Flash Flood Watches Continue in the Southwest for Monsoon Storms

[Storms near Prescott, Arizona. From John Drennan.] Monsoon showers and thunderstorms have the potential to produce heavy rain today (Friday). 1" to 3" may fall in some areas, which could create flooding. Flash Flood Watches are in effect for southeastern Arizona, including Tucson, and southwestern New Mexico. Scattered thunderstorms will increase throughout the afternoon into this evening. With rainfall rates in excess of an inch per hour, flash flooding, mud slides, and debris flows are possible. The concern is significant near burn scars, slick rock, slot canyons and normally dry washes. Also, areas that received heavy rain on Thursday may be more susceptible to flooding with over-saturated soils.
