From Delaware to Florida, coastal flood alerts have been issued along a large portion of the U.S. East Coast. These are issued for 1-2 feet of inundation, and several factors are at play. A strong high-pressure center over New England and a stationary boundary offshore the southeast coast are going to leave the east coast under persistent onshore winds that are pushing the ocean water onto the beaches.
Additionally, beachgoers should exercise caution due to the high risk of rip currents. These strong, fast-moving currents can pull swimmers away from shore.
The last full moon, just earlier this week, enhanced high tides, being an additional factor to the widespread coastal alerts.
