<p>A <strong>tornado watch</strong> has been issued for portions of Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee until 11 PM CT. The main threats are: a few tornadoes possible, scattered hail up to 2" in diameter, and scattered gusts up to 70 mph. A few <strong>severe thunderstorm watches</strong> have expanded into Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas through tonight too.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 181243-1742775198747.png">The SPC has issued a <strong>SLIGHT</strong> (level 2 out of 5) risk for severe weather through Monday morning across portions of Mississippi, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Alabama. This is accompanied by a 5% probability of tornadoes in these areas highlighted in brown.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 135129-1742759505343.png">Storms will continue along and ahead of a frontal boundary, and models look to increase the intensity through the overnight hours.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/OVNVNVNVNV-1742778754774.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Rainfall totals could surpass 1-3 inches in some locations, but a lot will be coming down in a short period of time.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 135124-1742759499927.png">This could lead to isolated flash flooding, which is being highlighted by the WPC below.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 135157-1742759527360.png"></p>

Severe Weather Risk Continues Through Tonight & Monday

<p>The first full week of spring in the west will feel more like May than March, thanks to a strong ridge of high pressure targeting the region. Abnormally warm temperatures early in the season can weigh more heavily on the body due to a lack of acclimation, so please take precautions if you have plans to be outdoors for an extended time next week.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/phoenixxxxxx ssss-1742779226846.png">Record-breaking temperatures are expected from Southern California to Montana, with highs in the lower deserts approaching 100°.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/03-23_rsw_mon to thu dots-1742762076315.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>These record-breaking temperatures can be especially impactful early in the season when a lot of people are not yet used to the heat. The Heat Risk is expected to reach a moderate level (2 out of 4) on Tuesday, expected to be the warmest day for many in the deserts.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 112437-1742750682156.png"></p><h1>Forecast Highs</h1><p>Areas in the Sonoran Desert (Phoenix, Palm Springs, Yuma) are expected to reach the upper 90s, and may even surpass 100° early in the week. The earliest day in the year on record for Phoenix to hit 100° or higher is March 26th, one day after peak high temperatures are expected in southern Arizona.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/forecdd-1742779119977.png">The Pacific Northwest will dry out during the work with record-breaking warmth expected. High temperatures will climb into the 70s and even 80s for some.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/mon weee-1742779150413.png">The Northern Rockies could see rapid snow melt through next week as high temperatures climb to more than 20° above average. Billings, Cheyenne, and Rapid City are all expected to climb into the 70s.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 112424-1742750668072.png">If you plan to spend time outdoors, especially when venturing farther away from cities on a hike or similar, be sure to bring plenty of water, take breaks in the shade, and wear loose, light-colored clothing.</p>

Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). <p><strong>NORTHWEST</strong> - According to avalanche.org, the Cascades and Olympics of Washington and Mount Hood of Oregon have increased the danger of avalanches to a high degree. This has been accompanied by avalanche warnings (in blue). Avalanche watches have been issued for the Whitefish, Swan, and Flathead Range backcountry. These expire tonight. An avalanche watch is in place for portions of Montana (peach) and this is in place through Monday.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 141256-1742761108804.png">According to the National Weather Service, below 6500 feet, rain on new snow may create wet snow avalanche hazards, and at higher elevations new snow may create unstable slabs. <em>"Wet snow and slab avalanches may release naturally and will be easily triggered by a person".</em></p><h2>What Causes Avalanches?</h2><p>Meteorologist Rob Bradley explains the dangers of avalanches:</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/PKG_042921_TRT 2.20_UNDERSTANDING AVALANCHE DANGERS_ROB BRADLEY_MC_E042921-1742761911785.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Forecast Timeline</h2><p>Models keep this system looking fairly warm, so snow looks to be limited to the highest elevations and into the Rockies and Tetons. This increases the avalanche concern. The heaviest moisture will continue through tonight before the stalled front lifts farther north into Canada, limiting the extent of new moisture.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/FORECASSTTTTT-1742778892708.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p></p><p>Since this looks to be a warmer system, through tonight there is a level 2 out of 4 (slight) risk for heavy rainfall across the Olympics and Cascades of Washington State. Avalanche Danger Increases Out West

<p>Winter's grip hasn't loosened on the Upper Midwest yet! A round of heavy snow will impact areas around the Great Lakes, especially Lake Superior, with gusty winds and scattered showers farther to the south. Some areas could see pockets of 6-12 inches of snow (top of page), especially along the western shores of Lake Superior.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-22 091429-1742656479461.png">Low pressure building off the Rockies will strengthen as it moves into the Great Lakes, with impacts expected through Monday morning. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 143628-1742762193192.png">The heavy snow triggers winter weather alerts around Lake Superior and northern Lake Michigan, including winter storm warnings in the Arrowhead of Minnesota, Northern Wisconsin, and Western UP of Michigan. This is where 12"+ of snow will be possible in addition to gusty winds. Blowing snow and reduced visibility are likely.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/knnnn-1742779342189.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>The snow will persist as the low slowly moves east, finally exiting the region around midday on Monday.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/winssss-1742779443827.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>In addition to rain and snow, winds will be strong and gusty around the strengthening low-pressure system. Winds over 35 mph with gusts over 50 mph are possible.</p>

<p><strong>FLORIDA</strong> - A wildfire in Miami-Dade County Florida shut down access to the Florida Keys on Tuesday on US 1 - with another closure on Thursday. The fire has now increased to over 26,000 acres with containment increasing to 65% as of late Sunday, according to the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://ffs.firesponse.com/public/"><em>Florida Forest Service.</em></a><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 140138-1742760129494.png"></p><p>Dry and breezy conditions will persist for the Southeast, prompting the issuance of fire weather alerts. It may seem strange for Florida, a typically humid state, to have wildfire danger, but the ongoing drought conditions and high winds have led to critical fire danger. This happens more often in the spring after drier conditions over the winter.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 140348-1742760235712.png"></p><h1>Fire Outlook</h1><p>The SPC has maintained <strong>elevated fire danger</strong> back in the Plains through tomorrow. Dry and windy conditions are expected behind a cold front that supports elevated fire potential for these areas.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 140435-1742760295372.png"></p><p>As with any day, be vigilant not to do anything that could cause a spark or a flame. If an evacuation order is issued for your area, heed it. Tornadoes can happen any time, any day, any where. But </span><span style="color: rgb(13, 13, 13)">the strength of a tornado can only be determined by the damage it leaves behind. Precipitation is favored to be above-average in some areas of the Great Lakes and in northern and western Alaska.&nbsp;</p><h1>Drought &amp; Flooding</h1><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-20 095736-1742487814667.png">Moderate-to-exceptional drought conditions currently exist across more than 40% of the continental U.S. Drought conditions are likely to persist in the Southwest and parts of the Rocky Mountains, while drought improvement is forecast for the Great Lakes region. Drought development is likely across the central and southern Great Plains.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-20 101939-1742488289405.png"><br>Widespread major flooding is not expected this spring across the CONUS, and significantly reduced flood risk exists over much of the United States, given above average temperatures, combined with well below average snowpack over the Northern Plains, Midwest, and Ohio Valley. The reduced flood risk could lead to low flow impacts on navigation and saltwater intrusion on the Lower Mississippi River during the late summer and fall. This is the fourth year in a row with this risk.</p><p>Despite the overall reduced flood risk this spring, moderate flooding is expected in tributaries to the Lower Missouri River in Kansas and Missouri. This area typically experiences moderate flooding each spring, and despite the lack of snowpack, local antecedent conditions and typical spring rainfall will lead to the likelihood of moderate flooding on these tributaries.</p><p>Current water supply forecasts in the western United States indicate much below normal conditions for the Desert Southwest due to below average snowpack.</p><p>In Alaska, spring ice breakup and snowmelt flood risk is forecast to be above average for the Upper Yukon, Tanana, and Koyukuk River basins. Below average flood risk is expected in the Lower Yukon and Kuskokwim River basins, along with most of Southcentral Alaska.</p><p>Based on the expected spring flood outlook, hypoxia development in the Gulf of America and Chesapeake Bay is projected to not deviate from seasonal normals. Hypoxic zones directly impact commercial and recreational fisheries."</p><p style="text-align: start"></p>

Red Flag Warnings are once again in place across southern Wyoming and will stay in effect until Friday evening.

Increasing wind and low humidity are forecast for Friday afternoon, which will bring an increased fire potential to the region. These weather conditions will allow any fires that develop to spread easily and quickly.

Adding insult to injury, drought is in place across this same area, which has likely producing fuels, such as dry or dead vegetation, that would support any wildfires that develop.
