PLAINS - Wildfire danger remains critical as we head into the work week across the Plains. The SPC has issued a CRITICAL (level 2 out of 3) risk for fire weather conditions on Monday. Red flag warnings and fire weather watches are widespread across the central Plains from South Dakota to Texas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-16 210949-1742181102121.png">Tuesday, winds may whip up to 30+ mph, which will elevate the wildfire danger, especially into Texas and New Mexico. That will lead to the extreme risk of wildfires, where any grass fire started could exhibit erratic behavior. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-17 053228-1742211157806.jpg">As with any day, be vigilant not to do anything that could cause a spark or a flame. If an evacuation order is issued for your area, heed it. Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

Thunderstorms Tuesday, heavy snow Wednesday. Isn't spring lovely? The Midwest will be experiencing the highs and lows of spring this week as another storm system moves from the Rockies to the Great Lakes around the middle of the week. The Storm Prediction Center is highlighting the risk for severe storms in Nebraska and Iowa on Tuesday, while the WPC is highlighting the risk for heavy snow Wednesday-Thursday for some of the same areas (top of page)!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-16 101525-1742141738773.png">Energy looks limited, but by late Tuesday night there could be strong enough updrafts for severe thunderstorms. Behind this, strong enough northerly winds to turn temperatures sub-freezing will help to bring in snowfall.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/03-16 rnc bams15k gfs-1742180612067.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Snow will exit the Rockies late Monday into Tuesday, tracking east into the Midwest with thunderstorms along the warm front, and snow along the cold front. The rain and snow will move east into the Great Lakes Wednesday into Thursday. Winter weather alerts have been issued for cities like Omaha, after spending the day under a marginal risk.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-16 210250-1742180951259.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-16 101642-1742141820357.png">Temperatures will climb quickly to start the week, followed by a sharp cooldown behind the front. Low temperatures will drop from nearly 60 to the low 30s in Kansas City, for example.

Midweek Low Brings Storms & Snow to the Midwest

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. WESTERN U.S. - Another cold front is moving onshore the coast of northern California, Oregon and inland. This system is expected to bring high winds, heavy rain, and heavy snow for the mountains. Winter weather alerts have been issued through Monday, for up to 2 feet of snowfall.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-17 055902-1742212755591.jpg">By Monday morning, a reinforcing system will help to bring additional moisture to the west Coast, but the heaviest of the rain and snow will follow the front inland to the Four Corners. Snow levels remain fairly high with this system, but many mountain passes will be difficult through Monday night and Tuesday morning.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/03-16 west through tue-1742177671504.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Precipitation Forecast</h2>Despite recent storms, California's snowpack remains slightly below average (about 89% of normal), with the Northern Sierra seeing the most moisture at 102%. 95%. The Central and Southern Sierra could benefit from the snowfall coming on Friday, with Central Sierra at 84%, and the Southern Sierra at 84%.The Cascades will still pick up a decent amount of snow, but moving forward this moisture pushes into the Rocky Mountains. A tornado watch is set through 1 AM in these areas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-16 190821-1742173751390.png">A cold front will continue to usher storms east through Monday morning. The northeastern U.S. storms will last a little longer than the southeastern U.S. as the surface low continues to push through. Severe Threat Moves East into Atlantic

An intense low pressure system has been moving through the Midwest with widespread wind gusts over 40-50 mph. As these storng winds combine with snow, low visibility and blizzard conditions have developed in western Minnesota.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/blizzzzy-1742002537075.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video> Is this going to be a snowstorm that breaks the bank? No. This will be more about the winds than anything. Snowfall amounts might be lucky to get to 6" by the time this system moves east.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/1-1741977874511.png">Winter alerts are now in place including Blizzard Warnings for portions of the Interstate 29 corridor. Snow will gradually end from west to east Saturday evening, though winds could keep blowing snow around for several hours after it stops falling.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/1-1741994639675.png">Regardless of whether or not this makes it to the blizzard warning criteria, blowing snow WILL be a problem on Saturday - make travel plans accordingly.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-14 105406-1741971751413.jpg">The other complicating factor is how much of a wintry mix will be part of the equation. Some models have a harder time changing the rain over to snow completely, leaving a mix of freezing rain and sleet to fall for a longer period of time. That too could have an impact on the roads throughout the day.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-14 110218-1741971746674.jpg">If this system stays too warm, that wouldn't be the first time the Upper Midwest has been left high and dry this winter. Hopefully you could sneak outside in the wee hours of Friday morning to catch a glimpse of the Lunar Eclipse! It was the last one for North America until 2029. Fear not, we've got you covered. It will be the last for North America until 2029!<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/VON_031325_RSE_BOCA RATON,FL_BLOOD MOON VIEWED FROM FLORIDA LATE THURSDAY NIGHT_STORYFUL_DO_E031425-1741948020145.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1> WHAT HAPPENED</h1> The eclipse happened very late Thursday night - technically Friday morning since totality started after midnight on the East Coast. As the moon moved into the umbra or the darkest shadow cast by the earth, it turned a deep red hue. Starting around 1 AM ET the red color became much more noticeable around 2 am, with totality or the complete blood moon look, happening between 2:26 am and 3:31 am ET.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/2025-03-08 08-28-36-1741448546607.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Here's a look at how the moon changed from its classic white to dark red as it moved across Earth's shadow. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-08 084030-1741448509493.png">The eclipse was a "total" lunar eclipse because it passed through the darkest portion of Earth's shadow, known as the umbra. While this earth's shadow is always present, it isn't too often that the moon moves directly through the darkest part.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-08 085447-1741449297753.png">During a partial lunar eclipse, the "umbra", or earth's hard shadow, doesn't fully cover the moon, only a portion. During a penumbral lunar eclipse, the Earth only passes through the "soft" shadow of the moon, with the umbra completely missing the lunar surface.

FOUR CORNERS - The same system that has been bringing rain and heavy snow in California, Oregon, and Nevada is now moving through the Four Corners to bring snow to ski country. Rain and snow have worked into Utah earlier Thursday morning, and snow is expected to fill in across the Rockies of Colorado through Friday morning. It is not until later Friday morning that the snow could move to the lower elevations. Forecast models are still keeping most of the snow to the higher elevations at this time.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/cornerssnow-1741922547478.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Snowfall totals through the end of Saturday do not look to be overly impressive for our lower-elevation locations, but the mountains, especially the San Juans and through the Mogollon Rim, will get a decent enough amount for skiers and snowboarders to be happy.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-13 212321-1741922619892.png">Winter alerts are filling in across the Four Corners, but according to the Winter Storm Severity Index (WSSI), northern Arizona will be one of the locations that reach the "major" impact level on a scale of limited, minor, moderate, major, and extreme. This includes Flagstaff through Whiteriver along the Mogollon Rim.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-13 212356-1741922641639.png">Windy conditions will be a problem over the next several days with gusts exceeding 50 mph at times!<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/wind-1741922707554.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Be sure to catch more at :50 past the hour for your western regional forecast.

The drought is still very persistent across much of the western and southern parts of the Nation.

The worst drought conditions are in place across the four corners region, impacting the states of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. Parts of these states are dealing with "Exceptional" drought" based on the drought monitor categories.

There is also "Exceptional" drought in place across parts of Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma.

The next United States Drought Monitor will be issued on Thursday, June 14th, 2018.
