Thanks to the hard work of first responders, the South Fire has officially been 100% contained. It remains at 2,715 acres in size.
Over the weekend, air crews are on the scene to assist with mapping and water drops over the fire, which started during a Santa Ana wind setup. Fire alerts were in effect along with wind alerts for the high fire danger concerns. Some of the wind reports for the higher mountains were tropical storm force - widespread in the 60s and 70s for So-Cal!
A Santa Ana wind setup was responsible strong winds and high fire danger in southern California. A ridge of high pressure sitting over the Great Basin is pushing air from northeast to southwest, rushing down the spine of the Santa Ana mountains and into the valleys. This is a form of downsloping winds, and tends to lead to air racing down the slopes, drying out and warming up as it does so.
