<h3>Melissa made landfall on Tuesday, October 28th, around 1:00 PM ET near New Hope, Jamaica, as a Category 5 hurricane, the 3rd strongest Hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Basin, with a central pressure dropping to 892 mb. Maximum sustained winds are estimated at 185 mph.</h3><h3>Hurricane Melissa made its second landfall in eastern Cuba early Wednesday near the city of Chivirico as a Category 3 storm. It is at category one in strength now. Damaging winds, flooding rains, and dangerous storm surge will continue through the Bahamas through tonight.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-29 150404-1761771905025.png">Melissa continues to pick up speed, but is still expected to cause catastrophic and life-threatening rainfall and mudslides. T<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCPAT3+shtml/281753.shtml?">he latest from NHC forecasts</a> 5-10" of rainfall in the Southeast Bahamas, 1-3" in the Turks and Caicos, an additional 2-4" in Jamaica, and 4-6" in Hispaniola.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-29 122329-1761762220842.png">Hurricane Melissa is expected to move through the Bahamas as a CAT one. The tightly wound inner structure of Melissa has been broken apart by the terrain of Jamaica and Cuba. This means it will be geographically larger, with its Tropical Storm force winds over a larger area. It will continue northeast with a faster forward speed towards Bermuda as a trough in the southeast U.S. picks it up. Catastrophic Melissa Makes Landfall in Jamaica, Cuba

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. Monday in Texas brought us record-breaking heat, and Tuesday, more records could fall. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/web1-1761745423728.png">Wind alerts have been issued through tonight across the central U.S. Gusts up to 50 mph.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-29 150045-1761771671013.png">Here's a look at some of the forecasted wind gusts across the Plains and into the Gulf Coast.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-29 150130-1761771695271.png">With strong winds, ongoing drought, and low relative humidity, there is critical fire danger across south Texas. There is also a red flag warning for these regions too. Strong Winds, Temperature Changes, and Severe Storms

An upper-level low has been traveling across the country, bringing rainy, windy, and cooler weather to many. Through tonight and into Thursday, this rain will work through the Midwest, Ohio Valley, Middle Atlantic, and into the Northeast. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/10-29_rne low-1761771333232.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The Storm Prediction Center has even issued severe weather outlooks for today and tomorrow. They're both MARGINAL (level 1 out of 5) risks, but they both have a low-end tornado potential thanks to the triple point moving through. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-29 145309-1761771276758.png">The timing of these storms will continue to follow the low. Through tonight, more of the Mid-South and Ohio Valley gets rain, versus through tomorrow, more of the Middle Atlantic and Northeast get rain. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/10-29_rne bams3k-1761771413541.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The Weather Prediction Center has issued excessive rainfall outlooks for today and tomorrow. For portions of the Ohio River Valley, the excessive rainfall outlook is at a level one, MARGINAL, risk for flash flooding as the low moves through. On Thursday, areas such as New York City will be included in the excessive rainfall outlook. Rain Headed for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast

LOS ANGELES - On Tuesday, temperatures in LA rose to record territory with a temperature of 97 degrees, which beats out the old record for October 28th of 94 in 1931. What's causing this heat? The Santa Ana winds have returned. In addition to LA, Oxnard, and Idyllwild also broke record highs on Tuesday afternoon.<h2><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-28 201221-1761703950133.png">Santa Ana Winds</h2>Whenever we have high-pressure systems out in the West Coast, the possibility of a Santa Ana wind setup becomes likely. The NWS in Los Angeles warns critical fire danger is likely on Wednesday because of low humidity, gusty winds, and high heat.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1983224741319065651" src="https://x.com/NWSLosAngeles/status/1983224741319065651"></div><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/2025-10-28 04-47-51-1761648488737.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video> During this phenomenon, winds head westward due to the high pressure's clockwise motion. These winds will pass over the dry, desert region of the southwest and head west through the mountain passages in Southern California. During their descent, the air compresses, causing their temperatures to rise.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/2025-10-28 04-53-29-1761648822406.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web1-1761648886403.png">These winds are expected to bring well above-average temperatures for Southern California. In some spots, we can expect temperatures that are close to 15 degrees above average. This puts several cities in the high 80s in late October!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/web2-1761745222117.png">As a result, the National Weather Service has issued multiple heat advisories and red flag warnings across LA county and the surrounding areas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-29 150955-1761772240038.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-29 150948-1761772249796.png">This heat will also come with the potential to break some additional records. Santa Ana Setup Bringing the Heat into Southern California

WEST - A series of atmospheric rivers has been responsible for wet, windy, and snowy weather in the northwestern U.S. The nest round of rain and snow looks to take shape later this week as our next river pushes in. The good news is that impacts will not be as widespread, and will mostly be localized to the Pacific Northwest, Olympics in particular.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-29 151600-1761772615848.png">Snowfall and rainfall totals will not be as heavy as they were this past weekend and into the early work week, but some areas should look for impacts as you head out on the roads.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-29 151554-1761772623631.png">Here's the "atmospheric river" we are referring to. Slow-moving train thunderstorms produced extreme rainfall across portions of Central Florida on Sunday, triggering a flash-flood emergency in Lake County. The area recorded nearly 18" of rain in under 5 hours.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-27 155504-1761602110229.png"><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/2025-10-27 09-47-59-1761573805964.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>A few other spots along Florida's east coast experienced the heavy downpours, even breaking daily records.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web 2-1761573435765.png">A stalled-out front was the culprit of the training showers. I will never forget the time it snowed in southwest Missouri on Halloween. Going from house to house for as long as we could stand it before piling back in the car because we were so cold. It doesn't snow that early in Springfield, or any other part of the country for that matter this early into Fall. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-27 111421-1761585271271.png">So let's see if Mother Nature is feeling in the mood to traumatize more youth this upcoming weekend. <h1>TROUBLE SPOTS</h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-27 111540-1761585429674.png">"Trouble" means a lot of different things for people on Halloween. Trouble, to us, is going to mean rain. Not much worse than spending all of that time and energy into a costume just to get rained on. While you might see some rain icons in the forecast in the northeast, there's a strong possibility we kick the rain out by the afternoon/evening, when it matters. We're more concerned with the Northwest like Seattle, where the rain might be both consistent and heavy at times. Coldest spot might be in the Upper Midwest, but any lingering cloud cover should help keep temps from freezing<h1>PICK OF THE NATION</h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-27 111630-1761585733352.png">When. Do we ever. See 3 straight days of a rain-free forecast in SOUTH FLORIDA?? We have to go with Miami for that reason. But if you came up short in this madeup competition, take some solace that most everybody is looking good to go this far in advance, which is a great sign.

FORECAST: Halloween Night Shaping Up Okay For Many

After recent warmth across the Great Lakes last weekend and early this week, ice coverage across the Great Lakes has decreased.

As of January 12th, the total ice coverage on the Great Lakes is 17.1%, down from 29.52% on January 7th.
