Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. MID-ATLANTIC - A slow-moving upper-level low will continue to move north into the Carolinas and Middle Atlantic Tuesday and Wednesday. Rainfall rates may reach upwards of 1-2" per hour.Flood Alerts have been issued across North Carolina and through Virginia on Tuesday, issued by the National Weather Service. Flooding caused by excessive rainfall will continue with rainfall totals between 2-4" with locally higher amounts.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-13 073335-1747143223421.png">Excessive Rainfall Outlooks are at a level 2 out of 4 on Tuesday, issued by the Weather Prediction Center.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-13 073414-1747143261240.png"> A few severe thunderstorms will be possible both Tuesday and Wednesday, capable of damaging winds and some large hail. Here we go. Whoever was wanting it to be Summer already got their wish down on the Southern Plains. Texas is heating up in a serious way as a strong ridge noses into the picture. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-13 073721-1747143680611.png">That ridge means that most active weather will get shunted north of the area. With little to no meaningful airmass to adjust the thermometer, it will start climbing. Places like Austin, TX may not dip below the century mark before Sunday!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-13 073752-1747143669342.png">Don't like it to be this hot this early? I might have some bad news for you...long range forecasters like keeping this sort of pattern around for the middle and end of May. Does this mean it's going to stay this hot? Not necessarily - these temperatures outlooks are more confidence-based on below or above average. Not to what degree. You have to remind yourself how early it is in the season for it. Your body is not adjusted to it coming out of Winter. We've been stuck in a pretty stagnant pattern recently. With a few cut-off lows and strong ridges of high pressure, the day-to-day pattern has struggled to change much. The trough in the Pacific Northwest will try to change that later this week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-13 072101-1747142473789.png">This trough will spark storms on the High Plains Wednesday before closing in on the Middle Mississippi River Valley late this week.<h1>OVERVIEW</h1>As this trough swings in, it will run into VERY warm temperatures. By Wednesday and Thursday, highs across the High Plains will get back to the 80's and 90's. The warm and humid air will more than likely help power strong to severe storms later this week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-11 103741-1746981482962.png">While a few ingredients look to come together sometime around Thursday, a lot can still change between now and then. The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted areas around the Chicagoland later this week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-12 063317-1747053207873.jpg">As details become a little clearer throughout the week, things like timing and storm mode will become a little clearer too.<h1>WEDNESDAY</h1>As our cold front swings in, strong storms will be possible during the day. Areas from North Dakota to Nebraska will have to watch out for damaging winds, large hail, and a few tornadoes. However, we expect the tornado window to be fairly narrow in the afternoon.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-13 070945-1747141797320.png"><h1>THURSDAY</h1>This is where things get interesting. The amount of unstable air makes ANY forecaster nervous to say this: the cap looks like it should win vs the worst of the worst environments. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-13 070147-1747141345956.png">What does that mean?IF storms were to fire in southern Illinois, southern Indiana, or western Kentucky, they could become violent. Where we expect storms to develop is where the Storm Prediction Center has issued a SLIGHT risk for severe storms on Thursday:<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-13 070204-1747141340016.png">What to expect: A cold front should be able to beat any capping inversion eventually, but that normally means a line of storms to track, not discrete cells. One of these organized clusters of storms normally roll through in July &amp; August, but something like that is where we'd be leaning right now. What to do: If you live more in the Midwest in Indiana or Illinois or Kentucky, pay attention. Check back with the forecast, because there are some concerning ingredients that could be in play. Right now, it's still a touch to early to know that a cap will keep a lid on storms.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/2025-05-13 07-13-22-1747142037301.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>FRIDAY</h1>A lot of this will depend on what happens Thursday, so take this with a grain of salt. As the front continues to sag southward, expect more storms by the afternoon and evening. Severe Weather Ramps Up Late Week

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

NORTHERN PLAINS - The record heat continued on Monday as many cities smashed previous records. Multiple cities across the northern plains reached the upper 90s as it was another hot day. Bismarck, ND, saw a record high of 97°, beating out the old record of 92°.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/lfjf-1747099252514.png">FIRE DANGER - The Storm Prediction Center has issued a fire weather outlook on Tuesday for an elevated and critical fire threat. A combination of heat, winds, and dry conditions has ramped up the fire threat. This threat will diminish this week as cooler air and rain move in.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-13 074827-1747144114278.png">The record heat will continue as above-average temperatures continue into Tuesday and even Wednesday for many. Cities that normally average 60s will dig into the upper 80s and 90s. Check out the temps on Thursday. Cooler air arrives with the passing of a cold front, bringing temperatures near to below average. Bismarck will see a high of 92° on Tuesday, and by Thursday be down to only 59°. It will feel like multiple seasons this week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-12 163726-1747089450060.png">Tuesday, temperatures will continue to run 20°- 30° above average, making it feel like summer! The Southeast can not seem to shake the storms over the last few days! Since last Monday, there have been stormy conditions, even bringing some small hail across the Sunshine State. On Saturday, strong storms spun onshore in Florida, leading to some damage—that damage has yet to be surveyed.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1921339468071543250" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1921339468071543250"></div>Florida’s rainy season brings afternoon downpours, rumbling thunderstorms, and the occasional flash flood each year. HIGH PLAINS - We saw a few strong to severe storms develop on Monday, and the severe threat will continue overnight. The severe weather outlook for the overnight hours is a MARGINAL (level 1 out of 5) for portions of Montana and North Dakota.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/overnighttt,mt-1747099768718.png"><h1>Timing</h1><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/nw rain-1747099863890.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>By the middle of this week, expect a significant cooldown along with widespread precipitation accumulation across the western half of the country. An upper-level low will meander around the Gulf this weekend, sending rounds of showers and thunderstorms into the Southeast with increasing flood potential.<h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-10 053914-1746877163953.png">Amounts</h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-12 163632-1747089404471.png">As we head into the work week, as this large upper low over the Lower Mississippi Valley lingers, heavy rainfall could measure up to 3-6" with isolated totals even higher than that.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-12 163545-1747089348219.png">In fact, the Weather Prediction Center has upgraded areas in South Florida to a MODERATE risk for seeing excessive rainfall today (above).<h1>Timing</h1>This low is still lingering, and the flood threat will continue over the next few days.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/05121-1747089354620.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>So, When Is Florida’s Rainy Season Usually?&nbsp;Florida’s rainy season typically runs from late May through mid-October, aligning closely with the Atlantic hurricane season. During this time, the state receives nearly 70% of its annual rainfall (Goodbye drought), with frequent storms developing in the early afternoon and clearing by evening.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-11 061423-1746965676357.jpg">What to Expect Daily&nbsp;During the Rainy SeasonAfternoon thunderstorms are the hallmark of Florida summers. The month of January will see not one but TWO supermoons.

You might be thinking, "Didn't we just have a supermoon?" Well, we did. Back on December 3rd, just under a month ago, night was a little brighter thanks to a supermoon.

So what is exactly is a supermoon?
According to NASA, "A supermoon is a Moon that is full when it is also at or near its closest point in its orbit around Earth." To the naked eye, the moon just appears bigger and brighter.

Now this won't be the only one this month. On January 31st, the month has its second full moon or a "Blue Moon." This full moon will be extra super too because not only is it a supermoon but also a total lunar eclipse. About twice a year, the sun, earth and moon align just so that the Earth's shadow blocks the sun's rays which usually illuminate our moon. So not only is this second full moon in January rare but its a supermoon too. So I guess that makes it a super duper blue moon?
