OREGON - Oregon's Coastal Management Program needs your help in researching King Tides and how they shape the state's coastlines. We spoke with them in November to learn more about their project and how residents can help them better understand what's happening across the state's coastlines.
Learn more on what King Tides are.
To learn more about their mission you can visit their website and learn more about how you can submit to their photo contest. It's important to remember to always stay safe when around King Tides, and to never turn your back to the ocean as sneaker waves can drag people out to sea.
There are two more rounds of King Tides expected through the winter of 2025/26:
December 4th - 6th, 2025
January 1st - 4th 2026

King tides are most pronounced when the moon is at its closest point to the Earth in its orbit, which is known as perigee. This is happening at the same time as the full moon for both November and December, creating what's known as a supermoon. During these supermoon events, the moon will be about 14,000 miles closer to the Earth than normal!
