Cold Update: Records to be Broken Tonight

6 Jan 2018, 5:55 pm

Prepare for another dangerously-cold night across the Eastern U.S. once again. Temperatures will fall to 0 to -20 degrees and possibly as cold as -30 degrees in the very isolated, coldest spots. This is not factoring in any wind either. A 5-10 mph wind will shave off another 10 degrees to the actual temperatures. Here’s the scope of the cold by Sunday morning.

The blue dots indicate areas that are forecast to fall to record cold low temperatures Sunday morning, January 7.
Low temperature forecast Sunday morning, January 7 across the Northeast. Some locations may drop to as low as -30 degrees Fahrenheit.
Low temperature forecast for the Southeast on Sunday morning, January 7. Another hard freeze is expected for parts of the Southeast.
Frost and freeze alerts are in effect for parts of Georgia and Florida for near-freezing temperatures Sunday morning, January 7.

Sunday morning will be the last taste of the current Arctic blast across the East coast. After Sunday, temperatures will warm up quite significantly (in comparison to recent weather) and may rise above average.

High temperature forecast for Thursday, January 11.

What can you do? Keep exposed skin covered, limit time outdoors, check in on neighbors and friends/family who may be in the area to make sure they are safe. Cold weather shelters may be open, check for local information there. Keep space heaters away from flammable materials inside homes.
