A sharp surge of Arctic air is set to spill into the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic this weekend, bringing a significant drop in temperatures and some of the coldest conditions the region has felt this winter. This blast of cold will arrive behind a fast-moving system late Friday, ushering in gusty winds and a brief chance for light snow before the true chill settles in.&nbsp;Extreme Cold Warnings are in effect for Northeast through the weekend. Wind chill values are expected to be 20 to 35 degrees below zero.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/2026-02-07 04-16-03-1770463084098.mkv" controls="true" width="100%"></video>By Saturday, much colder air will move down from Canada, dropping temperatures well below seasonal averages. Afternoon highs will struggle to climb out of the 20s in many areas, while overnight lows dip into the single digits and teens. Extreme Cold to Impact Millions this Weekend

Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

Friday more records fell in Montana with highs in the upper 60s. In addition, records reached the Lone Star State with temperatures in the 80s.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1770433777336.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1770433563993.png">Gradually, temperatures are expected to drop off some as the upper high shifts into the Plains. However, temperatures will still stay a good ten to twenty degrees above average by early next week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1770433681259.png"><h1>Record Warmth Shifts East</h1>As troughing sets in across the Pacific, high pressure will shift farther east into the Plains and Midwest through the weekend into next week. This will lead to a major warm up for some areas, with record highs possible.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-06 063750-1770385457730.png">By Monday high temperatures soar to about 30 degrees above average in areas like Lincoln, Sioux Falls, and Des Moines, with temperatures well into the 60s.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-06 063758-1770385469836.png">Numerous records could fall on Monday, with an isolated record or two being challenged Sunday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-06 063835-1770385487949.png">The warming temperatures will mean impacts from melting snow and ice, particularly where ice jams become a hazard. Record Heat Moves from West to Midwest

Are you tired of snow yet? If so, I have bad news. Another round of snow, and brutally cold wind chills, return to the East to start the weekend. As a clipper system drops from the Great Lakes through New England, light snow is expected from North Carolina to Maine, with some areas seeing heavier snow over 6 inches (purple areas above).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-06 065110-1770388419540.png">Winter weather advisories have been issued from Vermont to North Carolina for snow and wind, resulting in impacts to travel. Heavy blowing snow is expected over the spine of the Appalachians and Alleghenies, prompting the upgrade to a winter storm warning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1770432609327.png"><h1>Timing</h1>Lake effect snow is expected to develop for a few areas behind the front through Friday night and Saturday, resulting in narrow corridors of heavy snow and difficult travel. Snow along the cold front will continue to fall from Long Island into New England Saturday morning, with the potential for heavier snow into Saturday afternoon in eastern New England before it tapers off into the evening.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/New Baron Video 3-1770432756203.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Heavier Snow in New England</h1>A chance for ocean enhancement could increase snowfall rates on Saturday for areas like Boston. Another Round of Snow Targets the Eastern U.S.

Following a surge of wet storm systems in December and early January, snowpack in the Sierra Nevada mountains has shrunk considerably. The Department of Water Resources (DWR) conducted a snow survey on Friday, January 30th, to assess current conditions and discuss impacts. Snowpack was determined to be 55 percent of normal, down from 89 percent in early January, which has since dropped further. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.youtube.com/live/5cyXPAy4Cac">Click here</a> to watch the survey report.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-04 113103-1770236816380.png">California and much of the West have been under the influence of a massive blocking ridge of high pressure. This has kept storms charging to the north into Canada before descending across the Midwest and Eastern United States, which has been under siege from cold and snowy systems.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-05 154857-1770331744830.png"> The lack of January storms has left an abysmal snowpack across the Western United States, with record low numbers at many of the monitoring stations in the mountains. It hasn't just been a lack of storms, but also warm weather, which has led to high elevation snow and low elevation rain or melting.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-04 171742-1770250669542.png">The good news is that California has had three wet winter seasons preceding this year, which have left reservoirs with plenty of water. About 30 percent of the state's drinking water comes from the snowpack.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-05 154642-1770331615239.png"> While the short-term looks mostly dry for the west, above-average precipitation is favored in the medium-range forecast as the jet stream pattern could flip around the middle of the month. While full recovery of the snowpack across the entire west is unlikely, several moisture-packed storm systems could greatly benefit the region.

The championship of the National Football League is set to be decided this upcoming Sunday. The Seattle Seahawks will face the New England Patriots for the right to claim the title at 5:30 PM Sunday. But will the weather have a say in who is hoisting the trophy at the end of it?<h3>PATTERN BREAKING DOWN</h3>A strong area of high pressure is currently in charge of the weather out west. That's pushing temperatures to the extreme in Los Angeles, especially for early February. If you plan on attending any of the pregame festivities this week before the game kicks off, no issues at all!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1770433072788.png">Rain doesn't look like it's going to ruin the game or any of the activities, but it bears watching as we go throughout the week. Following a historic winter storm last weekend, another round of wintry weather moved across the Carolinas earlier on Thursday morning. Perhaps the biggest impact from the front will be another round of cold temperatures, which will further delay snowmelt across the region and continue to impact people in Mississippi, who have been without power for nearly two weeks following an ice storm.<h1>Carolina Snow and Ice:</h1>Although the snow and ice threat diminished earlier this evening, isolated slick spots will still be around through the morning on Friday. Here is a look at some of the snowfall that took place this morning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/PIC 2-1770309464464.jpg"><h1>South Cold</h1>Another round of frigid temperatures will follow the front. Cold weather advisories have been issued for wind chills down into the low 20s on Friday morning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1770322297809.png">Overnight and through Friday morning, freeze warnings have been issued for Florida and southern Georgia. Another Cold Night for Residents of the Southeast

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

While it has now been about a week since a major ice storm swept across the southern tier of the country, over a hundred thousand customers remain without power, the majority across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. While temperatures warmed some, it's been a cold week for people to be without power, creating dangerous conditions for those without heat.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-03 115640-1770145007230.png">Customers without power are beginning to improve as temperatures climb.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-03 115635-1770145012216.png">Low temperatures will begin to rebound, more noticeably, by midweek. Thousands of Customers Still Remain Without Power

Cool and cloudy conditions expected through Monday in the San Joaquin Valley of California all courtesy of a strong temperature inversion. Cooler, moist air at lower elevations across the valley are currently capped off by dry, warmer air above.

Below the clouds at lower elevations near the valley floor temperatures will remain cool through M.L.K. Day.  Areas nearby at higher elevations will enjoy sunshine and warmer than average high temperatures through Monday as well.
