Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. We're hoping many Thanksgiving travelers have made it home, because this next system has brought rain, ice, and snowfall from the Mid-South to the Northeast. The combination of an upper-level low drawing in cold air and a surface low pulling in warm Gulf moisture will set some of us up for ice, others for rain, and many for heavy snowfall. So gear up for what you can expect in your neighborhood. Kansas and Nebraska already saw 2-4" of snowfall on Monday morning.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1995549367382753424" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1995549367382753424"></div><h2>Overall Set-Up</h2>Several components come into play when we talk about different types of wintry precipitation, and the temperature profile of the atmosphere is one of the most important. In this forecast, a strong upper-level low will draw in cold air aloft. At the surface, a low will pull in warm Gulf moisture. What happens between these layers determines whether precipitation falls as rain, freezing rain, sleet, a rain/snow mix, or snow.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-01 041042-1764587449453.png">Winter alerts are starting to trim back as the low pressure system pushes farther north and east, but many remain in effect through tonight.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-02 135101-1764708672189.png"><h2>Forecast Timing</h2>Based on current timing, snow will reach the Northeast through Tuesday night before the system exits offshore early Wednesday morning.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/2025-12-02 11-14-48-1764692115278.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Snowfall totals will vary depending on how cold the temperatures get throughout the event. The heaviest totals are expected to climb over 6 inches in the Northeast. When forecasts show totals approaching 0.25" or more, power outages become possible, and travel can become nearly impossible.

Gulf Low turns Coastal Low as Millions Brace for Plowable Snow

DENVER, CO - The "Mile High" city finally recorded its first snowfall of the season two days after Thanksgiving as a strong trough moved through the northern Rockies. To count as measurable snow, it needs to accumulate to at least one-tenth of an inch, which the Denver airport doubled with that quick round of snowfall Saturday morning. The first snow date of November 29th makes it Denver's 2nd latest start to the snow season on record, with 2021 being the only year with a later first snow.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-29 082401-1764430054403.png">The snowfall also ended a long streak of snowless days, tied for the third-longest since record-keeping began.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-29 082406-1764430062849.png">Looking ahead, more snow is in store for the Denver area and the Palmer Divide, so winter weather advisories have been issued for 2-7" of snowfall.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-02 133241-1764707663312.png"><h1>Forecast Snow</h1>Another push of snowfall is expected later this week. We're in for a round of clippers that'll rip through the north throughout this week. Overall, the season fell within the predicted ranges for named storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes issued in&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.noaa.gov/news-release/prediction-remains-on-track-for-above-normal-atlantic-hurricane-season">NOAA’s seasonal outlooks</a>."For the first time in a decade, not a single hurricane struck the U.S. this season, and that was a much needed break,” said Neil Jacobs, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. "Still, a tropical storm caused damage and casualties in the Carolinas, distant hurricanes created rough ocean waters that caused property damage along the East Coast, and neighboring countries experienced direct hits from hurricanes."<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/IhS5UIupb2I" start="0"></iframe></div>“The 2025 season was the first year NOAA’s National Hurricane Center incorporated Artificial Intelligence model guidance into their forecasts,” added Jacobs. “The NHC performed exceedingly well when it came to forecasting rapid intensification for some of the more impactful storms and provided critical decision support for our Caribbean partners.”The Atlantic basin produced 13 named storms (winds of 39 mph or greater), of which five became hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or greater), including four major hurricanes with winds reaching 111 mph or greater. The remnants of Barry added to the catastrophic flooding events in southern Texas on the Fourth of July.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-26 140753-1764191281552.png">Chantal was the only storm to make landfall in the U.S., bringing excessive rainfall and flooding to North Carolina.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-26 140859-1764191350109.png">Hurricane Erin was the first Category 5 storm of the season and brought storm surge and tropical storm conditions to the North Carolina Outer Banks and rough surf and rip currents along the East Coast. Erin underwent rapid intensification, and is tied for the fifth-fastest 24-hour increase in maximum sustained winds on record, from 75 mph to 160 mph. Erin also tied for the third-fastest 24-hour pressure drop in the Atlantic basin on record, dropping 83 millibars from 998 mb to 915 mb.&nbsp;Hurricane Humberto became the second Category 5 hurricane, and soon after,&nbsp; Hurricane Imelda developed and became the final storm of September.&nbsp;Humberto was helpful in pulling Imelda out into the Atlantic and away from the U.S. coast. Still, despite the fact that they were thousands of miles away, they still brought coastal erosion to the Outer Banks for North Carolina.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-26 141013-1764191422252.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-26 141148-1764191520342.png">Hurricane Melissa developed into the third Category 5 hurricane of the season, and became one of the strongest Atlantic basin hurricane landfalls on record when it made landfall in southwestern Jamaica on October 28, bringing extensive damage to Jamaica, Hispaniola, and eastern Cuba. Melissa was the fourth storm to undergo rapid intensification this year, with a 115-mph wind increase and a 90 millibar decrease in central pressure in a 72-hour period ending at 11 a.m. EDT on October 28.&nbsp;Four days before Melissa’s landfall in Jamaica, the NHC projected a path over western Jamaica, a forecast that ended up with a track difference of only about 13 miles. “NHC’s intensity forecasts for Melissa outperformed every model at nearly every lead time and provided almost three days of advance notice that Melissa would make landfall in Jamaica as a powerful Category 5 hurricane,” said Michael Brennan, Ph.D., director, NOAA’s National Hurricane Center. “This lead time was remarkable because it was the first time NHC forecasted a hurricane to reach Category 5 intensity from such a low initial intensity when the forecast was first issued.”<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-26 141250-1764191579687.png"><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/xyG0HraZqRI" start="0"></iframe></div><hr><h2 style="text-align: start">Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season</h2>Hurricane season activity was near-normal for both the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/tcr/index.php?season=2025&amp;basin=epac">Eastern Pacific basin</a> and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/tcr/index.php?season=2025&amp;basin=cpac">Central Pacific basin</a> and fell within predicted ranges, respectively.&nbsp;The Eastern Pacific basin hurricane season produced 18 named storms, with nine becoming hurricanes and three intensifying to major hurricane status. Two named storms formed in the Central Pacific basin, with one, Iona, becoming a major hurricane well south of Hawaii. Atlantic Hurricane Season Closes Near Normal

GULF COAST - Starting along the Gulf coast, a low-pressure system has emerged to bring soaking rain to our Gulf states through the overnight hours, to the Southeast Coast on Tuesday morning, and through the Atlantic Seaboard on Tuesday.This surface low will pull in tropical moisture and produce downpours across the South and Southeast, where temperatures will be warm enough to support rain and even a few thunderstorms. On the northern side of the system, ice and snow will become an issue across portions of the Mid-South, which you can read more about <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/gulf-low-bringing-heavy-precipitation-across-the-nation">here.</a> As mentioned above, rain has begun and will continue to saturate the south into Tuesday before paralleling the Atlantic Coast on Tuesday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/12-01 rse to rne-1764644703384.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The Storm Prediction Center has kept a MARGINAL risk for severe storms in the panhandle of Florida through Tuesday. The risk of a tornado or two will be there, along with damaging straight-line winds.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/web1-1764692285197.png">With deep Gulf moisture and embedded thunderstorms, heavy rain may oversaturate soils and lead to isolated flash flooding. However, this is largely beneficial rainfall as these areas have been struggling to get much rain recently. Gulf Low To Produce Rain & Storms Along Coast

When it rains it pours, right? Another outbreak of Arctic air will invade the northern tier of the country, just days after the most recent burst. Areas around the high plains were waking up to subzero temperatures Monday morning, with the midweek dose looking just as potent. This is the coldest start to December in Fort Wayne's history!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-01 093506-1764606918872.png">As the door opens to the Arctic air, highs will plummet by Wednesday and into Thursday. Some areas will wake up below zero, like in the Twin Cities, Thursday morning. When you factor in a light breeze, the wind chill will tumble into the -20 to -30 range!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-01 200230-1764644565151.png">This will likely be good enough to set new record lows late this week. Another Blast of Cold Air On the Way

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. It is that time of year again—when millions of Americans hit the road or the skies to connect with friends and family. AAA is expecting a record number of travelers this year, surpassing the record-breaking 2024. An upper-level trough moving through the Great Lakes will head to the Northeast to bring rain, snow, winds, and lake effect snow this Thanksgiving.<h2>TIMING</h2>A low-pressure system working over the Great Lakes and northeast will continue to produce heavy snowfall, especially when our cold north-westerly winds get cranking over the warm Great Lakes that remain unfrozen.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/2025-11-27 08-16-49-1764256664379.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>AMOUNTS</h2>Some areas of the lower Great Lakes have already received more than seven inches of snowfall with this setup. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-28 075549-1764341761306.jpg">Winter weather alerts remain in place issued across the eastern shores of the Great Lakes through Friday. Areas in southeast Houston quickly took cover as a tornado-warned storm clipped some of the northeast suburbs. Multiple people saw this on the ground, with confirmation coming from radar that afternoon, as well. A low-pressure system blowing through the Upper Midwest has produced over a foot of snow and winds up to nearly 80 mph! This system will slow down for these areas for about a day before our next system moves in Friday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-26 110411-1764180296343.png"><h1>Snow Outlook</h1>Widespread Winter Weather Alerts have been ending across the Great Lakes for this round of snow, but the next ones will quickly get issued for Friday and Saturday's snow. Heavy snow, with rates of 1-2" per hour, combined with wind gusts upwards of 40-50 mph, will make driving extremely dangerous. Whiteout conditions could make travel nearly impossible.Blizzard Warnings remain in place for portions of Wisconsin and Michigan. Tuesday's storms brought damage to some of the communities of the southeastern U.S. As the front marches east overnight and into Tuesday, the Storm Prediction Center has downgraded the risk for severe weather to MARGINAL (level 1 out of 5) across portions of Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-25 195033-1764125449340.png"><h2>Storm Timing</h2>Storms continue to move east along the cold front overnight. Hurricane Melissa was a devastating category 5 storm that made landfall in Jamaica as one of the strongest systems on record in the Atlantic Basin.A dropsonde recorded a wind gust of 252 mph shortly before landfall, which was verified this week by NSF NCAR (U.S. National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research) to be accurate, making it the strongest gust ever recorded in a tropical cyclone.WeatherNation Meteorologist Rob Bradley discusses the data and Melissa's intense winds with hurricane researcher Andy Hazelton, who was working the data position on the reconnaissance flight that recorded the record gust.<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/n8DyYwpvi0w" start="0"></iframe></div>What are meso-vortices? A cut-off low will be moving out of southern California, bringing a surge of deep moisture to the Four Corners this weekend through next week. This low will bring rounds of showers and thunderstorms.&nbsp;Communities across northwest New Mexico, southeast Utah, southwest Colorado, and northeast Arizona could an abundant amount of rain, with some areas picking up over an inch of rain by the end of the weekend.&nbsp;<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/2025-11-22 08-09-43-1763824217158.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>In the mountains, snow has been piling up with 2-9" of snow reported across multiple states on Friday. Higher elevations are cold enough for accumulating mountain snow once again, which may create tricky travel conditions over passes and high-country roadways throughout a busy week for travel.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-22 081034-1763824255136.png"><h2>Forecast</h2>Rain and snow chances will persist throughout the weekend, as the system moves to the Northeast. Heavy snow will return to the mountains, with difficult travel, especially on I-70 in Colorado. A strong storm system that brought severe storms and flooding rain to Texas and Oklahoma is on the move. The trough is moving east with more impactful weather before it heads into the Atlantic Saturday afternoon.Severe storms are possible along the cold front tonight through Saturday morning from Kentucky into Mississippi. Wind damage is expected to be the primary hazard, so be sure to secure any loose objects outdoors.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/1-1763781379997.png">Scattered heavy downpours are expected to persist north of the low across the Midwest and Ohio Valley tonight. Severe storms could form into the overnight hours. CALIFORNIA - The middle of November has been active on the west coast, with multiple storm systems tracking into California over the last ten days. Another low is taking aim at the Golden State to start the weekend, with flash flood potential elevated around Los Angeles Thursday, before the heaviest rain moves into the mountains and deserts. Heavy snow is expected as well, prompting winter weather alerts into the Sierra Nevada Mountains and in Southern California.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/New Baron Video 3-1763694575745.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Heavy rain will move down the coast from Central California into Southern California throughout the night into early Friday. As the low stalls just offshore, additional rounds of rain and snow linger in Southern California through midday Saturday before the low finally moves east, leading to clearing skies.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-20 071516-1763650396917.png">Southern California could see several inches of heavy rainfall, which may lead to a flooding risk, especially because we have had a lot of recent rainfall. The higher elevations can expect up to five to ten with localized amounts of 16 inches of snowfall.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/1-1763694483048.png">The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) has issued two slight (level 2 out of 4) threats for Southern California to see heavy rainfall and flooding Thursday through Friday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/New Baron Video 3-1763681671126.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The National Weather Service has also added winter storm warnings for the Riverside County Mountains and San Bernardino County mountains for Thursday through Saturday, with the heaviest snowfall expected Thursday night into Friday morning.
