A couple of waves of energy are sliding across the U.S., bringing severe weather, heavy rain, and snow to the High Plains and northern Rockies. It is not unheard of to have snow in April, and Plains states typically see their last snow of the season in April. Daytime hours will likely produce rain outside high elevations or in areas farther west where the cold has settled in.
The heaviest snowfall will be in Colorado this morning before energy shifts south into Arizona and New Mexico through the rest of the day. Snow will gradually taper off as the moisture moves out of the region on Tuesday morning and as temperatures warm.
Winter weather alerts are ongoing for the Sangre de Cristo mountains of southern Colorado, Arizona's mountains and higher elevations in New Mexico. Expect the wind to make travel even more difficult as it's expected to blow snow around and reduce visibility.
