Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

Snow blew through much of the Northeastern United States on Friday, dropping between 1-6 inches from Indiana to Virginia. As the low pressure system slowly exits New England on Saturday, additional snow is expected to pile up. A sharp surge of Arctic air is set to spill into the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic this weekend, bringing a significant drop in temperatures and some of the coldest conditions the region has felt this winter. This blast of cold will arrive behind a fast-moving system late Friday, ushering in gusty winds and a brief chance for light snow before the true chill settles in.&nbsp;Extreme Cold Warnings are in effect for Northeast through the weekend. Wind chill values are expected to be 20 to 35 degrees below zero.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/2026-02-07 04-16-03-1770463084098.mkv" controls="true" width="100%"></video>By Saturday, much colder air will move down from Canada, dropping temperatures well below seasonal averages. Afternoon highs will struggle to climb out of the 20s in many areas, while overnight lows dip into the single digits and teens. However, temperatures will still stay a good ten to twenty degrees above average by early next week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1770433681259.png"><h1>Record Warmth Shifts East</h1>As troughing sets in across the Pacific, high pressure will shift farther east into the Plains and Midwest through the weekend into next week. Record Heat Moves from West to Midwest

Following a surge of wet storm systems in December and early January, snowpack in the Sierra Nevada mountains has shrunk considerably. The Department of Water Resources (DWR) conducted a snow survey on Friday, January 30th, to assess current conditions and discuss impacts. Snowpack was determined to be 55 percent of normal, down from 89 percent in early January, which has since dropped further. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.youtube.com/live/5cyXPAy4Cac">Click here</a> to watch the survey report.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-04 113103-1770236816380.png">California and much of the West have been under the influence of a massive blocking ridge of high pressure. This has kept storms charging to the north into Canada before descending across the Midwest and Eastern United States, which has been under siege from cold and snowy systems.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-05 154857-1770331744830.png"> The lack of January storms has left an abysmal snowpack across the Western United States, with record low numbers at many of the monitoring stations in the mountains. It hasn't just been a lack of storms, but also warm weather, which has led to high elevation snow and low elevation rain or melting.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-04 171742-1770250669542.png">The good news is that California has had three wet winter seasons preceding this year, which have left reservoirs with plenty of water. About 30 percent of the state's drinking water comes from the snowpack.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-05 154642-1770331615239.png"> While the short-term looks mostly dry for the west, above-average precipitation is favored in the medium-range forecast as the jet stream pattern could flip around the middle of the month. While full recovery of the snowpack across the entire west is unlikely, several moisture-packed storm systems could greatly benefit the region.

Forecasts point to a mild and comfortable setup, with temperatures expected to settle into the upper 50s to near 60 degrees around kickoff. While it may cool slightly as the evening goes on, conditions should remain pleasant enough for fans in the stands with a light jacket.&nbsp;<h3>PATTERN BREAKING DOWN</h3><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-07 063333-1770471273208.jpg">Skies are expected to feature a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day, with cloud cover increasing later in the afternoon and evening. Any moisture in the area appears limited, keeping the chance for rain low during game time.&nbsp;If you plan on attending any of the pregame festivities this week before the game kicks off, no issues at all either.Winds are also forecast to stay relatively light, which is good news for both players and spectators. Following a historic winter storm last weekend, another round of wintry weather moved across the Carolinas earlier on Thursday morning. Perhaps the biggest impact from the front will be another round of cold temperatures, which will further delay snowmelt across the region and continue to impact people in Mississippi, who have been without power for nearly two weeks following an ice storm.<h1>Carolina Snow and Ice:</h1>Although the snow and ice threat diminished earlier this evening, isolated slick spots will still be around through the morning on Friday. Here is a look at some of the snowfall that took place this morning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/PIC 2-1770309464464.jpg"><h1>South Cold</h1>Another round of frigid temperatures will follow the front. Another Cold Night for Residents of the Southeast

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

While it has now been about a week since a major ice storm swept across the southern tier of the country, over a hundred thousand customers remain without power, the majority across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. While temperatures warmed some, it's been a cold week for people to be without power, creating dangerous conditions for those without heat.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-03 115640-1770145007230.png">Customers without power are beginning to improve as temperatures climb.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-03 115635-1770145012216.png">Low temperatures will begin to rebound, more noticeably, by midweek. It is called a horseshoe cloud... Because, well, it's shaped like a horseshoe.

Christy Grimes caught a glimpse of what the National Weather Service calls "one of the rarest clouds ever."

Grimes shot the photos near Battle Mountain Thursday and sent them to the National Weather Service office in Elko, Nevada.

So, with it being one of the rarest clouds, everyone is stuck wondering how the clouds form.

The Elko National Weather Service office gave this great explanation:
<blockquote>"An updraft pushes flattish cumulus clouds up and a horizontal vortex develops from differential updraft speeds.

As the vortex climbs, it gets caught in the faster horizontal winds aloft, and the middle part of the vortex catches the faster speeds with the ends being slower.

The result is that the center of the vortex pulls out ahead. Various time lapses can be found online."</blockquote>
So, if you ever see a horseshoe cloud, make sure to snap a photo, because you're one of the lucky ones.
