Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

A strong cold front will be dropping into the Rockies and Midwest this weekend, dropping temperatures considerably. Hurricane Erin is not expected to make direct landfall in the U.S., but dangerous conditions will still impact the eastern seaboard, including high surf and strong rip currents. Erin has already made its closest approach to North Carolina and now is headed to the north. Currently a Category 2 hurricane, Erin has maximum sustained winds of 105 mph and a central pressure of 945 mb. A Tropical Storm Warning is still ongoing for the Outer Banks of North Carolina to Atlantic City.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-21 043505-1755772565077.jpg">Storm surge will be one of the significant impacts from Erin, as the storm pushes large swells toward the coast. Storm surge and tropical storm conditions are expected to continue on the North Carolina Outer Banks until Thursday afternoon. The large waves may cause beach erosion, and some roads could become impassable. As, Erin makes it way to the north, Tropical storm conditions are also likely on Thursday along the southeastern coast of Virginia and beyond. Up to 4 feet of storm surge is possible along the Carolinas' coast, accompanied by waves reaching 15 to 25 feet.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-21 043550-1755772574061.jpg"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-21 043538-1755772601084.jpg">Multiple tropical alerts have been issued for the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Remember, from the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCPAT5+shtml/182044.shtml">National Hurricane Center</a>:<blockquote><ul><li>Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours.</li><li>Storm Surge Watch means there is a possibility of life-threatening inundation, from rising water moving inland from the coastline, in the indicated locations during the next 48 hours.</li><li>For a depiction of areas at risk, please see the National Weather Service Storm Surge Watch/Warning Graphic, available at <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://hurricanes.gov">hurricanes.gov</a>."</li></ul></blockquote><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ad6MxSe0890" start="0"></iframe></div>Erin is not expected to strengthen any further. The hurricane will be running into some unfavorable conditions like wind shear during the next day or so. The general directions takes it to the northeast moving around 40 mph.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-21 043522-1755772583299.jpg">While most of the heavy rainfall will be over the Atlantic, the National Hurricane Center is still forecasting that parts of North Carolina could gather up 1 to 2 inches of rain in outer rainbands from Erin into Thursday. Flooding is a possibility, especially when factoring in the storm surge at high tide.Venturing into the water as a beachgoer is extremely dangerous along the East Coast this week. Hurricane Erin Targets East Coast: Tropical Storm Alerts and Evacuations Underway

About two-thirds of all Atlantic hurricane activity typically occurs between August 20th and October 10th. We're heading through the heart of Atlantic hurricane season and we certainly have activity that indicates am uptick in energy. In addition to Erin, we're tracking three tropical waves in the Atlantic Basin.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/1-1755785506592.png">RELATED ARTICLE: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/an-area-to-monitor-in-the-atlantic">Latest on Hurricane Erin</a>The next tropical wave has a high chance to develop into a tropical depression or stronger over the weekend. The good news for the east coast is this storm's path will likely be east of Erin and it should be a smaller and weaker storm, meaning smaller waves and minimal additional erosion. People with interests in Bermuda should monitor this storm closely as it could make direct impacts. This will likely get the next Atlantic basin name, Fernand, pronounced FAIR-NAHN.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/1-1755785823896.png">Another tropical wave is trailing behind in the MDR (Main Development Region) of the Atlantic. This wave has developed good convection but still lacks an organized core (closed low). It has a short window to develop further through Friday before the introduction of additional dry air and wind shear, likely to tear this system apart over the weekend with minimal impacts to the Caribbean from remnant showers.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/1-1755785991181.png">Lastly, NHC is monitoring another low pressure system east of Bermuda! Conditions look very marginal for further development in the next few days as it moves further east near the Azores.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/1-1755786144778.png"><h2><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-21 051415-1755774872597.png">Next Few Weeks</h2>The tropics in the Atlantic have a chance to stay active through the first week of September. While a large scale Kelvin Wave isn't likely to spur activity like it has the last two weeks, additional tropical waves could develop in the Atlantic and the Gulf/Western Caribbean. Watching Three Tropical Waves Behind Erin in the Atlantic

High pressure continues to build out west, which will lead to dangerous heat and dry conditions. Widespread heat alerts are in place for much of the Southwest. This includes cities like Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Phoenix. In the Desert Southwest, temperatures will climb well into the triple digits. Further north, in California, Oregon, and Nevada, highs will climb into the 90s and 100s. The hot temperatures stick around throughout the weekend and into next week for some. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/tomer west highs 3 day-1755735026143.jpg">Remember, cities can feel significantly hotter due to the urban heat island effect. Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

Numerous wildfires continue to burn across the western United States, including three "Megafires," or fires burning over 100,000 acres: The Lee Wildfire, Dragon Bravo Wildfire, and Gifford Wildfire. In addition to the warm weather and dry fuels, fire spread could be accelerated in the next few days with more dry thunderstorms and gusty conditions.<h1>GIFFORD FIRE</h1>Burning as California's largest wildfire in 2025, the Gifford Fire has torched over 132k acres. The good news has been the containment numbers in recent days. This fire is likely soon to become Colorado's third-largest wildfire in state history, needing fewer than 2k additional acres to top the size of the Pine Gulch Fire, which burned during the historic 2020 season in the Centennial State.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-17 093907-1755445152104.png"><h1>DRAGON BRAVO FIRE</h1>One of the largest fires in Arizona history, the Dragon Bravo Fire, has continued to smolder along the northern rim of the Grand Canyon. It has burned more than 144k acres, making it the 7th largest in state history.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1953931727044223408" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1953931727044223408"></div><h1></h1><h1>FORECAST</h1>Dry and gusty conditions will still have the potential to lead to rapid rates of fire spread through Sunday. Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

A Colorado Low is working across the Plains bringing snow from Colorado to Michigan and even the Northeast. Snow will continue to move east overnight and winter alerts remain in place for additional snowfall through the overnight hours.
