<p style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt; color: #454545;">Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

<p>Atlantic hurricane season is just around the corner, so the question is, when and where we will see the first system of the season?</p><p>Signs are pointing to areas around Central America during the 2nd or 3rd week of June, as increasing lift moves into the region along with westerly winds. <br><br>The Climate Prediction Center is highlighting this region (top of page) with low confidence of a tropical system forming in the western Caribbean or southwestern Gulf, also known as the Bay of Campeche. This doesn't indicate a system is expected, so be sure to stay up to date with the 7-Day forecast from the National Hurricane Center.<br><br>Better chances for formation around Mid-June are expected in the Eastern Pacific, which <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/an-area-to-watch-in-the-pacific-already"><u>already has one name crossed off the list</u></a>.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-29 104826-1748537463299.png">A system in the Gulf or western Atlantic is not unusual in the month of June, which typically has warmer water early in the season compared to the MDR in the Atlantic (between the Caribbean and west Africa).</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-29 104849-1748537876634.png"></p><p>The early season will more often see more tropical storms than hurricanes, but hurricanes can form and impact the United States, so it's <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/hurricane-prep-week-2025"><u>always best to be prepared</u></a>. Andrea is the first name on the list in the Atlantic in 2025.</p><h2><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-29 104834-1748537884478.png">Eastern Pacific Ocean</h2><p>We are monitoring a medium chance for tropical development in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Conditions look favorable for a slow development by late this week. First Tropical System in the Atlantic Could Form Mid-June, Watching E. Pacific

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

<p>After temperature extremes and a very active month of May, the active severe weather pattern lingers for Texas into June. An afternoon round of storms is expected to develop between Dallas and Houston. Isolated Severe Storms for TX Today

<p>The Southern United States has certainly been active over the past week, with multiple rounds of strong storms and heavy rain. This threat continues across the Sunshine State through Tuesday. A stalled frontal boundary remains in place, fueling daily rounds of rainfall and thunder that could disrupt outdoor activities, travel, and popular tourist destinations.<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">&nbsp;</span></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-31 060218-1748692959487.jpg"></p><h1>Severe Outlook</h1><p>With favorable atmospheric conditions, including sufficient deep-layer shear, there is a chance for storms to organize, producing gusty to damaging winds and possibly small to near-severe hail. While the severe threat remains isolated today, those headed outdoors should remain alert to fast-developing weather for the remainder of the weekend.</p><p>These areas have had heavy rain over the last several weeks and that means flooding will also be a concern.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-01 075458-1748786103719.png"></p><h1>Forecast Timing</h1><p>Strong storms will remain possible through this afternoon, but you'll notice storms will continue through the beginning of the work week. If thunder is heard, it means lightning is close enough to strike, visitors should immediately seek shelter in a sturdy building or enclosed vehicle. At beaches, never remain in the water during a storm, as lightning can strike well beyond where rain is falling. Lifeguards may post warnings or clear the beach if storms approach, heed all instructions promptly. <p>Smoky skies will continue to cover portions of the Central and Eastern United States this weekend, as massive fires in Canada continue to spread. An upper-level trough in the Northeast and Great Lakes is guiding the smoke from north to south, which will eventually bring the smoke as far south as the Gulf Coast.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/web 8-1748774540363.png"></p><h1>Smoke Overhead</h1><p>The forecast below shows where smoke will be visible overhead and doesn't necessarily indicate where air quality will be impacted. Minnesota is expecting more widespread impacts on the Air Quality front. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an Air Quality Alert for fine particles pollution. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to reach the Orange or Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/2025-06-01 06-48-32-1748774938443.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p></p><p>Air quality alerts have been issued in the Upper-Midwest, with additional alerts probable into early next week as thick smoke lingers in the region.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Web 10 -1748774825547.png"></p><p>Air quality on Saturday was impacted in the Upper-Midwest and the Ohio Valley. Wildfire Smoke Spreads South Across the U.S.

<p>Even through summer is approaching, the northern lights may still dazzle millions Sunday night into Monday morning. A powerful solar flare erupted from sun late Friday night, with an Earth directed coronal mass ejection (CME) expected to arrive sometime Sunday. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/ezgif-51637e8d7b470f-1748712327325.gif"></p><p>Astronomers are in a wait and see mode for how strong the CME may be, but many are hopeful it will be strong enough to bring aurora borealis down to the mid-latitudes, including a large portion of the north United States late Sunday into Monday. The Space Weather Prediction Center is expected G3 conditions, with the potential for G4 conditions by the 2nd, or early Monday morning. Their latest forecast shows the potential to view the aurora down to I-80 in Iowa and Nebraska.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-31 112223-1748712236698.png"></p><p>G4 conditions would mean aurora viewing would be possible even farther south, especially for long exposure photography. It is worth noting the timing and strength of a CME is difficult to forecast, but satellites away from the Earth will be able to confirm if and when a CME impact is expected with about 30 minutes of lead time for earthlings. This means if you plan to try to view the aurora, stay up to date with the Space Weather Prediction Center's latest conditions.</p><h2>Cloud Forecast</h2><p>Even if the aurora may be visible overhead, it doesn't mean clouds won't run your fun. For the northern and mid-latitudes, there will be some cloud cover over the northern Rockies, Great Lakes, and northern New England.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/2025-05-31 11-22-33-1748712624382.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>

Aurora Borealis Could Reach the Mid-Latitudes Sunday Night

<p><strong>Hurricane Season has begun in the Eastern Pacific basin! </strong>The season officially kicked off on May 15. Almost two weeks after the start of the season, tropical depression One-E formed and was quickly upgraded to Tropical Storm Alvin.</p><h1>Alvin</h1><p>TD-1E strengthened to Tropical Storm Alvin on Thursday, but quickly reached its peak intensity Thursday evening before it started to weaken on Friday. The storm is expected to weaken to a remnant low as it nears Cabo San Lucas Saturday, but will still pack scattered heavy showers.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-31 053724-1748691617272.png">Moisture from this system is expected to move into portions of the Southwest this weekend, increasing chances for thunderstorms and flooding.</p><h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-30 053532-1748604940060.png">Next System</h1><p>The next system in the Eastern Pacific basin may not be far behind Alvin. An area of low pressure could form west of Guatemala next week. With conditions favorable for development, Barbara may not be far behind Alvin. <p>Here we go again! The West Coast is going to heat up in a serious way over the upcoming weekend. Triple-digit heat is likely.</p><h1>CAUSE</h1><p>A one-two punch of high-pressure centers will help the west get toasty. The second of which will be stronger, setting the stage for potentially record heat.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Web 1-1748425733737.png"></p><h1>HOW HOT WILL IT GET</h1><p>Several records in California fell on Friday and more are likely to fall on Saturday across the Southwest.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/1png-1748661478433.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-28 190352-1748481074398.png"></p><p>We're getting in the habit of practicing heat safety and looking before we lock the cars. Heat is always the most dangerous aspect of weather, killing more people every year than any aspect of severe weather.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/1-1748661586538.png"></p><p></p><p>This heat will reach up into the Northern Rockies as well. Record High temperatures will be expected Saturday and Sunday across Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.
