In addition to the hot temperatures across the Southeastern United States, there is an increasing threat for severe thunderstorms as we head into the workweek.
On Monday, the SPC has upgraded portions of Mississippi and Louisiana to a SLIGHT (level 2 out of 5) risk for severe weather. The main threat will be isolated damaging winds and severe gusts, with a lower threat for hail across the area.
On Tuesday, there is a MARGINAL (level 1 out of 5) risk for severe storms along portions of the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, from eastern Louisiana through southwestern South Carolina. Storms are expected to be more isolated in nature, developing within a moist air mass near the Gulf Coast. The main threat will once again be isolated damaging winds.
TimelineStorms along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts will favor the afternoon hours through Tuesday, when surface temperatures are at their highest. By Wednesday, we're watching the next front that is expected to push through the region. This could bring a more widespread chance for thunderstorms across the Deep South, as shown in our in-house forecast model.
Locally heavy downpours are possible, but no major flood risk is currently in the forecast.
