The dry time has been a little hard to enjoy the last week or two in South Florida. While this is the rainy season, and we're making up for a slow start to it, you can still roll your eyes at what the extended forecasts have looked like recently. In fact, some spots in South Florida have already had their wettest start to September, including Miami.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-16 163631-1758062210080.png">On the other end of the spectrum, some northern Florida spots have really missed out, making it the driest start to September in areas such as Gainesville and Tallahassee.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-16 163641-1758062216443.png">So why? Just because Florida likes to have the most fun? Well, actually, a frontal boundary keeps these storms coming for days. While we've had a couple of days of relief, more moisture is in the forecast for South Florida.That, along with a TON of moisture to work with, is attempting to catch up some drought-stricken areas of the Sunshine State. The Drought Monitor updated on Thursday and had some pretty sizeable improvements in South Florida.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/2025-09-18 10-51-54-1758207184122.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>So while it might be easy to complain about beach plans constantly getting ruined, it has its benefits. Our biggest concern is the lightning threat associated with any Florida thunderstorm, but especially this time of year, with people outdoors. Anytime it rains this heavily, of course, the flash flooding threat will be there as well. Some areas could receive another 3-5 inches, or even more, before the rain chances start to back off next week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/web4-1758207272039.png">

Florida Rainfall: Nuisance or Beneficial?

Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

Consistent rainfall is moving south to north in the southwest U.S. for the end of the week. Southern California will begin drying out Thursday evening as more moisture spreads into Northern California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/fribamsca-1758216430102.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The rain will be a welcome sight for many in California. Downtown LA hadn't seen rain since the beginning of JUNE! The final count of 105 days isn't close to their longest streak ever, but that's not a bad thing.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-18 112305-1758216194410.png">The Baron forecast model depicts pockets of 3-4 inches of rain through Friday, especially in the mountains around Southern California and in the Sierra.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-18 050000-1758193278094.png">The tropical nature of the rainfall is likely to lead to some flooding. The southern Central Valley out to the Colorado River, including much of southern California, is included in a Slight Risk (Level 2) Excessive Rainfall Outlook on Thursday, while the higher threat shifts north to the Sierra on Friday. Mario Sends Tropical Moisture to California, Flooding Possible

CENTRAL U.S - A trough that came in from the Pacific, moved over the Rockies, and is now in the Plains has been responsible for severe storms across the High Plains all week. It's now pushing into the Midwest and Southern Plains, ushering a slow-moving cold front through the area.Related: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/north-dakota-breaks-yearly-tornado-record">Dakota Tornado Record Falls Over the Weekend</a>The front is moving southward, bringing the threat of more hailstones and damaging winds. A level two risk (SLIGHT) is in effect for Thursday from Iowa to the Panhandle of Texas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-18 111638-1758215807511.png">Storms are expected to continue for most of Thursday along the frontal boundary, with more intense storms in the afternoon as daytime heating provides additional energy and lift. Scattered storms will continue along the front overnight into Friday, with a few more heavy downpours expected Friday afternoon.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/fribams-1758215907945.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Rainfall rates could surpass 1-2" per hour in these slow moving thunderstorms, resulting in pockets of 2-4 inches of accumulation. This could lead to isolated flash flooding.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-17 192042-1758158454292.png">The WPC has issued excessive rainfall outlooks for this isolated flood chance for Thursday and Friday, between west Texas and northern Mississippi.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-18 053746-1758195612299.png">Always use caution with flood waters, as you never know how deep the water is. Out in the Eastern Pacific, a broad area of low pressure is producing a large area of showers and thunderstorms. The NHC has good confidence in the development of a tropical depression in the next day or two. The next name up on the Pacific hurricane season names list is Narda.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Web1-1758204031586.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Web2-1758206462535.png">Regardless of its likely development, this new system is trending into cooler waters regardless. It's north-westward trajectory will potentially stunt any further development beyond a tropical depression/storm.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Web1-1758205752813.png">However, forecast models are rather sporadic in the direction this system goes. Some send it meandering out to sea, while a few take it further north. A similar track we've seen this Pacific hurricane season with hurricane Lorena and more recently, tropical storm Mario, where residual moisture after these storms dissipated tracked tropical moisture into the southern U.S.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Web1-1758206076086.png">Now, this isn't calls to press the proverbial red "panic" button. Regardless if moisture makes it's way to the U.S., any tropical depression or storm will have been dissipated long before. It'll simply be something we'll watch closely into the weekend. Reminder that we're getting over the final little peak of the Pacific hurricane season. More Activity Churning in the Eastern Pacific

We are now a week after the climatological peak of Atlantic Hurricane Season. Conditions are slowly becoming more active in the Atlantic as Gabrielle is churning in the Central Atlantic while another tropical wave is expected to emerge from western Africa this weekend. <h1>Gabrielle</h1>Tropical Storm Gabrielle is in the Central Atlantic and is expected to strengthen in the coming days as turns northeast this weekend, likely to pass Bermuda to the east. People with interests in Bermuda should monitor this storm, as direct and indirect impacts are still possible.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-18 044732-1758192491294.png">On Wednesday, the NHC was highlighting two tropical waves emerging from Africa, but one of those waves is not likely to develop so that area has been removed. The remaining region highlights the potential development for a wave expected to move off the coast of Africa this weekend. Conditions will be hostile for this tropical wave for some time as Saharan Dust (dry air) is expected to continue to surge in this area.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-18 044825-1758192515950.png"><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/New Baron Video 3-1758140698761.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Do not let your guard down! September is historically the peak of hurricane season, and ocean conditions remain favorable for additional development. However, the NHC urges residents along the Atlantic basin to monitor updates closely.<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/W2bhqfX0B0A" start="0"></iframe></div>What is slightly concerning are the water temperatures in the Gulf. Right now, they are 1°C warmer than they usually are for this time of the year. That being said, it's been tough to get anything over those warm waters so far this season-let's hope that continues.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-13 051452-1757762098585.jpg">As always, preparedness is key. Whether or not this particular system develops into a named storm, it serves as a reminder that the Atlantic remains active and that the window for tropical threats is far from closed. Gabrielle Churns in the Atlantic, Another Tropical Wave Emerges

Grab the pumpkin spice and apple cider donuts, fall foliage has started to grace some areas across the United States, with more developing this week! The latest forecast from <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.explorefall.com/fall-foliage-map">Explore Fall</a> (top of page) shows peak color emerging across the higher elevations of the Colorado Rockies, and the Beartooth and Wind River Ranges in Wyoming over the next seven days (September 15th - 21st). <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-17 190824-1758158004265.png">Color has already been showing some for areas in the map above (yellow and orange areas), mostly in the Rockies and Cascades. In fact, we've seen the Bigtooth Maples change quite a bit in the Wasatch Mountains near Salt Lake City!<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1964055938010067402" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1964055938010067402"></div>The most 30 days before the appearance of fall color are the most important for vibrancy during the peak season, but drought conditions can also lead to more muted color or variable conditions.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-08 105237-1757350392233.png">For great fall color, sunny days with cool, crisp nights are preferable. Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. NORTH CAROLINA - These abandoned houses were no match for the powerful swells generated by the Mid-Atlantic coastal low, which brought high surf, flooding, and heavy rain to the Outer Banks.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1968155451767337227" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1968155451767337227"></div>Since 2020, 12 homes have been swept away into the Atlantic Ocean in the Outer Banks, including this latest event, as well as the large swells from Hurricane Erin back in August. Why are so many homes being swept away, you may ask? In many cases, what protected a house decades ago is no longer sufficient because the shore has receded, sea levels are higher, and strong storms have been more frequent or powerful.<h2>Forecast Rainfall</h2>Arguably, the biggest impact of this low spinning onshore will be the rainfall, especially where it falls. Over the last couple of days, these areas have been inundated with an excessive amount of rain, with the largest totals staying in Virginia and Maryland.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-17 134538-1758138342706.png">An excessive rainfall outlook has been issued through tonight for rainfall totals for any additional flooding possible in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia, but the heaviest of the rain has already occurred.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-17 134803-1758138517386.png"><h1>Forecast Winds</h1>It might not be "tropical," but the highest wind gusts could approach tropical-storm-force at times. It looks like it might not be the wind that causes a ton of problems, but the direction of the wind: coastal flooding and rip current risks could pose some dangerous problems at times. Coastal inundation is only expected to approach a foot or two in low-lying, susceptible areas of the coast but the rip current risk is high along the shorelines.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Web1-1758107888500.png">

There's a new state record in North Dakota after this weekend's severe weather tore through the nation's 39th state.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1967665592955179443" src="https://x.com/NWSBismarck/status/1967665592955179443"></div>The National Weather Service offices in Bismarck and Grand Fork say North Dakota has broken the record for most tornadoes in a year, surpassing the previous total of 61 set in 1999.Severe storms swept through Central North Dakota on Sunday, and Bismarck confirmed 15 tornadoes from this outbreak.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1968057424612606356" src="https://x.com/NWSBismarck/status/1968057424612606356"></div><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/0915 ND Most Tornadoes on Record-1757978378157.png">North Dakota typically sees about 29 tornadoes each year, but before September 14th, the state had already seen 58 for 2025.<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/2dgiWTWdp-0" start="0"></iframe></div>Preliminary ratings from Sunday's event include an EF-1 just west of Mercer, ND, and EF-2 level damage in the Denhoff, ND area. Additional EF-2 damage was found approximately 13 miles west of Linton, ND. The office says more details will be released as the surveys are completed.Jeff Schild, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Bismarck said Sunday's event was a bit of an unusual set up, and resembled more of an event you would see in the southeastern U.S. instead of the plains. The high shear environment contributed to several tornadoes touching down, but also mentioned the lack of hail the storms produced.

North Dakota Breaks Yearly Tornado Record

Did you see them? Many might have had better things to do this weekend but if you were paying attention to Space Weather, you got a treat! NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center upped the expectation late last night, with some dazzling results.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1967422118729273403" src="https://x.com/NWSSWPC/status/1967422118729273403"></div>The problem for many in the plains was cloud-cover, with evening storms making it difficult to see the lights behind the lightning, but some were lucky to sneak between the clouds.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-15 092335-1757950156965.png">Granted, it might have been difficult to see with the naked eye. Many of the photos we've seen have mentioned a long exposure that was needed to see the fun. Either way, it's gorgeous if you can figure it out.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-15 092324-1757950271340.png">While it wasn't the most robust solar storm we've seen in the past 2 years, it was well worth it for some! Northern Lights Close Out the Weekend For Many

A strong upper-level trough along with monsoonal moisture advecting northward continues to hone in on Western Colorado, SE Utah, and New Mexico. Both a flood threat and isolated severe thunderstorms will be possible. There are risks for excessive rainfall and flooding over the next few days. The risks are very isolated in the threat of flooding, but it is still something to pay attention to.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/09-14 rsc wpcs-1757878358375.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The Storm Prediction Center has the risk for strong storms stretching from North Dakota to Texas, but here we will discuss the threat for the southern Plains and Texas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-14 133029-1757878277064.png">The latest model data suggest that the heaviest rain will be focused over parts of West Texas and the Central Plains as the disturbance keeps moving east. With upper-level support, some thunderstorms may become organized with a severe threat. Meaning the upper levels have more influence on the day-to-day weather. When we look at the upper atmosphere, an important shape forms: the Greek letter omega! Blocking Pattern Warms Up the Midsection

CALIFORNIA - Wildfires in the western U.S. continue to burn, impacting air quality across much of the country. The Garnet Fire, which began in the Sierra National Forest on August 24, 2025, has prompted a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/r05/sierra/alerts/garnet-fire-closure-order">partial forest closure </a>near the fire.According to the Fresno County Sheriff's Department, some evacuation orders are in effect in the area. The fire has now burned over 56,000+ acres and is approximately 15% contained as of Wednesday evening.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/web6-1757599366147.png"><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/2025-09-11 09-48-00-1757598502790.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>As of Thursday morning, the air quality is in the moderate range from the Garnet Fire. Smoke Creates Dangerously Hazardous Air Quality in California

From Delaware to Florida, coastal flood alerts have been issued along a large portion of the U.S. East Coast. These are issued for 1-2 feet of inundation, and several factors are at play. A strong high-pressure center over New England and a stationary boundary offshore the southeast coast are going to leave the east coast under persistent onshore winds that are pushing the ocean water onto the beaches.Additionally, beachgoers should exercise caution due to the high risk of rip currents. These strong, fast-moving currents can pull swimmers away from shore.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-10 192356-1757553892007.png">The last full moon, just earlier this week, enhanced high tides, being an additional factor to the widespread coastal alerts.

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

The southern plains has been hounded with storms over the last few days, with flooding being a major issue in central Kansas. Rainfall totals were 4"-10" on Monday into Tuesday. The threat of a few strong severe storms will continue into the overnight hours.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/hail rprpr-1757471419786.png">OVERNIGHT - The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight (level 2 out of 5) risk for severe storms overnight east of the Front Range and into the Plains. Damaging winds and large hail are the primary threats.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/VOVOVOV-1757470390211.png">Although storms will be isolated overnight, some will have the potential to be strong to severe. September marks the start of National Preparedness Month.In a new study done by Talker, 90% of Americans acknowledge they are at risk of a natural disaster, but only 46% of people said they were prepared for a disaster of any kind.The study goes on to conclude that younger generations (Gen Z, Millennials) are more prepared for a disaster than older generations. Despite being past the peak, there is still plenty of hurricane season left and all it takes is a single storm to make a drastic impact to your community. That's why the Red Cross is encouraging those in hurricane prone areas to make a disaster plan now, ahead of the storm, and start finding supplies you may need now to avoid the rush and long lines when a storm approaches.<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/K7sqHPreCwY" start="0"></iframe></div>"The best time to prepare for a disaster is well before it happens," said Mandy McMahon, a spokesperson for the National Red Cross. McMahon emphasized the importance of making plans for staying home and evacuating when it comes to tropical systems for both coastal communities, but also inland areas that typically see impacts from tropical systems."Food, water, and medicine are the most important items, but also think about how you'll charge your devices." McMahon added as she encourages those with medical conditions to remember how live saving medical devices may need to be charged or may need replacement batteries.McMahon also adds that you should be finding apps now that can help notify you of emergencies, but also of evacuation orders, places to find shelters, and other helpful resources during disasters. From Wilson's Warbler to Canadian Geese, millions of birds (we are excluding "Snowbirds" from this count) are kicking off their seasonal migration to warmer climates further south. To learn more about this tremendous trek, we spoke with ornithologist and aero-ecologist, Kyle Horton, Ph.D. from Purdue University.<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/altubffHZ-U" start="0"></iframe></div>"We're well into fall migration across most of North America right now, and night after night there's going to be hundreds of millions of birds flying. Across the season, we'll be looking at billions of birds making their southward journey to their non-breeding or wintering grounds," said Horton who helps runs the migratory bird forecasting website: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://birdcast.info/">https://birdcast.info/</a>.The team utilizes weather radars, the same that we use to detect thunderstorms to also track their feathery friends. That means sometimes radars are actually showing birds rather than actual showers. You'll sometimes hear meteorologist refer to this as "clutter" on the radar imagery."The rain we're accustomed to seeing on radar is really intense, it's quite dense and it shows up on a it shows up as a more stronger signal," Horton added. Precipitation typically shows up as reds and oranges on most radar scales, where birds return typically show up as blues and greens. Horton said you can look at the texture of the radar image to identify whether the radar is showing rain or animals like birds or insects. Storms typically have a more elongated shapes and are irregular. Birds return a smoother more consistent shape.Horton said typically birds try and time their travels with the arrival of frontal systems to make their journey a little easier.
