This cabin on Spencer Glacier is buried up to the roofline, which is 9 feet tall. You can see a large pile of snow on top of the cabin too! Spencer Glacier is located roughly 60 miles South of Anchorage and during the summer is a place for hiking and camping, and snowmobiling in the winter months (which is how this remote cabin was reached).

The winter season in Anchorage, AK Alaska has been record-setting, with a current snow depth of 28" in the city. We understand this is Alaska. In the wintertime they get snow, but this year has been different: since June 1, 2023, Anchorage has seen 123.4" of snowfall, 165% more than typical season totals of roughly 75". The snowiest winter ever on record for Anchorage was in 2011-2012 with over 134" (10+ feet) for the season. This year is on track to be the fourth snowiest winter on record for the city.

There is still time for the seasonal snowfall number to climb as the snow season runs through the Spring. There may be an opportunity to clinch a few more inches of snow over the weekend.

Before the snow arrives, some melting will occur with a high likelihood of above-freezing temperatures through the overnight and daytime hours across south-central Alaska.

According to the climate books in Anchorage, the city hit the 100-inch mark (for seasonal snow) at its earliest date on record in late January. Regardless if Anchorage can score another 10" of snow before the season is done, the 2023-24 winter will be one to remember!
