the ongoing development of El Nino conditions. El Nino years often favor increased tropical cyclone activity in the eastern Pacific basin, and</p><p>That means Amanda is likely just the first chapter in what could become a busy season across the eastern Pacific.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/1-1780626331928.png"></p><p></p><p>The names for the Eastern Pacific are as follows. Tropical storm Boris could form this weekend near Mexico.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot 2026-06-03 090216-1780498942901.png"></p><p>Sea surface temperatures for the Pacific are already very warm for the start of the season. The El Niño pattern showcases the potential for higher activity across the Eastern Pacific. NOAA's seasonal outlook calls for an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/Epac_hurr/index.shtml">above-average eastern Pacific hurricane season</a> with 15 to 22 named storms, including as many as 9 hurricanes and up to 9 major hurricanes.
