Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

<p><strong>UPPER MIDWEST -</strong> Through Monday, dangerous tornadoes were confirmed across the state of Wisconsin. The threat for severe storms will follow a frontal boundary across the Great Lakes and Midwest through tonight due to strong upper-level winds and a very moist and unstable low-level air mass moving through. The tornado out of Menasha, WI has been labeled as a preliminary EF-3 from the National Weather Service. Peak winds were estimated to be 140 mph.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="2081823772555001897" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/2081823772555001897"></div><h2>Tuesday Storms</h2><p>More storms are expected ahead of the front today. As the front slides east, so will the chances of severe weather. A <strong>SLIGHT </strong>(level 2 out of 5) risk for severe weather will be in place over the Mid-Atlantic and portions of the Northeast.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-28 082553-1785248758560.png"></p><p>Like Monday, damaging winds are expected to be the main threat we'll watch for on Tuesday. However, still can't rule out tornadoes. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-28 082543-1785248748830.png"></p><p>For Tuesday's storms, the same frontal boundary tracks east and will run into some Atlantic moisture to help build instability for severe weather chances. These storms will move over the Appalachians, Carolinas, and Mid-Atlantic as an upper level trough and cold front help support thunderstorm updrafts.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/2026-07-28 04-17-18-1785233855526.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Flooding Risk</h2><p>In addition to severe weather threats, the risk for flooding will increase as storms slow down and move over saturated soils. Our in-house show heavy regions fo rainfall that may exceed flash flooding guidance.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-28 041929-1785233986220.png"></p><p>Therefore, excessive rainfall outlooks have been issued out east for Tuesday and Wednesday as thunderstorms move through. Severe Storms Move From Midwest to Northeast

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

<p>An area of high pressure continues to bring the heat across the United States! There will be a little relief for some, but a lot of areas will remain hot! Multiple records were broken on Sunday, including Denver, CO. Denver hit 103°, beating out the old record of 100°. More records will be possible this afternoon.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/jalsss-1785117589227.png">There are over<strong> 100 million people </strong>under heat alerts, about a third of the U.S. population. Extreme heat warnings, extreme heat watches, and heat advisories are all in place across the country over the next few days. Find ways to stay cool!</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-28 044010-1785235221989.png"></p><h1>Southwest</h1><p><strong>Extreme Heat Warnings</strong> and<strong> Advisories</strong> have been issued for parts of the Desert Southwest into Monday. As we look ahead into Tuesday, temperatures are above average for cities like Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Phoenix, but near average for spots like San Diego and Bakersfield.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/tue - thu-1785175513631.png"></p><h1>Central U.S.</h1><p>As high pressure expands westward, the upper high also expands northward into the High Plains and Upper Midwest. <strong>Heat alerts</strong> have been issued for areas from the Northern Rockies out into the Great Lakes with some areas remaining in the alerts through Tuesday.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-28 044112-1785235284871.png"></p><p>Lastly, for the Southern Plains, the high heat sticks around for the weekend and most of this week because of high pressure. Over 100 Million Under Heat Alerts

<h1>Pacific</h1><p><strong>Tropical Storm Fausto </strong>continues to track west, along with Major Hurricane Genevieve that formed on Friday. Weakening to a tropical storm, Fausto is expected to track westward and begin to weaken to a tropical depression. Dry air and increasing shear mean the storm is expected to weaken some as it approaches the Hawaiian Islands. In the latest forecast cone from the National Hurricane Center, Fausto is expected to track further north, away from the Islands. However, coastal impacts are still expected. Large swells and strong currents will impact the islands next week, but wind and rain impacts from the system itself cannot be ruled out. We will continue to keep you updated!</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-27 173531-1785195397941.png">The main threat heading towards the Hawaiian Islands will be increased surf. For now, Fausto looks to stay more to the north, limiting tropical storm impacts to the islands.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/2026-07-28 04-25-52-1785234371306.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Genevieve</h1><p><strong>Genevieve</strong> formed on Friday south of Acapulco, Mexico. With plenty of warm waters ahead, Genevieve rapidly intensified into a <strong>Category 5</strong> hurricane; now the current status is a Category 4 hurricane. Luckily, the storm will stay away from land. However, choppy waters and rough surf can be expected if visiting any of the Mexican cities along the Pacific coast.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-28 042631-1785234406815.png"></p><p>This storm could bring some high surf conditions to Southern California beaches by Thursday and Friday. Another batch of storms will keep the flooding threat on the table as we move into this weekend. Make sure you have a plan of action if high water becomes an issue in your neighborhood.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-25 053112-1784979080498.jpg"></p><p>All the rain that has fallen in the last month will keep the flood risk ongoing for many spots in the Mid-Atlantic.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-25 052948-1784978995612.jpg"></p><h1>Timing</h1><p>Showers and storms will continue Saturday across the Southeast. Flash flooding and even a few isolated strong storms will be possible this weekend. As the front drops south, more concentrated storm chances will move into the Sunshine State. Southeast Flood Risk Lingers Near Stalled Front

<p>Tuesday brought severe weather again across parts of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region. Multiple tornadoes were spotted, including one in Summerville, PA. </p><p></p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="2078640402845114541" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/2078640402845114541?s=20"></div><h1>OVERNIGHT </h1><p>Into the overnight hours, the Storm Prediction Center has issued a marginal risk for severe storms, including the cities of Charlotte, Raleigh, and Richmond. Any area highlighted in dark green will have the potentail for strong to severe storms overnight. Damaging winds will be the primary concern, but a brief tornado can't be ruled out. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/overnigsss-1784768974407.png"></p><p>Storms will continue along the frontal boundary overnight. Another concern with these storms is the heavy rain that has developed and will continue to develop as this system lingers.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/kkdss-1784769199524.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Along the stalled boundary, heavy rainfall will be possible with the training showers and thunderstorms, and flooding could occur. Another Round of Storms Targets the Northeast

<p>The upper-level low train continues to keep the weather pattern active for the Midwest. As this system moved through today, strong storms developed, bringing damaging winds, large hail, and tornado warnings.</p><h1>Severe Outlook</h1><p>Overnight, we have a slight risk for strong storms from the Midwest to the Great Lakes. The biggest concern will be damaging winds, but large hail and a few tornadoes are also possible.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/enhannfff-1784599474298.png">Some storms could be packing a significant punch. Hen-egg sized hail and hurricane-force wind gusts will be possible with the strongest storms. Some storms will have a chance to see large tracking tornadoes.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/fjfjfjfjfsss-1784599821708.png"></p><h1>Forecast Timing</h1><p>Overnight, as the frontal boundary moves to the south/east, storms will continue to ride along it. Another Round of Severe Weather for the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes

<p>Wildfires burning in Northwestern Ontario, Canada, and northern Minnesota have been producing smoke, and upper-level winds in the atmosphere have been carrying that smoke into the Great Lakes, Midwest, and Northeast. Air quality has improved, but another mild push of smoke is moving through the region today ahead of another front. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-19 064723-1784458061933.png">Air quality is still poor enough to lead to air quality alerts today, but there is some hope on the horizon. Another front is dropping through, which should bring some rain, but most importantly, this rain could clear out some of the wildfire smoke. However, there is also the risk that is draws in more wildfire smoke. Our models have the outcome of conditions clearing.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/smoke and cat precip-1784576988880.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Alerts remain in place across the Great Lakes region and Midwest.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-20 134842-1784576951816.png"></p><h1><strong><span style="color: black">How Smoke from Wildfires Can Impact Breathing</span></strong></h1><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/GIU_Kz5gPzI" start="0"></iframe></div><p>“We know that air pollution in general can really trigger a number of health issues, including simple things that we think about like asthma or COPD, but they can actually also trigger cardiovascular events. And smoke from wildfires is no exception,” said Samuel Gurevich, MD, pulmonologist at Cleveland Clinic. “They actually put into the air a lot of what we call particulate matter, which are these very, very fine particles of dust and other organic matter that then can easily be breathed in and can irritate the airways or even be absorbed into the bloodstream.”</p><p>Dr. Gurevich said other groups that could be affected by the wildfire smoke include children with hard to control asthma, women who are pregnant, and people with pre-existing heart conditions.</p><p>So, what can they do to help stay safe? He recommends checking the air quality for your city before going out for the day. That information can be found online or within many weather apps. If the air quality is bad, it’s best to stay inside.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/42cqyxmedcE" start="0"></iframe></div><p>“Make sure your windows are closed and your air conditioning is on. HEPA filters do a reasonably good job, as well, if you have access to that. Those are all those things you should be prepared with. And if you do already have a diagnosis of a respiratory illness like asthma, COPD, or emphysema, have a rescue plan in place,” he said.</p><p>Dr. Gurevich said if you do have to go outside, try to make it as quick as possible. You could also wear an N95 mask. Anyone experiencing shortness of breath or worsening symptoms should seek medical attention right away.&nbsp;</p><p></p>

Air Quality Improvements in the Forecast

Just a couple hundred miles to the southwest of Los Cabos, Mexico sits Tropical Storm Henriette.

Henriette formed Monday morning. Winds hold steady around 40 mph and is moving WNW at 13 mph.
