While much of the western U.S. is feeling record-breaking heat over the weekend, a big change to the weather pattern is expected as we head into next week. As this transition occurs, Montana will see rounds of thunderstorms, with some severe potential.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-10 183309-1746923595438.png">With temperatures pushing 90°F across Big Sky Country, sufficient instability will be available for thunderstorms to develop and strengthen. These storms could organize underneath strong upper-level winds. The upper-level dynamics are ahead of a significant trough that will ultimately impact the rest of the country in the days ahead.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/nwfun-1746923732052.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>While the northern Rockies will be looking at thunderstorms this weekend, the main core of the upper-low will move onshore by Monday morning, beginning the transition to a cooler and wetter pattern.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/ddddddssss-1746932648342.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>By the middle of next week, expect a significant cooldown along with widespread precipitation accumulation across the western half of the country. Weekend Severe Risk in Montana Ahead of Pattern Change

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

An upper-level ridge is bringing the heat, as it remains out west. Mother's Day will be a hot one, so find ways to stay cool. Records have been broken across the West, and the trend will continue over the next few days as this high remains in place. Saturday brought multiple records across California and the Northwest. Anaheim, CA saw a high of 98°, beating out the previous record of 92°. Baker, MT saw a high of 90°, smashing the previous record of 77°. These hot temperatures stick around for the next few days.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/heofofoff-1746932712806.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/HOT TEMSSS-1746923284278.png">Numerous cities from now through Tuesday may break record high temperatures. Each dot you see represents a city that may break or tie a record high.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/now througgg-1746910710737.png">CALIFORNIATemperatures tren above average over the next few days in Southern California. Los Angeles normally averages 74°, but will see a high temperature of 88 on Sunday. San Diego morally sees a mild temperature of 69° for this time of year, but will see a high of 80° on Sunday. With Bakersfield in the low 90s, Southern California is getting more of a summer-like feel!<h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/cali sun through monday-1746923606505.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/norh cali-1746923648189.png"></h1><h1>THE NORTHWEST</h1>Temps start above average on Sunday and Monday, but a trough will dig and bring much cooler air in place for many by Tuesday. Unseasonable Heat to Scorch Western and Northern U.S. Mother’s Day Weekend

That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

An upper-level low will meander around the Gulf this weekend, sending rounds of showers and thunderstorms into the Southeast with increasing flood potential. The Weather Prediction Center is highlighting the heaviest along the Southeast Atlantic coast, from St. Simons Island up to Wilmington, NC. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-10 183906-1746923981250.png"><h1>Timing</h1>The flooding threat lasts through the Mother's Day weekend with repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms. Florida can not seem to shake the storms over the last few days! Since last Monday, there have been stormy conditions, even bringing some small hail across the Sunshine State. More rain is forecast as a frontal boundary continues to stall. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-10 182854-1746923341782.png">Florida is famous for its sunshine, but at the end of spring, the skies often tell a different story. Each year, Florida’s rainy season brings afternoon downpours, rumbling thunderstorms, and the occasional flash flood. Understanding this seasonal shift is especially important to visitors due to how energetic these storms can be&nbsp;(Hello, lightning).Over the following days, any thunderstorm could drop some hail or damaging winds. Flooding rainfall is also possible as multiple inches of rain could swamp some roadways and low-lying areas.So, When Is Florida’s Rainy Season Usually?&nbsp;Florida’s rainy season typically runs from late May through mid-October, aligning closely with the Atlantic hurricane season. A break in storms for the Northeast is on the way this Sunday, but first, another round of heavy showers is expected. Flood Threat Lingers in New England Saturday

Hail over the size of tennis balls and baseballs fell across the Mid-South and Southeast on Thursday! The storm system responsible is heading toward the coast, where the threat will persist through this evening.<h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-09 054322-1746791009234.png">Today's Risk</h1>The threat of severe storms will follow the cold front to the coast this afternoon, with a slightly higher risk for the Outer Banks, where wind and hail damage is more likely.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-09 134214-1746819810039.png">This morning's storms have given way to some clearing before the front taps into daytime heating. Huge Hail in the Mid-South Thursday, Storms Linger in the Carolinas Today

Looking at the rain from a glass half full lens, the Four Corners has received beneficial rain and snow over the last several days. Rain and Snow totals have already started piling in for Colorado. In the past 24 hours the highest totals for rain have been over 2.50 inches for Rye and Denver has seen over an inch of rainfall. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-07 053642-1746617812907.png">The rain is not the only factor. So far, Colorado has seen over half a foot of snow, and totals will be on the rise Wednesday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-07 053705-1746617844560.png">Clouds and rain will linger through mid-morning before another round of rain will move through in the afternoon. This slow moving storm system will also deliver a big cool-down. The temperature will drop by 10-20 degrees (or more). The heaviest snow across the Colorado Rockies will continue through Wednesday for elevations 8000 ft+, along with heavy rainfall in the foothills, front range, and plains.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/2025-05-07 05-40-05-1746618046345.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>This event could bring in some much-needed snow for the higher terrains to keep the ski resorts open a little while longer across parts of the Rockies. Snow totals will likely reach 2' in the high peaks of the Colorado Rockies. Pikes Peak under a Winter Storm Warning with up to 4 feet by early Wednesday. Late-season winter storms can pose a significant risk to hikers and outdoor recreationists unprepared for winter conditions.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-07 053756-1746617906825.png">The soaking rain is another issue, as well. Some areas will be picking up 1-3 inches of rain along the I-25 corridor. Parts of southeastern CO could see isolated flooding with these showers. The mountains will keep afternoon shower chances throughout the weekend, while the rest of the areas will start to dry out.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-07 053803-1746617915680.png">After Wednesday, temperatures will start to warm back up. The area will dry out as a ridge of high pressure moves in. Highs will struggle to make it above freezing on Thursday but the kicker for the bitter cold will come by Thursday night and Friday morning.
