Monsoon season is in full swing in much of the Desert Southwest, putting Ruidoso, NM under a flash flood emergency on Sunday as heavy rainfall dumped so much rain the extremely dry grounds couldn't bear it. Leading to sights like this one:
We have ongoing flood alerts throughout much of central New Mexico and southwestern Colorado. Flash flood watches are in effect in places where the South Fork and Salt Fires have burned. Meaning that there is an elevated risk for flash flooding and debris flow with the heavy rain possible on top of burn scars.
Don't let your guard down even if you deal with storms and rain in the morning. With a ridge of high-pressure steering, wind speeds to converge with moisture coming in from the Pacific and the Gulf, nearly every day poses the threat of scattered storms and showers in the afternoon specifically.
